by Les Broich HANLEY FALLS, MINN.—Don’t expect to find falls in Hanley Falls, Minn. The town was originally named Hanley, after an employee of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad. The name’s similarity to Hawley, Minn., led to mail deliveries to the wrong towns. The problem was solved in 1886 when Hanley was renamed Hanley Falls. The postal officials just didn’t care that there were no falls in Hanley. What can be found in Hanley Falls, Minn., is the Minnesota Machinery Museum and a glorious celebration of the town’s agricultural history at its annual Pioneer Power Good Old Days and Thresher Show in August.

“The museum opened in 1980,” said museum director Laurie Johnson, “to help people understand the earlier times in agriculture, including life on the farms and in the rural communities that grew among them.” The five structures that comprise the museum total 26,000 square feet. “We have the state’s largest collection of agricultural equipment and exhibits,” Johnson said. “With the participaRichard Emch, 81, has been pulling tractors since tion of the community,” 1956. Last year Emch was going to pull in the 6000 Johnson explained, pound class, but a modification he made to his tractor changing how it hooked to the grabber got him disqualified. He opted not to enter the ‘open’ class. “I decided to sit this one out.”

Threshing (pronounced “thrashing”) separates the wheat from the chaff.

This 1910 postcard advertising a steam engine and steel separator was sent to the author’s maternal grandfather in Corona, S. D.

The harness shop was a valued presence in a rural community. This Singer Sewing Machine was used by Jeremiah Smith and Bryan Smith for repairing harnesses and other leather objects. The machine was last used around 1940.

The Buckeye Mower and Reaper was a one-horse mower manufactured by Adriance, Platt & Company of New York. An ad for the implement points out that a one-horse mower is not as troublesome to manage as a team of horses and states, “Our Mowers for one horse are much used on golf courses and large lawns, cutting closely the short soft grass and giving the same satisfaction that they give in a hay field.” D. L. Houseman exhibited in one of the buildings on the Minnesota Machinery Museum grounds. He attracted visitors with his “Barns Are Noble” sign and paintings of barns and landscapes.

sizes of tractors. Farmers had another reason to welcome the emergence of gasolinepowered engines. Smaller engines, either stationary or mounted on iron-wheeled wagons, could be used to power a variety of implements to make many jobs a lot easier. A well-attended

In a tractor pull, the tractors pull a weight transfer sled. A weight is linked with gears to the sled’s wheels. As it is pulled down the track, the weight is transferred from the rear axles towards the front of the sled. In front of the rear wheels is a metal plate called a pan. As the weight moves forward over the pan, resistance builds, so the further the sled is pulled, the harder it gets.

In the tractor pull, getting to the end of the course is known as a “full pull.” If more than one entrant completes the course, more weight is added to the sled, and the winner is the one who pulls the sled the longest.

This 1914 J. I. Case steam engine is used for the saw mill demonstration during the Pioneer Power Good Old Days & Thresher Show held annually at the Minnesota Machinery Museum in Hanley Falls, Minn. The belt runs 75 feet to the saw. Shorter belts tend to slip off the pulleys. In Minnesota, steam engines are inspected every two years. “That’s a good thing,” said boiler expert Jeff Lund. Some states like Iowa do not require inspections of antique steam boilers. “That’s scary,” Lund said. He explained, “If it was running at 200 pounds and exploded, and if all that power was directed like through a nozzle under the tractor, it would blow the tractor three miles high!”

The Old Times

I can go lots faster if you don’t help me. by Joan Sween My friend, Susan, and I entered the first building of a giant midsummer antique show and started down the first aisle, admiring the tables of merchandise. As we passed each booth, vendors would call to us, “Looking for something special?” or “Can I help you find something?” or “Just tell me what you need!” To each I would respond, “Just looking, thank you.” “Why don’t you tell them what you’re looking for?” said Susan. “I can see what I’m not looking for, “I said. Or, rather, I can not see what I’m looking for.” “Huh?” said Susan. “If what I am looking for is on the tables, then I can see it. If it’s not there, then I can’t see it,” I said. “What if it’s there and you miss seeing it?” asked Susan.”

the vendor what I’m looking for if he asks, but it’s going to take four times as long to get through this show.” “Don’t be silly,” said Susan, “if you ask the vendor for help, it will only take half as long.” The next booth, my eyes swept over the tables and shelves and I could see he had nothing I was looking for. “Can I help you find something?” he said. “I don’t think you have what I’m looking for,” I grumbled. “Why don’t you tell me and we’ll see,” he said challengingly. “Okay,” I said, ungraciously. “I’m looking for undamaged antique Chinese pieces bigger than 12 inches and with a good representation of red coloring.” “Say no more,” said the vendor as he scooted to the next table and returned with a set of porcelain salt and pepper shakers. “These aren’t bigger than 12 inches

tall,” I said with impatience. “I really don’t think you’re going to find salt and pepper shakers as tall as 12 inches,” he said, gritting his teeth. “I didn’t ask for salt and pepper shakers;” I growled. “I said I was looking for---” “All right, all

This is tall enough.” “It’s not Chinese,” I said. “Of course it’s Chinese,” he sputtered.

“All the painted figures are wearing Chinese dresses.” “All the painted figures are wearing Japanese kimonos,” I snapped. “Chinese, Japanese, what’s the difference?” he whined. I gasped. “Give me one last try,” He said, reaching a sandwich plate off a shelf. “Here! This is bigger than 12 inches and it’s got little Chinese figures all over it.” “It’s Blue Willow,” I said with impatience. “Although it does depict an old Chinese legend, the plate was made by the Johnson Brothers in England, it has no red in it, and this one has a hairline crack across the middle.” “I guess I don’t have what you want,” he said, glaring at me. “I know,” I said. “Well then, why did you ask?” he moaned. I would have said something snarky, but Susan was frantically pulling me along down the aisle.

I’ll know it when I see it,” I said. “If you don’t know what you want, how do you know it’s bigger than a Big Mac?” said Susan, sounding just a bit irritated. “And how do you know if the vendor has it, but it’s still tucked in his tubs because he ran out of table room?” “All right,” I said, stifling a bit of irritation of my own. “I’ll tell
