In this day and age, young people are navigating through hard times.

Stoltzfus got her master’s degree and Ph.D. from Cornell University.

Then she was hired to the faculty of the John Hopkins School of Public Health for 10 years. She served on the Cornell faculty for 15 years before coming to Goshen College as president in the fall of 2017.

Being a female executive, she recognizes her gender impacts her leadership. “Being a woman affects who I am and how people perceive me. It also affects how I lead. I’m highly consultative, gathering the information of multiple minds and perspectives to come up with the best decision or solution. But along with

“Young people are dealing with so many issues today. When I was in college, we pretty much trusted the way the world worked and our governmental leaders. We had confidence that after college we’d buy a house that would grow in value and probably be wealthier than our parents. That is not true today.

“Today’s young person is concerned about their future and their finances. They are also concerned about their safety. When students go to college, they’ve been taught what to do if there’s a school shooting; they’ve experienced the challenges of social media on their relationships and they’ve faced the realities of climate change, wildfires and floods.

The levels of anxiety and depression are great, with the pandemic adding to it.”

Besides these generational challenges, Stoltzfus wants the students at Goshen College to have faith and fun. “Life is still filled with endless possibilities.”

First of all, on the article called “Needs answers,” Indiana does not need new leadership.

We have good leadership and as far as I know they don’t mandate the shots here in Indiana.

It’s interesting, I have seen signs that read: “Don’t blame me, I voted for Trump.” This implies whatever Biden does is bad.

Saturday, Feb. 26. The event will be held in the Northern Indiana Event Center, formerly known as the RV Hall of Fame, 21565 Executive Drive in Elkhart.

Keynote speaker Joe Lamp’l, popular garden writer and host of the Emmy Award winning series “Growing a Greener World”

on PBS, will be speaking at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Lamp’l will talk about the five things smart gardeners do others do not, and the five biggest mistakes in gardens and landscapes and how to fix them.

In addition, two well-known Indiana gardeners will share their experiences. Steve Sass, will discuss spring ephemerals and Kate Friesen will advise on planting a cutting garden.

Mac joins the staff at NorthWood Middle School %\ /$85(1 =(8*1(5 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU NorthWood Middle School has a new support staff member. He’s still in training, currently coming into school Mondays and Fridays and the students have had fun watching him literally grow from week to week.

Mac is a 6-month-old yellow Labrador puppy who is training to be the school’s first facility therapy dog.

Wa-Nee Schools and the Nappanee Police Department have a memorandum of understanding to have two school resource officers in the schools. When SRO Skyler Garner first considered bringing a dog into NorthWood Middle School, he stumbled upon the idea of a facility therapy dog.

Garner explained as an SRO his job is to establish a relationship with the students. Mac’s job is to love and be loved.

“I want to help these kids to make their learning better, their socializing better … To have him here is amazing,” Garner said. And Mac certainly makes an impression.

Garner and Mac started to wander around the school during a passing period. They didn’t get 10 feet from the office door before Mac was surrounded by students, all petting him gently, while he doled out kisses, his tail a blur while it wagged.

In a classroom and during the passing period for lunch, Mac found himself in the middle of a group of students. He would calmly give each student some individual attention and a lick on the cheek, while they petted him or gave his ears a scratch.

Mac has even won over children who have said they are scared of dogs.

Mac came from Top Notch Service Dogs, based in Elkhart. Garner, explained he did a lot of research to find a service dog provider when he found Top Notch. “I looked at providers everywhere … It just so happened one of the best was around the corner.” Top Notch offers a year long program with the handler and dog. The service dog provider also trained facility therapy dogs for Jimtown Schools and a SRO from Middlebury Community Schools has come to meet Mac and see him in action.

Currently Mac comes to school with Garner Fridays and Mondays.

On Monday evenings he goes back to Top Notch for training Tuesdays through Thursdays. Mac’s training is focused on being in groups, being touched and being around children.

He also works on socialization, leash work and commands.

Garner noted a dog handler for a facility dog does not have to be an SRO. It could easily be the school guidance counselor or mental health professional.

Mac is so well trained, he naturally walks on Garner’s left side, or heels, without being told to. If Garner stops in the hallway to chat with students, Mac sits down.

Garner explained Mac has opened avenues of communication with the students. There have been kids who will share things with Mac they may not share with their peers or an adult.

Studies show facility therapy dogs seem to know who needs them the most.

“What I’ve seen here that’s really neat, we have some kids who never smile, but the second Mac walks into a room, they light up,” he said.

“He is very good at his job … They (the students) are no longer excited to see me.”

Mac has become so popular, “I have kids who ask to trade dogs, and they love their dogs,” Garner said.

“I’ve had kids who say Mac is their best friend.”

“It’s really awesome, to have the opportunity to have a dog in training here,” said Jake Everett, assistant principal at NorthWood Middle School. Everett said he appreciates having Mac as another faculty member to offer emotional support to both the kids and staff.

Everett came from the Whitko school district. At the time, it was considering introducing a facility dog.

One difference between a facility therapy dog and a service dog is a facility therapy dog is trained to work a longer day. Mac does serve all five schools in the Wa-Nee district. “He’s welcome in every building,” Garner said. And he has attended a NorthWood basketball game, where he was very popular with the students. Another difference is Mac will be able to work as long as he is healthy.

Mac is expected to complete his training by when school starts in August for the 2022-23 year. At that time, he’ll have his own school ID and Garner plans for him to have some kind of social media presence

NorthWood FFA strives to ‘live to serve’

NorthWood’s FFA chapter presents students with a planned schedule lasting through the end of the year, full of activities, competitions, conventions and auctions. The FFA chapter also worked on leadership skills.

The FFA chapter’s motto is “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live and Living to Serve.” This year there are 80 members in FFA. This includes a new chapter at NorthWood Middle School, a program starting last year.

The NorthWood FFA chapter also has a new advisor, Grace Allen, who took over for Amy Beer.

The co-advisor is Brandy Henderson.

FFA Week is Feb. 21-25. On Tuesday, Feb. 22, is the annual worker auction in conjunction with Polk Auctioneers.

“This is a big fundraiser for us.

We work with the buyers for four hours. Last year, we made $13,000,” said Paige Jacobs, president.

A homeroom and game day party is Wednesday, Feb. 23. There will be a milk chugging contest and a game. A teacher appreciation breakfast will also be served by FFA members.

Alumni game night is at 6 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 24, at the high school.

Tractor drive-in day is Friday, Feb. 25. Any FFA member or NorthWood student can drive a tractor to school. The members will also go bowling that night with a state officer, Nick Newman, attending.

“We are also doing teacher appreciation gifts the whole week,” said Jacobs. “This is to make teachers aware of the ag industry.”

The school year started off with the officers attending a retreat in

August in Bristol.

“We planned our year ahead. We played some games and did a scavenger hunt, too,” said Jacobs. “We had very open discussions, too.”

In September, the chapter helped maintain the community garden in Nappanee. The FFA chapter also attended a leadership development workshop in southern Indiana.

Last October, several members took part in a livestock skill-a-thon.

“We placed ninth in the state,” said Jacobs. “We had a team of four.”

Any student who takes an agriculture class is considered a member of FFA. The chapter has further been challenged for the last two months by COVID and other illnesses.

For the past several years, Fairfield’s FFA chapter has been in a building stage. For the past several years, only a handful of kids have been actively involved. Baum explained the chapter is trying to focus on the future by encouraging more members to be involved in leadership roles for the chapter and in competing.

Fairfield’s FFA chapter participates in crops judging, public speaking and is looking at developing a dairy judging team.

Bremen seeks input on the parks master plan During the last year, the Bremen Parks and Recreation Department has been working on updating its five-year park master plan and has prepared a draft and need your input once more. The draft plan provides a framework to guide the town’s parks department and parks board on the identified priorities to enhance Bremen’s parks and recreation amenities for the next five years.

Your input is strongly encouraged and is a vital component as this is another opportunity to learn about the plan and share your comments.

Bremen Parks and Recreation Department kicked off the planning process in May 2021 and has since sought residents input to ensure the updated plan reflects the needs and aspirations of Bremen’s residents.

The project steering committee issued two public input surveys during the planning process. The first survey inquired about what residents love about Bremen’s parks, what amenities they would like to see included in Bremen, and what opportunities they saw for improvement. Recently, the steering committee issued a second public input survey to hear residents’ support of the strategies they would like to see implemented in the next five years.

“We got lots of donations from local businesses. We distributed them (lunches) to three different grain elevators,” Jacobs stated.

Four FFA members took part in National Hippology Contest in Columbus, Ohio. The team placed ninth in the nation in two separate competitions.

On Jan. 20, NorthWood FFA’s officers’ team spent the day at the FFA Leadership Summit at Huntington. The students got to interact with others from different chapters and learn new leadership skills to bring back to the chapter.

“We had an hour of them bonding, and we learned to communicate with other chapters,” said Jacobs.

The teacher with the most votes will kiss the pig during Fairfield’s lunch periods. Baum said it will also be video and shown on social media. She also promised the pig will be a cute piglet.

Other FFA Week events include holding the chapter’s monthly meeting and then playing “Are you smarter than your ag teacher,” trivia game.

Baum said she’s been brushing up for this game.

The chapter is also planning on going to Culver’s dinner as a group since Culver’s is very supportive of FFA. Chapter members will be doing morning announcements and will have themed dress up days.

Elkhart Public Library Dunlap Branch’s renovation, part of EPL’s ongoing branch renovation project, will reopen Wednesday, Feb. 16.

The renovated location, serving Concord Township, is located at 58485 CR 13, Elkhart, and will open for browsing and curbside service at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16.

The second of the four branches to be renovated, Dunlap’s renovated building features inviting

Bethany Christian Schools hires elementary principal Bethany Christian Schools in Goshen announces the creation of a position to lead its newly expanded elementary school. Current Bethany sixth grade teacher Juanita Hershberger has accepted the position of elementary principal and will oversee this new section of the school, forming a comprehensive curriculum for its elementary program.

The school first began as a high school in 1954 and gradually added lower grades. For the past decade, Bethany has offered an exceptional education for students in grades 4-12. This year Bethany opened a third grade for the first time, and will open grades 1 and 2 this fall. Plans are underway to eventually add kindergarten as well.

“What’s happening at Bethany is wonderful, and we just want to be able to share that with more families and their young children,” said Head of School Tim Lehman. “We are so excited to expand the opportunities young children have here — to be known and loved, to grow at their own pace, and learn the skills that prepare them for life. These are valuable experiences we can offer our community’s children and it’s our privilege to do this work.”

Kallimani announces candidacy for Middlebury council at-large Beth Kallimani, a resident of Middlebury for 26 years, announced her candidacy for Middlebury Town Council in Elkhart County. She filed her paperwork Jan. 27 at the county courthouse and will run as a Democrat in the 2022 election for town council-atlarge.

“Throughout my life, I have seen what can be accomplished when all of us work together to find solutions for the challenges in our communities. I grew up learning from my parents how we benefit from the participation of each party and how that teaches us to work together,” said Kallimani. “I hope to help the town manager and council continue to attract another generation of families, while maintaining the unique qualities that our community and long-time residents have experienced over the years.”

Kallimani grew up in the city of Elkhart. She completed her bachelor’s degree in education from Ball State University, her master’s in education and a degree in educational leadership from Indi-

“We are delighted to see an experienced educator and active long-time community member become further involved in public service by running for elected office in Middlebury,” said Chad Crabtree, chair of the Elkhart County Democratic Party.

As an elementary educator in

the Baugo Community Schools, Kallimani taught several grade levels during the course of her 40 years at Jimtown Elementary.

She worked as the Title I reading interventionist, mentored high school cadet teachers, negotiated with the contractual bargaining team and is still the voice of the Jimtown Junior High track team.

She helped intermediate school students train for LEGO robotics and worked with the school administration and teachers association to develop and guide staff on the Baugo Community School Corporation’s teacher evaluation tool.

Kallimani is the mother of four grown children and nine grandchildren, several of whom attended Middlebury Community Schools. She has performed in children’s ministry productions at Brenneman Missionary Church and with Elkhart Civic Theater including, recently, “The Music Man.” She is a member of Open Table Mennonite Fellowship and is a founding member of the ACT Middlebury/Bristol Club.

Elkhart Civic Theatre announces open auditions Elkhart Civic Theatre will hold open auditions for the musical “Honky Tonk Laundry,” to be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 and 22 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, 411 W. Vistula St. in Bristol.

“Honky Tonk Laundry” is directed by Missey Domiano with assistant director Dolly Stephenson.

Performances will be held April 8, 9, 10, 15-16 at the Bristol Opera House.

Auditions will consist of readings from the script plus a singing audition. All auditioners should bring a full list of conflicts from Feb. 23-April 16.

For more than 50 years, Elkhart Civic Theatre has been providing high-quality theatrical performances from its home base at the historic Bristol Opera House in Bristol. The company does, however, enjoy the occasional road trip — usually to AACT competitions for community theatres around the country.
