Columbus Centre patrons rally along Lawrence Avenue to protest a controversial $70-million redevelopment proposal.

No ’ulterior motives’ in proposed redevelopment FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com The president and CEO of Villa Charities is denying there are any "ulterior motives" in a controversial $70-million project

that would house the Columbus Centre and Dante Alighieri Academy under one roof. "It’s a red herring for CASA (Columbus Athletic and Social Association)," said Anthony DiCaita. "They keep throwing that

Hockey stars help launch third season of program JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com For the first time in their young lives, 16-yearold Marwa Mazlomyar and 14-year-old Ahmad Algzawe geared up, put on skates, and gave Canada’s favourite sport a try. Marwa, who came to Canada about a year and a half ago from Afghanistan, and Ahmad, a refugee from Syria, are one of about 30 students from Marc Garneau Collegiate in the Thorncliffe Park area to take part in the third season of the Hockey 4 Youth (H4Y) program. "It’s hard to play hockey, but I said to myself that it’ll be fun." Marwa smiled after her first skate. "I never thought girls could play hockey." Ahmad, who lives in the Flemingdon Park neighbourhood, also knew it wouldn’t be easy to master a new sport, but said he’s determined to learn and excel. "I’m going to fall, but it’s good. I’m going to try," he said. Established by midtown Toronto resident Moezine Hasham, H4Y gives newcomer youth an opportunity to play hockey at no cost, while learning valuable life skills. Tuesday morning, students in grades 9 to 12 from the local high school along with some special guests gathered at Leaside Memorial Arena to kick off the 18-week program. Female hockey stars

The Season 3 launch of the Hockey 4 Youth program kicked off Tuesday at Leaside arena with Marc Garneau Collegiate, one of three Toronto high schools currently involved in the program. These photos show off two of the participants - Syrian refugee, Ahmad Algzawe, 14 (top left), seen lacing up for the first time, and Marwa Mazlomyar, 16 (in the white jersey). Top right, she gets help putting on her jersey from Fatima Al Ali (red jersey), captain of the UAE Women’s Team (who also shows off some neat stick work, bottom right); bottom left, Marwa smiles as she falls for the first time; and middle left, she gets advice from another guest, two-time Olympic gold medalist Vicky Sunohara of Scarborough.

for UAE’s national men’s hockey team. Before long, they invited her to join the team. In 2011, Al-Ali became a member of UAE’s national women’s hockey team. "Achieving goals: that’s what this program is all about," Hasham, H4Y’s cofounder and executive director, told the young players before they hit the ice for the first time. "This is an opportunity for us to give back to you. Hockey is going to be that vehicle that will help you pursue your dreams." Sultan Al Harbi, the consult general of UAE in Toronto, was also on hand to offer his congratulations and lend his support to organizers and participants. Offering well wishes to the youth for a great future in Canada, Al Harbi said he’s 99.9 per cent sure they’ll all be great hockey players in no time. Currently, the Hockey 4 Youth program, which also includes an off-ice component, is offered at three Toronto high schools: Marc Garneau, Lester B. Person Collegiate institute in Scarborough, and at Central Technical School in the Annex. A fourth Toronto edition will soon be launched in downtown Toronto at Jarvis Collegiate Institute. Two more H4Y programs are also in place at high schools in Montreal. This season, StubHub ticket marketplace has provided a $30,000 grant to the Hockey 4 Youth program. Funds will be used to help H4Y expand its services to new schools as well as support current programming costs like equipment and ice time.

Both are roughly two kilometres away. But Thakore, like her other area neighbours, will soon be able to walk to get fruits and vegetables thanks to a pilot farmers market at the BathurstFinch Hub. ABOUT US

’Known to police’ are three words that need to go Words always matter – but when they’re put to work talking about the victims and perpetrators of violent crime, from the mouths of police to the pens of journalists, they matter doubly so. And they should be employed with great care. When someone is accused of murdering someone but not yet convicted, it’s irresponsible of police to call them a murderer, and wrong of reporters to describe them as anything other than the accused. When police offer up a description from eyewitnesses of a suspect in a crime, it’s the same thing: we speak of a suspect and not a criminal. When we do this, we are very mindful of the rights and presumptions of the accused - we must presume innocence. Sadly, we are not nearly so careful about the rights of victims - or the memories of those deceased. As Metroland Media Toronto’s crime specialist Andrew Palamarchuk tells us this week, both press and police regularly besmirch reputations and destroy memories, by including three simple words – "known to police" – when describing some crime victims. What does "known to police" mean? It doesn’t mean that police have carded the individual, or that they’ve called the police for help – so it’s not entirely innocent. But it also doesn’t necessarily mean that the person has been convicted of a crime. Police in Toronto use the term when a charge has been laid by police for a Criminal Code offense, of which the person may or may not be guilty. The term does serve a kind of coded purpose: it lets the public know that a violent crime that took place perhaps not far from their home may have been a result of a dispute between criminals, or in the commission of a criminal act. It is a comfort. The problem is, of course, that it really shouldn’t provide comfort. What it does provide is innuendo, against the reputation of people who on the face of it have done nothing worse than find themselves in a bullet’s path. And those people, and their friends, have every right to take offense. This happened following a July 23 shooting at a backyard party at the Scarborough home of Elma Lewis. Three people, including her daughter, were shot. Police used the phrase to describe each of them – to no end other than provide reassurances to the neighbours in the otherwise peaceful Scarborough neighbourhood that for them, nothing had changed. Reassurance paid for with the innuendo of "known to police" is no reassurance at all. Words matter, and we need to be more careful with those three.

Pedestrian deaths stand unmarked on our roads Warden Avenue south of the 401 is brutal and clogged, funneling traffic from the highway over and down a hill to Ellesmere Road. Trucks cut in, and you can sense frustration. By day, the five lanes crawl. By night, they speed up. At Continental Place, a plaza restaurant was still busy at 9:30 p.m. last week when a family of four carried their takeout food across Warden. The mother, 33, and her five-year-old girl were hit by cars going in both directions. The second driver fled. The next day, a scrap of yellow police tape around a concrete pole was the only sign two young, promising lives had ended violently there.

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto Clint Stibbe, a Toronto traffic services cop, studied the intersection. Would a crosswalk help? No, not if drivers coming up or down the hill can’t see it. A pedestrian refuge? They’re made of soft steel, Stibbe said, shaking his head. "If a car hits that, it’s going through it." Meanwhile, people continued crossing Warden where the family crossed.

In recent years, the city installed accessible pedestrian signals down at Ellesmere and at Lupin Drive, a short walk north. But people cross where they cross; the family, perhaps hurrying to catch a bus, or because dinner was late and the children tired, tried the short way. Milorad Radiskovic, who lives north of the highway, was walking home. He said drivers barely seem to acknowledge pedestrians are there. "Where is it better? The downtown? It’s a hell everywhere." That evening, I left a meeting to find McCowan Road lit up by ambulances and police cruisers beyond the recreation centre driveway. I was looking at another pedestrian death scene,

and didn’t know it. A man of 71 was run down crossing McCowan. Hours earlier, on Birchmount Road, another pedestrian died, a man of 56. Murder stains neighbourhoods for years. But pedestrians’ deaths are forgotten. They stand unmarked. We don’t usually learn their names. Cyclists leave ghost bikes to mark fatalities. On Bayview Avenue south of 401, there’s one I’ve seen for years. No mistaking its message. Does Toronto now need ghost pedestrians too? How else can these deaths be seen? t’s a common question for detectives at homicide news conferences: Was the victim (or the suspect if he’s been identified) known to police? Investigators typically answer the question but decline to provide details. The term "known to police," particularly when used to describe victims of violence, has become controversial, with some victims’ families speaking out against its use. Police reportedly used the phrase to describe the three victims of a July 23 shooting at a birthday barbecue in the backyard of the Lewis family home in Scarborough, prompting the family to denounce the term. "Time and time again it has been noted for its ambiguity and inherent laziness. It does not inform the reader but instead is a device utilized to demean, injure and dehumanize the victim," a family spokesperson told reporters a few days after the shooting. "How does this chorus help the societal interest of fighting crime? How does it advance the societal interest of informing the public? . Without more, this chorus does nothing but victimize and denigrate. Ultimately, the continued use of this chorus diminishes us all as it seeks to deprive us of empathy and compassion that common humanity requires of all people." Cal Millar, a retired Toronto crime reporter, said the term, likely coined by journalists, was around when he began his career in the mid-1960s. "It meant does he have a record. It was a bit of a euphemism," he said. But today the term can mean more than a criminal record. "When we are asked, we will say known to police (when) there are charges that have been laid by a police service on this person for a Criminal Code offence," Toronto police spokesperson Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said. But the term is not used to describe witnesses, victims or those charged with a Highway Traffic Act offence. It’s also not used to refer to those who have been questioned during a street check, a practice that was referred to as carding in Toronto. Millar suggested the term was used less in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s because police were more open about the record of an arrested individual or suspect. "There was probably more

Jooyoung Lee, associate professor of sociology at University of Toronto, suggests that the media and the police should ditch the phrase "known to police" when describing victims of violence.

What does being ’known to police’ mean in Toronto? Victim advocates say it ’does nothing but victimize and denigrate’ ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com cooperation at that time between the media and the police. They weren’t as adversarial," he said. "When I started, it was like ’Here’s a copy of the police report.’ You actually got a copy of the occurrence to look at. . And we got mugshots." In the ’90s, police were more restrictive with releasing information on a person’s criminal history, and they and the media began using known to police more often. "In the past, it was referring

to a person who was arrested," Millar said. "But it’s come into common practice now to make references that way to some of the victims." Rob Lamberti , a retired crime reporter who teaches journalism at Humber College, suggested the term often helps reassure a community that a crime was not random. "It was a way of saying to our audiences that ’Don’t worry, general society is not at risk or is not a target because this

person (the victim) was known to police and may have exposed himself to a high-risk lifestyle,’" he said. "But the ambiguity has always bothered me. I just wish that we could be specific. Maybe they (police) can’t and they’re trying to meet us halfway." Louis March, founder of Zero Gun Violence Movement (which works with both murder victims’ families and former inmates), said he has a "major problem" with the term

Cal Millar/photo

CAL MILLAR because it creates a stigma. "It triggers a response when you say known to police. And that might not be the most beneficial statement if you want to solve the case," he said. "Once you use that term, people start thinking differently. . We need to stick to the facts. Report on the facts of the case." Jooyoung Lee, associate professor of sociology at University of Toronto, also argues the term shouldn’t be used. "It unfairly creates the presumption of guilt around the person, who in homicide cases is not around to defend their name," he said. "It’s just another way that society creates the image of a guilty crime victim. . It creates this idea that a person is guilty of doing something and that’s why they were a victim of a terrible crime." The term is entrenched in popular culture and the way police and some journalists communicate, the professor noted. "It is on one hand a very convenient shorthand for describing a person, but when you start to unpack it and scrutinize it, you realize that it’s really leaving out much more than it reveals." But Millar said journalists should report any information they know. "And if that’s all they know, that’s what they should be reporting because the public have a right to know."

If you struggle to understand, you’re not alone, in fact 47% of Canadians over the age of 60 have hearing loss. Your hearing difficulties could be caused by damaged hearing hair cells inside your inner ear (cochlea). When damage occurs in the high-frequency areas of the cochlea (where consonants are heard), speech may sound garbled and comprehension may become difficult. Right, Katerina Cheusova, 4, helps her father Maxim Cheusov backfill around a sapling during the TD Tree Days planting event at Downsview Park Sunday.

Volunteers get digging to plant 500 trees Volunteers helped to plant 500 trees at Downsview Park on Sunday as part of TD Tree Days. TD has partnered with Highway of Heroes Living Tribute, whose goal is to plant two million trees in honour of every Canadian who has served Canada since Con-

federation. Since 2010, the volunteer and urban greening program has facilitated more than 285,000 native trees and shrubs being planted across the country. TD Tree Days has planted more than 3,700 trees and shrubs at Downsview Park, near Keele Street

and Sheppard Avenue, since 2010. This year, 155 planting events, including Downsview Park, will take place across the country through to Saturday, Oct. 28, resulting in 40,000 trees and shrubs being added to urban green spaces.

Celebrate Vietnamese Lantern Festival Vietnamese Women’s Association of Toronto (VWAT) Family Services will host its annual Lantern Festival Sunday, Oct. 8. The free festival will be held at Northwood Community Centre, 15 Clubhouse Crt., near Keele Street and Sheppard Avenue, from 3 to 7 p.m.

I didn’t expect to bring Bella with me.

The event will include a flag ceremony, performances, lantern making, kids activities, lion dancing, mooncakes and tea tasting. While there are several variations of mooncakes, the most well-known one is made up of a soft pastry filled with sweet lotus seed paste and salted duck egg yolk.

Also known as the Moon Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival, Tet Trung Thu, as its known in Vietnam, celebrates the end of the summer harvest by eating mooncakes, lighting lanterns, and taking time to observe the moon and stars. For information call 647723-2165.

or Settling an MPP paints nails for campaign Downsizing Estate in the GTA?

A North York MPP is painting his nails in support of a campaign to end violence against children. Don Valley East MPP Michael Coteau, who also serves as minister of children and youth services, is taking part in Polished Man, a campaign that started in Australia which encourages men to paint one of their nails with nail polish to represent the one in five kids who are subject to physical or sexual violence before the age of 18. The nail polish acts as a conversation starter about child abuse and what can be done to combat it. Coteau is encouraging his Queen’s Park colleagues to paint one nail until Friday, Oct. 6. "October is Child Abuse Prevention Month," said Coteau, a father of two young girls. "This is an opportunity for us to remind people that our best investment is investing in young people, and in making sure

When you throw food scraps in your Blue Bin, food residue and particles get soaked up by paper and can ruin large batches of otherwise good recyclables. In fact, last year an estimated 45,000 tonnes of organic waste and garbage was incorrectly put into recycling. Meaning a lot of ruined recyclables ended up in the City’s landfill. And that is a very bad thing indeed. insidetoronto.com

Rally held to protest Columbus Centre redevelopment l Continued from page 1

week, some carrying signs saying ’We Love Our Columbus Centre’ and ’Save Columbus Centre’. Current plans for the 400,000-square-foot building include a three-storey glass façade along Lawrence Avenue where the Columbus Centre is currently located. The Columbus Centre and Dante Alighieri will each have their own entrances leading to both separate and shared spaces, and will operate independently of one another. Demolition of the Columbus Centre is expected to start in summer 2018 and take two years. Temporary facilities are expected to accommodate members during construction. Once the new building is built, the current Dante Alighieri Academy will be refurbished by the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) for use as

an elementary and middle school, plus day care. The cost of the project will be roughly evenly split between the TCDSB and Villa Charities, which owns the land, and the school board will purchase a piece of the property and lease it back to Villa Charities for 99 years. An appeal by Villa Charities, operator of the Columbus Centre, to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) was made after North York Community Council (NYCC) failed to make a decision on the application within the time frame specified in the Planning Act. "The Italian-Canadian community ... want no part of any development that calls for the demolition of the Columbus Centre," Eglinton-Lawrence MPP Mike Colle said in a release. Baglieri said CASA believes plans for an intergenerational facility is merely a ploy to ultimately

Justin Greaves/Metroland

Protesters rallied last week to oppose a $70-million project that would house the Columbus Centre and Dante Alighieri Academy under one roof. sell land to developers and bring upwards of 3,000 condominium units to the property. "We think there are ulterior motives," he said.

Ian MacDonald, another co-founder of CASA, said the Columbus Centre was built through "the blood sweat, and tears" of the Italian-Canadian com-

munity and does not want to see it torn down. "A lot of us have been there 30 years or more," he said. "The facility we’ve got now is not going to be

there. We’re fighting to say listen, damn it, we don’t like this, we don’t want this, we want to fight this." DiCaita, however, reiterated there are no plans in place for housing. "There are no plans for development," he said, adding future focus will be on upgrading beds and facilities at Villa Colombo Home for the Aged on Playfair Avenue. Villa Charities has planned two informal question-and-answer sessions regarding redevelopment plans Monday, Oct. 23 and Tuesday, Nov. 28, but those might be cancelled as a Request For Proposal to lead community consultations has been submitted through biddingo.com. OMB hearing dates have been deferred until after community consultations are held, DiCaita said. "I’m excited for the community consultations," he said. "It’s an opportunity for a fresh start."
