Clocks tell brothers’ story

Joseph and Frank Bily with one of their favorite creations, the Village Blacksmith clock. The idea for the clock came from a Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem of the same name. One verse tells of “children coming home from school” who “look in at the open door,” as we do here.

Joe Bily was the engineer who created the design for each clock and figured out how the parts would fit together. His brother Frank took the plans and executed them in hand-carved and sawed pieces, which Joe would then assemble. (Photos courtesy of the Bily Clocks Museum)

by Britt Aamodt SPILLVILLE, IOWA--The Bily brothers, Frank and Joseph, grew up on a farm outside Spillville, Iowa. The town was known for its Czech population and an 1893 visit by renowned Czech composer Antonin Dvorak. By the time the brothers died, however, Spillville was also known for their clocks. Every year, thousands make the trek to the Bily Clocks Museum to encounter their awe-inspiring timepieces. They boast intricate fretwork, carvings, moveable The mammoth clocks crowd the walls of the museum. Originally, the

brothers engineered their clocks to chime on the hour. But in a museum setting the noise was too much. So they installed chords that can be pulled to bring the music and moving figures to life.

Frank and Joseph where young men working a 128-acre farm in rural Iowa when the idea to carve and assemble clocks came to them. Neither had any training, but that didn’t stop them from producing the Creation Clock (1913), their first and a masterpiece of delicate fretwork and biblical symbology.

The story began in 1913, when a Norwegian neighbor asked Frank and Joe to insert a mechanism in the clock he’d carved. They did and discovered a project that suited them—and an appreciative audience right at home. “They had a disabled brother,

The Old Times

Maybe I’d do better writing cookbooks by Joan Sween Many may not know it, but I write other types of fiction besides columns; I have two novels, 20 plays and some short stories to my credit. Much of my work has been done with a weekly writers group on Tuesdays containing By Joan Sween three other writers-Carol, Monica and Debbie. We each read the previous week, and others offer what we have written the

suggestions for improvement. My fellow writers are tough though; no participle is allowed to dangle; no compound noun is left without a hyphen; no negative sneaks in doubling down; all pronouns have previous referents; and nothing-absolutely nothing--is allowed to exist without an explanation or a back story. They are very serious writers.

Having just finished a play featuring a ghost who was still peeved about the final days of his life and determined to take his ire out on all who still had a pulse, I was not inclined to write anything grim for my next effort. When it came my turn to present, I said to the others, “I’m beginning a humorous novel about a joke writer for a famous comedian. The book begins with him telling a joke.” I began to read: A bear walked into an antiques shop- “How did he do that? Bears can’t turn knobs.” Monica. I revised the beginning. As the automatic door swished open, a bear walked into an antiques shop--. “How did he walk in? Upright or on all fours?” Carol. I tweaked it again. As the automatic door swished open, a bear walked upright into an

As the automatic door swished open, a bear who lived nearby and didn’t need a car, walked upright into an antiques shop--. “The bear lived nearby? What sort of neighborhood was it?” Monica. As the automatic door swished open, a lady bear wearing a designer pant suit with pockets that could hold car keys if she had driven, but who lived nearby in a mixed ethnic neighborhood and didn’t need a car, walked upright into an antiques shop--. “A designer pant suit? Where did she get it? No shops sell bear sizes. I mean, Lulu Richardson had to wear nothing but loose shifts until she lost all that weight.” Debbie. The world changed rapidly in the Bily brothers’ lifetimes. They were born in an age of horse-drawn carriages. By the time they died in the 1960s, they had seen the advent of automobiles and airplanes. The theme of transportation driven by technology is evident in their History of Travel clock.

The Old Times

Frank Bily, the brother whose hands carved the designs on all their clocks, stands in front of the American Pioneer clock, which features 57 panels depicting the life and work of the pioneer.

Frank and Joe’s younger sister Anna ran the clock tours at the Bily farm. The brothers planned to leave her the collection so she’d have an income. When she died suddenly in 1943, Frank and Joe wanted to burn the clocks. Only a neighbor’s quick work stopped them.

The Paradise clock hearkens back to the biblical stories of creation and the Garden of Eden.

The brick building was already a tourist landmark as the temporary home of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, who lived there with his family in 1893. trans-Atlantic flight, they produced the Lindbergh clock. The body, made from black walnut, mimics the shape of his plane and encloses a bust of the famed Minnesota-born pilot. The brothers’

interest in history found expression in the American Pioneer History clock. It was a labor of love, which took four years to complete and stood over eight feet. Fiftyseven bas-relief panels illustrate individuals (Sacajawea), symbols (the Liberty Bell) and historical trends

(frontier settlers on a homestead and the first plowing and mining). Eventually, Frank and Joe had to move the collection to an outbuilding. Younger sister Anna collected the money and gave tours.
