Born on April 13, 1973, this freedistribution newspaper has endured for almost half a century. The publication came about as merchants were requesting broader coverage for their advertising dollars. Total market coverage publications, offering free distribution, began to catch on and area m merchants asked publishers for wider ci circulation.

Its sister publication, the one you hold

in your hands and bearing the same name, was delivered to most every household in Elkhart County outside the city of Elkhart and its rural routes on April 13, 1973. The third edition came out March 3, 1976, to serve Elkhart city and its rural routes. Combined the circulation of all three editions totaled over 76,000 copies.

From the first issue ‘the PAPER’ was packed with news and advertising from the communities and merchants throughout Elkhart County. And from the very beginning, the publication was well received, proving a free distribution newspaper in Elkhart County was an idea whose time had come.

Now, 50 years later, the office doors at 134 S. Main St., Goshen, will officially close Friday, March 11.

The Papers Incorporated was formed by Arch and Della Baumgartner and Ron and Gloria Baumgartner in 1972, but the family has been in the newspaper business since 1939. From the small weekly publication, The Milford Mail which employed just three employees to produce, the business has grown to a successful enterprise.

What Payne enjoys about being a principal is he has the privilege of dealing with a wide variety of students and adults.

Kids are wrestling with identity issues. “Society tells kids what they are and what they are not. Again, I want them to know that they are gifted and valued for who they are created to be.

Payne believes kids as well as adults need to know they are cared for and they matter.

“I meet people where they are in life. I try to be there when the kids get off the bus in the morning and get on the bus after school. I touch base with them in the hallways. With adults, I try to be accessible and encouraging.”

He met his wife Dawn when they were both basketball players at Bethel University. The Paynes have four children: Maddy, 20, a sophomore at Bethel University; J.J., 17; Claire, 15; and Reid, 11. The family loves being together, and you can usually find them attending their kids’ sporting events.

The Paynes are involved at Granger Community Church.

They co-teach a discipleship class called Core 201. “Discipleship happens when we connect in relationships. That’s our goal at GCC and as a family.”

I just read an article in The Epoch Times newspaper I subscribe to, written by two guys, a sociologist and a psychologist.

They identified what “social anger” is all about, very well written.

“Anger is when emotion overrides intellect.” Plain and simple.

In short, when intelligence is in short supply and the emotion level is in a greater supply, the emotions of the issue take over. So, in our society, intelligence is in a short supply so “anger” takes over. This is the why BLM and ANTIFA is such a violent organization. They lack intelligence. Teacher loves making a difference in the lives of people

By LAURIE LECHLITNER Staff Writer “I started my career in the business world,” stated Derek Sallee, Middlebury. “But I felt I could make a bigger difference in the lives of people being a teacher. I’m in my 15th year of teaching third grade at Middlebury Elementary School and love it.”

Sallee got his business degree from Purdue and spent the first 13 years of his career in the business world. He was district manager at Aramark Services in South Bend. He then attended night school at Bethel University and got his teaching degree.

“My wife Deb is a teacher. I remember being drawn to what she was able to accomplish in the lives of her students. I wanted to do the same.”

After doing his student teaching at Middlebury Elementary, Sallee got a job there the very next year. “I’ve been at the same school teaching third graders for 15 years. I love that age group.

They’re still excited about coming to school. I work in a positive atmosphere with marvelous students and coworkers.”

Sallee loves teaching his stu-

dents math. “I enjoy the handson activities we’re able to do in class in the area of math. I also like to read aloud to my students for fun. I believe it’s really important for adults to read aloud to kids. When we’re enjoying a book together, it’s our favorite time of the day.”

Standardized testing is challenging to Sallee as well as many of the students in his classroom.

“There are many factors that come into play when the kids are taking those tests. The first is stress. Another is the test format itself. At this age, I’m not sure it’s a true measurement of what my students know.”

As a teacher, Sallee has seen a lot of changes in the lives of students throughout the years.

“I love using technology in the classroom. But in the educational world, it can become a distraction to learning. Kids see things on the internet that maybe they shouldn’t. They are having to deal with more issues than I did at their age.”

He believes the biggest needs of kids of all ages is parental support. “Kids need their parents. I think moms and dads can help their kids learn by reading to

them every night. Positive interaction with parents helps young people excel.”

Derek and his wife Deb lead a small group of college-age adults each Sunday evening in their home. “I enjoy seeing their vision of the world,” Sallee remarked.

“The young adults come for spiritual purposes and are interested in helping make the world a better place. I believe each of them are going to do great things in life. They’re truly deep thinkers.”

The Sallees were high school sweethearts. “We began dating during our sophomore year at South Central High School near LaPorte. This March 12 marked our 28th anniversary. We have two sons: Trevor, 22 and Tanner, 20.”

Sallee enjoys riding his bike down the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail. He and Deb love a good game of pickleball. He’s an avid reader. As a family, the Sallees enjoy spending spring breaks on the beach in Florida. In summer, they hike the mountain trails from a Gatlinburg, Tenn., cabin.

“I want young people to realize that they don’t have to be perfect.

However, each one of us can always be kind.”

Goshen Health Nurse honored with DAISY Award In 2022, Goshen Health began participating in DAISY, Diseases Attacking the Immune System, Awards, an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. Patients and their families were invited to nominate nurses they felt had provided them with exceptional care.

Jeannette Matthews and her husband, Dennis Hemphill (who goes by Tom), nominated Angela Scott, RN in day surgery. After her husband had undergone a difficult treatment for prostate cancer, Matthews wrote, “… the procedure left him discouraged and in pain. That’s where the second-floor recovery nurses came in. I can’t say enough good about all the nurses, but especially Angie. There was no stone unturned to make him as comfortable as possible, helping soothe him. She stayed even though all of her other patients were gone ….. We still talk about her and how much of a difference she made, how she took

time for us.”

“We are so pleased to honor the compassionate and excellent work of our nursing colleagues through the DAISY Award,” said Julie Crossley, Goshen Health chief nursing officer. “We celebrate the difference Angie made in Jeannette’s and Tom’s lives, at a time when they especially needed compassionate care.”

Matthews and Hemphill were present when Scott was presented with the DAISY Award, Feb. 4. As a DAISY honoree, Scott received a sculpture called “The Healer’s Touch,” along with benefits and opportunities to attend a conference of her choice and receive reduced tuition for certifications and chamber courses.

We have a lot of poultry in this region. Between Elkhart, LaGrange, Noble and Kosciusko counties, our area has one of the largest concentrations of chickens and ducks in the U.S. That’s why I get really concerned when I learn that a highly pathogenic form of avian flu, H5N1, was found in turkey flocks in Dubois county a few weeks ago.

This is very serious stuff. When H5N1 is found, the Board of Animal Health draws a 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) circle around the farm, and checks all farms and

They keep expanding the circle until they cannot find the infection. The birds are euthanized and buried, and the buildings are decontaminated. The control measures can even affect traffic patterns, as they do not want to spread the disease on cars, trucks or farm equipment. Biosecurity protocols like disposable boots, gloves and clothing become the rule.

Remember how foot and mouth disease shut down portions of Great Britain in 2001? Six million cows, pigs and sheep were put down on about 2,000 farms. It took seven months to get under control.

Years of work improving genetics on farms went down in weeks. The economy in that region suffered for years, estimated at $11 billion dollars in losses ($17 billion in today’s dollars). Some diseases are just that serious.

We do not want this to happen in our community or in our poultry industry. It would be devastating. Taking biosecurity measures to a new level now is critically important to fight diseases we have now, and preventing the

diseases that are lurking outside the barn door.

Think about the many ways an infection could enter your facility, and set up standards to protect your business.

• Keep visitors to a minimum.

• Limit visits to other farms.

• Keep pets and wild animals out of the building.

• Practice sound rodent control.

• Avoid contact with non-commercial poultry and wild birds.

• Inspect your flock daily.

• Provide good ventilation.

• Dispose of manure and litter properly.

• Keep the area around your building and feed bins clean.

• Be sure egg pallets are cleaned before they return to the farm.

• Find out where delivery vehicles have been and if they were cleaned before allowing them onto your farm.

• Dispose of dead birds properly.

If you have poultry, whether it is a few birds in the backyard or large houses full of chickens or ducks, it is a good idea to take biosecurity to a new level soon.

Goshen will be part of statewide One State / One Story: World of Wonders program Goshen Public Library has been awarded a Community Read grant of $750 from Indiana Humanities to participate in a statewide read of Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s “World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments.” Thirty-one other communities will be reading the book as part of One State / One Story: World of Wonders.

Nezhukumatathil’s collection of short essays explores the wonders of nature which defy easy depiction. She takes us through her past experiences and shares guidance she has received from our world’s fierce and funny creatures.

The axolotl teaches us to smile, even in the face of unkindness; the touch-me-not plant shows us how to shake off unwanted advances; the narwhal demonstrates how to survive in hostile environments. Even in the strange and the unlovely, Nezhukumatathil finds beauty and kinship. For it is this way with wonder: it requires

that we are curious enough to look past the distractions in order to fully appreciate the world’s gifts. These lessons are further supplemented by beautiful illustrations by Fumi Mini Nakamura throughout the book.

“We are excited to have selected ‘World of Wonders’ for our third One State / One Story,” said Keira Amstutz, president and CEO of Indiana Humanities. “We think Nezhukumatathil’s beautiful and thought-provoking essays will spark conversations among Hoosiers about our natural world and our place in it.”

Miller announces candidacy for township advisory board Jen Miller has filed paperwork at the Elkhart County courthouse to run for Elkhart Township Advisory board member in 2022.

Miller stated “There hasn’t been a Democrat on the Elkhart Township Advisory Board in my lifetime of 34 years. It’s time to add some diversity to the board. One of the primary responsibilities of all township trustees’ offices is to provide poor relief.

I understand Elkhart Township’s office has more capacity to fulfill this basic duty. There could be a lot more done to help struggling families in Elkhart Township, made more severe by the pandemic. I’m interested in helping those who need it.”

Former Goshen Mayor Allan Kauffman added “I’m pleased to see Jen throw her hat in the ring. It’s

always been an uphill climb to elect Democrats in Elkhart County. But there is room at the table for more than one party’s voice. Goshen has proved when we put good people like Jen on a ballot, more Democrats, Independents and moderate Republicans will respond favorably.

Together with her husband, Dustin, they are parents of a 9-year old son who attends Chamberlain Elementary School.

Goshen Public Library joins statewide OverDrive consortium Attention OverDrive/Libby users. Goshen Public Library will be joining the statewide OverDrive consortium called Indiana Digital Library, slated to launch March 1.

What does this mean for GPL users? It means you will have a much larger collection of digital titles to choose from.

Nearly 200 public libraries in the state including Goshen Public Library will all share the OverDrive

platform to create a statewide consortium of e-books and magazines.

This new consortium - made up of libraries that serve populations under 150,000 - will benefit libraries, taxpayers and library users.

Patrons of consortium member libraries will have the ability to borrow materials from both their own library’s collections and the member library collections. The State Library is paying the platform fees for the consortium and 100% of the member libraries’ fees will be spent on materials.

A volunteer library team will also assist with collection development for libraries and will help

ensure the efficient usage of the consortium’s funds. Libraries may either purchase titles for their collection on their own or may choose to assign their funds to the collection development team.

“The new Indiana Digital Library consortium will be a great service and benefit to Indiana libraries and the customers of Indiana libraries. This collaboration is a great example of Indiana libraries working together to provide high quality services to library users,” said Jake Speer, state librarian.

Hoosier Basketball Magazine tabs Top 60 senior girls Attached is the list of local girls who were named in the Hoosier Basketball Magazine’s Top 60 senior girls basketball players for 2021-22 as compiled by Hoosier Basketball Magazine. These girls were selected from approximately 1,400 senior players statewide.

Statistical evaluation, game observation and statewide research were conducted during the season

and throughout the state tournament to determine Hoosier Basketball Magazine’s Top 60.

Two sessions of the 41st annual Top 60 Senior Workout were hosted

by Hoosier Basketball Magazine in conjunction with the IHSAA and the IBCA Sunday, March 6, at Beech Grove High School in Indianapolis.

Crouch, treasurer and IAC celebrate Hoosier Women Artists Recently Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Treasurer Kelly Mitchell and the Indiana Arts Commission hosted a reception to celebrate the 2022 Hoosier Women Artists exhibition at the statehouse.

“It brings me joy to see the return of the Hoosier Women Artist exhibition,” Crouch said. “We received so many great submissions this year and numerous pieces are beyond incredible. I look forward to displaying these in my office throughout the next year. Our state is blessed with talented Hoosier women and I want them all to continue to share their artistic talents with others.”

The Hoosier Women Artists program was established in 2008 to celebrate the importance of the arts in Indiana’s communities and showcase the work of talented female artists throughout the state. The annual exhibition was announced in January, and the 44 honorees were selected out of more than 200 entries. The entries were judged by a panel of Indiana visual arts professionals and then selected for display by Crouch and Mitchell.

Goshen artist Ida Short will have her piece “And I’m Screaming Out” displayed in Chief Justice Loretta Rush’s office.

The panelists include: Shelby Nower, Artist, Decatur; Kassie Woodworth, Artist, Indianapolis; and Torri Williams, Community Organizer, Marion.

“The artwork we receive every year provides a bit of happiness to all in my office. Art has a unique ability to draw people together in conversation,”

Mitchell said. “I love the opportunity to showcase Indiana women artists in the Statehouse, and to give these talented Hoosiers well-deserved recognition and appreciation.”

The 44 pieces of artwork will be displayed in the following offices: Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch;

Treasurer of State Kelly Mitchell; Secretary of State Holli Sullivan; Auditor of State Tera Klutz; Chief Justice Loretta Rush; Secretary of Education Katie Jenner; and Governor’s Residence in honor of the First Lady.

John A. Mikel, 96, Wakarusa, died at 10:15 a.m.

Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at the Maples at Waterford Crossing.

He was born March 5, 1925, in St. Joseph County, to Virgil and Florence (Hawkins) Mikel. On Dec. 30, 1950, at the Wakarusa Church of the Brethren, he married Dora Marie (Holmes) Mikel and she died April -2+1 $ 0,.(/ 3, 2001.

Surviving are a daughter, Jane (Jeffrey) Jacobs, Goshen; sons, James (Tina) Mikel, Wakarusa, and Steve (Sandy) Mikel, Wakarusa; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one on the way; four great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Mikel of Arkansas, William Mikel of Florida and George Mikel of Bremen; and three sisters, Virginia Smith of Elkhart, Carolyn (Marvin) Rutherford of Bristol, Tenn., and Erma Jackson of Elkhart.

Preceding him in death are his parents; wife, Dora; siblings, Bemis Mikel Sr., Joy (Frank) VanDeKeere, Mary Mikel, Ruth Mikel, Wilma (Jim) Hepler and Ruby (Bob) Unsicker; and brother-in-law, Art Smith.

John worked as a mechanic at Gate’s Chevrolet, Mishawaka, and was a farmer. He was a member of the American Legion Post 50, Mishawaka, a member of the Wakarusa Church of the Brethren and a member of the Freemasons. He enjoyed spending time with his family and working on the farm.

There will be a graveside service for family and friends 2 pm Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at Olive (West) Cemetery. Pastor John Schrock will officiate. Memorial donations may be directed to Traditions Hospice, 1820 E. Day Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545.

Bonneyville Mill to host Bake Day Visitors will have the opportunity to sample delicious baked goods made fresh from Bonneyville Mill’s own stone-ground flour at a Bake Day event being held at the Baldwin One-room Schoolhouse in Bonneyville Mill County Park from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, March 12,.

Dating back to the mid-1830s, Bonneyville is Indiana’s oldest continuously operating gristmill and offers visitors a taste of local history with fresh stone-ground flour.

The Bake Day will focus on the basics of making yeast bread from scratch. Participants will be able to see the entire bread-making process using Bonneyville Mill’s own stone-ground flour to make

beautiful whole wheat loaves of bread. The bake day will also include freshly baked samples and a 2 pound bag of flour for bakers to bring home.

Cost is $3 per person and open to all ages and experience levels.

Boys & Girls Clubs select Youth of Year winners Four outstanding teens from Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County have been chosen to represent their clubs after 2022’s Youth of The Year competition.

Satarah Tittle from Elkhart Club, Kiley Hutton from Goshen Club, Andrew Deal from Middlebury Club and Paige Truman from Nappanee Club were selected after months of preparation.

Youth of The Year is the Boys & Girls Clubs’ signature effort to foster a new generation of leaders. It focuses on leadership skills such as communication, goal-setting and teamwork.

Candidates for the honor write several essays, participate in interviews with judges, prepare and deliver speeches, develop a resume of their activities and solicit letters of recommendation about their leadership and potential.

All four of the Elkhart County winners are heavily involved in their school and club activities.

They cited that experience in their interviews with the judges.

“The activities you can get involved with at club are so incredible,” Deal said. “The experience and friends I have wouldn’t be possible without it.”

“When I’m at club it gives me something to do that’s impactful,” Tittle said. “It’s also a comfortable place.”

“Right now, self-awareness is a big issue,” said Truman. “A lot of people my age can’t open up because they have been isolated during COVID. We need to teach them how to open up.”

Hutton said social media is also a concern.

“It affects teens in a way that’s hard for people to understand.

We take social media and mask our problems with it. It’s sad to

see how negative it can be if you let it,” she said.

Hutton was selected from among the four to represent Elkhart County at the state Youth of The Year competition, with hopes of moving on to the regional and national competitions.

Six teens, including five regional winners and a national military youth winner, advance to the National Youth of the Year Celebration, where one outstanding young person is named Boys

& Girls Clubs of America’s national teen spokesperson.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County began operations in 1956, and today the clubs provide programming and services for the most at-risk boys and girls within the community. Goshen Painters’ Guild resumes spring classes, workshops Spring 2022 painting classes and all-day Saturday workshops for adults 18 and over resume next week at the Goshen Painters’ Guild at their studios on the second floor, 212 W. Washington, one block west of Main in downtown Goshen next to the Farmer’s Market.

Four visiting artists and two guild professionals will teach classes in March, April and May suitable for skill levels ranging from beginning to advanced.

guild has also opened registration for its annual three-day workshop to be taught by nationally acclaimed painter Sandra Strohschein, set for Sept. 16-18.

This month, “Beginning Watercolor” will again be offered four Tuesday evenings from 6-8 p.m., March 8, 15, 22 and 29. Denise Potter, M.A, retired art educator and former guild head coordinator, will teach the course which is one of the group’s most popular. The course covers basics plus ‘”tips and

tricks,’” according to Potter. The tuition is $120 with all supplies furnished.

On Saturday, March 12, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., masters-trained art therapist, Kortney Malone, BFA, LMHC, who is also a guild member, offers a day of healing art expression in her course “Creating Resiliency through Art.” This class will be especially helpful to those dealing with anxiety, grief or other trauma to come through it feeling stronger. The tuition is $100. Beginners through advanced painters are welcome to register. There will be a one-hour lunch break.

Following registration, a short supply list will be sent.

Also in March, visiting artist K. T . Schindler will offer “Coffee and Canvas” Saturday, March 26, from

1-4 p.m. With her instruction and guidance, everyone will paint the same subject using acrylics in a relaxed, friendly gathering at the guild. This offering is suitable for beginners as well as experienced painters. The tuition for this session, including coffee or tea and light refreshments, is $45.

The guild has agreed current CDC community guidelines pertaining to COVID-19 health policies will be followed for all classes and meetings.

City Of Goshen sensory trail app now available A mobile app connecting the community with local trails through various senses has now launched for all to use.

The Ashley VanVurst Sensory Trail app can now be downloaded on the Apple App Store and Google’s Play Store.

The City of Goshen and ADEC Inc. combined efforts to develop the sensory trail project to connect persons with disabilities to the natural environment’s physiological and psychological benefits and provide them with the opportunity to access technology that can enhance the interactive trail experience.

The project includes access for both persons who can actively participate and those who may be homebound, said Theresa Sailor, grant writer and educator for the Department of Environmental Resilience. Sailor led the project by securing funding and

coordinating the development of the app.

“This app is transformative in connecting persons with disabilities to the natural environment in an educational and interactive way,” Sailor said. “It allows people to select the types of things they would like to find and go at their own pace and on their terms.”

The sensory trail includes four miles of two existing public trails with open, calm areas, water and natural habitats. Naturalist interns cataloged over 900 features while local computer science students at Goshen College developed an app to provide a guided sensory experience so users can learn, relax and engage the senses through touching, smelling, seeing, hearing and tasting the world around them.

The project integrates physical, and app accessibility fea-

tures designed to accommodate adults with diverse disabilities, including physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities.

As part of this project, the city established a lending library of 10 iPads at Reith Interpretative Center to ensure persons can access the trail app and participate in the complete trail experience.

Yoder Construction, Bradley Company, and Garden Court Apartments hosted a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Garden Court Apartments Saint Katharina Kasper Serenity Place located at 1804 W. Jefferson St., Plymouth, Thursday, March 10, marking the grand opening of the new building.

Rod Ludwig, the senior managing director of multi-housing for Bradley Company, stated, “We are so excited to finally be able to announce the grand opening of Saint Katharina Kasper Serenity Place! This has been in the works for over five years when a group of concerned citizens and organizations saw the need to tackle the issue of homelessness in Marshall County. It wasn’t easy, but we will soon see families moving in that will finally be able to have the stability of knowing where they will sleep each night.

Premier Arts to hold auditions for musical Premier Arts has issued an audition notice for “The SpongeBob Musical” at 6:30 p.m. March 10, and 1 p.m. March 12 at The Lerner Theatre, 410 S. Main St., in downtown Elkhart. Those auditioning are asked to attend only one audition date.

Premier Arts will be casting

for both adult and youth productions Performances will be May 6-8 at The Lerner Theatre with the all-youth production performance May 7.
