Sunny summer is here so let ’s celebrate all that ’s fresh, while we refresh! From summer sweets ‘n eats to patriotic celebrations to learning the habits to happiness, the July issue of glo will be jampacked with great, inspirational information!

Too, with July ’s gorgeous weather, lace up the sneakers or slide on those flip-flops to best embrace some fresh-air fun, glo-st yle!

Count on this (and so much more!), coming soon in glo’s July issue.

From the executive editor

glo

It’s time to shine some girl power.

It ’s great to be competitive It ’s how we continually strive to improve and grow And I can think of nothing worse than stagnation of mind and spirit so yes, a competitive drive can be a super shiny, great and awesome thing. To a point.

Competition can become unhealthy if the root behind the effor ts isn’t honorable or kind So, let ’s all strive to shine our collaborative chick power As women, let ’s encourage one another Let ’s embrace one another ’s differences and perhaps even learn from them Let ’s shine as individuals for who and what we are

And then? Our collaborative goodness and positive spirit can move mountains

Let’s try it, whaddya’ say?

That ’s the essence of the issue within your hands From women standing strong in their own convictions and innate goodness to learning the common habits of successful go-getters, we’ve packed this issue with useful guidance and inspiration to make your hear t and drive g l o .

Find summer fun tips to embrace the adventurous, joyous spirit within and read advice to keep that energized spirit and good health vibrant through our senior years Age is just a number, ladies

Find great recipes and rediscover some bare beauty tips by writer Shannon Rooney (who has written for me for YEARS she’s a fabulous writer and I’m so appreciative for her and all my writer teams over the years)

And this June, let ’s celebrate summer sunshine and the first loves in most of our lives Yes, our dads My dad had a stern toughness about him, but the tenderness within his hear t and the humor in his laugh melted his edge in my memor y Your dad may be like that, too From bad jokes to pranks to never-ending concern and protection, dads are like no other Tell your dad you love him Say you appreciate his effor ts or simply find place in your hear t to forgive if that ’s the case Days are long but life is shor t; embrace the goodness

And now I say farewell to For t Wayne g l o will be in great hands, so please keep on g l o -ing and I hope to see some of you on my new online platform from Idaho, www InSuesShoes com

May God bless you… and I sign off with warmest wishes and deepest appreciation,

Bare Beauty Tips

Embrace a Natural Look this Spring

A S olid Foundation

First things first Since your face is your canvas, selec t a foundation that works with your coloring and note that it may change slightly with the season and sun exposure “In order to selec t the most accurate foundation shade, you will want to match it to your chest, ” said Amy Dray, makeup ar tist and owner of Blush Me “Don't be hesitant to buy two shades if you can't find a per fec t match.”

Wrinkle-be-gone!

Dermal fillers can give your sk in a boost without the need for painful plastic surger y “A lot of people like to have their cheeks filled or lips filled with our Restylane fillers, ” said Lynn Blanchard, manager at Belle Sante Med Spa. “ They are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occuring substance in the sk in So it gives you natural-look ing results by smoothing facial wrink les and folds ”

Healthy Glow

If you’d like a natural glow even after your foundation has been applied, Dray suggested using REN Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic “ This is

Spring is the per fec t time to add some natural elements to your beaut y routine Stores are freshening up their produc ts and displays, and the focus is on embracing your own natural beaut y. We’ve got seven great tips from local exper ts who share how to take your look into spring with a fresh new approach.

a toner that is applied before you apply your face moisturizer and foundation and will give your face a subtle natural glow throughout the day.”

Smooth It Out

For a natural look, Dray recommended two shades of concealer. “One shade will be the shade that matches your foundation so you can better conceal any blemishes or age spots, and your second concealer shade will be for your under-eyes ” Use 1-2 shades lighter than your foundation under the eyes as this will help to brighten the area and cover up any dark ness

Luscious

Lip Color

For a natural look ing lip color, stick to the same color family as your sk in tone, said Britney Kleinhans, cosmetologist at Southwest Hair & Day Spa “If you have a warm sk in tone then you will look great in corals, reds and peaches If you have a cool sk in tone you will look great in rosy pinks and berries This being said, all lip colors are in right now so step outside the box and tr y something new You never k now how it will look on until you tr y it ”

Treat Your Skin

Healthy sk in is the basis for natural beauty Blanchard recommended iS Clinical produc ts, which use ingredients like K ak adu plum ex trac t and L-ascorbic acid, for improving sk in health. “ They ’re formulated without parabens, folates and fragrances and other chemicals that cause irritation. They ’re all anti-aging and they stimulate elastin and collagen and firm and tighten sk in, ” said Blanchard

Natural Nails

For a natural look at your finger tips, Kleinhans suggested a classic French manicure or simple nude polishes. Nail care is impor tant too. “ The best way to keep nails healthy is to keep them moisturized Daily use of a cuticle oil, like CND Solar Oil, will help keep nails strong and flexible, ” said Kleinhans a

Sue

Executive Editor, glo Publisher, InS uesShoes.com

“Where there’s genuine kindness, there’s goodness And where there’s goodness, joy flawlessly spreads like sunshine ”

Such is the mantra that fuels Sue, a Chicago native guided by what seems to be an over flowing bucket of gratefulness and goodness and it ’s not resultant of an easy road traveled

Consistently on a quest to learn and self-improve, Sue’s experiences are vast and varied From private vocal training, per forming onstage in musicals and dance, and even seek ing fluenc y in a second language, Sue views the world through the inquisitive drive of a woman who’s been both celebrated and scarred She’s fallen during painful loss and abuse and in her words, at one point in her life, she “could smell fear.” Add her battles with sk in cancers and her effor ts to raise and protec t her two children as a full-time single mother and be a face of optimism and strength within two monthly regional magazines, and we’d say she’s a pretty tough cook ie

And did we mention that she’s an award-winning writer? Learning to express and enter tain through the written word, and at the encouragement of her father, Sue began her journey in publishing at the young age of 10, when she was first recognized for her written creations Various awards later, Sue earned her bachelor ’s degree in English from Eastern Illinois University and now having published over a thousand ar ticles, essays, columns (and more), Sue has also managed in their entirety hundreds of magazines under more than a half-dozen titles in three different states

Sue has ex tended an eager helping hand to more than a dozen area non-profits, both in ser vice hours and gracious promotion through publishing She has managed and helped grow teams of professional writers She’s spoken as guest speaker to various writer groups, par ticipated as a judge in writing contests, she’s been member of national writer organizations, professional women’s groups and more And now, after her depar ture from g l o and move to Idaho with her husband (they were recently married!), she’s embark ing on her own venture for readers: www.InSuesShoes.com, a platform for both positivity and belonging. Readers may interac t, share photos and simply enjoy the journey, walk ing in the various shoes “we all must wear as we traipse through life, ” she said

Too, Sue recently launched a projec t with her long-time pal, Coach Kevin Donley. Sue co-founded www.CoachKevinDonley.com, a company created to offer leadership training to business executives and anyone seek ing life sk ills to excel like a champion

“Life has been a cur vy, broken road blasted with more potholes than Allen County, ” Sue said, “but with faith as my foundation, I now can look fear in the eye, wink and say, ‘bring it!’ I’m appreciative for life’s past ‘downs’ as much as the ‘ups’; it ’s how we profoundly grow ’”

And appreciative she is. “I’d like to thank readers for the past 20 years… their encouragement and k ind words have been my fuel you could say they ’ve made me ‘glo(w), ” she smiled a

Zara McCord

Age: 17

Zara McCord rocks her teens with the passion and maturit y that well exceeds her 17 years A junior at Nor th Side High School, Zara is heavily immersed in its ar t scene, par ticipating in the marching and jazz bands. And if that weren’t enough, she’s also killing it with The Windows Band, proving the old adage that time isn’t a thing when you’re loving what you do

“I picked up an instrument, and in less than a month later, I was already playing for an audience, ” said Zara. “I have qualified for state competitions for vocal per formance as an eighth-grader and have been nominated for var ying music and per formance awards, as well.”

So what ’s on M iss McCord’s playlist?

“Being inspired by and tak ing as my muse many musicians from the ‘50s and ‘60s while per forming in a ‘70s and ‘80s post-punk/new wave band, I’d say that for someone my age I have a ver y well-informed k nowledge of music, ” she said “Unlike most my peers, I don’t pay attention to who’s on the top of the pop char ts I choose to instead focus on the unsung heroes of what music is today : bands like Dolly M ix ture a hidden gem who only made 2,000 copies of their album or Richard Hell the grandfather of the punk rock fashion and music movement.”

Zara’s k nack for expression and per forming has also led her to the theater, where she has played leading roles ranging from a swamp princess to the son of Charlemagne. She also exercises her intellec t by par ticipating in speech events, for which she has won numerous awards.

While there’s no doubt that Zara McCord is one ver y cool girl, perhaps the coolest thing about her is her hear t

“I’ve been involved with Kids Sur viving Cancer and ser ve as co-president of Nor th Side’s Legendar y Lady Leaders, which helps to empower and help women in the community, ” said Zara “ The Windows Band has helped with Kids Sur viving Cancer fundraisers and is currently work ing with other local For t Wayne bands to help raise money to build houses in the Dominican Republic.”

Ever yone can take a lesson from the Zaras of the world We, at glo, are awed and truly inspired by this gal’s talent, ambition and compassion and we can’t wait to see the woman she becomes a

Habits of Gals 8 Successful

We all know a woman or maybe you are the woman who seems like she c an do it all. She just seems to accomplish more in a day than anyone else, and it seems like she does it without even smudging her lipstick.

The truth? This woman is successful because she's established a handful of habits that make her effor ts look easy. Whether we are a career woman, housewife or a work-at-home mom, we can adopt those same habits and become the successful women we want to be.

1

She is an early riser or a night owl, but not both.

Today's woman gets more done before 9 a m or after 9 p m than most people do all day She k nows the time to get serious about getting things done is when she is most produc tive Are you a morning person or do you love to stay up long after the rest of the household is asleep? Whichever is true for you should be the time of day that's guarded like a fine box of DeBrand's Chocolates.

2 She is a planner, not a pantster.

Most of us have a to-do list that's way longer than the number of hours in a day, so how do successful women seem to stay on top of ever ything? They're doing it differently These women k now more time can be found if you plan week ly meals, chores and doc tor appointments on a calendar or planner Having an organized schedule also helps routines to run smoother and saves more time in the day

3 She does not procrastinate.

We've all opened an email and decided to respond later or deal with it when we get home The procrastination struggle is real, but it's easily overcome by putting an end to the habit of putting things off Any task that can be completed immediately, should be Successful women tack le a task as soon as it hits her hand (or inbox) and keeps all the time that gets sucked away by the ac t of procrastination

4 She is prepared for success.

Today's successful woman is prepared for the nex t day. She's really not more disciplined than the nex t woman, she just sets herself up for success by getting things ready for the following day. Work clothes are laid for the morning, elec tronics are charged, lunches are made and ever ything is ready to grab as she walks out the door. Handling the morning rush proac tively keeps her from scrambling in the morning and arriving at her destination an anxious mess

5 She knows she c an't do it all, and she doesn't feel guilty. No one can do it all For ever y choice to do one thing, another thing is sacrificed Women who seem like they're doing it all don't spend a minute feeling guilty about any of the things they don't do because they k now that guilt has a way of robbing both the time and energy that could be put to other uses.

6 She has no problem saying no.

Since the successful woman k nows she cannot do it all and be effective, she k nows when to say 'yes' and when to say 'no ' Most overwrought women are guilty of overex tending themselves, not just by doing too much, but by doing things that aren't fulfilling for them Learn to say 'no' to things that don't fit your schedule or won't make you feel like you're contributing in a meaningful way

7 She eliminates time wasters.

Technology, T V, your smar t Phone, and the internet are just a few common distrac tions

8 She takes time for herself.

Unfor tunately, sometimes we focus on our schedules and forget our quality time As long as you schedule time you will establish a great work-life balance Having positive motivation is helpful to you finishing your work tasks The key is finding inspiration to stay creative a

Man Crush

Mike Nutter

Hometown: This is the most complic ated question I get! My dad was in sales so we moved around a lot (born in Akron, Ohio, lived in Napoleon, Ohio through 8th grade, high school in S an Francisco Bay Area and then other stops in Dallas, Texas, Chic ago suburbs and Orlando area). For t Wayne is as long as I have ever lived any where (19 years). I met and married my wife, Beth, here and we had our 2 kids here—so, I’d say For t Wayne is our hometown.

Which women most shaped you into the man you are today?

My wife is my best friend and an amazing accountability par tner for me. She knows me better than anyone and still loves me. We have been married 15 years and she continues to shape me ever y day. My mom was always a great example and did a great job with us, showing what a strong woman looks like. My sister has been an awesome example as well. She’s ALWAYS positive… she is a breast c ancer sur vivor. To see her go through treatments (and maintain her positivity) was inspiring. Too, my daughter (K atelynn) is 13 and in 7th grade. I learn from her daily about the mind and the pressures of being a teenage young lady. She’s beautiful, hilarious, confident and incredibly intelligent so I like talking with her about life.

Women are…

An amazing gift from God. Extremely talented. Incredibly beautiful. Awesome teachers. I have learned how to be a better listener, how to show more grace and humility, and how to be a better man from women. They are motivating and inspiring. I would not have the strength or confidence to go through life without the guiding hand of my wife.

How can we learn more about you: www.TinCaps.com Twitter: @minorleaguenutt Nutter@TinCaps.com a

Senior Citizen

Health

None of us likes to admit it but we’re all growing older, and as such we are more subjec t to conditions like ar thritis, hear t disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer ’s disease, respirator y diseases, cancer, depression and more.

But there’s good news, too

The good news is that caring for oneself properly can reduce or cut down completely some of these chronic conditions To begin with, a healthy diet emphasizes vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fat-free/ low dair y produc ts I t also includes controlled-por tion sizes of lean meats, poultr y, fish, beans, eggs and nuts, while limiting saturated and trans fats, sodium and added sugars

Just as impor tant, you want to have a body that shows off a good health regimen by exercising at least 5 days a week. Take a walk during your lunch break; ride a bike, run or jog on our region’s natural bike/ hik ing trails; if you have access to a horse, a lovely canter across an open meadow can spark new life, both physical and mental

More tips can help you impac t a healthy lifestyle: limit alcohol to one drink daily ; if you smoke, stop; use moisturizers and sun protec tion; visit your doc tor routinely and review your list of medications; brush and floss teeth regularly, along with getting semiannual cleanings from your dentist; get a good night ’s sleep; keep up your social life both online by network ing and in person; and finally, take fun vacations

“Social network ing has become a huge par t in our daily lives, and our residents are no exception, ” said Alice Mar tin, direc tor of business development at Life Care Center

“Many residents use this medium for communication with family and friends, and some are even using Uber! As for exercise, they love our morning group exercise, which allows them to stretch and strengthen their muscles, ” Mar tin said.

Bonnie Black burn-Penhollow, direc tor of communications at V isiting Nurse and Hospice Home, is a young senior who takes care of herself by exercising or tak ing “mental breaks” during the day to feel better.

“I will often shut my office door and do quick yoga stretches to keep myself flexible and aler t, ” said Black burn-Penhollow

“At home, I relax by reading books, cook ing or readying my garden for spring planting I recently tapped into my creative side by tak ing a class where we made garden stepping stones using color ful bits of glass and other stones I t was great to use different par ts of my brain ”

Since her work place is a hospice, Black burn-Penhollow offered obser vations on older patients in general

“In hospice, when symptoms are properly controlled, our patients are able to spend time with their loved ones, pursuing their ‘meaningful moments’ with children and grandchildren, ” said Black burn-Penhollow

“ That could be as simple as sharing a meal together to having family celebrations Here at Hospice Home, we have bird feeders outside each room’s windows, and fountains and garden plantings to bring a sense of the healing of nature to both patients and their families ” a

glo-roscop es june 2018

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

You inherited your sense of whimsy from your father so this summer, take the time to build a sandcastle, play dress-up or sing a silly song Life is too shor t to be taken seriously so never become too dignified to par ticipate in a three-legged race, go barefoot or prove you still k now how to ac t like a k id

Cancer ( June 21 - July 22)

Did your father ac t more like a mother hen? If so, then is it any wonder that your own nur turing sk ills register a 9 5 on the Richter scale? You are constantly mak ing sure ever yone has enough to eat, is comfor table and well cared for. This month, look after yourself first.

Leo ( July 23 - August 22)

In your father ’s eyes, you are the per fec t princess who can do no wrong. From the moment you were born, he showered you with affec tion and said you were destined for great things. But because the rest of the world did not get that memo, you’ll have to prove yourself to others time and again this month

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

You grew up with Danny Tanner as a father who believed the world was a better place when the house was spotless He always had time for a hug and an emergenc y k it on standby at the slightest sign of a mishap This per fec tionist mentality rubbed off on you, but remember not ever y crisis can be aver ted

Libra (September 23 - Oc tober 22)

As handsome as he was charming, your father was also a born negotiator who did not tolerate any nonsense Is it any wonder that you approach ever y argument look ing for a diplomatic resolution? Although you may strive to understand ever yone’s point of view, someone will test your patience later this month.

Scorpio (Oc tober 23 - November 21)

Your father liked to spoil you rotten but his generosity came with an intensity that was a little hard to live with from time to time. This explains why you tend to gravitate toward uncomplicated relationships. Deep down, you long for someone whose personality is as fier y as your own.

Sagittarius

(November 22 - December 21)

Your father was the boy who never grew up and thankfully, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree You are still a big k id at hear t who watches Saturday morning car toons while eating a fun, fruity breakfast cereal festooned with a color ful mascot Go to an amusement park this month and let your inner child play

Capricorn (December 22 - Januar y 19)

Due to his rigid schedule, it may have seemed as though your father was Captain Von Trapp, but thankfully, he balanced his penchant for protocol with a loving environment that was full of the sound of music, good times and plenty of laughter. Give yourself a break from the schedule this month.

Aquarius ( Januar y 20 - Februar y 18)

Remember when your father camped out with you in the back yard? Helped you build that tree house or showed you the moon from a telescope? I t ’s time to carr y on the family tradition with your own children. Remember, they won’t be k ids forever. Make memories that will last.

Pisces (Februar y 19 - March 20)

Your father lives in a world all his own. Send him to the grocer y store for bread and milk and he’ll come home with jellybeans and potato chips While you tend to be more traditional, you appreciate his offbeat approach to life Do something wack y this month and revel in the whimsy of the moment

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

Are you a work aholic? If so, you can thank your father for instilling such a strong work ethic in you As the ultimate provider, he worked long hours to give you ever ything you needed and most of what you wanted But remember, time is precious and no one lasts forever Stop by or call your father more often

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

Even though he is not as young as he used to be, you are still convinced your father is a superhero Although he could not leap tall buildings in a single bound, he seemed to be able to handle any crisis life threw at him. Look for a par tner who reminds you of your ver y own “man of steel.” a
