SGA talks Chick-fil-A Andy Meeks, director of business operations and auxiliary services, sat in on Monday’s SGA meeting to help facilitate an open dialogue about possible food vendor options. According to Meeks, NKU’s food and beverage services have gone up for bid and in an unusual turn of events only one bidder has put forth an offer. When asked, Meeks stated that Chartwells was the only bidder in this round and that they are willing to provide upfront capital to incentivise the offer. If the contract with Chartwells is renewed, NKU might see a new addition to the menu—a Chick-fil-A may wind up being built inside the SU’s game room. This would be in addition to whatever pizza option NKU decides on, Sbarro Pizza being the front runner. Meeks assured students that the capital Chartwells was providing would cover the costs to build the needed facilities. Meeks wanted to bring this to SGA to hear the many voices representing NKU’s student body and whether they would want such a controversial company to open a location on campus. Dan Cathy, CEO of Chick-fil-A, has been vocal about his opposition to same-sex marriage in the United States. In a 2012 article published by the Baptist Press Cathy said, “Families are very important to our country. They’re very important to all of us that are concerned about being able to hang on to the heritage that we have. We support biblical families, who’ve always been a part of that.” Cathy was also involved in a Twitter controversy after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of changing the legal definition of “marriage” and “spouse” to apply to same-sex couples as well. This came before the legalization of samesex marriage in the United States.

Some of those who opposed adding Chick-fil-A to NKU’s dining options didn’t want the university to pay money to an openly anti-LGBTQ+ organization. New NKU mobile app Don Stinson, director of IT’s enterprise systems group, and Kyle Martin, an analyst for IT’s SLCM business support group, discussed NKU’s new mobile app at Monday’s SGA meeting. “Ultimately, our goal is that you never have to sign into myNKU ever again,” Stinson explained. The app was released in December before the commencement of the spring semester. Learning from past mistakes, the team responsible for developing this app wants to cycle out one.nku.edu and create an easily navigable interface that acts as a campus utility. In its current form, it gives access to many different things, such as directions around campus, current GPA, class schedule and a lot more. Stinson hoped that by bringing this to the SGA he could get a few members to help further refine the apps various functions. During the meeting, senators suggested additional services be added, like a campus directory, merging aspects of MyEngagement and adding links to campus media outlets. As of the meeting, Stinson and Martin were working on adding a notifications feature that would provide updates to different campus activities pushed right to your phone. The app is currently available via the Google Play Store, the Apple App Store and web browsers. Student Government Association meets at 3:30 p.m. Mondays in SU 104.

SGA Election ‘19: Who’s running for president

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

At the time of this report, three sets of candidates are running for Student Government Association’s top jobs. Meet the presidential candidates and their platforms (in alphabetical order by last name), and make an informed decision when you go to vote on March 27 and 28.

Barnes & Craig: ‘Choose Change’ Junior clinical social work major and SGA Senator Trayonna Barnes declared she would run for SGA president with junior public relations major Ethan Craig on Feb. 27. The pair are running on a three-point platform of “Active Accountability, Initiating Inclusivity and Electrifying Empowerment for all NKU students,” according to their campaign’s social media accounts. Standout points of the Barnes-Craig platform are creating a “year long relationship” with Kentucky legislators, starting a mental health campaign designating two SGA meetings per year to “positive mental health” and continuing Welcome Wednesday open hours in the SGA offices. If elected, Barnes and Craig also promise to begin having discussions with Norse Violence Prevention Center to “help with specific educational talking points” about sexual assault and domestic violence. The pair also want to “create simple SGA action steps to cultivate an inclusive environment.” Barnes, who served as vice chair of SGA’s Academic Affairs committee, wrote a resolution for annual Title IX reporting. Barnes also served on three university committees. Craig, also an SGA senator, currently serves as president of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, is a 2019 orientation leader and has been involved with Northern Kentucky Leadership Institute.

Miller & Anderson: ‘A Voice for All’ SGA Student Rights Committee Chair Janiah Miller and NKU Panhellenic Council President Lexi Anderson are running to “empower, engage and to commit to the student body” according to their announcement post. Their campaign platform includes creating a “commuter director” position to cater to commuter student needs, programming new series on student well-being, offer grants for parents attending college and investing in advising resources. The full Miller-Anderson platform can be found on their campaign website. Miller, a junior sociology and integrative studies major, is president of NKU’s Black Student Union and an ambassador for the Office of LGBTQ Programs and Services. She has also worked as a constituent intern for Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley, an executive member of NKU’s chapter of the NAACP and a R.O.C.K.S. mentor. As a senator and Student Rights chair, Miller passed resolutions on campus bookstore expansion, National Pan-Hellenic Council and African American Student Initiatives (formerly African American Programs & Services). She also helped coordinate a student “Circle Talk” on inclusivity, as well as a town hall forum on immigration and DACA in 2017. Anderson, a sophomore communications studies major, has served as a Norse Violence Prevention Center coordinator, orientation leader, a member of Delta Gamma sorority, an admissions assistant and Feminist Alliance at Northern (FAN) member.

About SGA’s top jobs The student body president reviews and approves SGA legislation, serves on the NKU Board of Regents, can enter into agreements with other campus organizations and presides over SGA meetings. The student body vice president serves as SGA’s representative for Faculty Senate and Staff Congress, upholds executive duties in the president’s absence and coordinates the SGA retreat and banquet. Chief Justice Travis Roy is serving as the 2019 spring elections commissioner. The rest of the executive board positions and senate will also be on the spring ballot.

Lopez & Sandford: ‘Elevate Your Voice’ Junior political science major and SGA Academic Affairs Chair Jarrett Lopez announced he would run for SGA president with junior Shelby Sanford on Wednesday. Notable points of the Lopez-Sanford platform are extending Student Union dining hours, expanding campus health and legal services, ending the A-, mental health days for students, bringing state lawmakers to NKU and creating a legislative liaison position. Their complete platform of ideas can be found at www. lopezsanfordfornku.com. As SGA senator, Lopez pushed a resolution for an Academic Excellence Committee for students, faculty and staff to create courses and programs. His honorary resolution celebrating the fifth anniversary of the Office of LGBTQ Programs and Services also passed. Currently, Lopez is lead ambassador for LGBTQ Programs and Services, communications vice president and sound mind coordinator for Sigma Phi Epsilon and an ambassador for the Institute of Student Research and Creative Activity. Lopez selected public relations major Sanford for his running mate. Sanford, who served as an SGA justice and senator, notably helped write and pass a menstrual product resolution. Sanford is currently a resident assistant, Kappa Delta Sorority member and holds a position at Biggby Coffee. Sanford has plans to attend NKU Chase College of Law after completing her undergraduate degree.

Filing deadline for candidates for all SGA positions is March 20. Spring SGA elections open March 27 and close March 28.

Best of NKY Hall of Fame: Billie’s Skyline Tavern Dada,

Sam Rosenstiel EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Bluford win SGA presidential election

The Northerner inducts its first member to the Best of Northern Kentucky Hall of Fame for outstanding businesses with a strong connection to the community.

On a hill towering above campus sits an unassuming house. In fact, it’s the house on the tallest hill in Campbell County (no, really), making it an ideal spot for a bar named for a cityscape view of Cincinnati. A white sign with classic black cursive invites passing cars up to “Billie’s Skyline Tavern,” where the parking lot is seldom empty and glowing Christmas lights are strung up year-round. Post-basketball-game trips to Billie’s Skyline Tavern are a tradition older than the university itself—the house and its barroom additions date back to the ‘30s. In 1975, a fire sparked by a shorted-out neon transformer engulfed the main portion of the bar, burning away the roof. It was a disaster that would have closed any other business. But Billie’s isn’t just any business. “We were open that afternoon!” owner Dave Sandhas recalled with a hearty chuckle. “With the roof off and everything. We took the cash register out on the porch.” The burned-out flat roof has long since been replaced with a vaulted ceiling, which is now covered in no less than 40 metal beer signs. History lines the woodpaneled walls, from photos of Sandhas’ mother Billie to a red metal fire helmet hung above photos of the smoldering tavern. Skyline Tavern was Sandhas’s childhood home and, at one point, housed four generations. After founder Cliff Guddorf died, his daughter Billie Sandhas, for whom the bar is still named, took over for the next 43 years. Dave, Billie’s son, took over in 2006. Skyline, not to be confused with the chili parlor of the same name, serves up classic bar fare with down-home charm. The Billie’s Famous Skyline Burger is a classic third-pound of beef piled high with classic fixins. There are variants, like the Cliff ’s bratwurst burger, named for Skyline’s founder, and the veggie burger. Those pair well with the tavern’s fries, which are cut like a Chick-fil-A waffle fry but are fried and seasoned like an Arby’s curly q. The joint’s famously large buffalo wings come smothered in tangy, zesty hot sauce. On Monday nights, they’re only 55 cents a wing. Sandhas said the tavern has endured thanks to its loyal patrons. “I got great help, great patrons, the older crowd, the afternoon crowd drifts in and the kids that come over are awesome,” Sandhas said. Behind the bar, the friendly staff ranges from students to recent grads—some of whom have worked at Billie’s for years. Bartender and NKU graduate Christi Rodriguez has worked at Billie’s for four years, starting in her senior year while she was studying technical writing and art history in 2015. She said developing relationships with customers is most important to her at Billie’s. “We’re like a family,” Rodriguez said. “Dave is like the best person I’ve ever worked for. I guess that’s why I haven’t pursued any other career choices. I just love it here so much.” More recently, Sandhas said, when the bar was slammed after a high school basketball tournament let out at BB&T Arena, devoted regulars rolled up their sleeves to helped the swarmed staff. They hopped up from their beers to bus and wipe down tables during the rush. It was a gesture that touched Sandhas. “We have the best customers,” Sandhas said, greeting one by name as he came through the threshold to the bar. At any time of day, neon light from the electric bar signs bathe patrons as they swig Miller Lite and shots of Fireball. The fridge is stocked with craft brews from Rhinegeist to Braxton, and Miller and Bud flow from the taps. Sure, it’s a bar. But it’s a lot more. Time seems to stand still (though the Budweiser bar clock is set a smidge fast) when brushing shoulders with the regulars at Billie’s, where a friendly ear, a hot sandwich and a cold brew always seem to be waiting. Though campus growth has somewhat cropped the view of the skyline, you can still see the Queen City silhouette six miles away, even on a cloudy weekday. Like any worthy tradition, Sandhas said, Billie’s isn’t going anywhere. “As long as the doctor keeps me alive, we’re rocking,” Sandhas joked. “I hope it’s a long time.”

ARTS & LIFE EDITOR

Pisces: Have you ever done yoga on the beach? How about swimming with dolphins? You’ll have the opportunity to on this break from student life. Enjoy it while you can. Don’t get too worn down by Capricorn during the week though.

Aries: Please be careful on spring break. When going to the beach, know your limits. Understand you don’t have to do everything. Don’t spend enormous amount of money on pointless things; trick your friends into doing it for you.

Taurus: You are probably not spending a lot of money on this trip, nor planning this trip. What are you doing over break? Do you even know? Call Virgo right now to find out.

North Poll

Gemini: Your beach trip might become a sightseeing adventure with Capricorn. During the day, you’ll be found strolling through the city blocks. However, the night will flash before your eyes while you’re at the club.

Cancer: Wear plenty of sunscreen! You will need it because Libra won’t remind you. If you don’t, next week your skin will be as red as the crab you are. And more than SPF 35.

Leo: You’re going to be torn between joining Gemini and hyping up Aries and Sag to parasail that you will be living the best of both worlds. You’re going to be living your best life meeting new “friends” and posting about it on your Instagram story.

Virgo: After four friends dropped from the trip, you planned the whole trip and bought the Airbnb. You’re excited to be able to enjoy the trip. Unbeknownst to you, you’re still going to be babysitter the whole week.

Sagittarius: As the week drags on, you and Aries are going to become exceedingly broke. At the end of the week, you are going to be begging friends for money, then your paycheck will drop. The cycle will surely repeat itself. Capricorn: You might be caught in the city with Gemini or on the beach with Libra and Cancer. Nonetheless, you will most likely head to the Airbnb early to make dinner for the night.

Libra: You will be the most unbothered person on the entire beach. You and Cancer will be spending the whole time gathering the most sun rays possible. But when you’re not on the beach, you’re diving into the city and sightseeing with Scorpio. Scorpio: You are literally dragging Libra to experience the best of the city. You are running back and forth through the bars and in and out of the shops, ignoring Libra’s wishes to go back home.

Aquarius: You are most likely to be the driver the whole week, unless you’ve had nine beers that night. You’re going to have a fanny pack in your left hand and phone open to a “Party Nite” Spotify playlist in your right.

SPORTS EDITOR

The first leg of the 2019 Horizon League Men’s Basketball tournament kicks off on Wednesday, March 6. The Norse will face the seventh seed Detroit Mercy Titans at BB&T Arena with tip off at 7 p.m. The game will also be broadcast on ESPN+. The Norse split the title of regular season champs with Wright State and take the two seed in the tournament. Last year, the team won the regular season title, but fell in the first round of the tournament against Cleveland State, the number eight seed. The past two clashes, the Norse have been victorious over Detroit Mercy, with wins of over 19 and 30 points. The Black and Gold have yet to stop an integral player of the Titans, freshman guard Antoine Davis. This season, he has dropped a total of 59 points on the Norse. Davis still leads the Horizon League in scoring with an average of 26 points per game. Davis also leads the league in three-pointers per game, averaging 4.4 a match. Graduate student guard/forward Derrien King is the most consistent on the boards against the Norse, with a total of 11 on the year. King also averages 3.7 rebounds per game on the season.

Fighting for the home team, senior forward Drew McDonald is the second leading scorer in the conference, averaging 19.3 points per game. McDonald has put up 43 points and 13 rebounds against the Titans this season. McDonald leads the conference in rebounds with an average of 9.6 per game. NKU, on average, holds teams to 68.4 points a game. Detroit Mercy allows opponents to score 78.8 points, on average. NKU has held Detroit Mercy to 65, while Detroit has allowed NKU to score over 90 twice. The Titans haven’t stopped the Norse from going inside, allowing 42 and 48 points in the paint in their last two contests. Detroit may have one of the sharpest shooters in the Horizon League, but their defensive efforts don’t stop enough shots to keep the Black and Gold down. The winner of this game will go on to play the winner between number three seed, Oakland, and number six seed, Youngstown State, on Monday, March 11 at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
