1972 Cover

When Randolph E. Haugan joined Augsburg Publishing House in Minneapolis in 1924, he began to dream of a Christmas annual devoted to the celebration of the Christmas miracle through stories, music, and art.

Haugan had fond memories of his childhood Christmases back in Wisconsin. Being the son of a Norwegian Lutheran pastor, Christmas for him was a reverent celebration. Believing the mystery and joy of the ancient story of Christmas should be retold each year; his new annual would focus on the religious significance of Christmas.

The Old Times

The first and last issues of the Christmas Annual, 1931 and 1997. The 1931 issue is a difficult Annual to locate for collectors today.

Christmas

Cont. from page 1

The origins of worldwide Christmas customs, from the familiar to the strange, where described in detail so we here in America would have a better understanding of where our Christmas traditions and customs originated.

Christmas annual had a printing of 5,000 copies. The new venture was not successful financially, and a large quantity of that first issue was left unpurchased. But, Mr. Haugan did not give up. Year by year the

publication became more popular as it became an annual tradition in many homes and a delightfully new discovery in many others. Readers often wrote to Augsburg Press complimenting them on the publication of the annual. The retail giant J. C. Penny

wrote of the annual in 1934, “If all the issues are as fine as that for 1934, you may be successful in establishing the custom in the country.” Franklin D. Roosevelt also wrote praising the annual in the 1940s,

Not only the illustrations inside of each annual, but also the cover illustrations, show us our changing artistic fashions and trends of the time period of the Annual’s publication. The covers from the 1930s (left) show a distinct Art Deco influence while the covers for the 1940s (1943, right) have a peaceful feeling to them in a time of world war.

Often the Annuals would contain information on Christmas collectibles that were hot at the time. In the early 1980s it was Christmas spoons.

Augsburg Publishing House, having edited the annual for 40 years. He would continue for 10 more years to edit the Christmas Annual from retirement. For those 50 continuous years, Mr. Haugan made it his mission to help spread the message of the Christmas miracle to the world. Many families looked forward to reading the new annual, and old annuals became treasured heirlooms to be saved and brought

out again each year to have favorite stories or articles reread time and again. Countless gatherings for holiday evenings and Christmas dinners were started off with the reading of the Gospel passages of Christ’s birth from the opening pages of the annual. Now, in the age of video games, computers, and satellite TV, many traditions from years gone by have fallen away. Even the award winning

In the late 1980s the hot collectible was Danish Christmas plates, familiar to every antiques shop and gift store employee. Other Christmas collectibles were covered, too, including Christmas seals and U.S. as well as worldwide Christmas postage stamps.

Augsburg Christmas Annual fell out of popularity, and with a continuing decline in sales, Augsburg discontinued publication of the Christmas Annual with the last issue rolling off the press in 1997. by Jim Billings An impressive exhibition of oil paintings by Eugène Delacroix (1798 – 1863), along with works of contemporaries who influenced him and those whom he influenced, are assembled through January 10, 2016 at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Patrick Noon, Elizabeth MacMillan Chair of Paintings, curated this exhibition. Eugène Delacroix, from Paris, was a leader of the Romantic School of visual art. As in literature of its day, Romanticism features emotion and spontaneity over the rational. Feelings of drama, heroism, terror, awe, nature as context, horror--like 19th century European opera, involved viewers

emotionally through drama and violence. The exhibition explores Delacroix’s contributions to changing art conventions. He used color dynamics to energize painting. Perhaps the show’s flagship work. This painting comprises dualities: pale, solid ancient building against present-moment, outof-control mob (security v. danger, bright colors vs. pale, moving vs. still, present/ ephemeral vs. timeless, viewer vs. participant)

This is a verbatim copy of a Delacroix painting of 1841 now in the Louvre. The composition is strongly influenced by the Convulsionists, 1838. A wedding ceremony with music, dance, people in motion. meticulous, visually accurate strokes of classical painting. This lifts painting’s energy, taking the viewer away from detail and into feeling, from still illustration into painting as a lively event. Delacroix also brought more active viewer involvement into painting through narrative and cleaver devices. Rembrandt had mastered ways of manipulating the viewer’s gaze, thereby unfolding the narrative. However, Delacroix guides the viewer’s

Opera, from Mozart’s Abduction of the Seraglio (1782) to Verdi’s La Traviata, Aida, and others influenced Delacroix, as well as literature from von Goethe to Sir Walter Scott. December 2015 Although brought into the painting’s drama, nevertheless, Delacroix’s viewer was still an outsider. Convulsionists and various battles were dangerous; Delacroix’s Jewish wedding party was for invitees only (shoes off); others look on from the balcony. The harem scenes from other Delacroix paintings were most safely left to voyeurs. Fuller viewer participation in painting remained for Warhol’s Factory and Happenings of the 1960s. Delacroix stretched painting’s canon. He stretched the tools and freedoms for artists and viewers, and his legacy lives in Cezanne, Courbet, Bazille, Renoir, Gaugin, and Redon. Yet perhaps it is best manifested through van Gogh. Although van Gogh never met Delacroix, he seemed to get it: Palette, dualities, brush stroke, leading viewers gently.

The Old Times Eugène Delacroix. The Death of Sardanapalus [reduced replica], 1846. Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia. The Henry P. McIlhenny Collection in memory of Frances P. McIlhenny. Writhing depiction of evil; the eye is led upward to the left to Sardanapalus, a King of ancient Assyria. According to legend, the king lived a life of debauchery and dies in an orgy of destruction. The painting evokes a voyeuristic scene similar to harem scenes popular after Delacroix’s work.

Appraising Art

Cont. from page 15

Art needs freedom and structure, yin and yang Chinese would say. Delacroix masters this through contrasts. His principle contrast is between humans and nature, a duality dear to the Romantics. Dualities from complementary colors and composition

Let There Be Light Antiques

are well illustrated in Convulsionists of Tangier (1838). Perhaps the most powerful Delacroix in the exhibition, it places a pale, ancient stone building in front of which interjects a frenetic mob. The brightly dressed mob ambles leftward. The buildings above, pale and rectilinear, are draped with bright textiles and curious spectators. The buildings stand as they have for centuries, solid and silent. In contrast, the parade is momentary and in present time. The viewer is brought into the contrast from the position and safety of present time and of being outside the frame.
