The Old Times

Tall tales of the Foshay Tower At its opening in 1929, the Foshay Tower was the tallest building west of the Mississippi and would remain so for decades. Nowadays you have to drive into the city to discover this treasure of Art Deco architecture and masonry lost in a forest of steel and glass. (Photos by Britt Aamodt except as noted)

Foshay spared no expense for the opening of his Foshay Tower. The three-day event, August 30 through September 2, 1929, included fireworks, religious services, a special appearance from the Secretary of War and performances from John Philip Sousa conducting his band in a song commissioned for the opening. The check Sousa received from Foshay bounced. In a fit of pique, the composer forbade the performance of the “Foshay March.” It was only in the 1980s, when a group of Minneapolitans paid off the Sousa estate, that the “Foshay March” was again heard in public. Foshay had married up. Leota Fox Foshay was the daughter of a utilities owner. His marriage to Leota set him on the road to entrepreneurship. He eventually amassed a utilities empire that stretched across the United States and into Canada and Latin America. Leota shared the good and bad times with her jolly, roly-poly husband. In later years, they scraped a living together in Colorado and Arizona, Foshay hiring himself as a marketing man and chamber of commerce director. by Britt Aamodt MINNEAPOLIS – The IDS Center might be the tallest building in Minneapolis, but the Foshay Tower, a mere 32 stories, excels its rival in decorative panache and mystery. The tower was the monumental achievement of one man, his crowning glory. It was feted with ticker tape and the glare of flashbulbs. Its opening was attended by governors, senators, men of the cloth, and beautiful women. And like the Titanic, it was lauded as an unsinkable feat of human ingenuity. Fate stepped in. The Old Times

Wilbur Burton Foshay was born in Ossining, New York, notable as the site of Sing Sing Prison, on December 12, 1881. His father Joseph had been a successful entrepreneur until he lost his fortune, a foreshadowing of his son’s comet-like rise and fall. The Foshay Museum preserves a children’s book given to Foshay by his father and bearing the inscription “from his papa.”

Foshay was a genius at marketing. He promoted his company and tower with a mind-boggling line of merchandise, including women’s compacts, inkwells, and clocks. 34

Foshay sold stock certificates to finance his multimillion dollar building project. 1913, lured to the northern city by the promise of work. By 1916, the Foshays were living in the upscale Kenwood neighborhood, and a year later the budding entrepreneur had bought his first utility. Accumulating utilities with the frenzied optimism of a Jazz Ager, Foshay became a utilities magnate of national prominence. And like the titans out East, he schemed to build a tower that would flash his name in 10-foot letters across the city he had made his own. Construction of the Foshay Tower began in 1928. In his heyday, Foshay traveled the coasts and rubbed shoulders with the high and mighty. He asked renowned sculptor Harriet Frishmuth to design a female nude for the Tower’s courtyard. Called “Scherzo,” the sculpture was allegedly inspired by Ziegfeld Follies girl Desha Delteil. A private collector now owns “Scherzo.” (Photo courtesy of Foshay Museum and Observation Deck)

Foshay’s jury was made up of 11 men and one woman. Genevieve Clark (back row, second from right) refused to convict Foshay, resulting in a hung jury. Reporters discovered she had worked briefly for Foshay’s company but had failed to disclose her connection during jury selection. An enraged prosecutor put Clark on trial. She was found guilty. But before she could serve her sentence, she and her husband drove their two children to an isolated farm and fed toxic exhaust fumes inside the car with a hose. Their bodies were discovered after an extensive manhunt. (Photo courtesy of Foshay Museum and Observation Deck)

Don’t take it personally. We accuse everyone. by Joan Sween My work partner and I opened the antiques mall, made coffee and were ready for customers. Soon, a lady walked in with a beautiful purse. The only problem was that it was bigger than a 25-pound turkey--before he donated his body to culinary science. “Good morning,” I said. “May we keep your purse behind the counter while you browse?” The lady glared at me. “Excuse me! Are you accusing me of being a shoplifter?” “Certainly not. Please don’t take it personally. We ask everyone with large purses to leave them at the counter. Why, if Mother Teresa walked in with a large purse, we would ask her to leave it.” “Humph!” said the lady, but she left her purse. Some time later a man and his wife and their adult daughter walked in. Both ladies carried purses bigger than 5-gallon crocks.

“Good morning,” I said. “May we keep your purses behind the counter while you browse?” The ladies looked horrified and clutched their purses to their bosoms. gentleman The turned bright red and made a shocked gasp. “You dare to suggest that my wife and daughter would steal?” “No, no, not at all,” I said. “Why, if Mother Teresa walked in with a large purse---” “Mother Teresa!” he shouted. “Mother Teresa will not walk in here. She is dead!”

with a large purse---” “Billy Graham with a purse!” shouted the man. “Are you insinuating that he is some limp-wristed fruitcake who carries a purse!” He hustled his ladies out the door and roared out of the parking lot, his back tires throwing gravel. Shortly after that, a lady walked in and headed down the first aisle moving fast. She carried a duffel bag on a strap over her shoulder, unzipped and gaping open. I ran after her. “Excuse me? Ma’am? May we keep your bag at the front counter while you shop?” She didn’t say a thing as she made a fast U-turn and quickly strode out of the mall. a Mid-afternoon lady in a wheelchair rolled in. She wanted to see costume jewelry, but would need help because she couldn’t see the top two shelves “Okay, okay,” I in the showcases. She said. “Let me pick a and I set out, going better example. pieces down for her to examine, we would discuss whether they suited her, and then I would put them back. I was trying to put an elaborate necklace back on its display stand in the last showcase, but it was a tricky twohanded job, and the big mall key ring hampered my efforts. “Here, let me hold your keys while you do that,” said the lady in the wheelchair. I got the necklace back on its velvet platform and slid the showcase lock onto its serrated flange. The lady indicated that she would like to browse on her own at other things throughout the mall, and I left her to browse. After a time, she wheeled up to the service counter, with Foleya cut glass toothpick holder, paid for it, and began to leave. “Oh. I 25 almost forgot,” she said. “Here95 are your keys.” She handed me my shop key ring that I had forgotten to take back from her. OMG! I couldn’t Lake Briggs
