by Britt Aamodt MINNEAPOLIS– In June 1948, Columbia Records made history. At a New York City press conference, the company unveiled the long-playing record. It wasn’t as if vinyl records, running at 33-1/3 revolutions per minute, hadn’t been around in the 1930s. But the Great Depression and World War II got in the way of innovation.

People bring their records to Hymie’s to sell. They might be downsizing, getting divorced or just cleaning closets. Hoenack says going through a record collection is like “reading an autobiography, if the person has been collecting a long time.” (Photos by Britt Aamodt unless otherwise noted)

One of the advantages vinyl records have over their digital counterparts is their tactile nature. You can’t beat 12-inch cover art like the iconic cover for the Rolling Stones’ “Some Girls” album.

With the post-war economy booming, Columbia’s research and development labs revisited the idea of long-playing records to replace 78s, which were made of shellac and, on a 12-inch disc, could only hold five minutes of music per side.

Columbia’s 1948 press conference inaugurated the industry conversion to 33-1/3 vinyl records. Not to be outdone, rival RCA Records responded with the launch of the vinyl single, the socalled 45 because it spun at 45 rpm. Minneapolis, In you can collect shellac or vinyl, but you’ll

have to go to different shops. Vintage Music Company on 38th Street specializes in 78s, music cylinders, and the machines that play them. Meanwhile, Hymie’s Vintage Music on Lake Street supplies vinyl junkies with LPs, 45s, EPs, test pressings, bootlegs, picture discs, promos,

and even a few 8-track tapes. And the folks who staff the register and cherry pick private record collections for the racks are the owners. Laura and Dave Hoenack have run the shop, which Rolling Stone magazine

Minneapolis label Soma Records released the Trashmen’s “Surfin’ Bird” in 1963. The single jumped from the local scene to Billboard’s Hot 100.

Hymie’s Hoenack counts Bonnie Raitt’s debut, self-titled album as a favorite listen. It doesn’t hurt that the album, released in 1971, was recorded near Minnetonka, Minn., with help from local folk and blues musicians Dave “Snaker” Ray, Willie Murphy, and John Beach.

Vinyl not only comes in different speeds, but also in different colors and shapes. This Bruce Springsteen album is pretty tame in gold vinyl. Other artists have seen their albums splashed with confetti color. Vinyl has been shaped into bananas, scorpions, police badges, and the Rolling Stones’ “Tongue and Lip” design.

Rick Shefchik devoted an entire book— ”Everybody’s Heard about the Bird”—to that song and the 1960s Minnesota rock-n-roll scene that gave it birth. “Surfin’ Bird” was an exception to the rule. The drawback of the old indie labels was that they didn’t have the distribution networks of major labels. Much local vinyl never made it out of the Midwest. But that rarity is what makes these discs so collectible.

Minneapolis psychedelic group C.A. Quintet sold less than 1000 copies of its 1968 album “Trip Thru Hell.” Nowadays the original LP goes for big bucks, when you can find it. “It’s come through the shop three or four times in six years. That’s one that sells online for thousands of dollars,” said Laura. The 21st-century music industry is in turmoil. Digital downloads have replaced CDs. Listeners seem

Rehab can be profitable--but sneaky by Joan Sween Well, there I was in the rehabilitation center, and plenty grouchy about it. I had a damaged leg and had to learn how to walk again. The Man I Married said, with a straight face, “It’s lucky you still have your ability to talk.”

St. Cloud Area Map

07-30-15

Over the next few days, many friends visited, each one bringing a small silver overlay piece as a get-well present.

Puzzled, I finally asked a writer friend, “Where are you gals finding these neat items?” “Oh, I shouldn’t reveal our secret, but a few miles north of here, there’s an antique mall with a whole case of silver overlay.”

GOOD CREEPING GRIEF! Unaware of my antiques side of life, my friends were buying my silver overlay pieces in the mall and giving them back to me as presents! Was this fraud? Would the IRS be looking for me? I called the mall and had all the remaining silver overlay boxed and put away. Then I turned to box up all the pretty little pieces that were on display on my bedside table. They weren’t there! I screeched for help. “Those silver overlay items, what happened to them?” “Oh, those dinky little glass jobbies?” Cindy, the aide, looked confused and said, “I picked them all up and put them in the storage cabinet where we keep odd vases.” “Find them!” I cried. “We’ve got to find them! They’re worth a lot of money and they aren’t mine.

Or, rather, they are mine. Or maybe now they are owned by the IRS fraud division!” Cindy leaped to my aid, speeding my wheelchair down the hall so fast the wheels smoked. “There they are!” she exclaimed when we reached the storage room. “Yes!” I exclaimed with joy. “No!” I sobbed when I took a second look. “There are only six here. There should be eleven.” “Some of the ladies may have taken a few,” said Cindy. So, one by one, we searched for the residents with silver overlay pieces, explaining that they weren’t mine. I didn’t mention they might belong to the IRS. Four of the ladies graciously returned the little silver decorated pieces. The fifth lady was not about to budge. “They were left for anyone in the storeroom,” she huffed. “This one is mine.” I tried pleading-

my room, I asked TMIM if he thought I would go to jail. “Certainly not,” he said, “you haven’t done anything wrong.” “But you have invented a great marketing plan if you could just manage to break a leg every three months or so.”

Joan Sween, a former English teacher and dramaturge, is an antiques dealer in southeastern Minnesota who has written three books: Nice Girls Don’t Bite, a paranormal mystery featuring two Minnesota Nice antiques dealers; a collection of her columns titled Dealer’s Choice; and Deathblow: The Encore Killer Always Returns. She is also an accomplished playwright whose works include the drama, The First Woman, referring to Mary Surratt, who became the first woman executed by the U.S. government after being convicted of aiding in President Lincoln’s assassination.

with no luck. I tried fear. “If you don’t give that piece of silver overlay back, the IRS will come and arrest you.” “Pooh! Let them try!” she said. “When the Feds arrest you, they print your name and address in the paper.” “Hah!” she snorted, “Let ’em come!” “And they print your age.” I added. “My age,” she gulped. “My age? Well, perhaps I don’t need this after all,” she said, shoving the final silver overlay piece at me. Later, cowering in

My life is a little strange in that I am both a working writer and an enthusiastic antiques dealer, and my friends from each pursuit don’t cross over and are rarely aware of my other work. Shortly after moving into the rehab center, a writer friend of mine came to visit and brought a little getwell present- a darling little silver overlay cruet. In the mall, I had a showcase featuring a large variety of silver overlay items. I had a number of duplicates and had brought them home to gleam in the sunlight- and that’s how my writer friend

had gotten the idea that I collected them. The cruet was sweet, but looked a little familiar. Over the next few days, many friends visited, each one bringing a small silver overlay piece as a getwell present.

Loft celebrates 40 years at 50th & Xerxes --PRESS RELEASE MINNEAPOLIS-The Loft Antiques, located on the corner of 50th Street and Xerxes in Minneapolis, will be celebrating 40 years of business with a storewide sale, refreshments and door prizes from Friday, April 29 through Sunday, May

1. (20 percent off). In the mid 1970s, a handful of women who loved antiquing rented space in an upper level, former apartment just across the street from the Loft’s current location. Each room had a distinct feel of kitchen, either a bathroom, bedroom, or

main room. The women capitalized on the charm and filled the spaces with dressers, tables and other rare finds. New merchandise was brought up steep, narrow stairs. Not an easy job! They shared workdays, divided expenses, and rented out space by the room.

The current crew at the Loft is celebrating 40 years at the corner of 50th Street and Xerxes in Minneapolis.

Soon the Loft business model was born, the name befitting the little store perched above the streets below. Business was bustling, but hauling merchandise up the stairs was grueling. When the Loft’s current space came up for rent, the five brave dealers took a deep breath and a leap of faith and rented all

dealers, a countertop, and fresh paint, the new Loft was open for business. Today, the Loft is a cornerstone of the neighborhood, with 15 dealers, including three of the original members. The Loft is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.

by Donald-Brian Johnson The Golden Age of Radio began in the 1930s, reached its zenith (pun intended) in the 1940s, then faded out for good in the late 1950s. The voices heard over the airwaves became as familiar as the voices of immediate family. In fact, radio folk were family, invited into America’s living rooms to stay a spell. Unlike guests who overstay their welcome, they then disappeared, only to return a week later, same time, same station.

Neukom buys shop at Douglas & Hennepin --PRESS RELEASE MINNEAPOLIS— Antiques Bel Air has a new owner and a new name. On January 1, Tom Neukom bought the shop from Dorothea Calabrese, who founded the shop in September 2010 and four years later moved it from Hopkins to the outskirts of downtown Minneapolis. The shop, now Antiques Bel Air – Lowry Hill, is located at the corner of Douglas and Hennepin, one block south of the Walker Art Center in the Lowry Hill neighborhood. The door to the shop is nestled in the corner of an historic, 102-yearold brick apartment

The shop’s long history suits Neukom, who got interested in historic preservation 40 years ago in the south. Along the way, he started collecting European glassware, sterling silver, and higher end collectibles. By the time the major hotel company he worked for transferred him to the Minneapolis area 20 years ago, he was moonlighting as a dealer in fine antiques and rented space in

building. Antiques Bel Air – Lowry Hill continues a long tradition; two other antiques shops have preceded it in this location, filling its 1200 square feet with an untold number and variety of antiques for a total of 80 years.

Bob Johnson, and Reed Malom. Asked to characterize the shop, Neukom said he would quote his clients: “They say, ‘This is like a wonderful, old fashioned antique shop.’” He adds that dealers display sterling silver, vintage jewelry, oil paintings, period light fixtures--a complete variety, from the 17th century to Art Deco to rustic American to Mid Century Modern.
