6WDII :ULWHU The TCU Tiger Den at Warsaw Community High School will be one of two sites for a pair of exhibition games from The Basketball League.

The professional league, which is part of the chain of leagues that feed the NBA, will have two games played on two days. The first is Thursday, Feb. 24, at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center on the campus of Grace College, and the second Friday, Feb. 25, at the Tiger Den at WCHS. The TBL, which league president David Magley notes is like a baseball “AA” level equivalent for professional basketball, will bring in the Lebanon Leprechauns from Lebanon, Ind., to play the Canadian team Kitchener-Waterloo Titans at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person for each contest.

Grace will have the Indiana All-Americans and the Sudbury Five (Canada) playing each other at 7 p.m. as well.

Castle). The league has been in existence for five years and houses more than 40 total teams.

“The facilities that are here at Warsaw High School are just beautiful, and Grace College as well,” said Kent Benson, team owner of the Indiana All-Americans. “This community is just so rich with basketball, not just at the high school level, but at the college level as well. You can support venues like that, it’s a shame that there isn’t professional basketball here to extend the basketball tradition that’s here in Warsaw and Winona Lake.”

Magley expects the Warsaw exhibition to be very student oriented, including bands, cheerleading and live streaming in conjunction with the game, as well as some handson opportunities in the works and potential fundraising opportunities.

“We think we can do it right and we can put on a good show,” Magley said, who with Benson, were both on campus at WCHS in mid-January. “After we play Thursday night, we could take a third to a half of our guys along with Kent and myself, and run chapel

at Grace College and it would be as good as anything they’ve seen. That’s because that’s the kind of character that our kids come from. There’s a lot of high-end guys. It’s important to us. If we do the right things in the community, then we are impacting the youth, so we have the right kind of guys.”

Magley made it known the exhibitions are a trial run as a potential test run to see if the TBL could house a team in Warsaw/ Winona Lake, and is also looking at other potential sites around northern Indiana including Elkhart, the home to the Elkhart Express professional basketball for a number of years.

The exhibition games are backed by the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce.

“The people in the stands are going to see not only great basketball, but they are going to see good individuals as people, and that’s very important to us,” Benson said.

Leesburg clerk-treasurer enjoys public service %\ .(,7+ .1(33 6WDII :ULWHU Leesburg Clerk-Treasurer Mike Searfoss said he almost literally walked in to the job back in 2013.

He had just returned from vacation in Texas when he stopped in to the clerk-treasurer’s office to pay his utility bill but didn’t find Jan Carter in her usual place. Instead, a young man informed him Carter was experiencing health issues and was planning to resign from the position. Searfoss was told they were looking for someone who lived inside the Leesburg town limits who had a background in finance and was a registered political party member. With a population of 555, the pool from which to draw was relatively shallow.

However, as luck would have it, Searfoss did have a the requisite experience, having served as financial secretary at Dana Corp. in Syracuse and his semi-retired status allowed him the flexibility to take on the position. After speaking with town council member Doug Jones, a deal was struck and Searfoss was appointed by the board to fill the remaining term vacated by Carter. Since then, he has been elected by his fellow townspeople in 2015 and

again in 2019.

“This job definitely fell into my lap,” he said. “It wasn’t something I was looking to do.”

Searfoss said he ran unopposed in 2015 but was challenged in 2019. His opponent held a full-time job and wanted to perform the clerktreasurer’s job in the evenings and weekends. Searfoss noted, however, the job as he performs it requires nearly full-time hours. He said he usually puts in 30-40 hours a week, maintaining fairly standard office hours each weekday. He said the position allows him a lot of autonomy and flexibility with his time off but he makes an effort to be available most days.

“I don’t have to ask the board’s permission to be gone,” he said. “They explained when I started that ‘you’re an elected official, you don’t answer to us, you answer to the people of the town. If they don’t like the job you’re doing, you may not get elected!’”

Each day, Searfoss answers emails, phone calls and inperson visits. He said he often has to explain “just because you have a Leesburg address, it doesn’t mean that I am the person you need to speak with,” since many people outside of the town’s limits share the ZIP code. He does, however, do

his best to connect them with the correct person or organization to get their questions addressed. He also attends the monthly meetings of the town council and works with the State Board of Accounts and the Department of Local Government Finance to ensure the town’s financial status and budget are correctly maintained.

The town has 286 paying utilities customers and Searfoss said he personally knows around half of those families who come in and out of the office. Others he sees at the post office or around town and is familiar with many of them.

Searfoss graduated from Warsaw High School in 1973.

He lived in the Barbee Lakes area for 30 years before moving to Leesburg in 1993. He and his wife, Sally, enjoy traveling together, especially to visit her son in Fort Myers, Fla. He added Puerto Rico was one of their favorite trips together. Between the two of them, they have four children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Election of supervisors is additionally a part of the annual meeting. This year two supervisor positions were elected. Martin was elected to a second term on the board and Stan Moore received a second appointment to the board after serving two elected terms.

while the annual tree sale program distributed more than 8,500 trees to participants. The tree sales depleted the SWCD’s supply for the first time in its history.

The raft programs for students made a comeback in 2021. Students boarded rafts for two programs, one on Grassy Creek and a second on the Tippecanoe River. Outdoor programs for students increased, with more than 100 classes of nearly 5,300 students participating. The district also successfully coordinated its sixth Master Naturalist class, showcasing several natural areas in the county.

Ryan Martin, secretary/treasurer, provided a financial report.

“It was a good year for the district,” Martin stated, adding there were a number of projects and programs they were able to accomplish with amazing and impressive results in an uncertain year. Through the use

plan, which includes a waste storage facility and the use of French drains.

The annual meeting also provides an annual review of the SWCD and highlights of significant projects.

The district drew attention to three Lake and River Enhancement grants that provided cost share to landowners to implement a variety of conservation practices to improve soil health and water quality.

Technical services were provided through a Clean Water Indiana grant in the Walnut Creek watershed, while cost share for projects was offered through a second CWI grant in the Middle Upper Eel watershed. Additional technical expertise was provided through a contribution agreement with the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

The district’s annual food plot seed program provided more than 1,400 pounds of seed to landowners,

Three Wawasee High School students were honored by the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District during its annual meeting Feb. 15. Cade Beer, Jared Beer and Justin Mullet were recognized as being the top high school soil judgers in the county in 2021.

The annual meeting was held virtually.

In addition to the three Wawasee students, Nicole Ziemek, Tippecanoe Valley High School, was recognized as being the top high school soil judger.

Other awards announced included: Indiana River Friendly Farmer, Conservation Education and Conservation Farmer of the Year.

Mike Long was the recipient of the River Friendly Farmer Award.

This award recognizes farmers who implement conservation practices that protect and enhance Indiana’s rivers, lakes, and streams. Long was nominated by Kosciusko County SWCD for his use of no-till, cover crops, water control structures, buffer, and filter strips, as well as a two-stage ditch in his operation.

This year’s Conservation Education Award went to a school for a project that made a difference in their community. Jefferson Elementary fourth and sixth grade students

took action to lower E.coli levels in nearby Cherry Creek. Students conducted water tests, did research, and made presentations to lobby for pet waste stations along the creek.

They also created educational posters and brochures to educate the public about picking up pet waste.

Subsequent testing revealed E.coli levels dropped significantly.

The Conservation Farmer of the Year Award is the district’s longestgiven recognition. It acknowledges noteworthy conservation practices in a farm operation that improve soil health, water quality and related natural resources. Steve Metzger of South View Farms received this year’s award for work on his grain and dairy farm in the southern part of the county. Noteworthy practices include no-till planting, cover crops, and collaborative installation of a two-stage ditch. Metzger has also instituted a nutrient management

Members of the Tippecanoe Township Advisory Board gathered with Township Trustee Chris Francis Feb. 9, to conduct its first meeting that didn’t also include the North Webster Fire Department.

The newly established Tippecanoe Township Fire Territory met the previous evening prior to the regular meeting of the North Webster Town Council, as previously prescribed.

Next month, and in all oddnumbered months, the TTFT will meet prior to the township advisory board’s meeting.

To open the meeting, Francis presented the board with resolution 2022-1, which would allow the township to continue toward

its previously agreed upon purchase of the former North Webster theater building. The building has been deemed unrepairable, and the township intends to tear it down once the purchase is complete.

Before the purchase can be made, however, the township must get two independent and unbiased appraisals of the building’s fair market value within the next 30 days, which is what the resolution allows them to do. The board approved the resolution to move forward with the appraisals. Francis said he hopes the township will be able to close on the purchase in April.

There was some question as to whether the township would be able to use money from the 2021 Rainy Day Fund to finance the purchase.

the rollover of last year’s remaining funds to pay for the purchase of the building. He said he would continue to pursue the township’s ability to draw from last year’s leftover funds to complete the transaction.

Continued maintenance of the township’s cemeteries also was approved, utilizing the existing contractors who have been performing the duties. A concern was raised by board member Ed Clayton about snowmobiles traveling through the cemeteries. Francis, who also serves as a deputy with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, assured Clayton it is illegal to do so and the police should and would be called for violators.

Francis presented the board with the trustee’s annual report, unanimously approved by the three trustees.

Spotting some of the signs of spring It’s February, the OUTDOOR NOTES shortest month of the year. It’s the shortest month but the days are getting longer.

I get up early and it’s still dark By Neil Case when I get up, but the sky is light along the eastern horizon.

With the days getting longer, they should be getting warmer.

Not this year. February came in with a wintry roar, wind, rain, freezing rain, ice, snow, nearly 2 feet of snow in northern Indiana where I live. It was the worst storm of the winter, a blizzard. I know what a blizzard is. I grew up in northwest Iowa. There I saw a blizzard every winter, frequently more than one.

I get up, go to the bathroom,

wash, dress, then go out in the yard with our two dogs, if it isn’t raining. If it’s raining, I only go as far as the porch. While the dogs are relieving themselves, I look, and listen, for birds and other signs of spring. I look particularly for birds that have been gone during the winter, birds that migrated, left northern Indiana last fall when the days were getting shorter, and I look too for birds that came from farther north and spent the winter in northern Indiana.

The blizzard has passed, days are warmer, the snow is melting, slowly. I’m up early, as usual. I wash, dress and out in the yard with our dogs, if it isn’t raining or snowing. While the dogs are relieving themselves, I look for birds, of course, birds I have not been seeing through the winter.

A robin, then, seen or heard, or a mourning dove or other recent feathered arrival is a sign of spring. When I’m out and see or hear a robin, mourning dove or

other spring arrival, it’s a sure sign of spring, several robins, a morning chorus, is an announcement of spring.

I haven’t seen or heard a robin this spring. I have seen three mourning doves perched on a power line by the road. We saw them, my daughter and I, as we drove by. The day we saw the mourning doves, my daughter and I also saw three small flocks of horned larks.

The birds at the feeders outside my windows are the same species, probably the same birds, as have been coming to the feeders all winter. I don’t expect to see a robin on a bird feeder, but I may see one on the ground below the feeders.

The calendar and the length of day indicate the approach of spring. But the birds and the weather do not. Particularly the weather. The sky has been gray for days. The temperature has been below freezing day after day.

Then there was the blizzard. But

There are now places where the ground is bare, snowless. In places where there is no snow, the grass is green, as good a sign of spring as a robin. In many places where there is no snow and the grass is green, there are dandelions and clover in bloom.

Maybe there’s a change in the

air. Today the sky is blue with a few scattered white clouds and the temperature now, afternoon, is above freezing. The snow is melting. I’m in the house, sitting by a window, looking at the feeders outside, looking for a robin and on the ground for dandelions and other early blossoms.

I grew up in northern Iowa.

The weather there was much like here, in northern Indiana where I live now, except we had several blizzards every winter in Iowa, never just one.

Most of them, with the exception of Tony Canger, have had mediocre success in their struggle to capture the attention of the art-buying world.

Success in the art world is a woefully difficult journey. Success requires not only being a talented artist; but also to gain the acclaim of critics, get accepted by art gallery owners, compete with inexpensive prints, grab notice of auction houses, obtain a reputable agent, and become notable enough for a museum to buy the work.

Thus, it is surprising Tony Canger, a fairly new artist, was able to garner compliments in the Times newspaper. They stated his

work was “…the most ambitious works in terms of subject matter and scale” as it spoke about Canger’s large allegorical figure paintings. They went on to talk about his work entitled “The Family” and said “… the emotional mood of the paintings remains convincing.”

Knowing how difficult it is to achieve success as an artist, how did Canger pass up those other seven artists to become the popular and well-paid artist of today?

He garnered more success when he changed from abstract to a figurative approach as seen in his Liberty Museum exhibit painting called “The Feast.”

Jack Kirby is also another more recent artist you might not have heard of, yet his success far surpassed Canger. Thus, if he charted his success by notoriety, it would be sorely lacking. He was a cartoon artist who famously envisioned

Purdue Extension hosting ServSafe food safety class Do you own a restaurant or work in the food service industry?

Indiana law requires each food service establishment have one certified food handler on staff and this food handler is responsible for all periods of the food establishment’s operation.

To help local food service establishments meet this requirement, Purdue Extension Kosciusko County offers ServSafe classes and exams. The ServSafe program provides food safety training, exams, and educational materials to food service managers.

Students can earn the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification. It is accredited by the American National Standards Institute Conference for Food Protection.

This program blends the latest Food and Drug Administration’s food code, food safety research, and years of food sanitation training experience. Managers learn to implement essential food safety practices and create a culture of food safety. All content and materials are based on actual job tasks identified by food service industry experts; this program meets Indiana requirements for food handler certification.

Purdue Extension Kosciusko County will host a one-day ServSafe food manager class and examination from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 21. This class will be held at the Kosciusko County Justice Building, 121 N. Lake St., Warsaw. Cost for the full class, exam

Weight limit signs will soon be posted on smaller roads along the east side of Silver Lake.

Silver Lake Town Council unanimously adopted an ordinance Wednesday, Feb. 9, setting weight limits for large trucks that often get sidetracked when trying to avoid detours and construction along SR 15.

The new policy sets the weight limit at 13 tons.

The move is intended to keep large trucks from getting stuck on small neighborhood streets. Officials believe that trend has led to unnecessary wear and tear on roads, damage to yards and even some downed utility lines that get clipped.

Officials considered including a height limit, but Silver Lake Town Attorney Austin Rovenstine reminded them tall trucks would

also very likely exceed the weight limit.

The town did not identify which roads would fall under the limits or how many signs will be posted.

In other matters, the council held the first of three meetings to consider annexing five acres northwest of SR 15 and Dixie Drive. The land is owned by Silver Lake Wesleyan Church, which is considering selling the land to a company that would build a Dollar General store.

The church is seeking to have the land annexed.

Another meeting to discuss the proposal will happen at 5:30 p.m.

Feb. 23. A vote is then set for at the next regular monthly meeting March 9.

Council also got an update on plans to renovate the second floor of Station 2, which is used for storage and some office space. The town has received one bid but will seek another before choosing a contractor.

The daughter of Wilbur J. and Pauline V. (Hulvey) Sorg, Gay was born March 26, 1967, in Columbia City.

Gay Sorg did not know a stranger and consid*$< /<11 ered everyone she knew a friend. Gay loved spend- 0$5,( 625* ing time with her many favorite nieces and nephews.

Gay’s face would light up each time she saw a baby. Before her mother’s passing in 2015, Gay could always be found by her mother’s side.

Gay enjoyed being a hostess at Hardees in North Manchester for more than 10 years. She was a huge Indianapolis Colts and WWE wrestling fan.

Gay enjoyed journaling every day and was a faithful member of Saint Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church. She would also attend Congregational Christian Church in North Manchester.

She was born Nov. 25, 1925. On Sept.

4, 1948, she married Andrew “Andy” A. Brown. He preceded her in death March 3, 2007.

Indiana FFA celebrates National FFA Week The Indiana FFA State Officer team will connect with members around Indiana promoting agriculture education and FFA in celebration of National FFA Week.

Indiana FFA Association and Indiana State Department of Agriculture will celebrate all things blue and gold for National FFA Week from Feb. 19-26. National FFA Week remembers more than 94 years of FFA tradition and history, while also highlighting and celebrating the success stories of the 735,000 members of the national organization.

“I am incredibly proud of the work FFA members do yearround to support and promote Indiana agriculture,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, secretary of agriculture. “National FFA Week is a great opportunity for our FFA members to show their community, schools and neighbors what FFA and serving others is all about. I am excited to see the work completed by these young leaders during this week-long celebration.”

Starting in 1948, the National FFA Board of Directors designated a week-long celebration to recognize George Washington’s example and legacy as a leader and farmer. For the past 74 years, FFA members across the country have taken part in agricultural, leadership and service-based activities during National FFA Week.

“FFA has a strong history in agriculture and in community service,” said Bruce Kettler, Indiana State Department of Agriculture director. “This week is a great

opportunity for FFA members to give back to their community and their school and to recruit new members to join this outstanding organization.”

Tamara Ketchen, director of the Indiana FFA Association, is looking forward to seeing all the work done this week in FFA chapters across the state.

“National FFA Week is a time for local chapters to highlight their programs showcasing their success and passion for agriculture,” Ketchen said. “We also use this as an opportunity to recognize community supporters and broadcast the mission of the organization.”

During the week, chapters host a variety of events to educate, advocate and celebrate the agricultural industry. From a school’s petting zoo to a farmers’ breakfast, these activities pay homage to the dedication and commitment of today’s agriculturalists. Tippecanoe Valley Can Patrick, Vikings wake up the echoes?

It’s going to take some work, and maybe a little luck, but a confident and veteran Tippecanoe Valley basketball program is eyeing some hardware this postseason.

The meter stick was met Feb. 15, where Valley hosted the No. 1 team in the state in NorthWood. The two teams played a tight defense contest until the fourth quarter, where NorthWood pulled away for a 10-point win on Rita Price Simpson Court.

It’s that contest Valley will gauge itself in the postseason as NorthWood is the team to beat in the Class 3-A No. 21 tournament. But while NorthWood is the targeted program, Valley has done plenty of “what about us?” in flipping a disappointing 2020-21 season into a 202122 campaign that had the Vikings finish 7-2 in a tough Three Rivers Conference and go toe-to-toe with three of the top teams in the state in John Glenn, Marian and NorthWood.

What head coach Chad Patrick will point to is his team came up short against all of those challenges, and will need to get those right with NorthWood standing in the way at the Wawasee sectional.

Valley can score with the best of them, having four players in double figures this season, led by Tayde Kiser’s 14 points per game (through Feb. 15). Nolan Cumberland is right behind at 13 points per game and both Riley Shepherd and Dawson Perkins are hitting for 10 points a night. Braden Shepherd is averaging seven points per night, but has a slasher ability to get to the rack and convert.

Perkins is a defensive monster for the Vikings in the middle, pulling down a team-leading seven caroms a night and also is blocking over two shots a contest. Both Kiser and Cumberland are hauling in over five boards a night while Kiser is dishing over three dimes a game.

Valley has seen valuable minutes from regulars Landon Walters, Cooper Walls, Dom Welk and Dylan Neese.

One area Valley has struggled is assist/turnover ratio, where Valley averages close to 11 assists a game, but commits 13 turnovers per contest, which have bit them in losses to Glenn, Peru and Marian.

The sectional will all be chasing No. 1 NorthWood, which won 20 of its first 21 games and is on a mission to avenge its heartbreaking loss in the regional finals last March. A two-headed monster of Cade Brenner and Ian Raasch are on All-State level tracks.

West Noble doesn’t have the gaudy record, but it has one of the top players in the sectional in Austin Cripe, who is scoring more than 20 points per night for the Chargers. Wawasee has struggled this season, but is playing on its home court, where four of its first five wins took place. Lakeland is situated in a very loaded Northeast Corner Conference and has played most teams tough, but just doesn’t have a closer to replace the graduated Brayden Bontrager.

Cougars setting up for possible title run There’s always been one obstacle in Lakeland Christian Academy’s way in the basketball state tournament. This year, all that could stand in LCA’s path to its first sectional title could just be itself.

Whether it was a juggernaut Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian when LCA traveled east to sectional 51, or Southwood when LCA was reassigned south to where it now resides in sectional 53, there was always a perennial state-ranked someone in LCA’s way. That will change this year, as LCA will likely come in with the top record and a target on its backs for the Southern Wells sectional.

The incumbent champion Southwood will still be in the mix, and until someone beats them, likely the favorite, but the Knights won’t be an overwhelming juggernaut. Having won four sectional titles in the past five years, including a semi-state run a year ago and a state appearance in 2018, the Knights have the postseason pedigree. However, Southwood is hovering around the .500 mark and haven’t won two games in a row since winning four in a row wrapped around Christmas break.

The Knights, on the other hand, play a tough schedule primarily comprised of bigger schools, and have quality wins over Wabash, Whitko and Maconaquah in the Three Rivers Conference and played Madison-Grant and Tippecanoe Valley tough in close losses.

The remainder of the sectional all have lopsided win/loss records, North Miami, Northfield, Smith Academy and host Southern Wells all struggling this season.

That leaves LCA, which sat at 11-8 on the year as of Feb. 15 and winners of five of six games up to that point.

The Cougars started the year off just 4-4 under the guidance of second-year head coach Jake Ritchie, but started the hot streak with a blowout of Clinton Christian, then got its signature win over Class 1-A ranked Argos, followed by successive wins over sectional foes Southern Wells, Smith Academy and Northfield.

It’s a seasoned roster for the Cougars, led by Landon Gause, Seth Martin and Hunter Rice. Martin paces the team scoring around 14 points per night and hauls in 6.5 rebounds a game as he continues to grow. Gause is pitching in over 12 points per night and has the ability to double that number as a competent three-point shooter. Rice, the team’s floor leader at the point, is scoring just under 13 points per night and is dishing 4.5 assists a game to boot as the floor general.

Silas Gagnon has also been a key contributor for the Cougars, the big man recording just under nine points and eight rebounds per contest as LCA’s main option at the glass. Peter Koller adds another big body in the interior and Micah Martin offers some scoring touch on the wing.

Warsaw Tigers relishing chance to add championship It’s the goal of every basketball team at tournament time, but it just feels a little more accelerated at Warsaw. The boys basketball program is rich in history, and feels it has as good a shot as any at the Class 4-A No. 4 sectional at the historic and venerable North Side Gym in Elkhart.

Warsaw has been moderately streaky, winning two games for every one loss, sitting at 14-7 overall through Feb. 15. The Tigers have some quality road wins, opening the year with a “W” at Columbia City, and piled up others at Northridge, Peru and Marion. Warsaw also knocked off Valpo on its home court and has wins over Pendleton Heights and South Bend Washington in holiday tournament games.

To counter, Warsaw has taken on some top tier programs and came up short in losses to Homestead, NorthWood, Chesterton and Penn, the Kingsmen one of the key targets of the sectional. Warsaw is 3-2 against the field, its other loss in common games was at Concord in midJanuary.

Much like a season ago, Warsaw continues to ride the scoring touch of Jaxson Gould. The junior is scoring 20 points per game (through Feb. 15), shooting 52 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three-point range. Gould also leads his team in rebounding (113), assists (67) and steals (35).

The Tigers, however, aren’t just passing the ball to Gould and clearing out. Judah Simfukwe is dropping in 13.3 points per game, hitting his shots at a 64 percent clip, and just three of his 101 made field goals are from outside the arc. If Simfukwe’s presence wasn’t enough to pair with Gould, Warsaw has a third scorer who is more efficient than the two, that being Drew Heckaman. The forward is scoring 11.4 points per game and hitting 66 percent of his shots, 99 of his 100 makes inside the arc. Heckaman also fills up the stat sheet, with 23 offensive and 59 total rebounds, 40 assists, 22 steals and 11 blocks.

Coach Matt Moore has plenty of options as well. Theo Katris leads the team with 26 offensive rebounds and has 31 assists to go with his 55 percent shooting, Russ Winchester chips in about six points per night and 78 total rebounds, and the collection of Nick Katris, Tyler Kuhn and Isaiah Courtois have all made contributions to the Tiger season.

The sectional itself sits relatively balanced. Penn is the frontrunner, the Al Rhodesled Kingsmen 17-2 entering the final two weeks and with a 4-0 mark against the field, including a 12-point win at the Palace against the Tigers.

Goshen started off as hot as anyone, winning nine of its first 10 but has since cooled off with two wins since then. Northridge is red-hot, the Raiders winners of eight straight after throttling Lakeland by 55 on Feb. 15.

Concord is lurking in the background hovering around .500 and Elkhart as the host can’t be counted out despite having a tough season.

Triton Trojans on course for more tourney glory With a gym full of history on its side, Triton is aligning itself for another run at a sectional title, and potentially more.

Triton brings back most of its regional finals roster, and the team has been rolling for much of the season. With 13 sectional titles to its history, this core group has just one title, and that came last season before needing overtime to put away Caston then losing to Kouts in the regional final. With that experience in hand, Triton is once again ranked in the Class 1-A rankings and primed to challenge for a 14th crown on its home court at the Trojan Trench.

Once again, Tyson Yates and Ashton Oviedo are leading the Trojans on the court. Yates is filling the scoresheet with 14 points per game (through Feb. 15) and is hitting 56 percent of his shots, but is also offering 2.5 assists and 2.4 steals per game as well. Oviedo has slowed just a tad in his senior season in scoring, notching 11.5 points per night, but is a nightmare for other teams, hitting 89 percent of his free throws and is also dishing 2.5 assists and 2.3 steals per game.

Cole Shively has stepped up for the Trojans, adding 11 points per night to the ledger but is scoring at a 51 percent clip from the floor, is second on the team

in rebounds with 72 and leads the team in hitting 41 percent of his three-point attempts. He also has 26 offensive rebounds, atop the team lead.

Bruce Johnson ( 7 ppg, 4 rpg), Cole McKinney (3 ppg, 4 rpg, 2 apg) and Connor Large (25 rebounds, 11 steals) all have made regular contributions. Another major addition to the Trojan lineup is Warsaw transfer Caden Graham, who is hitting 43 percent of his field goal attempts and offering 6.2 ppg plus 22 blocks and 15 steals on the defensive end.

The Class 1-A Sectional 50 lineup is top heavy, with Triton, Argos and Trinity Greenlawn all with at least a dozen wins, and LaCrosse hovering around .500. Culver, West Central and Oregon-Davis have all struggled this season. Through Valentine’s Day, Triton was 3-0 versus the field, but played a tight game against Trinity at the Trench on top of blowout wins at O-D and Culver. Triton’s matchup with Argos was moved from early February to mid-month due to the snow storms.

Both Triton and Argos have been state-ranked for much of the season, the Dragons sectional champions in 2019 and 2020 before falling to Triton in 2021’s championship.

Warriors need to put it together Wawasee basketball has shown it can compete with some of the area’s better programs, but stretches of poor play have put the team on the short end of several results. In a loaded sectional, the Warriors will have to get those stretches cleaned up if it wants to dance on its home court.

Wawasee is the host of Class 3-A’s No. 21 fiveteamer, but may carry the longest odds to advance given it went 0-3 against the field through Feb. 15, and plays an upstart Tippecanoe Valley this weekend ahead of the tournament. The meetings against West Noble and top-ranked NorthWood were lopsided affairs, and those late issues allowed Lakeland to escape in Syracuse at the end of January.

The Warriors do have the benefit of playing at home, where four of their first five wins were achieved.

The team is led by seniors Keaton Dukes and Caden Welty as well as junior Collin Roberson.

Dukes has been up and down this season, but has shown the ability to take over games, including contests against Concord and Bethany Christian. Dukes leads the team scoring just a shade under 15 points a night, and leads the team in threes, steals and is second in rebounds. Welty paces the team in assists, dishing over four per contest and adds about seven points per night as well as serving as one of the team’s top exterior defenders.

Roberson has seen action in every Wawasee contest, leading the team with more than 100 rebounds and leads the team in blocks and has added more than 20 steals to the defensive end of the court.

The future of the program has also had plenty of varsity action in twin brothers Maddux and Myles Everingham, the two combining for more than 70 made three-pointers this season are each scoring at least eight points per night on average. Maddux was a perfect 16-16 from the free throw line through Feb. 15.

Wawasee has also enjoyed contributions from Jay Finlinson and Peyton Felger as part of its normal rotation.
