An afternoon’s worth of entertainment by Linda Simpkins What is an afternoon with Mark Moran worth? A lot, particularly if you are into collecting stories and like a good performance. Moran, an appraiser for hire, travels in circuits. In May, he hit ten Great River Regional Libraries in five days, and he is slated to appear at six more in September. He landed at Sauk Centre, Minnesota’s Bryant Library on a Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m., attracting a fluid crowd of fans who had seen him on Antiques Roadshow and wanted him to appraise a family heirloom or a garage

sale find. The author of 27 books on antiques, Moran fielded a wide range of objects, from clocks to clippers, giving each participant and item his individual attention, complete with a peek at liveauctioneers.com to determine how much an exact replica or similar item has been selling for recently. A big computer screen faced the audience, enabling everybody to join in the search as a parade of vases or toys or paintings marched up the monitor in rows.

(Photo by Sharon Cekada, Appleton Post Crescent) Jim Kazlaukas brought in a childhood favorite book, The Animal World, copyright 1886, boasting “500 Illustrations,” given and signed by Miss Mae Vivian Buck, a neighbor in Little Falls, Minn., who was related to author Pearl S. Buck. Moran noted: “It is full of black and white illustrations. Some are rather chilling, showing animals killing and eating each other. This was intended for a young boy to read through and dream about going on safari.” Moran recommended researching the current price of books Doris Scott brought in a pair of clippers. “My dad on the free website used to cut my hair with one of these. ‘Sit still!’” abebooks.com Although Moran said, remembering, “What is most he feels prices there are important about this is the protective tin cover. a bit high, detailed The fact that it is still with the shears is amazing. descriptions of each book’s condition make its information accurate and valuable. He found a similar This is a farmer’s clipping machine. I think the book from the same era and by the same author titled The Kingdom of Nature listed for $75. “Yours is cover is worth more than the clipper. The cover is much better--the cover is better, the condition better, the toning of the pages, the spine. I think it is just worth $10, but the clipper is worth $2.” a fabulous book in really good shape.” (Photos by Linda Simpkins unless otherwise noted)

In 1976, Christa Johnson’s second grade teacher gave her this yarn doll, which Moran identified as an example of late 20th century folk art. “Of all the dolls that have come into my program, yarn dolls are rare,” he said, adding that knitting magazines used to carry patterns for them. Despite its rarity, Moran said, “I think it has more sentimental value than anything. If you saw it in an antique shop, I think it would be about $10.”

Mark Moran

Cont. from page 1 Kim Finken and Barb Anderson each brought works of art that turned out to be photomechanical prints. Moran called Finken’s a good quality Maxwell Parrish knock-off that might bring $100 retail. Barb Anderson said her husband’s aunt had bought the floral print in the early 1940s. “She might have bought it in 1941, but it might have been framed in 1961,” Moran said. “These fabric spacers were all the rage in the 1960s.” He valued it at $50.

Moran brought his knowledge of antiques, respect for every item and individual, and his beneficent sense of humor, and the participants brought stories; intogether, they made for priceless entertainment. Kim Finken arrived

with a print of a painting Moran iden-tified as “this wonder-fully romantic image” done in the style of Maxwell

Mark Moran

Cont. on page 4

Clara Post brought in a picture that had been her father-in-law’s. The “very famous, very copied image,” Moran said, “was an allegorical picture to say, ‘Come to Jesus for safety and salvation.’” The theme is the lost sheep, and in the background stands a crucifix and the faint figure of a woma reaching toward it. Although Moran said it would look lovely reframed, it is a tough sell today “because of its religious association.” Christian themes simply do not sell as well today as they once did. Framed, it might bring $100. But unframed, $20 might be the best she could hope for.

“My mother gave it to me when she was 84,” said Arlene Welle of this pitcher decorated with monkeys mounted in high profile, “and she got it from an aunt who was 84.” Moran said the style, sumida gawa, comes from Japan and goes back thousands of years; the piece itself dates to the early 20th century. Enlisting the help of liveauctioneers.com to determine the current value, Moran found a set with five mugs online that sold in January for $400. A lidded single entry went for $500. Sarah Fletcher held up a cup and saucer from a set of six. At home she has a matching tea pot, sugar and creamer. Moran dated the set to 1949, explaining, “Sets like this one were incredibly popular with G.I.s coming back from World War II and Korea.” Made of lithopane, a very thin, translucent porcelain, the cup contained an etched image of a geisha that is not easily seen without backlighting. “People owned these for years and years and never realized there was a geisha looking at them from the bottom,” he said. The sets quickly became strictly decorative “because they can’t take the heat of a real cup of coffee.” He found a set exactly like it online that sold for $70 in 2014. Its loss of function accounted for its low value, he said. “That is what happens when something goes from being utilitarian to being a decorative object.”

Parrish. Back in the 20th century, Finken’s father had owned Diamond Point, a popular restaurant ten miles outside of Sauk Centre on Birch Lake. When he first bought the place, he had come upon this image of a young woman lounging under a tree against a big sky in a storeroom

and had wanted to throw it out, but his wife vetoed the idea. After Finken’s mom died, she and her dad struck a deal. “I asked dad if I could have it. He said I’d have to clean his house for a year for it.” As it turns out, Kim and her mom can be given credit for their appreciation of art. An original Maxwell Parrish in good condi-

Moran doesn’t see these every day. “Pennyslots like this are not very common,” he said. The 1920s cigarette dispenser, which had belonged to Barb Anderson’s grandfather-in-law, is in good though not excellent, original condition. “Nickleslots, dimeslots, and quarterslots came in later,” Moran said. He found a machine with the same lady logo online that sold for $325. Given the wear and tear on the cast aluminum machine, by comparison Moran placed this one at $225.

Moran thought this knitting bear given to Leah Vornbrock by her aunt was either Japanese or German in origin. “She’s got hard plastic hands,” he noted. “It is a wonderful little toy.” Online, Moran found four toys of similar material and size selling for $200 as a set. “That makes that a $50 knitting bear,” he concluded.

Many among the many: A grandfather’s kitchen clock, inherited from a grandfather; a pair of elephant salt-and-pepper shakers marked, “Made in occupied Japan”; a handwritten, firsthand account of a train robbery; a lamp Moran said “looks really good from a distance,” but “has 14 styles thrown

Helen Miller handed Moran a little feast for the eyes. He summarized, noting “a wonderful footed bowl with gilt trim on the edge, a little crown there; it says ‘Austria,’ has an iridescent finish, and is solid.” Moran said it had been sold with smaller bowls as part of a set about 1910. “You Paid $7 for it. I think if you wanted to sell it today, you could double your money,” he said with a touch of gentle humor.

Moran said he sees a slag glass lamp--named for the swirl of color in the glass, hugely popular early in the 20th century--at almost every event he does, but that did not dampen his enthusiasm for this piece. He called it “a beautiful lamp in beautiful condition.” Tiffany did not make slag glass lamps, but the shade has fragile curved panels that are impossible to replace. Swirls of ivory, carmel, yellow, and brown are most common. Its heavy bronze base has a tulip motif. The Art Deco lamp with a Renaissance revival form shade was produced sometime in the 1920s. Because the glass cannot stand much heat, Moran recommended using no higher than a 40-watt light bulb. After comparing online, he sited $300 as a fair price.

The most important thing when it comes to costume jewelry is the mark. Miriam Haskell is one of the best. The clip-back earrings and brooch would have been part of a set called a suite or a parure and would have included a necklace. The suite, Moran estimated, would be worth $80.

Sue Beuning brought in costume jewelry Moran dubbed ‘Eisenberg Ice,’ so named for their maker, Eisenberg & Kramer, and for their rhinestones. “That’s some good ice,” he quipped. He found a pair of earrings online that sold for around $180. The pieces Beuning brought in were orphans, not a set, making them somewhat less valuable. “In the box you have $100,” Moran estimated.

Linda Simpkins is editor of the Old Times.

Judy Waldvogel’s great-great grandmother received this unmarked elk creamer as a wedding gift. Moran said that 100 years ago, it was probably sold as part of a large matching set. Online he found examples marked Royal Bayreuth, a pottery in Germany.

The Old Times

Hunting antiques--the most dangerous game

by Joan Sween A long-time mixedmedia artist and collector in our town was having a warehouse sale. The Man I Married and I had been eagerly waiting for it to happen. When we got to the sale, we were temporarily stymied because the aisles were too narrow to accommodate my walker. (Recent leg surgery had me dependent on a walker for a few weeks.) “No problem,” said TMIM, “we just have to worry about you tipping over.” Parking the walker outside the door, we proceeded up an aisle with me wobbling in front, and TMIM tight behind me, ready to catch me if I fell. As we progressed, TMIM began patting my derriere in a flirtatious manner. “Cut that out and pay attention to business,” I said. He didn’t stop patting. “Will you stop that?” I said, turning to frown at him face-toface. “You’re not my

husband!” I gasped. “You’re not my wife!” the man behind me stammered. “So get your hands off me!” I said. “Oh, yeah, sorry, sorry, sorry,” the man said. He made a detour around me and went pushing off through the crowd, calling, “Cheryl! Cheryl!” TMIM pushed through the crowd to me. “Sorry, I wasn’t

here,” he said. “I got blocked behind Zach Line.” “Zach Line,” I said, “is a great big Vikings fullback.” “She sure fooled me,” TMIM said, pointing to a woman with biceps the size of hams. “I’ve got bruises the size of footballs!” Moving along, we came to a 20-foot long table filled with vintage salt and pepper shakers. Underneath the table were 20 feet of bins with more salt and pepper shakers. I found a hand shape in one of the bins. “Look around,” I said. There’s got to be a mate to this hand somewhere. TMIM bent over and gently moved the piles of shakers in the first bin. Someone bumped into him from behind, shoving his forehead into the table edge. TMIM looked grumpy but he gamely bent over to check out the next bin. Again he was shoved into the table edge by a buffet on the rear. Still trying to please me, he bent to the third bin and his

fundament and forehead took another hit. Dabbing at his bleeding forehead with a tissue, he said, “How badly do you want that matching shaker? “Not badly at all,” I said. “Dumb idea. Heh, heh, heh. I’ll bet just one will be more interesting. What was I thinking?” “Here’s a pretty paperweight,” I said, picking up a glass ball with what looked like a plume of grass in the middle. I handed it to TMIM to carry. “Here’s another one identical to it,” he said, picking it up, “now you have two.” “Here’s another,” I said. “And another.” “Hey, here are two more over here,” TMIM said. The clever sellers had salted the tables with grass plume paperweights. I was hooked. Don’t worry about it, I thought to myself, they’re only $2 each. We ended up picking up 36 grass plume paperweights. TMIM had been loading them in a box

Dealer’s Choice

By Joan Sween and began to lug it to the checkout counter to join a pile we had growing. Just then someone accidentally ran into TMIM’s box, driving the corners into his shins. He whimpered, but kept on going. Our last stop was at a metal shelf unit loaded with 5-pound sacks of jumbo-sized marbles. I loaded TMIM up with all the sacks he could hold, carelessly smashing his thumb between sacks. “There are more,” I said.” “I know,” he said. “Stay here. Hang on to something. Don’t tip over. I’ll be right back.”

After another marble trip, he supported me to the front door to wait with my walker while he paid our total. “So what did we come to?” I asked. “Thirty-nine,” he said. I was confused. “Dollars?” “Bruises.” © 2016 Joan Sween
