Executive Director of Fort Wayne Trails, Inc. Megan McClellan is a trailblazer in more ways than one. From her early travels to her current bike rides, she is taking steps to create a beautiful, functional system of trails for our community.
McClellan has had her fair share of travels. She spent several years of her childhood living in Holland; one year in Germany as an exchange student; one year in Cairo, Egypt her senior year of high school; and a college semester abroad in Namibia, Africa. After getting married, she and her husband, Bob, served together in the Peace Corps in Niger for 27 months.
McClellan is passionate about the trails in Fort Wayne and Allen County and has been creating ideas for quite some time. She has a Master’s Degree in Environmental Policy and wrote her master’s thesis on “Adaptive and Collaborative Management of Urban Trails.” She is also a board member of the Greenways Foundation of Indiana, a statewide non-profit trails advocacy organization. She adores the trail system and is excited to bring more of her ideas and expertise to the community.
“I love being able to ride my bike to work at the Auer Center, or just hop on the Rivergreenway and go for miles,” McClellan said. “You really get a different view of the rivers from the trails.”
“There are currently 120 miles of completed trail in Allen County,” McClellan explained, “There are over 10 miles of trail in the works for 2020.”
To find out where, grab a new 2020 trail map or download the Fort Wayne Trails app on your smart phone for free. The app is regularly updated, and businesses associated with the app provide services like discounts, water refills and bike repairs to trail users.
McClellan hopes to focus on closing all gaps in the trails.
“We are especially excited about the ‘Golden Spike’ section of trail,” McClellan said. This will be a small section of the Pufferbelly trail, but it will connect the North and South trails, making 115 miles of connected trails.
Another focus in years ahead is to make the trails more equitable and better balanced. She strives to make everyone’s voice heard and develop the best possible trail system for the community by including jobs, public transportation and schools.
Get to know the trails by attending the Trek the Trails kickoff at 6PM on April 28 at Eagle Marsh Barn. It includes a free 8-mile bike ride, followed by a casual meal, drinks and music for a small donation. Join the community each Tuesday at 6PM throughout the summer for additional free bike rides on other parts of the trails. For more trail events, check out the events calendar at FWtrails.org. a
