A divine heart tug blossoms into a vital ministry %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU God continues to work even when we go on vacation.

In fact, that’s when he did his most powerful work in the lives of Winona Lake residents Rod and Nancy Wildman.

In 2006 the Wildmans went on a family vacation to the Dominican Republic, where Punta Cana, a city of 100,000 residents at the stunningly beautiful easternmost point of the island nation, boasts more than 100 resorts.

“I didn’t want to just go to a resort,” recalled Rod. “Nancy and I both felt compelled to reach out to a local church to do something more. We ended up bringing medicine and other supplies, but we quickly realized the people had much greater needs.”

Rod and Nancy, both schoolteachers, said their “hearts were broken” as they learned most of the nation’s children were denied access to school because of poverty.

“There is a huge discrepancy between the haves and the have-nots,” said Rod. “Ten percent of the population is elite, there is a very small middle class and the rest of the nation is poor, with no electricity or running water and dirt floors in their houses.

“The schools that are available are private and cost $300 to $500 a month per student. The poor cannot rise up out of their circumstances because they have no money for education, which is vital to positively impact the children, the families and the communities.”

When they returned home from their vacation, they co-founded 2nd Mile Missions and later obtained 501(c) (3) status.

“Our mission is to spread the love of Christ by disrupting the cycle of poverty in the communities we serve. We do this by providing women and children with educational resources, spiritual enrichment, employment and business op-

portunities,” according to the organization’s website, www.2ndmilemissions. org.

2nd Mile Missions maintains several ministries beyond the original school, which opened August 2010: Hope Academy Hope Academy, an educational facility opened in 2019 in the village of Monte Verde, has a capacity of more than 300 students. The ministry is constructing a new two-story building with 14 classrooms, each capable of accommodating 25 to 30 students. The first floor, currently under construction, will house the elementary school; the second floor will serve high school students.

Staffed with local licensed teachers, the students learn reading, writing, English, science, math, social studies and computer literacy. Bible classes and physical education are also included in the curriculum.

House Of Hope House of Hope, a “safe haven for abandoned girls,” opened its doors in 2015. “When the first 2nd Mile Education Center opened, we began to see many girls who were being abused, neglected and even abandoned,” said Rod. Though they ministered to the girls as much as possible, “we felt God clearly telling us to do more, to build a home for girls seeking shelter from abuse and abandonment.” Under the care of house mothers, up to 12 girls can “begin to heal and focus on their futures.”

Harman desires to bring more wellness opportunities %\ 1,&+2/(77( &$5/621 6WDII :ULWHU Combining her interest in health and wellness along with her experience in the business world, Lisa Harman became one of the founders of Live Well Kosciusko and is currently the president and CEO. With her positions in human resources at both Zimmer Biomet and Grace College, Harman was able to learn about corporate benefits and, on a special trip to New York, even how organizations choose their benefit groups. This included wellness benefits.

Her personal interest in health and wellness benefits began to grow after a family member was diagnosed with liver cancer and passed away in 2014. Soon after, at a routine checkup, one of her daughters was diagnosed with an aggressive form of thyroid cancer.

These instances made Harman excited to receive a grant during her position at Grace College to start a pilot program for cancer screenings.

In her role at Live Well Kosciusko, she and the team support community coalitions including the Cancer Consortium, Tobacco Free Coalition and Employer Wellness Coalition. The Tobacco Free Coalition focuses on improving the health of the Kosciusko County community by urging people to live tobacco free. In the Employer Wellness Coalition, local employers meet with Harman and others to find ways to promote wellness with their

With the Cancer Consortium, a cancer control plan is implemented with a focus on prevention, early detection, treatment and survivorship.

In the last year Harman has been working on another new program based on the five pillars of well-being in partnership with the Kosciusko County Chamber of Commerce, K21 Health Foundation, Zimmer Biomet and the Kosciusko County Community Foundation. Last year Harman helped to gather survey results from members of the community regarding the five pillars of wellbeing: purpose/career, physical, financial, social and community.

This year she’s helping to improve these pillars in the community.

The desire to improve wellness options in Kosciusko County is what led her to help found Live

Well Kosciusko. While she was working on the pilot program at Grace College, she began collaborating with other organizations who had also received the grant.

Throughout the collaboration, Harman noticed the resources other communities had Kosciusko County did not. Live Well Kosciusko came from her desire to “start a nonprofit organization to fill some of those gaps.”

She remains grateful for the opportunities she has received in her life. Harman desires to use her skills and experience to serve the community, make a difference and build on what is already available. She is also on a number of committees promoting health, care and diversity throughout the community.

A summer bird is here in the winter I saw a wren at the bird feeders outside my dining room window last month, January. Wrens are summer birds here, in northern Indiana.

Two days after I saw the wren, still in January, I saw two wrens at my bird feeders.

Wrens are fair weather birds, summer birds in northern Indiana. I called these birds house wrens. I didn’t think of any other wrens being this far north in winter. As I watched them, however, I thought those aren’t house wrens.

House wrens are little brown birds, gray underneath, with a light brown line over each eye.

These birds were reddishbrown on the crown and back, white on the throat, yellow on the belly and had a white line over each eye. Those are Carolina wrens.

But Carolina wrens are yearround residents. They do not migrate. And the northern limit of their range is just south of northern Indiana. Further, Carolina wrens are a distinctly different color.

If somebody had told them they saw house wrens in northern Indiana in January, I’d have been doubtful. If someone had told me they saw Carolina wrens in northern Indiana in January, I’d have been even more doubtful.

But there they were, and still are, coming to my feeders almost daily, probably same time each day,

but I’d have to watch throughout each day to be certain.

There are other wrens in North America. There’s a winter wren that nests in Canada, winters in the southeast and extreme south U.S. It’s a nondescript bird, brown on the back, grayish-brown underneath with a gray line over each eye. There’s a Bewick’s wren, a bird of the south and up the West Coast into Washington and Oregon and winters in Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and northern Florida.

There are one or two marsh wrens, depending on the book you consult. If you go for two, there’s the long-billed and the shortbilled marsh wren. Together they nest across the northern U.S. and southern Canada. They’re similar in brown-backed birds with white throat, white lines on the upper back and a white line over each eye. Together they winter across the southern U.S. There’s a sedge wren, another little brown job, which nests in the northern U.S. and southern Canada and winters from the

East Coast south and west into Texas and south into Mexico.

There are three western wrens, canyon and rock wren, which nest west of the Rockies and north into Canada, and cactus wren, a bird of the southwest, from southwestern Texas to the West Coast and north into central California.

There is also, of course, Jenny wren, a colloquial name from a bird of Europe which has often been applied to the female house wren. So if Jenny is the female house wren, shouldn’t the male of the species be Johnny wren?

Those names seem appropriate for the female builds the nest, lays the eggs, incubates and raises the young, while the male sings and displays. The song of the male house wren is described in one book as bubbling, “one of the merriest and most spontaneous of bird utterances.”

House wrens are common, numerous and beneficial. The examination of more than 50 stomachs found 98% of their food was insects, more than half grasshoppers and beetles, much of the

Harman was born in the area, but moved to Kentucky after fourth grade when her father retired. After graduating from high school, she moved back to Kosciusko County to be closer to her siblings. She lives in the Claypool area with her husband.

They have two daughters and a son as well as one grandson.

In her free time Harman enjoys to hike and bicycle. In the last year when most events were cancelled, she took the opportunity to hike in state parks with her family. She also admits to loving butterflies and landscaping her yard to attract them.

Recently she took some conservation courses with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and is doing her part to remove invasive species from her property.

Echoes of the Past presents check to Warsaw FFA Echoes of the Past had its monthly meeting Sunday, Feb. 7, at which time a check was presented for $750 to the Warsaw Community High School FFA chapter for their assistance with the annual fall festival.

FFA members manned the haunted woods for the group during the two-day event held for the community.

The festival, held in Claypool, was filled with fun activities. A

tractor designed corn maze provided an interesting spin to last year’s event.

Echoes of the Past is a nonprofit organization committed to the preservation and education of historical artifacts with a focus on, but not limited to, agriculture.

The organization hosts numerous events throughout the community, enabling them to support their efforts to support youth agricultural groups in the area.

The group also participates in local parades, tractor shows and plow days. Echoes of the Past also maintains an area at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds, where many activities take place during fair week. There is no minimum age requirement to become a member of the organization.

ENTERTAINMENT Wagon Wheel Jr. has open enrollment for acting classes Wagon Wheel Jr has opened enrollment for the second session of acting classes. It’s also offering voice lessons and piano lessons; both in-person and virtual options are available.

Classes will suspend during Wagon Wheel Jr. production. No classes will meet from March 1327. Detailed dates are listed for each class in the master schedule.

In-person classes are offered from Saturday, Monday and Tuesday Feb. 20 to April 24.

In-person classes will be limited to only 10 students each class.

Masks will be worn during the entire class and remain distant even when working on two-person scenes. Anyone not feeling well may do a virtual class that week.

Theater Adventures Grades 2-4 An introduction to the world of theater. Each class will bring a new adventuresome scene to life as the students learn basic principles of acting. Students will gain confidence and creative experience through storytelling, games, and creative dramatization.

Drama Time Grades 5-7 Learn voice, movement, and acting techniques through beginning scene work and improvisation. Students will practice creating characters by making specific choices to support the text in this introduction to the formal study of acting.

Acting The Script Grades 8-12 This class covers everything from audition techniques to performance. Students will engage in intensive scene work using scenes from contemporary and classic plays to explore the actor’s world of analysis and character interpretation.

Virtual online classes offered from Feb. 24 to April 21.

Virtual classes are an option for families wanting acting opportunities for their students without leaving the house. These classes will be tailored to the online environment with a focus on play and fun. There are no refunds for missed classes.

Online storytelling for grades 2-5 class will be a fun exploration of acting techniques on Zoom.

Games, improvisation, and scripts intended for online theater will keep students engaged and excited to play and learn.

Virtual Acting For Grades 6-12 This class will dive into funfilled online theater that will develop and build on acting techniques that can be used live once theaters open up again.

Voice lessons at the Wagon

Wheel will help to develop a reliable, balanced, and performance ready singing voice across multiple musical genres. development of a balanced musical theatre speech-mix and belt.

Lessons are available for 30-minute and 60-minutes sessions.

‘Echoes of the Past’ in Mentone The annual Mentone tractor, engine, garden tractor show and swap, “Echoes of the Past” will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Friday and Saturday, June 4-5, at the Mentone airport, located at 12296 W. 600 S. Admission to the event is free.

This year’s feature is “original paint,” which means they don’t care if it’s pretty and restored.

They want to see all your tractors, implements, engines, garden tractors or anything else old and cool in its original work clothes.

They also want to see your nice, restored items as well.

Camping sites with electric and water are available for $18

per night. Primitive camping is $10 per night. No dump station is available.

Vendor spots are available for $5 per day. They would like vendors to be related to garden tractors, farm tractors, equipment, engines, tools, farm toys, farm crafts, etc.

Tradexpos Inc. cancels 2021 Fort Wayne Farm Show Tradexpos Inc. has decided to cancel the 32nd annual Fort Wayne Farm Show scheduled to be held at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, March 9, 10, 11.

Thousands of people from Indiana and the surrounding area attend the Fort Wayne Farm Show each year to learn about, compare, and purchase products from leaders in the agricultural industry.

After reviewing the COVID-19 regulations for events set by the state of Indiana, and current rates of infection, Tradexpos Inc. consulted with the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum about alternative options to proceed.

There was not an option that would satisfy both Tradexpos’

high standards for the Fort Wayne Farm Show and the state regulations.

Show director Dan Slowinski commented, “We exhausted multiple safety precautions in order to produce the iconic Fort Wayne Farm Show including: moving the show to March, modifying the floor plan, and providing extra masks and sanitizer. In the end, although canceling the show was a tough decision, I feel we are taking the best course of action for everyone involved. I have no doubt the Fort Wayne Farm Show will return stronger than ever in 2022.”

Tippy Valley chapter plans full slate of activities for FFA Week %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU Led by an all upperclass female slate of officers this year, the Tippecanoe Valley FFA, 42 members and one recent state championship strong, will host several activities during FFA Week, Feb. 20-27.

This year’s officers (with class rank) are: • Hayley Backus, senior, president • Alexis Evans, senior, vice president • Mallory Bowers, junior, treasurer • Sydney Petersen, junior, treasurer • Taylor Biddle, senior, reporter • Nicole Ziemek, junior, sentinel • Ashley Butler, senior, student advisor “Females by far are the leaders in our school chapters,” said Mike Jones, the chapter’s faculty advisor. “Around the nation, the average is about 75% female officers, though having every single officer being female is a bit unusual.”

Balancing the gender scale is the chapter’s all-male forestry team, which captured first place in the state FFA forestry judging competition in late December. The Tippecanoe Valley champs bested 100 other teams in the competition, which entailed identifying 35 different species of leaves, 10 seeds, five woods and 10 diseases and completing a written test on forestry management. The team consisted of Dawson Ault, Skyler Flippo, Ashton Irwin, Lucas Parson, Jesse Scott and Isaac Shafer. Lucas placed fifth overall in individual competition.

The chapter also competed in a livestock skill-a-thon, soils judging, and a chapter meeting contest.

This spring Tippy Valley FFA will participate in: • Section chapter meeting contest, February • Livestock judging, March to May • District leadership contest, April • Poultry judging, April and May • National soils judging competition in Oklahoma, first week of May • FFA parent-member banquet, May FFA Week activities include: • Sunday, Feb. 21, the chapter will partake in a church service, followed by a meal and fellowship activity.

• Tuesday, Feb. 23, chapter members will make educational presentations to the school’s second-grade classes.

Topics change from year to year, and this year’s topic will be animals.

Wednesday is Tractor Drive-In Day and also Tractor, Soil and Safety Day with the first graders invited in from the elementary schools in the Wawasee Community School Corporation. They get to see some farm equipment and learn about agriculture safety.

Warsaw Community High School is entering FFA Week with its spirit intact, in spite of the changes its program has faced as a result of COVID 19.

Some of the activities planned for the week of Feb. 22 to 26 include apparel themes such as “Twin Day,” “America,” “Advisor Look-Alike Day” and “College Apparel Day.” And after school activities include bingo, bowling, community service and a movie night. The classes will also take part in Kahoot Ag Trivia on three days.

“COVID drastically affected activities and competitions,” said Brittany Duncan, vice-president. If not cancelled outright, competitions have taken place virtually, which can be challenging.

Horticulture, forestry, entomology competitions took place with an online platform, often consisting of multiple choice questions. “It was harder to see the pictures to identify specific plants,” Duncan commented.

Worse, the national convention, a celebratory event where FFAers get to meet students from around the country with similar interests, was also virtual. “It was very Continued on page 7

Former Video World receives BZA approval %\ 0$**,( .(1:257+< 6WDII :ULWHU The property which formerly held Video World in Warsaw received Kosciusko County Board of Zoning Appeals approval for renovations Tuesday morning, Feb. 9.

Two Guys & Tools requested a variance for the property located at 970 N. Lake St., Warsaw. The variance would allow roof work to remain and continue at 15 feet, 9 inches from the right of way and allow two overhead doors to be installed.

Hunter Carlile, a representative of Two Guys & Tools, was present at the meeting. He explained his intention with the property is to clean it up and put it up for sale in the near future.

The board had a few concerns regarding the entrance to the parking lot and requested either Two Guys & Tools or the future buyer meet with the highway department. In addition, the property will need to be in compliance with the flood zone ordinance.

Based on those conditions,

the board unanimously approved the request.

The board also heard four requests made by Sky Team Properties and Jon Fussle for apartment buildings in Claypool.

The first set of requests was made by Sky Team Properties for the property located at 110 S. Main St., Claypool.

The request included an exception to allow an 11-unit apartment in a commercial district.

A variance was also requested which would permit 11 units on a tract with 13,967 square feet when 28,000 is required and have no off-street parking when 44 spaces are required.

Clint Ness, property manager, told the board there would be off-street parking available on the lot and a lot the company purchased caddy-corner to the location. He was unable to say for sure how many spaces would be provided.

He also explained before Sky Team Properties bought the property, it was already being maintained as an 11 unit complex. Since taking over the property, a stricter tenant

screening process has been implemented and security cameras installed. In addition, cosmetic upgrades have been made to the units.

The second set of requests, made by Fussle, were for 113, 115 and 117 S. Main St., Claypool. An exception was requested to allow three commercial uses and up to nine apartments with only six on-site parking spots in a commercial and public use district. A variance was requested which would permit mixed uses on an 11,803 square foot tract of land when 30,500 square feet are requested and providing 23 off-street parking spaces when 74 are required.

Attorney Steve Snyder represented Gary Huffman who opposed the request due to parking concerns.

The board voted to table all four requests and asked for a detailed parking plan to be provided. In addition, they requested input from the town of Claypool and an approval letter from the state fire marshal.

The next meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday,

March 9.

In other news, the board approved: • A variance request made

by Ronald Rowe for a property on the south side of EMS T4 Lane, North Webster. The variance permits the construction of a new residence 26 feet from the right of way, 21.5 feet from the water’s edge and 31.49 feet from the river.

• A variance request made

by Gary and Cheryl Furniss for the property located at 11533 N. Memorial Parkway, Cromwell. This permits the construction of a garage addition 25 feet from the right of way.

• An exception request made

by Shafer Rentals for the property located at 6540 E. Old Road 30, Pierceton. This allows for the change and alteration to a non-conforming use by allowing an open porch to remain as placed and allow a residence in a commercial district. It was suggested either Shafer Rentals or the future owner rezone the tract of land to agricultural.

• A variance request made

by Chris Paraschos for the

property located at 40 EMS B42D Lane, Warsaw. This permits the construction of residence additions 3.7 feet from the road right of way, 0.6 feet from the north sideline and 4.4 feet from the south property line.

• A variance request made

These talks will possibly occur other days besides Thursday.

The annual member auction will be held the week of March 8-12 in a virtual format. More details will be announced later.

Hays was the Indiana FFA executive director and a former agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Warsaw who died unexpectedly in September.

Additionally, according to Breanna Thompson, secretary, Warsaw FFA collected 400 pounds of canned goods, which were donated to Combined Community Services.

With the help of Midwest Structural, as well as agriculture students not in FFA, the chapter also adopted a family for Christmas. “It was fun to get everybody’s help,” Thompson exclaimed.

The chapter also held a food fundraiser and was able to sell 600 cases of fruit, cheese and sausage to help pay for future contests, camps and other activities.

As of this writing, the parliamentary procedure team was looking forward to its first team competition, which may not be virtual. Thompson commented she is looking forward to “working together as a team” as well as making “new memories.”

Thompson’s participation in “parli” is an example of how FFA can benefit young people. She described herself as a “shy” seventh grader who, through FFA, “learned how to be open to more ideas.”

Duncan agreed and exhorted others to “dive in. Don’t be afraid to get involved. FFA taught me so much about myself and my future career.” She plans on attending Purdue University and majoring in biology with hopes of going on to veterinary school.

Mary Jane Miller Scholarship offered through Lake City Bank The deadline to accept applications for the Mary Jane Miller Scholarship program is March 31.

Mary Jane Miller Scholarship Trust was established by Mary Jane Miller of Warsaw to provide

financial assistance to students pursuing higher education.

Miller cared greatly for the county and community. Her ambition was to provide scholarships to high school seniors and college students residing in Kosciusko County. Michael Valentine and Lake City Bank are co-trustees of the Mary Jane Miller Trust, according to a news release.

Grace College rolls out new graduate certificate through Purdue Online Grace College and Purdue Online are partnering to offer Grace College students an online graduate certificate in corporate communication strategy. Grace students of all majors can now apply to the program, and courses will be made available starting this summer.

Completion of the certificate requires four graduate courses, which students will take during their fourth year at Grace. After graduating, students have the option to apply at Purdue Online to use their 12 earned credits toward the online MS in communication. At that point, students will only need to take six more courses to complete their master’s degree.

“This certificate is an ideal option for two types of Grace students,” explained Dr. Lauren Rich, chair of the department of humanities at Grace College.

“The first is those who are thinking about graduate school, but don’t know whether it’s a good fit.

The certificate allows students to test the waters of graduate school without taking the full plunge.”

CCS receives K21 grant for building security K21 Health Foundation recently approved a grant of $50,009 to Combined Community Services for the purchase and installation of a security system for its facility. The organization, which helps meet clients’ needs with both emergency assistance and longterm financial self-sufficiency programs, realized the need for greater security to protect both guests and staff and turned to K21 for help.

However, the town had been having difficulties contacting the company. The town’s original contract was with KC Online, which has been acquired by Indiana Telephone Network.

Shortill and Meek gave the town a new postal address and additional contact information for the company.

In other business, the council: • Heard from council member Tim Croy that he’s encountered a lot of people in town putting up fences and sheds without permits.

He’d like to remind people they have to follow the formal process before putting them up.

• Heard from Croy that several vehicles got stuck on the railroad tracks near the downtown after

the snow over the weekend. Several state highway trucks plow in that area, but they’re not required to plow the tracks. He told Utilities Superintendent Josh Shepherd to keep an eye out on that area.

• Heard from Croy, who thanked Chris and Emily White for their work in picking up tree limbs that had fallen at the cemetery from winter weather.

• Heard from Shepherd that Craig Welding has finished making the legs for part of a gazebo to go up at the town’s park at Main and Morgan streets. He said someone has volunteered to cover part of the cost for the legs with someone else to possibly pay for the rest.

• Heard from Shepherd who thanked Barnwood Masters of Mentone for providing boards for hauling snow in his dump truck.

Update on Notre Dame Cathedral’s reconstruction %\ '$5/$ 0&&$0021 *XHVW :ULWHU Do you remember the traumatic fire that nearly destroyed the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France?

We covered it for several columns in 2019 when it occurred. I decided to go back and investigate the progress (or lack thereof) and report my findings.

On reconstruction, it turns out French President Emmanuel Macron had initially put a wrench into the wishes of the masses, who loved Notre Dame Cathedral, by supporting a far different design than the original that burned. He wanted to radically change this 850-year-old structure into something contemporary. He told the media, “I want to rebuild the cathedral even more beautifully. I want it to be finished within five years.” He met a wall of resistance. The French citizenry loved the old, original cathedral.

In fact, it was reported more visitors traveled each year to see Notre Dame than visited the Eiffel Tower.

So, like most politicians, Macron backed off from losing all those votes and the decision was made to bring it back exactly as it had been before.

His decision may also have been a result of knowing the French National Assembly was passing a law in which Notre Dame was to be redone in such a way as to “preserve the historic, artistic and architectural interest of the monument.”

Macron was not stupid. He bowed to the citizens and the assembly. Macron, in this battle had not counted on another unexpected

deterrent — COVID. No one in France, of course, could have predicted the additional problems that would rain down on them with the catastrophic deadliness of COVID. This has caused the project to close completely for three months and to partially resume last June.

Macron’s five-year estimate seems to be a bit unreachable at this point.

Other impediments to the reconstruction have been lack of protection for the workers due to the unstable debris overhead; the heavy oak and lead roof, wooden vaulted ceiling, and scaffolding from the unfinished restoration that had been underway before the fire. If that weren’t bad enough, in an article by Nicole Gelinas in the New York Post, “The fire transformed 400 tons of solid lead into dust — four times more lead, on environmental group points out, than France emits in a year.”

Many schools in the area, along with summer camps and day care, facilities had dangerous levels of lead requiring HAZMAT specialists to keep the children, workers, and community safe from the dangerous lead poisoning.

Back in 1859, a beautiful spire, rising more than 300 feet into the sky, was added to Notre Dame by famous architect, Viollet-le-Duc. Some discussion was held over recreating the spire, which had collapsed in the fire.

Just before Christmas, a large secondary project was completed by removing all of the burned roof scaffolding overhead, containing 400 tons of lead that threatened to collapse and bring more harm to the

structure, including more danger to the workers below.

This removal allowed interior work to begin in earnest.

We will continue to monitor the progress of this artistic relic, as it is rebuilt, with a look at what has happened to so many of the precious paintings and art and other artifacts that were, for the most part salvaged without damage.
