Autumn Frazier From Grandma’s closet to Vintage Threads

Autumn Frazier’s grandmother, Carrie Wallace (seen here left of man), was one of the biggest fashion influences on Autumn’s life. Early to mid-2 th century, men and women made a point of dressing up when going out in public. (Photo courtesy of Autumn Frazier)

Autumn Frazier in a vintage favorite. People of a certain age will look at this coat and immediately say, “Nineteen-eighties.” And they’d be right. Not only does it bear the nice boxy shoulder pads popular in the ’80s, but it has the sequined glitz of Michael Jackson during the blockbuster success of his album, Thriller. by Britt Aamodt MINNEAPOLIS – Autumn Frazier was born in Minneapolis at the tail end of the baby boom. She was too young for Woodstock and the trippy counterculture. Anyway, that was never her thing, fashion-wise. For her, the look was late ’50s to early ’60s. She learned the style from the bestdressed women in her life, her mom and especially her grandma. When Frazier decided to ditch the corporate world after the ugly business Americans remember as the Great Recession, she took a cue from

The Old Times Classic black dresses never go out of style, and Frazier is always on the lookout for them. Below and at right (detail), is one Frazier picked up at an estate sale. The owner had appreciated its versatility and held onto it for decades.

For Frazier, fashion may go out of style, but a beautiful piece of clothing is always beautiful. “I’ll go shopping with someone. We’ll be at a sale, and I’ll find something, and they’ll say, ‘How’d you find that? I didn’t even see that,” she said.

Her answer? It’s all in the eye. Frazier got her fashion eye at home. “I learned it early on. I learned by watching what [my mother and grandmother] wore,” she said. Her grandma was born in 1921, her mom in 1941. Two decades apart. But the style that Frazier remembers them sharing was classic

The Old Times

by Joan Sween One day this past July, The Man I Married and I were at a garage sale where there was a full-length, faux leopard fur coat. It looked like it might be my size--a size some of the newer boutiques are cleverly calling “On Beyond Generous.” I tried it on and it fit. It was big and cushy. A man from the other side of the garage called out, “Looks nice on you.” “Do I look fat in it?” I asked him. “It suits you. Looks

By Joan Sween nice,” he said. “Yeah, but do I look fat in it,” I persisted. “Lady, don’t push it. You look good in it,

OK?” he called back. I looked around for a mirror to see myself in. No mirrors for sale. I made eye contact with The Man I Married. “Buy it,” he said. I was flabbergasted. TMIM never tells me what to do. His style is to let me go my merry way, and when the results roll in, he either swells with pride or cowers in embarrassment--whichever seems appropriate. So I bought the coat. Naturally I first pointed out to the homeowner how poor I

was, and how undecided I was without a mirror to look in, and how useless the coat would be for half of any year. Naturally she pointed out to me how much she paid for it in the first place, how a total stranger had complimented me in it, and how expensive it was to take her grandchildren to Valley

Fair these days. We arrived at a price. When I got home, I pulled on the coat and rushed for a full-length mirror. “I look like a Sherman Tank in faux leopard camouflage,” I snorted. “I look like Elton John--and his piano--in faux leopard upholstery,” I whined. “I look like mamma and poppa leopard and six half-grown leopardettes all huddled together for a nap,” I moaned. I turned and gave TMIM a squintyeyed frown. “Now cut that out,”

Gorgeous, no lie.

he said. “It looks very nice on you. It only looks like four leopardettes, and they’re all gorgeous.” Gorgeous? I looked in the mirror again. Well.... maybe if I poufed my hair a little more, wore sunglasses, and put on some lipstick

for a change? Hmmm. Sophia Loren? Rula Lenska? Liberace? Time passed and it’s winter now, and I could finally wear my cushy, full-length, faux leopard coat to an antiques show. I started down the first aisle, poufed, sun-glassed, lipsticked and strutting. Yes! Fur coats rule! A young woman glared at my coat and snarled, “How many dozens of leopards had to be killed to make that coat?” “Dozens?” I gasped. “Dozens!” Oh, well, it looked so good she thought it was real. I turned into the next booth. The smiling

Women’s liberation was a big story of the 1970s, and Lilli Ann kept up with the new woman with this pants suit. Frazier is always amazed by what she finds in the pockets of vintage clothing. Mints, lots of tissues, and once this tribute to Lilli Ann clothing designer Billie Jeanne Raboff. The former owner had typed up the obituary from a 1962 issue of Harper’s Bazaar and tucked it in a pocket so that the new owner could share her appreciation of the talent that had brought her such a beautiful piece of clothing. According to Dayton’s Department Store, a history of the famous Minneapolis store by Mary Firestone, Minneapolis was the fashion center of the northwest in the 1940s. The eighth-floor of Dayton’s played host to nearly daily fashion shows. Though this hat (above & below) wasn’t designed by Dayton’s, the label makes clear it was sold there.

A warm fur hat, outside and in, perfect for Minnesota weather. These days, fashionistas think twice about adding fur to their wardrobe. But for much of human history, fur and leather were popular materials in apparel. This mink cap has a pillbox design that would have fit in well with the Jackie Kennedy era.

thinking of Jackie but of Grandma Carrie Wallace. Carrie Wallace was a vision when she strolled her Minneapolis neighborhood on Snelling Avenue. She lived there most of her

90-plus years. But she had a ready-to-wear side too. A true adventurer, Wallace took children out of the city and into nature through her work at the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center. She taught generations how to camp, build fires, swim and fish, including her

granddaughter. “My grandma could get down and dirty at camp. But then she’d throw on a dress and become a gorgeous lady,” said Frazier, whose mother died when Frazier was nineteen, making Grandma Wallace an even stronger figure in her life.

By the end of the 1960s, youth were growing their hair and beards and diving into thrift stores and international markets to create the hippie look. The earlier part of the decade, represented by this Lilli Ann set, feels like it could have come from another decade altogether. It emphasizes clean lines, simple patterns, and coordinated ensembles.

At Frazier’s house, only blocks from where Grandma lived, she keeps clothing that belonged to the fashionable women in her family. Necklaces festoon the dresser like they did at Grandma’s house when Frazier was a little girl playing dress up. Just as Carrie

Sweaters with thick turtlenecks and loud stripes were not unusual in the 1980s, nor were turned up collars, untucked shirts, inside-out shirts, and inside-out tops worn backwards. Larissa Bailey models this pullover from the Me Decade.
