“What profession do you think these women were in?” Dr. Hawkins asks visitors to his museum. The dead giveaways are their attire (scanty for the 1800s) and their rifles. They were sharpshooters with Buffalo Bill Cody’s touring show.

The Old Times

The Wooton desk is a secretary desk to the nth degree. In an era of upward mobility and increasing paperwork, the Wooton desk fulfilled the owner’s need to exhibit his social prominence while providing a complex system of cubbyholes and slots. Wall pockets were a must-have item of the Gilded Age household, which had fallen into the mistaken belief that exotic bugs crawled out of Turkish rugs overnight. Carpet slippers were kept in wall pockets high on the wall, where bugs couldn’t infest them.

Dr. Hawkins begins his tour of the Sleeper House in the front parlor, where the original family would have taken their guests. The best furnishings, like the Renaissance Revival chair in walnut (right) and the East Lake mantle (cover), were reserved for this space. Homier items, like the Renaissance Revival sofa (above), would end up in the back parlor reserved for family, which has a noticeably comfortable, more lived-in look.

“The hotel should have been making money. It was located next to a railroad station. But the owners had mismanaged it,” said Dr. Hawkins, who has unearthed photographs and stories about this vibrant but forgotten St. Paulite. “If Julian Sleeper were alive today, he’d probably be the president of the chamber of commerce.” By age 30, Sleeper had hired the best architect and builder in the city directory to construct his dream home. The house sat on Holly Street. Sleeper moved it 9 years later when the adjacent girl’s school encroached. He relocated to St. Albans where he also owned boardinghouse properties. He joined the buildings with tunnels. Dr. Hawkins does not post regular hours for the Julian H. Sleeper House. Interested parties are encouraged to visit the website and call (651-225-1505) to set up a tour. It’s one of the best tours in town, too, because hours are flexible, and the tour is conducted by Dr. Hawkins, who has the story and history behind every object in every room. “I’ve looked at life from both sides now” by Joan Sween “Okay, it’s coming up,” I said to The Man I Married, who was in the driver’s seat. “Three houses up on the right, with the ladder out front. Slow. Slow. I see tricycles and kids clothes. Tons of kids’ clothes, but that’s all. This is a great sale for young couples, but nothing we’re looking for. Keep going.” “Here comes a pickup, Emily. It’s slowing down. Going slower. They’re slowing… they’re looking… and they’re going right by! What’s wrong with them? They were an old couple, but they must have grandkids. Wait. He was white-haired and she was pretty wrinkled---make that great-grandkids.” “Next one is only three blocks up. I don’t

see it. I don’t see it yet. Whoops! I saw it. We went by it. It was two people sitting by a card table with about ten things on it. Take my word for it, you don’t have to go back. Oh, okay, turn around and go back if you don’t believe me, but I’m telling you, it’s not worth stopping,” I said, glaring out the window at the houses going by

If you don’t have the garage and the driveway plumb full of junk, they think it’s not worth stopping. And did you see the way that woman glared at us?” “Okay, the next one’s up there on the right. Philadelphia. “The next day, anyone who had money and was interested in keeping up with celebrities took a train to Philadelphia,” said Dr. Hawkins, who ties this story to his collection of wall pockets. People stored their carpet slippers in these wall pockets. Hung high on the wall, they kept a person’s slippers safe from the foreign bugs that allegedly crawled out of the Turkish rugs overnight. The Sleeper House has taxidermied owls, vintage photography, and ice cards in the window for the iceman with his cart of 50-pound blocks. But the crowning feature

has to be the President Garfield room. A lifesize replica of Garfield Museum owner and guide Dr. Hawkins makes like

Today, Gilded Age design might seem a little busy. There are a lot of patterns, conceded Dr. Hawkins, “but it was purposeful. The furniture and wallpaper relate to everything else in the room.” There are just as many stories to hear. by Steve Ketcham RED WING, Be Our Guest MINN.--A new, worldclass museum has opened in the Mississippi River town of Red Wing, Minn. Its creation comes from the efforts of the Red Wing Collectors Society Foundation and the more than 100 volunteers who donated Steve Ketcham nearly 10,000 hours of Guest Columnist time and expertise to the vast project. The Old Times

This outstanding, oneof-a-kind, folk-art smokers set was most likely made by a clay worker at the sewer pipe factory in Red Wing. Dozens of individual designs and forms fashioned by clay workers have been found, including mail boxes, planters and vases, birdhouses, umbrella stands, and more.

A cobalt blue butterfly, resting on a flower, graces the side of this 10-gallon salt glaze crock.

This 20 gallon wing crock is formed like its much smaller canning jar counterparts. It even features a “wax sealer” style closure. It was likely a oneof-a-kind special order, but just what such a large jar was used for, especially with the spigot hole, is a mystery.

Peterson. “While their friends were out golfing, Louise and Jerry were out looking for Red Wing, and it all started when Louise bought a three-pound Red Wing pantry jar. What Jerry and Louise accomplished would be impossible today. Their gift is huge. It is an incredible gift to the city of Red Wing and to collectors.” Combining the Schleich collection with existing museum pieces means the new museum now features exhibits of over 6,000 pieces of Red Wing pottery, from the earliest salt-glazed stoneware produced in the 1870s to the last pieces of dinnerware

produced just prior to the factory closing in 1967. Many pieces are housed in over 70 oak display cabinets, also donated by the Schleich family. Peterson noted that the Red Wing story is remarkable because the company was able to evolve with the needs and tastes of its customers. Once stoneware became less necessary for food production and storage, the company shifted its focus to art pottery and eventually to dinnerware. Numerous examples of each type of pottery produced in Red Wing are now on exhibit at the museum. Visitors will be able to enjoy early salt glazed crocks and jugs featuring stunning cobalt blue scrolls, birds, and butterflies. Muted shades of green will be seen on Brushed Ware and Nokomis Line pieces. And brilliant, bold, eye-grabbing bursts of color will be found on dozens of patterns of art pottery and dinnerware. Additional exhibits will allow patrons to view a section of the old stoneware dump, the company mold room, warehouse, offices, and shipping department. The warehouse exhibit will include original crates of 1960s vintage dinnerware that remained at the factory when it closed. “Everyone has a Red Wing story,” concluded Peterson. “It might be a story about making sauerkraut in a Red Wing crock, a memory of a bowl in their family kitchen, or about a vase. That’s powerful. It seems Red Wing has been a part of everybody’s life.” The museum, located in the Pottery Annex building at 240 Harrison St., will be open Tuesday through Sunday, year-round. lively vocals of “76 Trombones.” The entire cast marched up the auditorium aisles. I led the gang, oversized drum major’s baton in hand. When we reached the seats occupied by the Willsons, Rosemary beckoned me over. “You know,” she said, “I think Meredith would like to join you.” I held out my baton. The years dropped away as Meredith Willson grabbed it and happily led the performers back onstage. By now, the audience was on its feet, lustily singing along, as Mr. Willson energetically conducted one and all through the song’s rousing conclusion. 23 Was there an encore? Foley You betcha.
