Besides these beautiful, unique golf balls, Larson has authenticated reproductions of the ‘gutty golf ball’ from the early 1900s, golf’s first rubber ball, that revolutionized the game. “Originals in good condition can sometimes sell for thousands of dollars.” (Photos by Steve Harris)

hickory golfers keeps the heritage alive by playing with antique clubs and authenticated reproductions. Larson learned golf from his dad as a boy, and by his 30s was playing 100 rounds a year with a five handicap. But life

changes—and so did Larson’s golf. In his 50s, after neck fusion and a knee replacement, golf wasn’t fun for him anymore. “I got tired of saying, ‘I used to be able to do that,’” he remembers. “I heard about hickory golf and ingave it a try.” Larson quickly learned the major dif-

ANTIQUES EXCELSIOR

ference between antique and modern golf. “Hickory golf is more about precise shotmaking than distance. Each club has its own personality, feel and distance, so you need to adjust your shotmaking accordingly.” Does that make hickory golf harder than modern golf? Yes, he admits, but that adds

to its charm. “A golfer aims for a club’s sweet spot,” he says. “A sweet spot on a modern club is the size of a half-dollar. You can miss by half an inch and still be okay. A hickory club’s sweet spot is the size of a pea. If you miss by half an inch, you’ll miss the entire ball. But when you hit that sweet

spot, boy, what a feeling!” Larson, now 65, started playing hickory golf—and collecting golf clubs, balls, and memorabilia—a decade

The Old Times

If it doesn’t leap out at you, run! by Joan Sween My cousin Jack was coming to visit for a day. Jack tended to be a little bossy, but generally he was a pretty nice guy. A giant antique show was at the convention arena, and both Jack and I were excited about attending. I had just decided to start a collection of Vallerysthal glass, both the light blue opaline and the translucent Vaseline. We started at the first booth at the end of the first row. I sauntered through, my eyes raking the shelves, and moved on toward the second booth. “Wait a minute,” said Jack, grabbing my elbow. “Aren’t you going to check to see if he has any Vallerysthal?” “I did check,” I said. “He doesn’t have any.” “You make a 50-second pass through a booth with hundreds

of items, and you’re certain he doesn’t have any? That’s unbelievable.” “Not really,” I said. “Ask almost any collector. When you’re looking for something particular, it will leap out at you.”

He gave me a long, dubious stare.

He gave me a long, dubious stare. “Not literally ‘leap out’”, I said. “It’s like a retina thing. Your brain knows the approximate size, shape and color of what you’re looking for, so when your eye passes over something that fits those parameters, your brain puts on the brakes and causes it to leap out at you.” “I can’t believe you would search in such a slipshod manner,” Jack said. “You have a bionic retina that sends out an alarm when you pass what you’re looking for? Why don’t

you simply ask the vendor if he has what you want?” “It takes too much time,” I said. “We’d never get through the show.” “Oh, piffle,” snorted Jack. “How much time does it take for the vendor to say ‘yes’ or ‘no?’ Come here,” he said, pulling me back into the first booth. “Help you?” said the vendor. “Do you have any Vallerysthal?” asked Jack. “Valerie…?” said the vendor. “Vallerysthal,” said Jack. “Spell that,” said the vendor. Jack spelled it. “It’s a French glass company,” he said. “We’re looking for either the blue or the Vaseline pieces. “Ah,” said the vendor. “Yes, I have some very nice French pieces. Now take this vase…” He picked up an 8-inch Sevres-style

vase in dark blue with a painted lady on it. “No, no,” said Jack. “That’s ceramic, and anyway the blue is way too dark.” “Oh, right,” said the vendor. “How about this lovely bowl in light blue glass?” He offered a Fenton bowl with hobnails. “No, not North American glass,” said Jack. “French!” “Well, now,” said the vendor, what have you got against good old American glass? Are you one of those yahoos who want to teach us all to sing the Mar-say-yay?” “What has the Marseillaise got to do with it?” barked Jack in a loud voice. The vendor from the booth across the aisle, quick-stepped over. “This guy giving you trouble, Myron?” he asked our vendor. “He’s looking for glass made by some French babe named Valerie.” “No, you’ve got it all wrong,” said Jack. “It’s Vallerysthal;

it?” shouted Jack. “I suggest you move on,” said the show manager. “I’ll let you stay if you don’t go telling anyone else about Valerie and Lorraine. Got that?” Cousin Jack and I moved on. “Ready to try the bionic retina system?” I asked.

they’re a French glassmaking company founded in 1836 in Lorraine.” Just then, the show manager showed up. “What’s the trouble here?” he asked, giving Jack a fishy look. “I think it’s sort of a con game,” said our vendor. “He’s looking for glass painted by two French ladies named Valerie and Lorraine. But he admits they did it almost 200 years ago, so they’ve got to be dead by now, so what’s his game?” “He sounded postal to me,” said the vendor from across the aisle. “What’s the Post Office got to do with

learn of my first on-air assignment: “You’ll be interviewing Jane Fonda. Live.” Ms. Fonda was in town for the premiere of On Golden Pond. Her father Henry, the film’s star (and eventual Oscar-winner) was too ill to attend, so Jane was filling in. Omaha was Henry Fonda’s hometown, where he’d made his stage debut many moons ago. It was January, and that particular night was the coldest Omaha had experienced in decades, with a 20-below wind chill.
