KOUKOU_NICOLAIDES_ZIOVA Philosophy Life is a dynamic phenomenon. The life of two young professionals in 25 sq.m. can be overwhelming. Therefore, this micro space that hosts these two people cannot be static if it is intended to cover the needs of modern life. A dynamic, ever changing and adaptable space is the core idea of our proposal.

The movable panels can generate multiple layout variations to serve the various needs of both individuals.

The proposed microhome is laid on one floor, so as to maximise the space and allow for complete flexibility.

To achieve that, there are no fixed walls apart from the bathroom’s thin boundary. There are two sliding panels, which can be used as boundaries separating the different spaces. The panels include folding desks and seats, as well as a TV located in one panel, so as to complement the function of each space and facilitate the residents in their activities.

Sustainable Strategies

Proposed location The proposed model is set in Antikythira, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. The choice of this location was selected for the following reasons: - It is a remote small island - It is not yet connected with the main power distribution network of Greece - Energy production is mostly based in small power plants that consume fossil fuel and to a small extent in renewable energy sources - There is recent municipal effort to attract young people to live in the island providing initial grants The above mark it as an ideal location to set our proposal; however it can be applied in cases where an off-grid, flexible, lightweight option is required.

Space patterns

The panels move in three axes and can rotate at two specific points, which are related to the plan, the openings location and the circulation space required.

Their number (2) apart from functional is symbolic, as it relates to the number of occupants (2) and gives the freedom to each to use the(ir) panel according to their wish.

As panels move and transform the space according to the activity required, in this case we could say that form follows activity.

The space can be transformed to completely open or create separate areas, which can be further defined by concealed elements (i.e. elements included in panels, folding bed).

Panels structure & operation

Passive strategies - PV panels on the south facing roof.

- Thin Sedum mix blanket green roof.

- External shutters to minimise excess heat. Shutters are sliding and their angle is manually operated depending on external conditions.

- Wind turbines at the points where the panels rotate. Design related to the butterfly roof. Noise to be mitigated by their operation mainly when the residents are not at home.

- Double glazing and heated glass to achieve better thermal properties.

- Ceiling fan for internal cooling.

- Rainwater collection and greywater recycling and reuse.

Overall, our model is an example of: - Environmental sustainability, employing energy efficient strategies to make use of the natural elements and reduce energy costs.

- Social sustainability, as it offers off grid accommodation to remote areas, livening up the population in such locations.

- Economic sustainability, due to its cost saving strategy.
