39 years is a long time to work at one place but for Terry McCoy, it has been a job she has loved. As of Friday, Oct. 30, 2020, her time as a carhop at Mr. Weenie’s has come to an end. “I’m definitely going to miss my co-workers and my customers. It’s going to seem so strange not going in there every week. All the walking I’ve done there… great exercise…better than a sit-down job any day. Going to work every week was never anything I dreaded, because it’s always been a fun place to work. Probably why I stayed for 39 years,” McCoy said. Pulling into Mr. Weenie on McCoy’s last day seemed as if there was a special going on and everyone in town was taking advantage of the deal. But the menu wasn’t the draw. It was a day filled with friends and family stopping by for a quick bite and mostly to congratulate McCoy on her retirement. If there was a special to be had, it belonged to McCoy. Her son, Cory, and his wife, Asia, drove 13 hours, all through the night, to surprise her. They wanted to be her last customers on her last day. And they were! The Miami County Artisan Gallery (MCAG), 20 North Broadway, Peru, Indiana, has scheduled a November, 4-class series, "Painting Portraits with Patrick Redmon." The dates are Nov. 4, 11, 16 and 23. The times are 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nonmembers 12+ (and at all skill levels) costs is $25 per class and $90 for the series. Members cost is $20 per class and $75 per series. Materials are furnished, masks and social distancing followed, and light refreshments will be provided. Mr. Patrick Redmon, artist, is a Peru native, world traveler, an award winning artist, art teacher at Maconaquah Middle School, a musician, a chess teacher, a tennis coach, and has a chocolate company and art studio in the Miami County Artisan Gallery. Class members will enjoy a splash of acrylic color, and paint a portrait of a loved one, person or animal. They will learn basic brushwork, color blending and selection, color theory, and how to use the grid method for accurate, easy portraits with a splash of color and highlights. These classes will encourage the use of 3-color schemes with an additional "splash" of colors and highlights. Students can find out how to paint their own picture! After closing each class with a positive critique session, participants will mix and mingle to enjoy the refreshments and network. MCAG is also presenting an exceptional Art Educational Seminar, featuring J.O. Buffington, Artist. "The Wonders of Watercolors" is set for Saturday, Nov. 14, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Individuals aged 16 and over can RSVP by Nov. 10, at $40 for nonmembers and $35 members. At the door, the cost will be $45 nonmembers and $40 members. Materials are furnished, masks and social distancing followed, and light refreshments will be provided. FY21 Arts Project Support. The goal of this project is to educate and inspire artists at any level, entrepreneurs, and the public for community and individual development. Mr. Buffington, a Peru native, has been an art icon for over 40 years. He mastered his art throughout his life by teaching and doing demonstra-
tions for schools and community events. He is an award-winning artist, and very active in the Indiana Plein Aire Painters Association. He beautifully captures the "outdoor feelings of the mist, sun, and the colors." His first session will present the basics of watercolor, followed by a simple interactive lesson. His
unique guides and color techniques will bring participants to a new understanding of watercolors. After a break, the second session resumes with the fantastic painting experience. After closing with a positive critique session, participants will mix and mingle to enjoy the refreshments and network. Dorothy Jean Higgins, 93 Dorothy Jean Higgins, 93, of Peru passed away at 8:50 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020, at the Blair Ridge Health Campus. She was born in Pulaski County, Indiana, Jan. 8, 1927, the daughter of William Ray and Goldie Nickels Siddall. Jean married William L. Higgins in Logansport, Indiana, Oct. 10, 1952, and he preceded her in death April 4, 2014. Jean was a 1946 graduate of Lucerne High School and a member of the First Baptist Church in Peru where she was the kindergarten Sunday School teacher for many years. She was an avid golfer, a mem-
ber of the Miami County Golf Association and a former member of the Dukes Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Jean was employed by the Miami-Cass County REMC for more than 25 years retiring as office manager in 1987. She is survived by a son, Steven Higgins of
Peru and a daughter Marla Butler of Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, a son-in-law James Butler, a brother Dale Siddall and sisters Maryella Godfroy and Arlene Vassey. A private funeral service for Dorothy Jean Higgins will be held at the First Baptist Church, 53 E. Main St., Peru with pastor Robert Adelsperger officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Obituaries Megan Jane Hewitt Stetzel, 36 Megan Jane (Hewitt) Stetzel was found Monday, Oct. 26, 2020, to have gone to be with her Lord and Savior, after a 3 ½ year battle with a brain injury that she sustained in an automobile accident. Megan was born in Peru Feb. 24, 1984, and raised by her mother, Julia (Hewitt) Bischoff and “Dadders” Erik Atkinson. She graduated from Peru High school in 2002, where she enjoyed choir, playing volleyball, basketball, and track and performing in the Peru Amateur Circus. She loved continuing her education thru IU, IPFW, and IBC, graduating with honors in all that she did. Megan loved her children, Isaac and Lydia Sheets, dearly and loved playing board games with them. She was an amazing artist and piano player. She enjoyed reading her Bible and writing out her devotions daily until the end. Gene “SARGE” Rairigh, 88 Gene “SARGE” Rairigh passed away at his home Monday, Oct. 26, 2020, after a 2-year battle with cancer. Gene was born June 27, 1932, and was raised on a farm in Cass County by his Aunt Gladys and Uncle Mervin Rynerson. His parents Lloyd & Thais Rairigh and Thelma & Waldo Reed preceded him in death. Gene enlisted in The United States Army Feb. 26, 1952, and served 6years as part of The 15th Quartermaster Battalion where he received a National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Army of Occupational Medal. He was stationed at Rhine Air Force Base in Germany, where he met his wife of 65 years, Renate Rosa Oberdorf, she survives. Gene worked for United Parcel Service for over 30 years as a delivery driver. He was a very hardworking and dedicated employee that was known to many as “Sarge”, others recognized him from his
grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. One grandson, Landon Rairigh and great-granddaughter Kali Reed preceded him in death. Judith Kay Bostick Stogsdill, 73 Judith Kay (Bostick) Stogsdill, 73, passed away at 9:32 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2020, at Dukes Memorial Hospital. Judy was born May 22, 1947, in Peru to Samuel and Agnes (Mann) Tolly. After graduation from North Miami High School in 1965, Judy married James R. Bostick Jr. July 9, 1966 (Florida), and they divorced Nov. 1, 1989. They were married for 23 years, and had two children – a son, Robert L. Bostick of Florida, and a daughter, Dena K. Bostick of Peru. On Aug. 25, 1990, Judy married Dennis O. Stogsdill (Michigan/Peru), and he preceded her in death in Dec.,2006. They were married for 16 years. Judy worked at Square D Co. in Peru until retiring in 2000. She attended church at Chapel Ministries Outreach in Mexico, Indiana. She had 8 brothers and
sisters. Preceding her in death were brother Jimmy Tolley, who died at birth, Nancy A. Hummel (Michigan), and brother Samuel L. Tolley (Mexico). Her surviving brothers and sisters are: Rose Meives (Peru), Florance Barker (Georgia), Phillip Tolley (Peru), Nina Wold (Peru), and Mary Sarver (Peru). Judy leaves behind 4 grandchildren – Brittany (Druyor) Hawkins (Peru), Jacob Bostick (Alabama), Ryan Bo-
stick (Mississippi), and Kayli Underwood (Peru). She leaves 7 great-grandchildren: Carley, SamuelEdward, Chance, Conner, Sophie, Edda J, and Cole; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Obituaries Lieutenant Colonel Sidney J. Kubesch, 90 Lieutenant Colonel Sidney J. Kubesch closed his final flight plan Oct. 26, 2020, earning his ultimate promotion – Heaven. Or, as Sid would say, he “turned in his belly button.” Col. Kubesch passed peacefully in his sleep at his home, Good Enough Farm, surrounded by the loving hands of his wife, five children and loving extended family. He was a true American hero who lead an extraordinary life. Born April 18, 1930, in El Campo, Texas, as the oldest of three children of Mary (Tannich) and Emil G. Kubesch, he was followed by brother, Robert (Bob) Kubesch (deceased) and baby sister, LaVerne (Kubesch) Lippman, presently of Lake Jackson, Texas. As a young boy in rural Texas during the depression, he worked at the family grocery store, excelled in mathematics and music while also playing the bass violin in a local big band, delighting audiences to a “roaring good time.” However, one thing captured his attention and imagination more than anything else – watching airplanes soar through the sky. As a
young man he picked cotton, earning enough money to pay for flying lessons, and seven days after his 18th birthday he made his first solo flight at Kerrville Flying Service. Sid coupled his pilot license with an engineering degree from Wharton college in Texas leading to 60 years as a pilot and a twenty-year groundbreaking career in the United States Air Force. From 1950 until 1970, Sidney was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. Before being stationed at Bunker Hill Air Force Base, he served all over the world, including an extended period in North Africa and Tampa, Florida. His Air Force career led the native Texan to Peru, Indiana, where he met and married the farm girl of his dreams, after being set up on a blind date to attend a greased pig contest.
Sidney married Joanne Cole in 1962 at St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church. Joey and Sid started their family at Bunker Hill Air Force Base, with their firstborn son, Kurt Cole Kubesch. A transfer to Montgomery, Alabama, included the addition of daughter, Maryalice Williams. Then a stint at Strategic Air Command brought the birth of sons, James (Jay) and Joseph (Joe) Kubesch, in Omaha, Nebraska. There were Saint Bernard dogs as pets all along the way making for a big Kubesch family. The family would load their giant dogs into a Piper Aztec airplane and Sid would pilot the whole crew on vacations across the United States, but especially to his childhood home in El Campo. Throughout his life, Sid wrote weekly letters home to his parents until their passing. Col. Kubesch served his country during the Korean War and the Cold War era and told amazing stories about his role during the Cuban missile crisis. Sid piloted numerous planes including the Piper J3 Cub, Boeing B-47 Stratojet, B-25 Mitchell
bomber, Boeing B-29 Superfortress, T-39 Saberliner and the Convair B-58 Hustler nuclear bomber. On Oct. 16, 1963, Sid piloted the “Greased Lightning” mission, flying the B-58 from Tokyo to London at speeds in excess of mach 2. After five inflight refueling sessions and two pipefuls of good tobacco, then Major Kubesch had circled 8,028 miles halfway around the world - in eight hours 35 minutes at an average speed of 938 miles per hour, setting a world speed record that still stands today. Sid would forever revel in the having seen two sunrises in one day due to the flights’ speed and course. This mission demonstrated the United States’ ability to deliver a nuclear payload across the world in minimal time and served to retain peace during the Cold War. Always a humble man, the celebrity status that went along with this world speed-record wasn’t always comfortable for Sid. But, he often told his children that he felt like King for a Day when the Air Force coordinated the crew’s media tour through New York City and
Rex W. Klise, 80 Rex W. Klise, 80, of rural Kokomo, passed away at 3:52 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020. He was born in Miami County, Dec. 6, 1939, the son of Raymond W. and Mary Alice Phelps Klise. Rex married Marilyn Lavengood at the Kokomo Zion UMC May 16, 1959, and she survives. Rex was 1957 graduate of Clay Township High school and member of the Galveston United Methodist Church. He was a lifelong Miami County farmer and a Becks Seed Corn dealer.
Rex was an avid collector of antique John Deere Tractors and a member of the MiamiPeru Masonic Lodge No. 67 F&AM. He loved camping with
family and friends. Family was very important to Rex and he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Surviving in addition to his wife Marilyn is a daughter Karen (Larry) Miller of Kokomo, a son Dr. Terry (Suzanne) Klise of Missoula, Montana, a brother Max Klise of Kokomo, grandchildren Christopher Miller, Jennifer Weber, Cameron Klise and Brandon Klise and a great grandson Leo Miller.
include his wife of 58 years, Joey Cole Kubesch, his five children: Kurt Kubesch, Maryalice Williams (and son-in-law, Kent), Jay Kubesch (and sonin-law, Fermin Rojas), Joe Kubesch (and daughter-in-law, Leila), and Polly Dobbs (and son-in-law Steve). Grandchildren: Audreyalice Warner (husband, Paul, son and Sid’s only great-grandchild, Rex), Jolie Kubesch, George and Peter Williams, Jonathan, Sidney, William and Cole Kubesch, Finley Dobbs and Julian (“JT”) Dobbs. Also, little sister, LaVerne Lippman, sister-inlaw, Jean Kubesch, and Sid’s nieces and nephews in Texas and beyond will always have special memories of Uncle Sid. Sid’s Catholic faith was a hallmark of his life and guided the way he raised his family. The family is planning a private Mass of Christian Burial at St. Charles Borromeo Church with the Rev. His honors included the Meritorious Service Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross and in 1963 he was presented with the David C. Shilling Award for “most outstanding contribution in the field of flight.” In 1970 Sid retired from the Air Force and settled on his wife’s family farms Good Enough and Westleigh near Peru, Indiana, where he managed the family businesses with his father-in-law, James O. Cole. On their 15th wedding anniversary, Sid and Joey added daughter, Polly Dobbs, to make their family seven. Sid often remarked how blessed he felt to have such a large family, because after so many years of straddling nuclear bombs, he wasn’t sure “an old guy like him had it in him.” Over the years he took great pleasure as an avid-outdoorsmen, big game hunter and fisherman, always enjoying every opportunity to be afield in nature. Terry Bixler Temple, 86 Terry Bixler Temple, 86, of Peru peacefully joined his heavenly family Sunday, Oct. 25, 2020, at 11:25 p.m. in his home on Lake James. Both Terry and his lovely wife Mary Keyes Temple, who preceded him in death in 2010, were born and raised in Peru, Indiana, and were actively involved in serving the Peru community throughout their lives. Terry was born at Dukes Hospital in Peru, Indiana, Sept. 4, 1934, to Annabel M. Temple and the late Robert S. Temple. Also preceding Terry in death are his brother Robert and sisters Roberta and Anne. A graduate of Peru High School, Terry continued his education at Rollins College, Florida, and
Duke University, North Carolina, actively playing on the golf team at both and became a graduate of Indiana University. He was a member of Sigma Nu. Terry was passionate about the game of golf and at 16 he was runner-up at the National Junior’s Tournament in Indiana, always keeping it “low and slow” as was his motto. Terry was an active member of the
Peru Community, serving as an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church and on the church finance board as a financial consultant, donating many hours of his expertise. He served many years on the Board of the Rolling Chapel, was a Rotarian and an active member of the Society of the Gideons. Terry was a selfemployed financial planner owning his own investment company from the first year he graduated college. He was affiliated with Raymond James Investment Management Company. He was also a real estate broker and developer building, owning, and operating Millstone Apartments as well as farm land and rental property management. Terry above all
Marjorie Ellen Runkle, 88 Marjorie Ellen Runkle, 88, of St. James City, Florida, passed away at 4:55 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020, at her daughters home in Mexico, Indiana. She was born Tyner, Indiana, Augt. 7, 1932, the daughter of Delmar and Goldie Hardesty. She was married to Kenneth Runkle and he preceded her in death. She was a life member of VFW Post 4363, American Legion Post 136, Moose Lodge 54, and the Pine Island United Methodist Church. Weed wrangle in Miami County On Saturday, Oct. 24, the Upper Wabash Invasives Network (UWIN) and Friends of the Nickel Plate Trail (NPT) held a Weed WrangleⓇ at the Miami and Fulton County line along the Nickel Plate Trail. 20 volunteers and professionals learned about invasive species along the NPT, the damage they cause to native biodiversity, how to identify the invasive species, and how to remove and control them. This event was part of the Indiana Invasives Initiative and was made possible by the collaboration of UWIN, Friends of the Nickel Plate Trail, Rooted in Forestry, Miami
County Highway Department, Southern Indiana Cooperative Invasives Management (SICIM), and citizens of Fulton and Miami counties. Over the course of two hours, workers removed bush honeysuckle, autumn olive, and white mulberry along a half mile stretch of the NPT. With the assistance of the Miami County Highway Department, more than two full dump trucks of invasive plants were loaded and removed for disposal. Aaron Lewis, 82, of Peru passed away peacefully at 11:25 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family. Born June 16, 1938, in Farler, Kentucky, he was son of the late Hagard and Pearlie Lewis. On Sept. 19, 1975, he married Connie S. Chaffin-Lindsey, she survives. Aaron retired from Wabash Alloys in Wabash. He was a member of the Westside Church of Christ and Aaron enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening, watching ballgames, gospel and country music, playing card games, horse races especially the Kentucky Derby but most of all his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Connie Lewis of Peru, his children, Katherine Lindsey of South Bend, Carol Hess (William) of Four Acre, Gary Lindsey of Peru, Sandra Forrey (Scott) of Casey, Illinois, and Karen Blackwell (Lane) of Peru. Thomas R. Bickel, 87 Thomas R. Bickel, 87, of Peru passed away at 9:50 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020, at the Blair Ridge Health Campus. He was born in Wabash, Indiana, on Jan. 15, 1933, the son of Raymond and Matilda Jane Meek Bickel. Tom married Wanda Sue Webb Bickel at the Speicherville Evangelical United Brethren Church, Wabash, Indiana, Nov. 29, 1951, and she survives. Tom is a 1951 graduate of Wabash High School and a member of the First Baptist Church in Peru. Tom was the maintenance
superintendent at the First Baptist Church for 34 years from 1960-1994. His motto was, “God’s House should have the best and look its best at all times.” At age 8 or 9 he sold pop, gum, and candy at his dad’s garage in Cul-
ver. Later he mowed lawns. As a young man he had a paper route on the west end of Wabash. While in high school he worked part-time at the Eagles and Colonial Theatres in Wabash popping corn. He worked at Kitchen Maid Factory in Andrews, Indiana, from 1952-1956. He was employed as a Forester at the Salamonie River State Forest at Lagro from 1956-1960. Tom was a hardworking, caring, and compassionate man. He was a carpenter, a writer, a father of four and has been
married to the same woman for 68 years. Tom was the most amazing husband, father, and grandfather and has certainly left very large shoes to fill. Meriell Mert J. Turnpaugh, 83 Meriell (Mert) J. Turnpaugh, 83, of Peru passed away at 9:05 p.m. Oct. 31, 2020, at her residence. She was born in Peru, Indiana, May 3, 1937, the daughter of Joseph Donat and Wilma See. Meriell married Larry J. Turnpaugh at the St. Charles Catholic Church in Peru Aug. 17, 1957, and he preceded her in death July 18, 2001. Meriell graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1955 and attended Ball State University. She and her husband owned and operated Leonda Mobile Home Park in Peru where she served as the secretary. Meriell was also an active member of the Bunker Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Family was very important to Meriell. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was very caring, giving, and hard-working. Meriell was a devout Christian whose faith guided her in every endeavor. Cud Willis, 88 Cud was born Jan. 31, 1932, in Powell Co, Kentucky, to Elsworth and Mable (Franks) Willis. Both are deceased. He came to Indiana at 4 years of age, residing in Chili, Mexico and Peru, then settling in Bunker Hill, Indiana, on 218, on a farm on the north side of the base with his parents and 5 sisters: Fontilla (deceased), Lula Mae (deceased), Maxine (deceased), Nancy (deceased) and Betty (deceased). He plowed many garden plots in and around the city for extra money. He graduated in 1952 at Bunker Hill, Indiana, and was soon drafted into the Army, going to serve in the Korea War as a tank mechanic in 8/1952 and was discharged as a Cpl in 8/1954. He then started working at the Peru City Utilities in September 1954, as a truck driver, and continued on up to a truck foreman by 1969. He climbed a lot of poles in all kinds of weather and repaired many lines and lights to many homes in Peru. He met his wife Shirley Irene (Malott) in October 1954. She was only 16 years old and May 29, 1955, they were married at St Paul’s EUB Church of Peru. He left the City of Peru Utilities in March 1969, for the Utilities Dept. at GAFB Civil Service until his retirement there in March 1997, as an Electrical Installation and maintenance supervisor again working in all kinds of weather and conditions, keeping the runway lights

Rusty Perry, 51 Rusty Perry, 51, of Peru, Indiana, went to his eternal home unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020. Rusty was born in Lafayette, Indiana, Oct. 14, 1969. His parents are Marvin and Pauletta (Allen) Perry. He attended North White elementary school and graduated from Pioneer Jr. Sr. High School in 1988. After graduation, he worked as a Supervisor at Wabash National. He later moved to Winamac and worked various construction jobs. He moved to Peru, Indiana, in 2006 and worked as a CNA. In his later years, he worked at FCA Chrysler Casting
Plant in Kokomo. Rusty was blessed with a large family and he enjoyed spending time with those that he loved. It didn’t matter if it was hitting the putting green with his father and brothers or romping on the ground with his kids or grandkids. He loved the Dallas
Cowboys and hunting. He enjoyed sitting by the fire and listening to music. He loved playing cards and watching movies. Surviving family include his loving wife Wendy (Moore) Perry. His 10 adoring children and nine grandchildren.
