There is one thing in the world of newspapers and publishing that is a constant and that is change. From the desktop publishing revolution and computer technology explosion that have affected us all, to tth ever-evolving retail market, change the ha been constant for us. h has And a continuum for almost 50 yyea has also been your copy of ‘the PAyears PER Now, that is evolving and adapting P PER.’ o ever fluid market place. too our You hold in your hands the last copy off th the Elkhart County edition of ‘the PAPE ER. PER.’ N News and advertising from southern Ellkh Elkhart, Noble and Marshall Counties will m merge into the Kosciusko County edition of ‘the PAPER’ and that edition’s circulat tion will increase considerably. Born on April 13, 1973, this freedistribution newspaper has endured for almost half a century. The publication came about as merchants were requesting broader coverage for their advertising dollars. Total market coverage publications, offering free distribution, began to catch on and area m merchants asked publishers for wider ci circulation. The publishers of The Mail-Journal at Milford were convinced the time was rig Kosciusko County had the first issue right. ‘t PAPER’ published on June 30, 1971. of ‘the w an immediate success with advertisIt was ers and readers alike. Its sister publication, the one you hold

in your hands and bearing the same name, was delivered to most every household in Elkhart County outside the city of Elkhart and its rural routes on April 13, 1973. The third edition came out March 3, 1976, to serve Elkhart city and its rural routes. Combined the circulation of all three editions totaled over 76,000 copies. From the first issue ‘the PAPER’ was packed with news and advertising from the communities and merchants throughout Elkhart County. And from the very beginning, the publication was well received, proving a free distribution newspaper in Elkhart County was an idea whose time had come. Now, 50 years later, the office doors at 134 S. Main St., Goshen, will officially close Friday, March 11. The Papers Incorporated was formed by Arch and Della Baumgartner and Ron and Gloria Baumgartner in 1972, but the family has been in the newspaper business since 1939. From the small weekly publication, The Milford Mail which employed just three employees to produce, the business has grown to a successful enterprise. Currently, there are over 130 employees working at either the corporate offices in Milford or from satellite offices in Warsaw, Syracuse and Rochester, who help produce company publications. The publications include the flagship publication and the only subscription newspaper of the company, The Mail-Journal; Kosciusko County edition of ‘the PAPER;’ Shopping Guide News of Fulton County; InkFreeNews.com, a digital newspaper serving Kosciusko and surrounding counties; four monthly publications of Senior Life,

serving Elkhart, Kosciusko, Allen, St. Joseph, Marshall, LaPorte, Porter and Lake counties, as well as Indiana Auto & RV, Michigan Auto & RV and Illinois Auto & RV, LAKElife, glo magazine, Michiana House and Home and The Municipal. Non newspaper or magazine entities of The Papers are SpectraPrint and Kidder Media Indiana. SpectraPrint creates membership directories and guides for local chambers of commerce, cities and towns, plus lake and fishing directories and business and industrial promotional pieces. Kidder Media Indiana publishes printed newsletters, e-newsletters and websites for many of the school corporations in our state. The Papers Incorporated has steadily adapted to the ever changing market place. Steve Meadows, marketing director, stated “we made tremendous investment into InkFreeNews.com a popular daily digital newspaper. With over 100,000 unique visitors per week, it has become a very important source of news for the region. In addition, we launched LAKElife magazine in 2020 and it is coming into its third season. The response from advertisers and readers has been phenomenal. “We continue to evaluate our broad range of over 16 monthly and weekly publications.” Ron Baumgartner, president of The Papers Inc., commented the readers and merchants of Elkhart County have served us well over the life of this publication and “we deeply thank you. “We think ‘the PAPER’ will leave quite a void in the communities we have served for 50 years. I know its absence will leave a void in us.”
