& complementary ephemeral joys by Britt Aamodt ST. PAUL, MINN. – People flock to Althea Willette and to her collection of maps, postcards, advertising and ephemera at the Missouri Mouse in St. Paul, Minn., to locate houses, family farms, neighborhoods and old businesses on her maps. They leave behind stories. “People come in and tell me a story,” Willette said. “‘My great grandmother ran a hardware store at the Cover. Althea Willette turn of the century.’ with Como Park map. The Old Times

The Cedar-Riverside neighborhood is labeled “Auditor’s Sub-Div No. 68.” Railroad tracks seemingly trump all land configurations, cutting across streets and through neighborhoods.

In 1805, St. Anthony Falls was a wild natural area with scattered settlements along the shore. The coming of the timber and flour milling would transform the river into an industrial waterway.

Cedar-Riverside is Minneapolis’S answer to New York’s Greenwich Village. Immigrants--especially Scandinavians--populated the mostly brick and wood structures in 1914. By the 1960s, the neighborhood’s immigrants had dispersed and disappeared into the melting pot; the University of Minnesota had moved onto the West Bank, and the Cedar-Riverside intersection had become the epicenter of the hippie counterculture that emerged with the rise of the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War.

The Old Times

The Real Estate Board of Minneapolis paid for the 1892 real estate map through subscriptions. There are a handful of editions, beginning in the 1880s and revised sporadically over the years, including in 1892, 1903, 1914 and 1940. A look at the 1874 map of Minneapolis shows that its lakes had already taken on recognizable identities—Cedar, Lake of the Isles, Calhoun and Harriet. Surrounding land was divided into large farms, including Lyndale Farm, owned by a Col. W.S. King.

The Old Times

The Map of Minnesota Territory was printed in 1850, eight years before statehood. It includes information on Indian treaties and the lands ceded to the U.S. government.

Cont. from page 5

When people think of map collecting, they often picture yellowed parchment maps of Europe. Willette’s focus is on Minnesota maps, plat maps, real estate maps, retail maps, and streetcar maps. Here an early plat map of St. Cloud, Minn., and of Sauk Rapids, Minn., shows, by definition, who owned individual parcels of land. The curve of the Mississippi River interrupts the government’s division of the land into artificial square or rectangular parcels of property, and layers of information are piled on, distinguished by words of various sizes and typefaces; sometimes using all capital letters, sometimes not; sometimes using boldface, sometimes not; sometimes using italics, sometimes not.

Willette is a Minnesota girl. She grew up on a Delavan farm. She remembers looking at her dad’s Plat map, Stillwater, Minn. copy of the Andreas Atlas and seeing her family name printed across its acreage. At the University of Minnesota, she majored in agricultural geology and got into cartography while designing maps for a professor’s textbook. Collecting maps was a natural outgrowth. Althea Willette points to her family’s farm on a Faribault County, Minn., plat map. She remembers her father pointing out their farm in an Andreas Atlas to her as a girl. Genealogists prize plat maps for the information they provide on size and location of family homesteads, natural features and neighboring properties. The St. Paul Retail Map provides a snapshot of 1932. The St. Paul Hotel, whose owner is listed at John G. A swath of homes and businesses would be mowed down by I-35W. At eyeball level, the CedarRiverside of then seems to have disappeared.

Willette got into collecting postcards through her interest in maps. The postcards provided a picture of what she was seeing on maps, and often from different perspectives. St. Paul’s Sherman Hotel had a series of postcards (above and right) that offered a variety of interior and exterior views.

The Old Times In the first half of the 20th century, Charlie’s Exceptionale was the place to be inside the downtown Minneapolis loop. Newspaper reporters, political bigwigs and shady underworld characters studied the menu (protected by plastic), shared gossip, ate, drank, and made deals over the dishware now in Willette’s collection.

We didn’t tell a single lie by Joan Sween It was 10:00 a.m. at the mall and no customers yet. We had a second cup of coffee and a couple customer cookies. My work partner, Julie, paged through an old magazine; I stared into space. “We could dust our shelves,” I said. One of them gave a sharp tug and jumped into the box of wrapping tissue with the cookie. The other followed. We looked at each other dispiritedly. “We could dust shelves,” I said, “now that we’re heart healthy.” “We could,” said Julie, going back to her magazine. I made a fresh pot of coffee. Because Minnesota has a worldwide reputation for well paved and marked bike trails, Summerfield picked the state to make up part of his trip from Toronto down to the tip of South America. He rode out of Bowlus, Minn., a half-hour northwest of St. Cloud by car, on the SOO Line trail, one of many bike trails that have replaced 19th and 20th century railway lines.
