We’ve put together some tips and tricks for how to survive in the worst heat. Christine Kuznar, senior associate athletic director at Purdue Fort Wayne Athletics, needs to care for herself as well as students. “Part of my responsibilities at my university is to work with our sports medicine department to make sure we are creating and maintaining a safe environment with regard to all temperatures,” Kuznar said. “In the case of heat, if it ‘feels’ like temperatures are in the advisory range or higher (warning range) we take very specific steps that can apply to everyone to stay safe in the heat
of summer: • Limit time of activity. • Limit direct sun exposure • Increase water intake — basically drink water, even before you are thirsty. • Wear light-colored clothing to help reflect sunlight and dissipate heat.” During an interview one day in late July, Kuznar kept a hat nearby that had a brim to shade her face and made sure a bottle filled with cold water was handy. She emphasized that athletes need to be especially careful. “In sum, we will monitor and limit time outside with an eye to ‘exertion levels’. We increase intake of water for fluid replacement, and have a cool area in the shade or inside to recover normal body temperature after physical activity,” she said. “For our athletes, we will do weigh-ins before, during Continued on page 3
