precious metals. Sought-after from the start, Viennese enamels continue to dazzle today’s collectors. Although perpetually fresh in its use of vivid coloration, enameling is actually an ancient art, dating back at least 3000 years to classic Greece. The enameling process, however, remains one that the Greeks would find familiar: enamel, (essentially glass tinted with metallic pigments), is fired and

fused to metal. Vienna’s claim to fame as “the enameling center of Europe” had very prosaic beginnings—in repair work. During the 19th century, decorative items from the Renaissance era were suffering the ravages of age. Damaged originals were brought to Viennese craftsmen for restoration. So skillful and undetectable were the repairs, that the next step was a simple one: turning out newly-

The Old Times

Bunnies can be dangerous, I kid you not. by Joan Sween My work partner, Julie, and I were having a brisk day at the mall. Just a little after lunch we had a lull, and were sitting down having a much-needed cup of coffee. About then, a couple walked in with a young boy about seven

years old who carried a small wire cage. “You sit on this front bench and play with Nibbles,” the lady said, “while your father and I shop.” Nibbles. Wasn’t that cute? The bench was backed up to the counter so we couldn’t

see what was in the cage, which gave rise to a sotto voce guessing contest. “A gerbil?” Julie whispered. “A hamster?” I whispered back. “A baby rabbit?” Julie said with a sappy expression.

“A kitten?” I guessed, matching her sappy expression. We were quiet for a few minutes, thinking of new guesses. As we sat there, we saw the boy’s hand reach out to the plate of customer cookies, take one, break off a piece and drop it into the cage. Very faintly we heard munching sounds. Moments later another piece of cookie dropped into the cage and we heard it consumed--well, nibbled. This went on for a while-and a number of cookies.

“It has to be a hamster,” whispered Julie. “A gerbil couldn’t hold that many cookies, and bunnies eat only lettuce.” “It has to be a hamster,” whispered Julie. “A gerbil couldn’t hold that many cookies, and bunnies eat only lettuce.” I toyed with the idea of contradicting her, because a baby bunny living in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, had once bitten off the fleshy end of my little finger. I decided not to, however, due to

Dealer’s Choice

By Joan Sween mitigating circumstances--I was the idiot who stuck her little finger into the bunny cage. “I’ll go check on customers,” Julie said, “you see if you can find out what’s in the cage.” I leaned on the counter and tried to look over. “I see Nibbles likes cookies,” I said. “Doesn’t he worry about getting fat?” “Oh, no,” said the boy, “he stays pretty skinny, see?” The boy reached into the cage, pulled Nibbles out, and set him on the counter. Nibbles was a rat. I have nothing against rats--except their long naked tails and their pointed twitchy snouts and their evil beady eyes and the fact that they can bite worse than bunnies and they’re too big and they’re not cute. Worse, Nibbles didn’t even have the grace to be a white rat; he was ugly gray. I decided to play it cool. “Well, hello, there,

Nibbles,” I quavered. “It’s nice meeting you. Why don’t you go back into your nice safe cage and have another cookie?” Just then, Julie came back, walked around the counter jingling her keys, and stopped dead. “A RAT!’ she shrieked loud enough to shatter crystal. “EEEK!” shrieked Nibbles. He dove off the counter and raced down an aisle as though he had been attacked by a crazy woman. “Bring the cage, we’ve got to find him,” I hissed at the boy. Together we tiptoed down an aisle. Julie decided to stay standing on a chair. “Here, Nibbles, Nibbles!” the boy and I whispered as we moved slowly down the aisles. From the back corner of the mall came an ear-splitting shriek. “A RAT!” An elderly lady raced past us and out the door. “What the dickens?” said a man’s voice. And then, “A RAT!” He came quickstepping toward the door, but grabbed my arm on the way. “Do you know you have a rat in here?” he growled. “His name is Nibbles,” I said. “Heh, heh, heh.” We found Nibbles in a pickle crock,

Flea Market survives rumor mill Be Our Guest

Steve Ketcham Guest Columnist

Breweriana collector Dave Wendl holds a prized Grain Belt Brewing Company cone top beer can he scored early one morning at Medina. “Regulars at Medina have a sense of camaraderie but are also very competitive among themselves,” Dave said. “The competition, though, always remains friendly. We are all interested in seeing what others have found, and more than once I’ve seen a picker being congratulated on a good find by the competition. You never know what you’ll find on any given weekend. The key is to get there early, and don’t forget your flashlight!” (Photos by Steve Ketcham unless otherwise noted)

MEDINA, MINN.-The Hamel Lions have been operating their Sunday morning flea market for 30 years. It began when antiques dealer Dorothy Moir and her friend Pat Raskob decided that a new venue was needed after the France Avenue Drive In Theater Sunday flea market closed in 1984. Turns out, Pat Raskob’s family owns the Medina Ballroom, a facility with a large parking lot that is perfect for staging a flea market. Operation of the flea market was assigned to the Hamel Lions Club. Since then,

Minnesota’s Only Vetted Antiques Show!

Collector-dealer Michelle Mueller, a bowl lover, showed off her favorite Medina Flea Market find, a bowl with a “yellow drippy glaze” and bottom stamped with advertising from a Cambridge, Minn., merchant. The merchant advertising stamp matched the stamp found on Red Wing bean pots and bowls, but Mueller did not recognize the bowl pattern as being a Red Wing product. Several years later she shared her find with Red Wing dump digger and researcher Dennis Nygaard. A vintage magazine advertisement Nygaard had found showed the very bowl Mueller bought at Medina years before. Turns out Nygaard had been digging up shards that matched the bowl for some time, but he had never seen a whole example.

the flea market has been open nearly every Sunday morning, May through October. Last fall and winter, rumors were flying that the flea market was slated to close. Ron Roberts of the Hamel Lions put the rumors to rest. “We have a contract with the Medina Ballroom for the next two years. The

rumor may have started because some land to the east of the ballroom has been for sale recently, but it does not affect us.“ The 55 Hamel Lions share the responsibilities of running the market, and even operate a food wagon where dealers and buyers may purchase hot coffee and

pastries to enjoy while shopping and vending in the early morning hours. Funds raised by the Lions are donated to a variety of charitable causes. “The flea market is a good money maker for our club,” said Roberts. “We

Medina diehard Mark Youngblood can be found at the flea market every Sunday unless a good bottle dig lures him away. The treasure he’s holding is a Fadden’s Butler advertising sign, one of his favorite finds ever at the market. He says he has never seen another example of this sign. Youngblood also collects vintage butter boxes and has yet to find an example of the box pictured on this sign. The hunt at Medina goes on.

Each was asked to tell a story of a memorable Medina pick. Even before telling their stories, several of the buyers we spoke with commented on the camaraderie found in the early hours of a summer Sunday.
