%86+(/&5$)7 ('8&$7,21$/ )$50 launching internship program %\ /$85(1 =(8*1(5 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Bushelcraft Educational Farm, a non-profit located next door to South Gate on CR 26 in Elkhart, recently announced it has received a $10,000 grant to assist with piloting a January to May 2022 internship program from the Community Foundation of Elkhart County.

Bushelcraft Farm, which registered in 2020 and received its non-profit status in 2021, is set up to offer classes in various gardening topics as well as growing food, largely used for community sustainable agriculture or donated. CSAs are where individuals provide financial support to a farm and receive a portion of the harvest in return.

“We’ve increasingly been working on getting people outside on the land,” said Jon Zirkle, executive director of Bushelcraft Farm.

Bushelcraft was co-founded by Zirkle and Stacey Holland. “It’s really Stacey’s idea and I think we wanted to engage people on the land,” Zirkle said in a phone interview. Both thought the area around South Gate was a great location for their endeavor. “Both of us were passionate about growing our own food and crafting, DYI type skills,” Zirkle said.

When the pandemic hit, Holland stepped aside to focus on home schooling her children.

At press time, Zirkle already had several applications for the pilot internship program. In this new program, interns will be spending from midJanuary to late May doing hands-on work, preparing beds for planting, learning how to prepare the soil and how to use cover crops.

My passion has been directing choirs, no matter what the size. And my experience dates to my high school days, when I was asked to lead my

church choir.”

Rohrer graduated from Olivet Nazarene University with a music education degree. “My plans were to teach high school vocal music.

After graduation in 1973, I took a teaching position at Hanover Central High School in Cedar Lake, Indiana. I was offered some church positions, but I wanted to teach. I did do church music part time for $30 a week, though.” Rohrer found teaching very challenging, espe-

Rohrer’s fiance was still in college when he graduated. “Donna was a year behind me. My roommate was dating Donna’s roommate and we became good friends as a result. We started dating in October 1969. By January 1970, though not formally engaged, we knew we would be married.”

The Rohrers were married in June 1974, after Donna’s graduation. “We moved to Nappanee in 1977. I’m from Nappanee and wanted to live close to family.”

By 1978, the Rohrers had two daughters. “My home church was Goshen Church of the Nazarene.

But Donna and I decided we needed to find a church closer to home for the sake of our girls.” In March 1982, the Rohrer family began attending Nappanee Missionary Church.

Rohrer began as a volunteer at NMC. “Donna and I sang together often. I worked with an octet.

Then a year later, I began leading the choir as a volunteer. By 1985, I was part time staff and a year and a half later, I came on as the full-time music minister, leading worship as well as the choir.”

When Rohrer began, the choir was of modest size. “I remember ordering 25 copies of sheet music for our choir members. The choir grew with the church.” Rohrer was worship leader at NMC for 27 years and choir director for 32 years.

However, we were more than a choral group. We prayed for one another and were active socially. We had a yearly bus trip. I remember one year we all bussed to Indianapolis for a Gaither Homecoming concert.

We shared our lives together.”

Rohrer has always had other church responsibilities in addition to leading music. Though no longer music director, he is still an active staff member. He has managed the church’s missions program for the past 25 years. “It is a privilege to be able to watch God do amazing things around the globe.”

The Rohrers’ daughters are grown and married. Don and Donna have four grandchildren.

“We love hosting them all for family dinners or vacations. My prayer is to have the privilege to instill some wisdom into the lives of my grandkids as we share good times together.”

Free gardening classes begin The Seed to Feed program at Church Community Services will be offering a series of free, one-hour community classes about different gardening topics in 2022. A different topic will be discussed each month by staff or local experts.

The first three topics are: microgreens, Jan. 24; the basics of hydroponics, Feb. 17; and how to start seeds, March 14. “These short classes are intended to empower community members to be able to grow their own food at home and we will offer resources to those interested in doing such,” said Abby Utterback, the garden education coordinator at Church Community Services.

The classes are appropriate for beginners and will be held at Church Community Services in the Seed to Feed Greenhouse at 907 Oakland Ave., Elkhart. Community members are invited to attend as many as they like. To learn more, visit: www.churchcommunityservices.org/stfclasses.

How many people would have survived the long hours stranded in their cars and trucks on Interstate 95 in Virginia that miserable night if all the vehicles were battery powered? One more reason to keep cars and trucks that run on gasoline.

The Marxists Democrat Party is perpetrating a classic psychological manipulation tactic on this country by calling the conservative protest of the stolen election “The Big Lie,” whereas the big lie is actually them denying what they did with their fraudulent election rigging.

Anyone with psychology training will recognize this as “gaslighting.” This behavior has to be called out if we are going to save our republic as enshrined in the Constitution. The liberals are using the term “Saving Our Democracy” but their definition of democracy is actually referring to their perverted and corrupted form of totalitarianism they want to impose on us all.

Go to wnd.com and read the article, “Schumer’s Ugly Voting Rights Bill” by David Harsanyi, posted Jan. 6 to get an idea of what’s coming.

Wasteful spending.

In a local newspaper, front page, was the article on the proposed ice rink and pavilion. This idea was created in 2020 but was canceled due to the pandemic and the shaky economy. Now it’s on the table again with a different location, the east side of Goshen College.

This whole project is so absurd. It’s a want, not a need. The millions of dollars it would take to build this disaster could be used to better advantage by completing much needed road and street work in Goshen. They’re in bad shape. This ice rink pavilion project would be a horrible mistake. I hope our city fathers will realize this.

To begin with, Trump is not “fighting” to “keep the evidence” out of the Jan. 6 sham. He was asking his tax records would not be made public. Big difference.

They are going after these people who had the Jan. 6 riot and arresting them and going to make them pay.

I think they should do that with the riots and stuff that goes on in cities too where they damage the cities and properties and get in and steal and riot. I think the people ought to be rounded up and fined heavily and maybe even be made to help clean up the mess but not to rebuild because they might not do the building right and stuff to be problems down the road.

First, how could Trump call off the Antifa and BLM members who participated in and were ring leaders in entering the Capitol, especially when he had nothing to do with it in the first place? Next fact, Trump signed the order calling up the National Guard to the Capitol several days ahead of time, but the order was denied by Nancy Pelosi, so therefore no military was there to stop it.

Yes, the FBI released a report that proved Trump did nothing; yes, the cops moved the barrier, on video; and yes, it is a fact the sergeant-in-arms requested six times for the National Guard and six times Pelosi denied him.

You are wrong, period.

In the Dec. 21 edition of Speak Out there was a column entitled, “In deep trouble.”

According to this person the activist judges were keeping the people from hearing evidence about voter fraud and all that stuff. Trouble is, a good many of those so-called activist judges were appointed by Trump himself. For example two cases made it all the way to the Supreme Court and the first one was voted down 7 to 2. The second one was voted down 9 to nothing with all three of Trump’s appointees voting against him.

Application deadline for teacher scholarship and stipends Students in high school or college who are planning to teach or work in school administration in the State of Indiana have until Jan. 31 to apply for one scholarship and two teaching stipends.

Indiana Commission for Higher Education is encouraging students to act quickly, as there is limited funding available. All three financial aid opportunities can be applied for at ScholarTrack.IN.gov.

“Educators play a pivotal role in preparing students for higher education and the workforce,” said Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers. “The commission is pleased to provide these financial aid opportunities to fund future educators’ higher education and build Indiana’s teacher pipeline.”

Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship: The Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship provides 200 high-achieving high school and college students interested in pursuing a career in education

the opportunity to earn a renewable scholarship of up to $7,500 each year during up to four academic years. In exchange, students agree to teach for five years at an eligible Indiana school or repay the corresponding, prorated amount of the scholarship. Earline S. The maximum amount a student may receive is up to $4,000. Priority will be given to student teaching applicants.

“We’re trying to give them a snapshot that agriculture is year round,” Zirkle said. As an example, he explained the winter time is when farmers do their record keeping, plan for the spring and order seeds.

The interns will also be helping design and later teach educational classes at Bushelcraft.

Zirkle said most of the applicants who come in are students who do not have an agriculture background, where they grew up on the farm. Some have taken agriculture classes where they had

an “aha” moment.

The interns will have opportunities to earn credit for hands-on learning and gain job skills while also receiving pay. The deadline for applying for the internship program was Friday, Jan. 14, however Zirkle said they would consider taking late applications for the program.

Bushelcraft Farm grows vegetables on about an acre of land while it grows cover crops on an additional 8 acres. The farm has access to 14 acres total. Last year the farm grew about 60 different vegetables and herbs including tomatoes, okra, zucchini and kale and collard greens.

“That’s part of the educational edge,” Zirkle said. “We grow a lot of heirloom varieties.” The farm also grows a vegetables some peo-

ple may not have seen before such as tomatillo and ground cherry.

Zirkle explained the Amish may be more familiar with ground cherry or husk berry as they use it to make pie and jam.

The farm also grows sunflowers which Zirkle said is great for the soil, and heritage corn including some Native American varieties.

“We really try to empower people to be resourceful at home supplying their own food needs,” said Zirkle. “We’re trying to get people to be curious and try something themselves.”

Goshen Health offers EMT training Enrollment is open for emergency medical technician classes offered by the Goshen Health Education Department. The five-month course introduces students to basic skills and knowledge needed for EMT certification.

Students receive instruction on emergency medical services, including trauma, medical assessment and resuscitation.

Classes begin Monday, Feb. 7, and continue through July 6. Students must have access to the internet as there will be both online and classroom learning.

be at least 18 years. Class size is limited to 20 students. Tuition costs $900 per student.

Students are not required to be vaccinated for COVID-19, but it is highly recommended. Keep in mind it could possibly become a requirement in the future.

EMTs provide emergency medical care outside the hospital for people of all ages. They also transport patients with life-threatening emergencies and those in need of non-emergency care or routine medical transportation.

Clerk reminds residents of absentee voting options Elkhart County Clerk of the Circuit Court, Christopher Anderson, would like to remind Elkhart County voters although the 2022 Primary Election will be held May 3, there are multiple options for those who would like to vote absentee before Election Day. No-excuse in-person absentee voting will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 5. Voters should watch the newspaper for an official announcement including all details for in-person absentee voting. The election board will also be mailing a post-card to every residential address in Elkhart County in the next several weeks with details about voting absentee in person.

Voters can also vote absentee by mail, if they qualify. Qualifying reasons to vote absentee by mail are: • Expecting to be out of town Election Day; • Expecting to be confined on Election Day due to illness or injury; • Expecting to be caring for a confined person Election Day; • If a person is a voter with disabilities;* • If a voter is at least 65 years of age; • If a voter will have official election duties outside their voting precinct;

• If a voter is scheduled to work the entire 12 hours the polls are open Election Day; • If a voter is unable to vote on Election Day due to observance of a religious discipline or religious holiday the entire 12 hours the polls are open; • If a voter is a member of the military or is a public safety officer. *An absentee voter who is unable to mark their own ballot or sign the ballot security envelope must vote by travel board.

The deadline for the election board to receive an application to vote absentee by mail is 11:59 p.m. Thursday, April 21. Remember, the earlier the application is received, the more successful the process will be.

Once the application is received and approved, the election board will make contact with the voter to schedule a date and time a bipartisan absentee travel board can visit the voter to assist them with casting their ballot. Absentee voting by traveling board begins Thursday, April 14.

Hoffer named Interra’s business development officer Interra Credit Union’s Heidi Hoffer joins the treasury management team as the business development officer, stated Jason Dewart, vice president of treasury management for Interra. Beacon Health and Ivy Tech collaborate Beacon Health System and Ivy Tech Community College are collaborating on an innovative program designed to attract, educate and train nurses who will remain in area communities to care for patients locally. This new model will offer educational incentives to increase student enrollment and develop a robust pipeline of nurses to work in local health care.

The collaboration will establish the new Beacon Health System School of Nursing at Ivy Tech.

Starting in fall 2022, nursing students will have the opportunity to become part of the Beacon Scholars Program. As Beacon Scholars, students will have the cost of their Ivy Tech education, including books, covered by Beacon Health. Beacon Health will provide these students with a living stipend and future employment as a Beacon Health nurse.

Beacon Health’s commitment also includes providing new nurs-

ing faculty resources through current Beacon nurses and making additional investments in facility improvements at Ivy Tech to better prepare students for the clinical environment. The Beacon Scholars Program will help address the nursing shortage in this region by graduating more trained clinical staff who desire to remain in the community in which they are educated.

“This program expands the way we think about health — beyond the walls of our hospitals and doctors’ offices. Health starts in our families, schools and workplaces,” said Kreg Gruber, executive officer at Beacon Health System.

“Ivy Tech Community College has a great track record of educating individuals who otherwise wouldn’t have an opportunity to enter higher education and who are first-generation students.

Leap Program reaching students This past fall, THOR Industries, the world’s largest RV manufacturer, partnered with schools across Elkhart County to educate more than 2,900 students in fifth and eighth grades about the RV industry and equip students for future employment opportunities.

THOR’s LEAP (learn, engage, achieve, perform) program is a curriculum designed to capture students’ interest in the RV industry and provide an initial look into RV-related career paths.

Since launching in 2017, THOR’s LEAP program has grown exponentially with nearly 13,500 students completing the program across all seven public school districts in Elkhart County. The program is on pace to reach nearly 5,800 students during the 2021-22 school year.

“The LEAP program is focused on investing in our community’s future,” shared Bob Martin, THOR president and CEO. “It seeks to generate a genuine interest in and appreciation for our industry among students, provide tangible job skills and allow students to experience the adventure RVs offer.”

Along with providing a fun learn-

ing experience, the LEAP program also aids local school districts with fulfilling Indiana’s educational requirements of applied learning and real-world experience. With two unique courses, fifth and eighth grade students are presented a differentiated immersive educational experience. Fifth grade students have the opportunity to tour all types of motorized and towable RVs, as well as learn about the RV industry and THOR’s role in the community.

While eighth grade students, who are beginning to explore career opportunities, are assigned projects which introduce problem solving techniques, promote team building, and are advised how these transferable skills relate to various career opportunities which exist in the RV industry.

“Raising awareness of the RV industry and career pathways through our hands-on interactive program is a fantastic way to continue to build THOR’s relationship in the greater Elkhart area,” shared Rick Schutt, THOR’s director of community development. “It’s been very rewarding building a program which is extremely popular with students, teachers and administrators.”

State funded free testing sites out of rapid antigen tests Elkhart County Health Department was recently informed the Indiana Department of Health has depleted its inventory of rapid antigen COVID-19 tests and does not expect any additional deliveries for the foreseeable future due to a national shortage. Therefore, the state funded free COVID-19 testing sites are completely out of RAPID antigen COVID-19 tests.

Residents can attempt to secure rapid testing through a private provider, such as a pharmacy, primary care provider, or any of the other sites listed at the top of the Elkhart County Health Department’s Facebook page.

Residents can also attempt to purchase OTC rapid test kits from area retailers (if available).

Residents are asked they do not go to emergency departments for the sole purpose of getting

tested for COVID-19.

State funded free testing sites have plenty of PCR tests, which results can take up to five to seven days. There are no restrictions to receive a PCR test.

Looking for the signs of spring 2022 It’s the new year OUTDOOR NOTES 2022. Winter is passing; has passed; it’s a new year, 2022.

Days are getting longer. But the change in day length is only a

By Neil Case few minutes per day, not enough to be noticeable. Days aren’t any warmer. There’s snow on the ground, frequent flurries in the air, and ice in our driveway.

I’m looking for signs of winter passing, signs of spring. I expect to see the first signs at my bird feeders. As I sit at the window by the dining room or at my computer, eating, writing, I watch the birds at the feeders outside, looking for birds of spring, a species I haven’t seen this year.

But the only birds are the same species as I’ve seen been seeing all winter. They’re probably the same birds that I’ve seen and been seeing all winter. There are house sparrows, black-capped chickadees, white-breasted nuthatches, and tufted titmice, blue jays, cardinals, downy woodpeckers, one red-bellied woodpecker, dark-eyed juncos, and goldfinches. I’ve seen a hairy woodpecker, twice, at the suet feeder outside the dining room window.

I’m watching the bushes and trees around the feeders too and the ground, looking for robins and mourning doves and other spring arrivals. I’m looking for song sparrows, and chipping sparrows and house wrens. When I go outside, and when I go the barn, I’m watching for barn swallows and when I go out in the pasture, I

look over the marsh, watching for tree swallows, and red-winged blackbirds, a great blue heron and ducks and geese, when the pond isn’t ice covered.

When I go driving and I’m not hurrying to meet somebody, to an appointment, I drive county roads, frequently gravel roads.

There I usually see crows, turkey vultures, kestrels and a redtailed hawk. Occasionally this year, I’ve seen a killdeer and a meadowlark. By a stream recently, my daughter, who was riding with me, spotted a belted kingfisher and pointed it out to me. It’s early, barely into the new year, but I’m looking for birds that are signs of spring.

I’m looking for signs of spring other than birds, too. Grass in the lawn turning green, for example. Clovers turning green and blooming. I stop and search for a four-leafed clover now and then not because it’s a sign of spring, which it is, but because finding a four-leaf clover is a sign of good luck.

I watch for other animals when I’m driving, too, of course. Squirrels, both fox and gray, have been coming to my bird feeders all winter and occasionally there’s been a chipmunk. Now, I’m watching for a raccoon, at one of my feeders or along a road as I’m driving or riding with someone else. I’m seeing coons, almost all dead in or alongside the road.

I see deer at all times of the year, but now I’m watching for does with spindly-legged fawns.

I’m looking for woodchucks, groundhogs, though groundhogs aren’t expected until March and it’s a month and a half until March and Groundhog Day. It’s just into 2022, the New Year, yet I’m already looking for signs of spring.

Elkhart County Historical Museum will be hosting Friday Night at the Museum event from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21. There is no admission fee for the event, and all ages are welcome.

Friday Night at the Museum is a family fun event that will have the entire museum open for viewing, including the award winning “Crossroads of Elkhart County” experience. The three exhibits that make up Crossroads present the history of Elkhart County from the arrival of people during the Paleo period up to today.

Excel Center now accepting enrollment applications The Excel Center, a free public high school for adults, is currently accepting enrollment applications for term four of the 2021-22 school year. Classes begin Feb. 7 in Elkhart.

Applications are accepted at any time throughout each term and new students are integrated into the schedule.

Middlebury Elementary Court News Circuit Court donates to food pantry During the month of December students at Middlebury Elementary School collected food items which were donated to the Middlebury Food Pantry.

Students walked to First Mennonite Church where the food pantry used to be located. There representatives of the food pantry were on hand with a truck to accept the donation.

This year each classroom competed within their grade level to collect the most items. The classroom that collected the most in each grade level, their teacher dressed up as a character.

The Governor’s STEM Team program will recognize the top high school STEM students in the state with consideration for coursework, extracurricular activities, work/ research projects, leadership roles and community service.

Yoder promoted to vice president Jon Yoder was recently promoted to vice president of Goshen P h y s i c i a n s.

Yoder started as a physician practice manager at Goshen Phy-21 <2'(5 sicians, then moved to a director position before being promoted to vice president in December.

“In Jon’s nine years with Goshen Health, he has demonstrated the vision and leadership skills needed to help our organization continue to successfully grow. His commitment to process improvement and living out our values of compassion and excellence are an inspiration,” said Randy Christophel, Goshen Health president and CEO. “I look forward to the accomplishments he will help bring about in his new role.”

Yoder holds a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and an MBA from the University of Phoenix, with an emphasis on health care administration.

Merry Lea’s regional seed swap postponed Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College’s fourth annual Michiana Regional Seed Swap has been postponed to Saturday, Feb. 19, to ensure participants can attend safely in person.

Michiana residents can connect with fellow gardeners and plant enthusiasts at this networking and educational event to exchange and learn about seeds. Participants can trade or acquire seeds, learn about seed saving techniques and gardening practices, browse resource tables and vendors and meet with other gardeners.

This is a free event open to the public, and will maintain the same program location, format and times on the new date. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 19, at Goshen College Church Chapel, 1700 S. Main St. The decision to postpone was made because of concerns around the Omicron variant, caseloads in

the region and the potential to become a high-transmission event.

The Merry Lea team understands this may be disappointing, but is hopeful and excited to continued this event in person while serving the broader public health of the communities.

Everyone is welcome, from firsttime gardeners to experienced growers, including children and families. Participants will include home gardeners, community gardening, organizers, small-scale growers and those interested in local food systems.

“A seed swap supports the biodiversity of crops grown in our region. Exchanging seeds helps us to create a ‘living seed bank’ of vegetables, grains, flowers and herbs that are regionally adapted to our area,” said John Sherck, a local seed grower and swap contributor.

Topics will vary, but among the speakers will be Dani Tippman, a Myaamia Native American descended from Takumwah and Chief Richardville, and a citizen of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. Tippman will explore seed rematriation by discussing Myaamia planting practices and relationships with plants and food through traditional and historical Myaamia stories.

Participants are welcome to stay for the entire duration of Saturday’s events or drop in. Herb, vegetable and flower seeds will be available through sales, trades and for free thanks to generous donations.

Participants are not required to bring seeds to the event and but are encouraged to do so if they have them.

Merry Lea cares about the safety of guests and staff, and seeks to protect its youngest learners. In following Goshen College policy they ask all participants, including children ages 3 and older, to join Merry Lea in wearing face masks for the duration of the event.

Boys & Girls Clubs member using voice to share her passion When you hear Chyniah Woods sing, you might be surprised to learn she’s only a junior in high school.

A member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County’s Elkhart Teen Club, Woods has a voice that has a richness beyond her years. But she may come by it naturally. Woods comes from a musical family — both of her parents are involved in music.

“Her mom is a singer and her dad is a gifted music producer and DJ. She carries all that talent,” said Quenton Williams, the teen club’s media and performing arts supervisor. “When I started interacting with her, I saw her natural, raw ability to sing.”

Woods has been working on recording a cover song for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Conference Talent Search, which she has submitted. At press time, Woods received word, she has moved on to the semi-finalist round for consideration to perform as part of the 2022 Boys & Girls Club of American National Conference which will be held in May. word. Woods recorded “My Future” by Billie Eilish. She’s not intimidated by the thought of potential national exposure.

“I’m not scared. I’m just excited because if I do good, I know the opportunities that come with it. If I don’t make it this time, I’ll try again next year,” Woods said.

This is the second time she’s entered the competition. While she’s singing a song written by someone else this time, she’s also started writing her won music. Woods said she’s never sure where inspiration will appear.

“When it comes, it comes. I could be washing the dishes and I think of something. Boom, the lyrics and melody just pop in my head.”

She said that’s where the song she is working on now came to her. As for her motivation to create and perform, Woods said she is always trying to push herself to try new things.

“You are your biggest critic.

Coming from a musical family I have high expectations. From my point of view, when I feel like I need to get out of my comfort zone. So when things like this come up, it’s me trying to push myself.
