Manager of Art This Way and entrepreneur Alexandra Hall has transformed her love of art into a career AND a way to revitalize a community and stimulate economic growth. She has developed, facilitated, and executed more than one hundred public art and placemaking projects in rural and urban settings and has plans to do even more.

“Today it is easy to find a piece of public art in downtown Fort Wayne, but that was not so just a few years ago,” Hall remembered. The murals of Jerrod and Kara Tobias, murals at Wunderkammer, the Nosego installation at Pint and Slice facilitated by Josef Zimmerman, and countless others helped set the foundation for a program like Art This Way to exist. It took many more hours, research, and hard work to build a functioning public art program for the Fort Wayne Downtown Improvement District. “I built Art This Way to advocate for public art and create opportunities for local artists to share their talent with the community,” Hall explained, “Since its beginning, I have facilitated the program, raised funds, advocated for the arts, and managed each project.” Combining artwork with strategy and intention, Art This Way has linked key zones of activity in Fort Wayne and brought culture and art into the heart of downtown. Artwork encourages visitors to engage with the artwork and walk rather than drive through downtown. “Whether it is installing a mural on an ugly facade, or adding a light sculpture to an alley, the injection of public art into the region is promoting us as a forward-thinking and creative place with a high quality of life,” Hall informed. Enriching the community in this way attracts new college grads, corporations, and families to our region. “We are instilling a positive impression of who we are and building a stronger community.” Hall expressed deep appreciation for all the champion organizations that understand the value and unquantifiable ripple effect of public art. She hopes to continue working with them to provide beautiful public art for the citizens of Fort Wayne and the surrounding region. “I’d like to see Art This Way continue to reimagine public spaces, redefine public areas, and build a better, more walkable city,” she said. “Quality of life helps us market this region, and public art is one piece of the puzzle in the effort to be competitive, grow, and build a more robust economy.” a
