Reader DIY: Kelly’s Family Room

Every month, we highlight do-it-yourself projects from our readers. Do you want to see your project featured in our magazine? Email ambouthot@the-papers.com. Kelly’s Family Room After This month’s Reader DIY project comes from Kelly O’Banion. She and her husband, Tim, recently remodeled their outdated family room.

What was your inspiration for the project?

Our family room was our least liked room. It was dark in there with brown shag carpet and dark wood paneling. It just felt dated. We knew it was time for a big update. We changed it from a primitive style to a modern farmhouse look. My husband removed the paneling, and painted the doors, fireplace, walls, and ceiling white. He put up new blinds, door hardware, chair rails, and flooring. We did have an electrician come in for the recessed lighting part.

How long did it take from start to finish?

It took three weeks even with his full-time job.

What was the total cost of the project?

$6,000 for the entire room, ceiling to floor with furniture and home decor.

What did you like best about the undertaking?

Knowing how much brighter and refreshed the room would look, and now it’s one of our favorite rooms. It has a cottage feel and looks adorable in person. We have gotten many compliments.

What was the most challenging aspect?

The most challenging is that he painted the wall and hearth a few times. We kept changing our minds about whether it should be gray or white. He even painted the hearth gray and back to white.

Where did you source the materials?

Lowes, Hobby Lobby, Canvas Prints and Comforts of Home for furniture and decor. a
