Thanksgiving will be here faster than you can say, “pass the stuffing.” That said, now’s the time to start planning a menu and setting yourself up for successful entertaining at home — literally. Here’s how to execute on a Thanksgiving meal people will be talking about for months.

A scrumptious meal is definitely enhanced by its tablescape presentation and the overall atmosphere. The goal is to create a cozy and inviting look yet one that allows you to accommodate all your guests. Long tables or farm tables will accommodate a small group and allow for conversation. From here, you’ll want to make sure you have adequate seating. You might want the look of a rustic metal chair or a cross-back chair to provide some contrast from the standard folding chair scenario. Then be sure to choose table linens that work for the intended vibe.
Next, it’s time to hone in on the details. Wow them with a high-class setting of china, flatware, and glassware. If you prefer an edgier look, consider eclectic. With this goal in mind, mix and match the patterns between the salad and dinner plates and even the appetizer/dessert plates. As far as flatware goes, you’ll want to be consistent with your motif. For example, if you go with a goldleafed plate, you’ll want to go for gold flatware and likewise with silver or even copper flatware. And finally, the options for glassware range from timeless to more modern. At the minimum, you’ll want to have specific glasses for water, wine, and champagne.
In general, experts suggest you match the presentation to your home’s personality and the guest list. For example, if your invitees are mostly close family, you might not feel the need to up the ante. However, if you are entertaining neighbors or new friends, you might want to think bigger.
At the same time, don’t be afraid to challenge tradition. That means getting creative with colors and table décor. There’s no set rule that you must use colors of fall in a Thanksgiving spread. Don’t be afraid to express your personal style and preferences. If you’re in need of inspiration, think about the things for which you are thankful and let that guide your pursuit. There’s no right or wrong way!
Last, don’t forget to ask for help if and when you need it. There’s nothing wrong with calling in a caterer to take some of the pressure off. After all, a proper Thanksgiving meal calls for hours of preparation and culinary chops. It’s no small feat, especially for amateur cooks. If you’d rather not bother with it, give yourself permission to call in the pros. Imagine all the time you’ll have to truly enjoy the company of your guests without having to worry about whether the turkey comes out like your mother’s. What is your time truly worth?
When in doubt, remember that this is intended to be a season for gratitude. The food and drink are secondary to the sentiments.
