NJIT Climbs Up in Rankings

to keep this momentum going and continue improving on these statistics for each of Forbes’ criteria.

1. Alumni salary: As a polytechnic university, NJIT benefits from the fact that STEM — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — degrees, especially those in engineering, are among the most valuable today. The World Economic Forum found that the top 25 majors by pay and demand are in STEM subjects. Expanded internship fairs — with positions for all majors — and promotion of co-op programs for students can improve further on NJIT’s average starting salary of around $64,000. Graduates with at least one paid internship receive a starting salary around $15,000$20,000 higher than those without, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

from VentureLink’s start-up Highlander Foundry to the bachelor’s degree concentration in innovation and entrepreneurship available at the Martin Tuchman School of Management, aims to increase the number of NJIT graduates on lists such as “American Leaders.” However, only time will tell whether these measures are successful in boosting entrepreneurship.

The Forbes ranking system is based on seven metrics, weighted as follows:

This year represented a major step forward in recognition for current students, faculty, administrators, and alumni — it is their work, especially during the difficult years during and just after the pandemic, that has facilitated this change. The upcoming challenge will be

7. Academic success: Forbes measures this factor through two markers - the number of students who have received prestigious awards such as Fulbright, Goldwater, Rhodes, and Truman scholarships as well as the average number of Ph.D. awardees over the last few years. It’s possible that several students’ recent success with distinguished fellowships and a jump of over 500 in the number of graduate students have fueled NJIT’s boost in ranking.

ENTERTAINMENT Week of September 11, 2022 See page 5 See page 7

5. Return on investment: This is defined as the difference between the 20-year median pay for a bachelor’s graduate and the 24-year median pay for a high school graduate. NJIT’s average return on investment is $729,000, compared to a total cost of attending of $148,000 according to Payscale. This figure does not account for the financial aid that most students receive. For comparison, top universities can have returns on investment reaching over $1 million. However, NJIT’s statistics are still a cause for celebration — it has the highest return on investment of all New Jersey public universities. A higher return on investment can be achieved by increasing the value of an NJIT degree, in essence, by the school supporting students’ achievements and garnering publicity.

In 2021, NJIT ranked 189th in Forbes’ national list “America’s Top Colleges,” which lists the top 500 undergraduate institutions in the United States, including public and private colleges. 2022 saw NJIT ranked 75th, rising 114 places and beating all three Rutgers campuses to become the highest ranked public college from NewAmongJersey.all

Recent news about NJIT’s improvement in several of these categories is impressive and a cause for celebration. However, to keep up this progress, it is important to recognize the areas that have room for improvement.

public universities, NJIT comes in 28th this year, up from 89th in 2021, and rose to 58th place in research from 126th last year. Notably, this pronouncement comes after NJIT’s successful push to have its R1 status reinstated after it was stripped earlier this year. In the Northeast, NJIT’s position rose from 78th to 34th.

This month, NJIT first-years and faculty alike were greeted with the news that national rankings of NJIT by numerous third-party organizations including Forbes, The Princeton Review, and Money, have soared over the last year.

The Forbes ranking emphasized the college’s research expenditure, amounting to over $165 million last year, and programs such as the URI program that awards $3000 to students to conduct research over the summer. The real-world experience that students can receive by working with faculty in Newark or near New York City was also considered.

2. Debt: 93% of undergraduates receive some form of financial aid and 69% receive institutional grants. As NJIT is a public school and the vast majority of students are from New Jersey, the average cost of attending is much lower than that of a private school. However, as students progress in their education, the cost of getting a degree - especially multiple degrees - can add up. This is when a strengthened support system from NJIT to find a paid internship could be extremely helpful. Internships create a simpler pathway between college and a career, as successful students are hired full-time as soon as they graduate. Several companies fund an employee’s master’s degree, which can otherwise run up to tens of thousands of dollars.

3. Graduation rate: Around 65% of NJIT undergraduates complete their degrees within six years, according to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. This number is slightly higher than the national average, which lies around 63%, but far below the 93% six-year graduation rate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which ranks first on the Forbes list. One way to boost this rate might be to offer more hybrid classes for seniors or employed students, so that completing their degree doesn’t require excessive travel every day. Although the class experience cannot be replicated online, allowing practical work to be done on campus and other work at home might make classes more convenient for those in special circumstances.

4. Forbes American Leaders List: This list includes CEOs and scientists who have founded some of the most successful corporations in the world and patented novel products. NJIT’s entrepreneurship pipeline,

6. Retention rate: This is defined as the percentage of students who stay at the college from their first to second year. Around 89% of students stay on after their first year at NJIT as shown by the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System; this is a heartening statistic compared to the 69% national average. However, the larger concern is that many students don’t complete their degrees on time. Although NJIT’s retention rate is much higher than other national statistics, the graduation rate can be improved to improve rankings further.

Afterwards, President Lim took the podium for a brief speech marking the occasion. Answering Minsky’s question, he related his own experience on that day. At the time, Lim had been an associate professor in Tuscaloosa at the University of Alabama. He narrated how he had been too shocked to believe what had happened in the hours right after the attacks, wondering whether it had been the site of a movie being filmed.

At 9:57 they began their counterattack, And they were successful and they took the cabin back. On the flight recording you can hear them banging, banging, banging at that cockpit door, And the terrorists realized they would not fulfil their mission any more. Where the terrorists were heading is something they cannot say, But Flight 93 saved lives when they lost theirs on that day.

The plane was delayed on runway before it took to the air, Otherwise the passengers would have never been aware. They used their cell phones to reach out to those that they loved, And they learned of the terror that was raining down from above. They realized that they were part of a larger terrorist attack. And they took a vote, and they decided that they’d fight back.

On Sept. 9, NJIT honored the victims of 9/11 through a memorial hosted by the Office of Student Life. The program began at 10 a.m. and was hosted by Amber Danku, Assistant Director for Commuter Life and Operations at NJIT. Her commentary throughout the event was personal, as Danku has family members who are first responders.

"Itagain!"wasgood,

How was your first week of school?

A former trustee and his wife were aboard Flight 93, which took off from Newark, when it crashed. The wife of NJIT’s Dean of Students died in the tower collapse when she heroically rushed back upstairs to ensure that her employees had made it out.

In addition to this horrific tragedy, the memorial commemorated the courage and selflessness that so many showed in response to insurmountable odds. Flight 93 was en route to San Francisco when it was hijacked, and it is theorized that the plane was meant to crash into the United States

Todd Beamer’s heard saying, “Are you guys ready? Then let’s roll,” And they took on the terrorists and tried to take back control. The people they were fighting, they had box cutters and knives, But they knew if they did nothing, it would mean their lives.

Thomas Burnett told his wife, “I know we’re going to die. But there are three of us, and we’re going to make a try. I love you, honey,” were the last words he said Because they all knew of the terror that was just ahead.

An opening prayer was led by Rabbi Avraham Minsky from Chabad Jewish Newark. Minsky recollected his experience on Sept. 11, 2001; he was a third-grader in Brooklyn when the announcement of the attack was made. He posed the question of “Where were you?” to the audience, meant both in person and in spirit. Minsky pointed out that the September 2001 attacks were driven by ignorance and hatred, and that the best way to combat this is to promote interpersonal dialogue, friendship, andThunderstanding.isstatementrang

Sandy Bradshaw, flight attendant, called her husband to explain, She was filling pitchers of boiling water at the back of the plane. But the counterattack started early, and she told her husband, “I have to go,” Her duty, honor and service is something everyone should know.

"my first week of school was awesome. i love getting dressed up even for classes and the rain really makes me feel warm so i took the gloominess and created inner happiness"

especially true for NJIT’s diverse student, faculty, and administrative bodies, which can be pointed to as a success story of people from differing backgrounds coming together to learn. The prayer ended with a wish for all people, of all faiths and experiences, to live forever in love and peace.

Lim also honored the personal losses that NJIT faculty and alumni faced as a result of these terrorist attacks. Nine NJIT alumni died in the collapse of the towers; these alumni ranged in age from those who were established in their careers to some who had graduated just a few years before their loss.

How do you honor heroes? You put their deeds in song. This is a song about heroes, of this country to which we belong. This is a song about bravery, about people like you and me. This is a song about the courage of the people on Flight 93.

"My eyelid started twitching on day 2"

As the occasion came to a close, NJIT AFROTC Detachment 490 raised the flag to half-staff and a representative from NJIT’s Public Safety Department laid a wreath at the base of the flag. A student bugler from NJIT, fifth-year architecture major Lucas Konrad-Parisi, played the bugle in a solemn tune.

After Lim moved to NJIT, the importance of the day was underscored further because New York City is directly visible from many spots on campus. In particular, Newark Liberty International Airport is so close that during the speech, multiple planes were seen taking off and landing behind the speakers. One of the planes that was hijacked on 9/11, United Airlines Flight 93, took off from Newark; it may have been visible from campus on that day.

On September the 11th, at 8:42 a.m., They took off from Newark, but they were never seen again. But they will live on forever, because we will never forget The courage of the passengers on that United Airlines jet.

"The first day of school was definitely special for me.. considering I was 5 minutes late to my very first college class. It was raining heavily thus there was a lot of traffic that made my cry full of frustration. But as things get better.. I was the only one of my high school friends group who got the opportunity to play bowling (and the one who had it on the campus!)"

However,Capitol.the passengers and crew fought back after taking a vote and the plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. None of the people aboard survived, but they undoubtedly saved several lives with their actions. To immortalize their deeds, adjunct professor Mark Annett from the Martin Tuchman School of Management recited an original poem, titled “Courage of Flight 93”, at the event.

"I’m somehow already behind…"

Danku provided closing remarks, noting that most of NJIT’s current undergraduate body was either born after the attacks or were too young to remember them. She encouraged students to seek out those who could tell them first-hand stories about 9/11 and its aftermath. The best way to honor the memory of those who perished, she said, is to remember and teach.

"Rip my poor sleep schedule. 8:30s aren’t the vibe"

"I think I spent more time in fire drills than I did in class"

During my first year at NJIT, I had the opportunity to visit Branch Brook Park many times for volunteer opportunities. At first, I didn’t think too much of it; it was more or less required for me to spend weekends at the place. But through many hours of picking up trash, getting my socks muddy, and cutting myself on thorn bushes, I found myself attached. Even today, I figure it to be one of the best places in Newark to escape the urban sprawl for a bit.

A…muskrat?waterfowl.

Woodchuck? Some beaver cousin? I don’t really know, but they were cool!

Now, I know you’ve been following this tour extremely closely. Good job! You may have noticed that I never said what was on the right side of the lake. Well, it’s because I’ve been keeping something secret from you all. How terrible of me.

A simple way to get there is to go towards Yaya Tea and follow Central Avenue. Making a right onto Norfolk Street is a straight shot right to the park. If you have the means and you call a ride service to take you there, I wouldn’t make fun of you. As we all know, the option with the least effort involved is always the best one; it’s just a fact.

little past the entrance shown above, there stands the Shakil Williams Playground. It’s surprisingly big and doesn’t have that wood chip flooring that splinters your hands whenever you fall on them. There’s also a big gazebo with tables; it’s not the cleanest in the world, but it'll do. If any of our student body out there has kids or is just babysitting for the day, this would be a nice place to hang out.

A chicken! Definitely not native to these parts. Someone out there just lost one of their chickens that day. I feel bad for them.

Some days, when the sun isn’t beaming too hard and the wind is just right, you can find me here. Maybe we could talk about things. Maybe you could show me more places you like. Or you couldn’t, don’t think many people know me beyond words on a page anyway. Still, I do hope you find time to explore for yourself. It really is something special.

looking for open spaces to train and play a few games, I’m sure you’ll find this place to be useful.

Concert Grove is commonly the focal point for any social activities in the park. It’s where several volunteer organizations set up their booths and where many people hold festivals and set up markets to walk through. If there’s an event set to happen in Branch Brook Park, there’s a good chance it takes place in this little circle.

The Branch Brook Park Roller Skating Center is a bit farther from the playground; you’d have to walk down to the lake and stay on the right side. If you’re looking for an event, the center can be reached at bbpskating. com. You can tell them I sent you. Or don’t. They don’t know who I am.

It’s definitely a trek, but a rule of thumb for me is to just keep going towards The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the fifth largest cathedral in North America. You’ll find it there: the best area in this entire park, The Welcome Pavilion. I mean, the flowers that they plant here? The views you get from some of the high points? If you really want a place to just chill and admire all that’s around you, I couldn’t pick a better spot. Being that I’ve spent many hours myself doing upkeep on the place, I’m glad that I’ve helped it stay the best part of this park.

Public vs. Charter Schools

This decision removes the constitutional right to an abortion and possibly opens up the removal of access to contraceptives, same-sex marriage, and relations. All three of these cases severely erode the separation of church and state and seemingly stand in stark contrast to the First Amendment, which protects against laws respecting an establishment of religion.

The dilemma is sending their child to a private school but paying the high tu ition there (which may help their child to get into a good university) or public schools with no tuition, but the quality of education is not that high; and then charter schools, which is also for free but may or may not have good and accom modating teachers.

President Obama even suggested con verting underperforming public schools to charter schools.

It would be easier for everyone if there were only schools that received good funding from the government. Wouldn’t it be easier for everyone if students study and their parents need not worry about paying their tuition, or have to make a pros and cons list of the various kinds of schools we have, and then land upon a decision? That’s what I have to say, but I would love to hear your opinion about this match between public schools and charter schools.

The number of charter schools is increasing very rapidly. They are now present in 44 states and the District of Columbia, according to the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. Despite the film having Strange’s name in the title, Dr. Strange seems like almost a secondary character in his own film. The story focuses much more on Wanda Maximoff and even America Chavez, so much so that it’s hard to focus on Strange’s own emotional arc during the film.

All in all, the film features some great horror elements from director Sam Raimi and some very fun references and appearances from other universes. However, despite all the build-up the MCU has done for this film, the reverse character development of Wanda Maximoff, Dr. Strange not being the main character in his own film and the lack of Vision (meant as both a reference to the character and a pun) the movie has some serious

song might not be “Bad for Business,” but it sure was bad for her album. It didn’t make any sense. I anticipated depressing vibes throughout the whole

once again sees the error of her ways at the end of the film, this “redemption” does not feel as satisfying or as earned as it originally did in “WandaVision.” While some may argue she was completely under the influence of reading the Darkhold, that is still up for some debate.

In the next track “Tornado Warnings”, Carpenter ensures the lyrics are both metaphorical and literal. The background is a perfect combination of bassline and drums. “Lying to my therapist” is the best line in the song, showing how forthright she was while writing it.

Carpenter opens with the song “emails i can’t send.” Ironically, its lyrics don’t include the name of the song. “emails i can’t send” sets the tone for the album. A collection of songs filled with pain, disappointment, and love is hidden with beautiful lyrics, revealing that this is her most personal album.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” begins with sorcerer Dr. Steven Strange continually dreaming about a young girl in danger. Soon enough, he finds out that the girl is none other than America Chavez, who can travel across the multiverse, and his dreams are just glimpses into those other universes.

is by far her most personal one and all the lyrics are from her heart. However, some songs aren’t what I expected from her. So, I’ll give “emails i can’t send” four crabs. I’m really glad Sabrina decided to finally release these emails.

Marvelous? Not Quite.

If you watched the film excited to see the beloved character Wanda Maximoff, you may have left the theater slightly disappointed. After the events of “WandaVision,” Maximoff seemed to have learned her lesson and faced her consequences. She learned that “heroes don’t torture people,” but this film seems to have forgotten her entire arc through that series as she goes from not only controlling people but brutally murdering them in seconds. Maximoff goes on a rampage and massacres fleets of sorcerers and the members of the Illuminati.Whileshe

Now the film’s “big bad” is where it gets slightly complicated, and of course, this is an official spoiler warning.Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. The Scarlet Witch, is responsible for trying to capture Chavez in order to steal her powers, thus killing her in the process. Maximoff ’s motivation is that her children exist in every universe except her own, and if she could travel to those different universes she could be with her children and whenever anything would go wrong, she could travel to another universe to find the solution.

“how many things” is a very vulnerable song. It’s filled with emotions and rhetorical questions. The beats are minimalistic and the lyrics are also very easy to understand.Theeighthtrack,

I have to admit the name of the album is pretty weird and doesn’t correspond with its songs; however, this might be the best album Sabrina has released to date.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has slowly been building up to the introduction of the multiverse, from the infamous “Bohner” joke in “WandaVision” to Loki and Sylvie breaking the timeline, and of course to the amazing Peters 1, 2, and 3 in “Spiderman: No Way Home.”Needless to say, this film was incredibly anticipated, but did it live up to the hype? Honestly, it depends on the hype you bought into.

Strange takes on the task of helping Chavez escape from various threats and discovering who is sending these multiversal beings to capture Chavez. The two must battle these many threats, including other-universe versions of Dr. Strange himself, and defeat the film's “big bad” before the multiverse becomes irreparable and millions are killed.

Over.”. Well, I guess I waited for the song to get over because it had a boring tune and wasn’t very catchy.

“decode”song.

It is also worth noting that if you sat at the edge of your seat waiting for Vision, Wanda’s love interest and the father of her children, to show up in any universe, you will be gravely disappointed - as I was. Vision not being in the film at all seemed like a major plot hole on manyFirstly, fronts.in

“WandaVision” we see Vision come back to life as “White Vision” and fly off, and while we don’t know where he went it is clear he is alive. Secondly, this is the “Multiverse of Madness”, emphasis on multiverse. It’s hard to believe that in all the universes Wanda searched she did not find one with both her kids and husband alive.

“bet u wanna,” might be the best song on the album. I like the combination of beats, the guitar and the drums. It's all so soothing. It would easily fit into an Ariana Grande album.

Now if you watched this film hoping to see the other universes of the MCU, you likely would have been satisfied enough. The movie gives us the Illuminati as the main source of multiversal beings that die-hard Marvel fans can cheer for. Seeing Blackbolt and Professor X was definitely a highlight of the film, and seeing new characters and variations like Captain Carter, Maria Rambou’s Captain Marvel, and the ever-famous fancast of Mr. Fantastic was also very exciting. But outside of the short appearance of the Illuminati, the film does not spend much time showcasing the other universes and their differences or characters.
