by Julie Holmquist MINNEAPOLIS--“Oh, we love THE HALLS OF IVY that surround us here today,/And we will not forget tho’ we be far, far away.” For those interested in the halls of ivy at the University of Minnesota (UMN), Preserve Minneapolis’s Old Campus Walking Tour gave participants a chance to learn some architectural history while strolling through older sections of the Minneapolis campus. Adjunct faculty in preservation Bob Mack began the summer tour on the historic Knoll, site of the East Bank’s oldest buildings, which is located northwest of Northro.p Auditorium The 1896 armory, designed by Charles Aldrich, is now used by the Reserve Officer Training Corps.

The now officially designated Old Campus Historic District was part of that plan. Mack pointed out that this district displays an eclectic mix of architectural styles designed within about fifteen years. Three buildings in particular— Eddy Hall (1886), Pillsbury Hall (1889), and Burton Hall (1894)—were all influenced by architect LeRoy Buffington, but ended up in three different styles: Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque, and Classical Revival, respectively. After Old Main burnt down in 1904, landscape architect Warren Manning commissioned Clarence Johnston, Sr., to replace it with Folwell Hall in the Collegiate Gothic style. The Old Times

It isn’t a crime; it’s just a senior moment

by Joan Sween The Man I Married is a treasure. He takes out the garbage, brings home presents, gives me compliments, is nice to my friends, sews on his own buttons; he’s even sweetly long-suffering about the cats. That last item should get him nominated for sainthood, because TMIM is a dog man. He dreams of coming home from work and finding a furry body leaping with joy at his return, drooling with delight on the toes of his shoes, and fetching a ball for a game of toss. What he gets is two slant-eyed stares that

seem to say, “Oh. Were you gone somewhere?” a gakked hairball on his shoes, and half a chipmunk dropped into his lunch bucket. But still, he gives the felines a kind word and a scratch behind the ears as he sighs and dreams of a dog. His saintly self had to work on the day of the gigantic antique show in town, so I was on my own. I picked up my large bright red canvas shopping bag and took off. I had barely gone halfway down the first aisle when I hit a booth full of Mexican silver jewelry laid out in rows and rows of polished beauty. My eye was caught by a stunning

pair of vintage Federico Jimenez sterling silver and turquoise cluster earrings. I couldn’t resist. I clipped them on and looked around for a mirror. I went the full length of the booth, looking for a mirror and admiring all the other beautiful pieces of silver jewelry. At the end, I paused, did a reality check, sighed, and reluctantly moved on. There was no way I

could afford any of the lovely pieces. Some booths later, I spotted an elegant snakeskin card carrier. It was small, flat and sprang open at the touch of a latch, just like a vintage cigarette case. It had a flange to hold business cards on one side and a small notebook with tiny pen By Joan Sween on the other side. I slipped it into my hip fit. It did; easily. I tried 6-16-09 to see if it would pocket it in my breast pocket.
