For decades, the subtle pleasures (or the intensity, as the case may be!) of aquavit had been a sort of family secret among Scandinavians and Scandinavian Americans. But over the past decade, as the tradition of craft brewing and craft distilling has exploded nationwide, American producers and purveyors of spirits have discovered the joy of this most venerable of Scandinavian secrets. Until recently, the aquavit market in the United States was rather narrow, limited to liquor stores in the Scandinavian-American regions of the country who imported the few brands of aquavit that had made international names, like Aalborg from Denmark and Lysholm’s Linie from Norway. Today, craft distilleries from Chesapeake Bay to Puget Sound are fashioning their own takes on the Scandinavian classic. For Jul this year, we encourage you to consider supporting your local economy and satisfy the connoisseur of Scandinavian spirits in your life.
