%86+(/&5$)7 ('8&$7,21$/ )$50 launching internship program %\ /$85(1 =(8*1(5 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Bushelcraft Educational Farm, a non-profit located next door to South Gate on CR 26 in Elkhart, recently announced it has received a $10,000 grant to assist with piloting a January to May 2022 internship program from the Community Foundation of Elkhart County. Bushelcraft Farm, which registered in 2020 and received its non-profit status in 2021, is set up to offer classes in various gardening topics as well as growing food, largely used for community sustainable agriculture or donated. CSAs are where individuals provide financial support to a farm and receive a portion of the harvest in return. “We’ve increasingly been working on getting people outside on the land,” said Jon Zirkle, executive director of Bushelcraft Farm. Bushelcraft was co-founded by Zirkle and Stacey Holland. “It’s really Stacey’s idea and I think we wanted to engage people on the land,” Zirkle said in a phone interview. Both thought the area around South Gate was a great location for their endeavor. “Both of us were passionate about growing our own food and crafting, DYI type skills,” Zirkle said. When the pandemic hit, Holland stepped aside to focus on home schooling her children. At press time, Zirkle already had several applications for the pilot internship program. In this new program, interns will be spending from midJanuary to late May doing hands-on work, preparing beds for planting, learning how to prepare the soil and how to use cover crops.
