Jock Talk with Jock Wilson

Don’t blame Henry, but the Stamps should make changes!

He’s a CFL’s all star, the Most Outstanding Player in 2010 and he was the Grey Cup MVP in 2008. So why are football fans in this city so adamant about running Henry Burris out of town? Following a disappointing loss to the Riders in the West Final, I couldn’t believe how many passionate fans called our post game show on QR 77 to throw Smiling Hank under the bus. I know Burris is the highest paid player on the team. I understand he has never beaten the Riders in the playoffs. I realize he wasn’t the difference maker in the West Final when he is expected to be that player. I also know football is a team game. “Our team did now allow Henry to function properly,” stated Stampeder head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. “This was a team mistake, I am very disappointed and I will not forget it for a long time.” It’s no coincidence the Stamps returned to respectability when Burris was signed a free agent 6 years ago. He is already on record as saying he will not be Brett Farve. He is not going to play until he’s 40. So let’s cut Hank some slack and enjoy his skill and leadership for at least two more seasons. While Henry stays, there are a couple of high profile veterans I would move. Running back Joffrey Reynolds is past his best before date. He may be one of the best conditioned athletes on the team and he may be the Stamps all time rushing leader, but all good running backs hit the wall and I think it’s very clear his skills are starting to decline. Reynolds has a big contract and as the Stamps are a cap team in a salary cap world, it’s time to bring in a younger and cheaper talent. This also gives Jon Cornish a chance to take a bigger role in the offense. Punter Burke Dales may be a CFL all star but why he was selected as the Stamps most outstanding special teams player this year is a mystery to me? Dales has a strong leg but he is still directionally challenged. Three singles in the West Final cost the Stamps valuable field position as Dales could not find the coffin corner. Rob Maver was a solid punter in college and if can handle both duties next season it will open up a valuable roster spot. The Stampeders desperately have to upgrade their Canadian talent at receiver. Ryan Thelwell is done but I would also say goodbye to Arjei Franklin and Jabari Arthur. The Stamps did draft Spencer Armstrong (Air Force) two years ago and they are hoping Johnny Forzani will mature as a professional, but this will be an area addressed at the 2011 Canadian College Draft.

38 year old Rob Lazeo is a great guy and started at center ahead of Tim O’Neill in the Western Final. Like Joffrey Reynolds, his age and salary makes him expendable. I also wonder about the future of veteran safety Wes Lysack. A great leader in the room but the Stamps are very happy with the emergence of Eric Fraser. One of the big question marks in the off season will be Defensive Lineman Mike Labinjo. Since signing his big contract in 2008, his play has been inconsistent because of injuries and conditioning. If he stays, he may have to take a major pay cut as the Stamps may ask him to restructure his contract. Make no mistakes, there will be changes in the off season for the Calgary Stampeders. However, this is not a team that needs a major overhaul! On a side note, “Guys, how well do you know your equipment?” Testicular cancer is not a funny topic but the Calgary Stampeders and the Canadian Cancer Foundation have teamed up to produce a very entertaining 3 and half minute video to create awareness on early detection. Go to www.youtube.com and search “Stampeders real men screen.” Host Amy Matysio is from Regina and she is one funny lady! This video will not only educate you but it will have you in stitches. Word on the street is they had to edit Nik Lewis from the video. After watching it you can probably figure out why!

About Jock Wilson: Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for close to 30 years. He hosts the Calgary Stampeder football broadcasts on QR77 and is the co-host of Sportstalk with Mark Stephen from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

From the Publishers Ho! Ho! Ho! and Merry Christmas! Another year gone and who would have thought that this would be The Newsy Neighbour’s third Christmas?! Holy New Year - and what a ride it has been. We just published our 1st Calgary issue of “Breakthru” magazine, which is pretty much just like The Newsy Neighbour, but with a Calgary twist. Dear Newsy Neighbour Gals, I look forward to receiving and reading your magazine every month. Of particular enjoyment was the “Rules of Rural Alberta”. It brought to mind a comment Jean Chretien made years ago about Westeners - “You are a different people”. Living here now over 40 years and continually hearing the Eastern media and others refer to us as rednecks; following, from my own observations, are the conclusions of what constitutes a Western Redneck: - You believe you get a job through skill and competency, rather than; race, gender, or political affiliation. - You have more compassion for the victim of a crime, then the criminal perpetrator. - You believe you have the right to the fruits of your labour, and personal property. - You believe you have the right to your religious beliefs; without being mocked or belittled about them. - You believe a promise given, is a promise kept. Honesty in your dealings with others. So Newy Neighbour Gals, from one Westener to another - keep up the good work! Yours Truly, A. Reinwald Thank you so much Anna for your wonderful words! We are more than happy to publish your conclusions on what constitutes as a Westener Redneck, and agree with you completely. Jean Chretien was right, we are different people! And different in our terms is what you described above! We loved your submission! Please feel free to contact us again anytime and have the most wonderful Holiday Season. Aleesha, Kathryn & Denise

My next door neighbour was driving home from work a little too fast, when he noticed an R.C.M.P. patrol car in his rearview mirror with his lights flashing. Hoping to evade getting a speeding ticket, he sped even faster, thinking the mountie would back off. No such luck. When he finally stopped, the police asked him why he had sped up instead of stopping. His excuse was that his wife had run away with a mountie two weeks prior and he thought that they were bringing her back. He beat the ticket. ~ Submitted by George Hampton of Chestermere

BODY PARTS – THE HUMAN HEART We all very well know that without your heart you would not be alive. I guess you could say your incredible heart is the most important thing in your whole life and the most important organ in the entire human body. The average human heart, beating at 72 beats per minute, will beat approximately 2.5 billion times during an average 66 year lifespan. The heart pumps the blood, which carries all the vital materials which help our body’s function and removes the waste products that we do not need. The brain requires oxygen and glucose, which, if not received continuously, will cause you to loose consciousness. Muscles need oxygen, glucose and amino acids, as well as the proper ratio of sodium, calcium and potassium salts in order to contract normally. If the heart ever ceases to pump blood the body begins to shut down and after a very short period of time will die. The heart is made of a special kind of muscle called mycocardium, and is enclosed in a doublelayered sac called the pericardium. The superficial part of this sac is called the fibrous pericardium. This sac protects the heart, anchors it, and prevents overfilling of the heart with blood. The outer wall of the human heart is composed of three layers. The outer layer is called the epicardium, or visceral pericardium since it is also the inner wall of the pericardium. The middle layer is called the myocardium and is composed of muscle which contracts. The inner layer is called the endocardium and is in contact with the blood that the heart pumps. The human heart has four chambers, two superior atria and two inferior ventricles. The atria are the receiving chambers and the ventricles are the discharging chambers. The right ventricle discharges into the lungs to oxygenate the blood. The left ventricle discharges its blood toward the rest of the body via the aorta. The pathway of blood through the human heart consists of a pulmonary circuit and a systemic circuit. Blood flows through the heart www.thenewsyneighbor.com

in one direction, from the atria to the ventricles, and out of the great arteries, or the aorta for example. This is done by four valves which are the tricuspid valve, the mitral valve, the aortic valve, and the pulmonary valve. The Heart works as a pump moving blood around in our bodies to nourish every cell. Used blood, that is blood that has already been to the cells and has given up its nutrients to them, is drawn from the body by the right half of the heart, and then sent to the lungs to be re-oxygenated. Blood that has been re-oxygenated by the lungs is drawn into the left side of the heart and then pumped into the blood stream. It is the atria that draw the blood from the lungs and body, and the ventricles that pump it to the lungs and body. The output of each ventricle per beat is about 70 ml, or about 2 tablespoons. Each time the heart beats; it exerts a pressure on the veins and arteries called blood pressure. Blood pressure is extremely important and must be controlled if it is too high or low. The heart muscle is the toughest and strongest muscle in the human body. It is almost impossible to strain it if it is in a healthy condition. But you must look after your precious heart, a healthy diet, regular exercise, reducing stress, and not smoking can greatly reduce your risk of a heart attack. Did you know that being overweight is one of the greatest health hazards? Being overweight more than any other factor usually causes degenerative disease of the heart and arteries. For every 5 pounds of extra fat you carry, your blood vessels have had to increase 3 miles in length. This increased length puts an extra strain on the heart. Take care of your heart this Christmas Season – try not to eat too much, stress too much, smoke too much, and have a nice long walk every single day if you can. Remember: Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness. ~ Edward Stanley

Christmas T

Family Pages

he tradition of decorating an evergreen tree at Christmas started in Germany in the 16th century and the Christmas tree was a symbol of the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden. Ingeborg Weber-Kellermann (Marburg professor of European ethnology) found a Breman guild chronicle from 1570 which reports how a small tree was decorated with "apples, nuts, dates, pretzels and paper flowers" and erected in the guild-house, for the benefit of the children, who collected the dainties on Christmas Day. Brunswick soldiers, stationed in the Province of Quebec, introduced the Christmas tree to Canada in the winter of 1781. General Friedrich Adolf Riedesel and his wife, the Baroness von Riedesel, held a Christmas Party and delighted their guests with a fir tree decorated with candles and fruit. Who would have thought the Christmas tree tradition in Canada came from the Germans?! I love Christmas and especially my Christmas tree. It is tradition in our house to set up the tree the first weekend of December. The kids all used to come over and help decorate, but now that they are older with homes of their own, it is now up to my husband and myself to enjoy the evening decorating the tree – it’s just not as fun as it use to be. Children love Christmas trees... it could be because of the anticipation of all the presents under them Christmas morning. I personally love a Christmas tree because of the warmth and ambience it gives the room. Christmas is a very special time to spend with your children, to put on some Christmas music and make an evening celebration out of putting up your tree. I have included a couple of fun and easy decorations the whole family can create together. May you have everlasting memories making great decorations for your own tree. Merry Christmas!

LAYERED CHRISTMAS TREE

COFFEE FILTER ANGEL

All you need is a bag of Jumbo Craft Sticks, some brown acrylic paint, three different shades of green felt, gold felt, scissors, felt glue and any colored yarn. Paint the craft stick brown and set aside to dry. Cut the green felt into triangles and the gold felt into the star shape. Glue the felt triangles to the stick starting at the bottom and glue the star to the top of the tree. Fold the yarn into a loop and glue to the back of the stick and there you have it your first homemade tree decoration. You could add sequins, beads, glitter, sprinkles or anything else you can think of. Use your imagination.

Everyone has coffee filters laying around the house and you can make a pretty little angel for your tree using just a few simple items and your imagination. You need three basket style coffee filters a couple cotton balls some silver or gold ribbon – white or gold chenille stems, scissors and a hot glue gun. Place two cotton balls in the center of the coffee filter and fold the filter around the cotton balls to make the head. Place a second coffee filter onto the open end tucking the filter in a bit into the head area to produce a layered effect for the dress. Take the third filter and fold it in half, then fold the filter up lengthwise accordion style. Wrap a white chenille stem around the center, and then fan out the wings. Fold the excess chenille into a loop for your hanger and twist together at the end. Make a halo from the gold chenille and glue it to the back of the angel – positioning it above the head. Glue the wings in place behind the angel, hiding the gold chenille from the halo. It may sound complicated, but once you get started you will see how easily it all comes together. Decorate the angel with glitter, sequins or anything else you can think of. – Use your imagination

The Christmas Maze

I think you would need a pretty big room for this Christmas game – but it could be truly interesting and comical. Grab your self a few balls of yarn – tie a gift to the end of the yard and hide it – now the fun part – unwind the ball completely, passing it around table legs, under furniture and in and out of objects as you unwind. Tie a pencil to the remaining end of the yarn. Repeat this process for each player. Crisscross the strings and make it as complicated as possible. Sounds like a lot of work to me – but it sure would be fun to watch your guests as they follow the yard to find their gift. This would be really fun at a company party – I can only imagine! NOW FOR SOMETHING A LITTLE LESS STRENUOUS Give each guest a piece of paper with a Christmas phrase written across the top. Then everyone has ten minutes to list, as many words as they can think of that are associated with Christmas, using only the letters in the Christmas phrase. The person with the longest list wins. You could use phrases such as Christmas tree, Deck the Halls, Frosty the Snowman etc. – use your imagination.

Did you ever think you could make your own Marshmallows – better than the ones in the store – and no chemicals? Here is the recipe and it is really quite simple. Maybe a new Christmas tradition.

MARSHMALLOWS

Combine 3 cups white sugar, 1/4-cup corn syrup, 3/4-cup water and 1/4 teaspoon of salt in a pan and heat until mixture forms a soft ball in cold water or registers 240 degrees using a thermometer. Remove from heat and beat until stiff. Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla and pour into pan, which has been buttered, then dust with icing sugar. Cut into squares when mixture holds its By: Kathryn Hartwell shape, then dust with more icing sugar.

Have the most incredible family Christmas and take care of yourself and your loved ones this Holiday Season!

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE HUMAN TOUCH IN A By: Jim Mcllhargey DRIVE THROUGH WORLD One of the strongest human instincts is that of self preservation. The next strongest instinct is love. We all want and need to be loved, and appreciated. We all want and need affection. It is a part of our make up as human beings. It is instinctual. I’m going to tell you 2 stories that I think exemplify the power of human kindness. When we take this power with us to the marketplace each day, miraculous things can happen.

STORY # 1

Wellington Mara was the owner of the New York Giants football team. He passed away in 2005. He was a very wealthy man, who received accolades for returning letters that he received, no matter who they were from. Every letter ever sent to him, from President Ronald Reagan, to prisoners in the penitentiary, he responded to with a hand written letter. This is not an activity that has been replicated by any owner, of any professional sports franchise that I am aware of. He responded to letters of anger, as well as letters of praise. When prisoners wrote to him angered by a recent loss, he actually took the time to sit down and explain the direction they were attempting to take the team. He would explain why decisions were made. And when he wrote these letters to anyone with a complaint, he didn’t finish the letter, with Best Regards Wellington Mara, not with Sincerely, Wellington Mara. He finished with “In sadness more than anger,” Wellington Mara. This activity let everyone he wrote to know 2 things. First, that their opinion mattered to him. And second, that his passion and disappointment in the recent loss was as profound as theirs was. This quality created a following and a respect that is difficult for me to express in words. Wellington was a man that understood the value of pure human contact. He understood that a kind word, a little genuine compassion, is a powerful, powerful thing. At Mr. Mara’s funeral many famous people gave heart felt eulogies. One that got my attention was given by Frank Gifford. Frank recalled what Wellington had said, when he presented Frank at his induction to the N.F.L. hall of fame. Gifford said, “Wellington turned to me in his address as my presenter and introduced me, “as a man any father would be proud to have as a son.” In his eulogy to Wellington, Mr. Gifford retuned the compliment by saying that “Wellington was a man any son would be proud to have as a father.” What Mr. Mara did was by no means a small thing. It was an incredibly arduous, and time consuming process, to return what had to be hundreds of letters. The results of his efforts however, were profound. He was loved and respected by heads of state, millionaires, and welfare recipients alike, simply because he showed everyone the same level of courtesy. We live in an era of drive through restaurants, drive through coffee shops, drive through banks, and even drive through liquor stores. We live in an era of big box stores. We live in a fast food, fast paced, impersonal world. No one seems to find it difficult to let us know when we make a mistake. Everyone will let you know immediately, and in no uncertain terms when you “goof up.” Rarely, do they let you know when you do something terrific. Maybe it should start with you. Maybe you should tell a co- worker how wonderful you think they are. Maybe you should thank that customer that is always pleasant to deal with. You know who they are, but have you ever told them how much you appreciate them? How do you think that small act of kindness would make them feel? How would it make you feel?

STORY # 2

When I was about 11 or 12, I started spending a couple of weeks each summer with my grandmother in Edmonton. My grandfather had passed away, and my parents told me she was lonely, and it would be nice for her to have some company. The truth is I think my parents just Page 18

wanted a break from me, and my grandmother was kind enough to give it to them. Which ever is true, for several years I spent the last 2 weeks of July in Edmonton. I made friends in Edmonton very quickly. In fact right next door was a family with 3 kids, one girl and two boys. The youngest boy, David, became my best friend in Edmonton. We played football, baseball, basketball, you name it. If I arrived in Edmonton, and David wasn’t home, all I had to do was go around the corner to the school, and that’s where he would be, playing baseball or football with all the guys. We were playing baseball at the school one day, when a man came over to speak to us. He had a boy with him that was about our age. The boy had some sort of handicap. I don’t know what it was, nor did I care at the time. The gentleman asked if his son could play. He told us his son had never played baseball, but would love to try. David said, “Sure our side is one guy short anyway, he’s next up.” I will be kind in my explanation, but it was clear very rapidly that this boy (Randy) was never going to hit that ball. One of the other boys had a soccer ball there, so he went and got it, and used that as a ball. He got real close, and pitched it underhand, and after a few tries, Randy hit it. Well his dad started screaming, “Run Randy run!” Randy ran to first base, and the first baseman deliberately missed the ball when it was tossed to him. Randy’s dad screamed, “Run to second, Randy, run to second!” The same thing continued, and Randy made it to 3rd. We were nice kids, but we weren’t about to give anybody a home run. The next boy up hit him home. Randy played with us for about a half hour or so, and then his dad said it was time to go home. He thanked us, and off they went. A few days later he was back and played again, and was treated in a similar fashion. I don’t remember how many times Randy played with us, but in my memory, it was no more than 2 or 3 times. When I went back the following summer, we were playing ball at the school one day, and I noticed Randy’s dad sitting in his car watching us. I waved at him, and he waved back and drove away. I asked David where Randy was, and he said “Oh, he died.”I didn’t think about it a whole lot at the time. I was only 12 or 13 years old. But when I think back about it now, how sad must it have been for Randy’s dad, to watch us in the school play ground playing ball. But in that sadness, I wonder if sometimes there wasn’t just a bit of contentment, when he thinks back to Randy’s triple. I can’t imagine the pain of loosing a child. I wonder if Randy’s dad smiles when he remembers the laughter of his son when he rounded those bases for the first time. I wonder what he thinks about the kids who made sure it wasn’t the only time. We were just kids being kids, but I think (at least to Randy’s dad) we were a little more than that. All we did was show a little kindness to another human being. I never saw Randy’s dad again, but I will bet that he still drives past that school. I will bet that he still feels the pain. And I will bet that at least some of the time, when he thinks back, he smiles. AND HOW HUGE IS THAT? None of us ever really got to know Randy or his dad, but I think it’s safe to say, we impacted their lives in a meaningful way. What we did was very insignificant, but the result was not insignificant. Mother Teresa once said, “In this life we cannot always do great things, but you can do small things with great love.” And the Dali Lama once said, “Be kind whenever possible.” “It’s always possible.” When you begin each day, coming from a place of kindness, you may not always see your accomplishments, BUT THEY WILL BE MANY! One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex was staring up at the large plaque that hung in the foyer of the church. It was covered with names, and small American flags were mounted on either side of it. The seven-yearold had been staring at th e plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the boy, and said quietly, “Good morning, Alex.” “Good morning,” replied the young man, still focused on the plaque. “What is this?” Alex asked. “Well, son, it’s a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service.” Soberly, they stood together, staring at the large plaque. Little Alex’s voice was trembling and barely audible when he asked, “Which service, the 9:45 or the 11:15?”

The Langdon School Playground Committee (PGC) is working on implementing playground and sports facility improvements at Langdon School valued at $1.2 million. Segment I is now complete and fundraising for Segment II is underway. With approximately 600 students age 7-12, Langdon School desperately requires a senior playground for around 200 children (1/3 of the student population). The proposed design is endorsed by students, parents, staff and community members and has the benefit of ramps and activities for children of all ability levels. In addition to the senior play area, Segment II includes the development of the pathway system to further promote wheelchair and walker accessibility to the school grounds. With segment II costs at $450,000, the PGC is focusing on the Aviva Community Fund competition. The PGC has entered the Aviva contest in hopes of winning $450K and completing Segment II next year. From December 2nd – 15th projects from across Canada will compete in the semifinals of the online competition, and the PGC is urging people to vote daily. Anyone that is a permanent Canadian resident or citizen of Canada (regardless of age) can register and vote on the Aviva Community Fund website with a valid email address. Each email is allowed 10 votes for the entire round and the PGC is hoping that families will vote daily for every member of their household. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, friends, coworkers and children are all encouraged to register and vote. To register an email address, go to www.votelangdon.ca and click on Register. You will need to confirm your registration in a subsequent email from Aviva. From DECEMBER 2nd – 15th, simply sign-in with your email address and password that you registered with and click on Vote Now. Help the Langdon Community in this worthwhile endeavor by voting DAILY!!! 10 Biggest Myths about Christmas Trees Myth 1 – Real trees are cut down from forests

To be accurate, in a few locations; around North America the Forest Service sells permits for people to harvest wild trees. They do this in places to create fire breaks. But it is a very tiny percentage of all trees used. Most trees come from a farm where someone plants them. And each year, growers plant on to three seedlings for each tree harvested.

‘Best Selection’

FRESH CUT TREES

Lodgepole Pine, Nordman Fir, Balsam Fir, Douglas Fir and Fraser Fir

Myth 2 – You save a tree by using a fake tree

This is tied to myth 1. There are ads for fake trees that say “save a tree” of course this is false. The trees are planted in crops by farmers to use specifically as Christmas Trees. Close to half a billion trees are currently growing on tree farms in the U.S. alone. The really ironic part of the ad for the fake tree is one of the selling points is that it comes in a sturdy cardboard box. Uhhh how is that saving a tree?

Myth 3 – Real Christmas Trees aggravate allergies.

A summary of sources ( Asthma and Immunology, National Institute of Environmental Health and Science ) claim that while it is possible to be allergic to tree pollen or even tree sap, it’s not as wide spread as many believe. We have read that in rare cases, people can have an allergy to certain species of tree sap. As for pollens, which certainly can be an allergen to people, a real tree itself is unlikely to produce pollen during December, or even if it did, pollens from pines are not a known allergen. Most allergies are specific to one tree. But being outdoors for years in a field, a Christmas Tree can collect pollens, dust mould or other allergens. Of course so can an artificial tree stored in the attic or the basement. If you are sensitive to any of these things, you could spray the tree down in the yard with a hose before putting it up. Let it dry completely before bringing it indoors. Myth 4 – It is better to use a fake tree because you can re-use it. That is a very short sighted perspective. According to research, most fake trees are only used for 6-9 years before they are disposed. Even if you would use one for 20 years or more, it will eventually be thrown away and end up in a landfill, and unlike real trees, which are biodegradable and recyclable, fake trees are always a burden to the environment.

Myth 5 – Christmas Trees are a fire safety hazard .

You would certainly think so by watching the local “action news” on tv. Each year, an image gets shown on TV of a tree bursting into flames. Intending to scare people. The reality is, a tree being accidently ignited is EXTREAMLY rare. As in 0.0004% -- Those images of trees burning? They are often aided by gas or lighter fluid.

Myth 6 – Real Trees cost too much.

Like anything else, you can find a wide range of prices, and spend what you want to spend. It all depends on what you are looking for. Prices vary by many variables including: type of tree, size, shape etc.

Myth 7 – Fake trees are fireproof.

Uh no – they are not. They catch fire every year. According to a report from the National Fire Protection Association, 28% of home fires involving a Christmas tree were a fake one. Myth 8 – Real Christmas trees have pesticides and chemicals on them. Christmas tree farmers do not use chemicals in a “harmful” manner. chemicals are used ONLY when needed and ONLY according to the specified instructions and regulation for the FDA. Christmas tree farmers live on their land and raise their families there. They would not engage in activity that would put their families, employees or the people they sell to in harm’s way. To suggest otherwise is at best uninformed and worst www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Myth 9 – Real Christmas Trees end up in landfills.

Christmas Tree recycling programs are available nationwide, and many are quite creative. A farm-grown Christmas Tree is 100% biodegradable, so it can be used for all kinds of things in nature, from mulch to erosion control. Fake tree? See myth #4 – Most communities have curb side pick up as part of their recycling program. They are not being “thrown in the trash” or ending up in landfills.

Myths 10 – Real Christmas Trees are a hassle and a mess.

- It’s all relative. The first thing to ask someone if they say “I don’t want a real tree because I might have to vacuum up needles” is this: Does that mean you don’t vacuum normally? I mean, vacuuming should be a regular household chore all year long. So what if the tree drops some needles... you are going to vacuum anyways right? - Second, who says it has to be a hassle? There are many places to buy a tree and all offers something a little different. (We have the best trees, so they don’t need to go anywhere else!! ) We offer different types, and all at different costs. Third, there are many different types of tree stands. There are funnels, cleverly designed to blend into the tree, that make adding water easier. Round mats with waterproof backing to put under the stand so if water drops, it doesn’t stain the floor.

Having a pet that urinates when and where they shouldn’t is tough. Pinpointing the reason brings you closer to a solution, thus reducing the frequency and the odor. Here are 3 of the most common reasons for inappropriate urination. Poor House Training---If you pet has come from a shelter, you’ll probably never know went on with house breaking before you came on the scene. But unfortunately this can have drastic. For instance, I was talking with a lady the other day who said her husband trained their dog to think he was a bad dog if he urinated in the yard. As a result the dog would need to

Your Pets

www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Pet Pages

PET

be taken on a walk to empty its bladder, or when it couldn’t hold it any longer, it would urinate in the house, which made the dog an even worse dog in her husband’s eyes. A poorly trained dog is often the result of human error and the pet’s behavior is hard to undo once learned. Unless you are extremely experienced at correcting this kind of behavior, seeking professional help to undo the damage is the best way to proceed. If, on the other hand, you are getting a brand new puppy, hopefully the story above will make you aware of how important proper training is. Most pets want to please, and when you set the rules so that they can, it makes a happier, healthier relationship between owner and pet; and a cleaner smelling home because you and your pet are on the same page when it comes to appropriate elimination. Illness---Many times pets can have an underlying illness that has not been diagnosed that is causing frequent and/ or uncontrolled urination. Some illnesses that can cause this to happen include bladder infection, diabetes, a blocked urethra, feline leukemia, Vulvovaginal Stenosis in female dogs, and incontinence in older dogs. One of the side effects of steroids is that they cause pets to drink more which increases their need to urinate; and without a way to let themselves out of the house or enclosure, this can cause accidents to happen inside. Have a veterinarian give your pet a thorough exam to rule out the possibility of an illness causing the behavior. Behavioral---Many pets, particularly dogs engage in submissive urination. This is their way of letting you know that you’re the alpha in the group. This behavior can be genetic, or it can be the reaction of a pet that is afraid, anxious, or one that has been scolded frequently by its owner. It can also be the result of one of the physical issues discussed earlier in this article. So now that you know why, the question is what can be done about it. If you scold when it is happening, it is likely to continue to occur. If you reward the deed with positive words or actions, it will definitely continue. So probably the best immediate reaction is to ignore the behavior and get professional help to correct the behavior. Understanding what’s causing the problem gets you closer to an effective solution for urine odor. And by minimizing the odor you can enjoy your home and your pet to the fullest.

IAM A BRUSSEL SPROUT Hello my name is Becky Brussel and I am a Brussels Sprout. I am a mystery because no one really knows where I came from. The first mention of my cousins can be traced to the late 16th century. We think we came from Belgium, specifically to a region near its capital, Brussels, after which we are named. We spread across Europe during World War I, and now we are cultivated throughout Europe and the United States. In the U.S., almost all Brussels sprouts are grown in California. We are a member of the Brassica family and our kin are broccoli and cabbage. We are just like a little miniature cabbage and we grow in bunches of 20 to 40 on the stem of a plant that grows as high as three feet tall – bet you didn’t know that. There has been nearly 100 studies found in the research database, that are focused on us and the scientists have found because we are a cruciferous vegetable we can help to prevent cancer. We supply special nutrient support for three of your body systems that are closely connected with cancer development as well as cancer prevention. These three systems are (1) the body's detox system, (2) its antioxidant system, and (3) its inflammatory/anti-inflammatory system. When any of these are out of balance it can cause an increase risk of cancer, and if all three are out of balance the risk of cancer increases significantly. We are helpful in the prevention of bladder cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, and ovarian cancer. Wow, you really should eat us. We don’t mind we like to be helpful and keep you healthy. That’s our purpose in life. We are full of glucosinolates, Sulfur-containing nutrients, excellent source of vitamin C, beta-carotene and manganese, and vitamin E. We also contain a wide variety of antioxidant phytonutrients, including many antioxidant flavonoids. It is very important not to overcook us; we lose our nutritional value and taste. Cut us into quarters and let us sit for 5 minutes to bring out our health-promoting qualities and then steam us for 5 minutes. Serve with Honey Mustard Dressing - Yummy. There are tonnes of ways to enjoy my brothers and me – so I have included a few really good recipes and ideas that you can make for your Christmas dinner or any old time. Have the most wonderful Christmas season and eat Brussels sprouts as your New Year By Kathryn Hartwell Resolution.

CHRISTMAS AT THE FARM “Mommy!” His little voice shouts in delight, “I’ve been working so hard from morning till night. Because I’m making something pretty for you, Nana gave me paint and markers, paper and glue. I have glitter and buttons and this colourful feather, I’ll use some red string to tie everything together. We have snowflakes to decorate, Popcorn to eat as we celebrate, Christmas this year will be really great, Oh Mommy, I can hardly wait! Our excitement is growing, The Christmas tree is glowing. Look out the window, Hurray! It’s snowing! Papa, let’s get out the sleigh And decorate it with lights. Soon the family will arrive To ride and sing on this Christmas Eve night. We’ll open our gifts we give to each other, We’ll thank our aunts and uncles And our fathers and mothers. We’ll hug and kiss our sisters and brothers. Then we must head straight off to bed, For the children must be asleep Before Santa Claus and his reindeer arrive Without making a sound or a peep. We’ll soon know if we’ve been good girls and boys, For Christmas morning we’ll all have new toys That bark and bang and make plenty of noise. Later we’ll sit down to a meal that is delicious, Turkey and stuffing and everything nutritious. We’ll offer up our thanks to God, for we’ve been truly Blessed, With love and a family that is the very best! BY PATRICIA MULLIN www.thenewsyneighbor.com

What do you mean by $500

An introvert went to bar and spots a pretty looking woman sitting on the stool. He mustered all his courage for long time, then timidly approached and asked her, “Ma’ am, would be OK if sit here and talk with you?” She was alert, suspecting this man, and responds by yelling, “No, I won’t sleep with you tonight!” Customers in the bar started staring at them. The embarrassed guy quickly returns to his table dejected and ashamed. The young woman waits a little and then goes to the guy to apologize. With a smile on her face she says, “I am sorry if I embarrassed you. You see, I am a college student in psychiatry and I am putting together a thesis as to how people react to embarrassing moments.” The cunning guy now yells loudly, “What do you mean by $500?”

My Favourite – Fabulous – Fantastic and Fun Stuff As this is our Christmas Issue, I thought I would include some Christmas quotes. Christmas seems to be a time of reflection for people; a time family and friends. Some of these quotes may bring into prospective what is really important in our lives. Never worry about the size of your Christmas tree. In the eyes of children, they are all 30 feet tall. ~Larry Wilde I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirit in jars and open a jar of it every month.” ~Harlan Miller The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other.” ~Burton Hillis “Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone.” ~ Charles Schulz Christmas gift suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect.” ~ Oren Arnold A Christmas candle is a lovely thing; It makes no noise at all, But softly gives itself away; While quite unselfish, it grows small.” ~ Eva K. Logue

Great ideas come to me when I

least expect it. Normally when I’m just dozing off to sleep and I think, “that is a good idea – I’ll remember that in the morning!” But I don’t remember and I don’t even remember I had the great idea! Therefore, now I get up (no matter what time it is) and I write it down. My next problem is remembering where I wrote it! This article idea was one of those great ideas. We all have favourite, fabulous and fantastic things we love and want to share with other people. An idea, poem, story, joke, experience, craft or anything else you can think of – use your imagination. Our magazine is about reader participation; we always love to hear from you, and after all, without all of our loyal readers, this magazine would not be possible.

Have the best Christmas Season ever! And, because it is Christmas here are two great ideas for your Christmas Cocktail Party! How To Make Cucumber Shot Glasses ~ Cucumber shot glasses can be used for gazpacho servings, or mini-Bloody Marys. The coolness of the cucumber makes it idea for clear alcohols, like vodka or gin based drinks. 1. Take a long, English cucumber and rinse it. You can peel it, if you prefer a paler look. 2. Slice threeinch “logs” width-wise along the cucumber. 3. Use a small melon-baller, and remove the soft, seedy core – remember to leave at least a halfinch of cucumber at the base so that alcohol does not seep through the bottom. Sweet Liqueur Shot Glasses ~ For the guest who enjoys a shot of Bailey’s, Drambuie or any liqueur that is cream-based or just sweet, try making a shot glass out of something you may already own: flat-bottomed ice cream cones. To ensure that the cones will not become soggy when alcohol is poured, hardened melted chocolate provides a protective layer that also flavours the liqueur. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

IS THE NORTH POLE MOVING? WHERE IS SANTA GOING TO LIVE? In 2001, the North Magnetic Pole was determined by the Geological Survey of Canada to lie near Ellesmere Island in northern Canada at 81°18’N 110°48’W81.3°N 110.8°W. It was estimated to be at 82°42’N 114°24’W82.7°N 114.4°W in 2005. In 2009, it was moving toward Russia at almost 40 miles (64 km) per year due to magnetic changes in the Earth’s core. The magnetic north pole had moved little from the time scientists first located it in 1831. Then in 1904, the pole began shifting northeastward at a steady pace of about 9 miles (15 kilometers) a year. In 1989 it sped up again, and in 2007 scientists confirmed that the pole is now galloping toward Siberia at 34 to 37 miles (55 to 60 kilometers) a year. Over the past century the pole has moved 685 miles (1,100 kilometers) from Arctic Canada toward Siberia. At its current rate the pole could move to Siberia within the next half-century. We’re seeing something that hasn’t happened for at least 500 years. The north magnetic pole shifts constantly, in loops up to 80 kilometers (50 miles) wide each day. The recorded location of the pole is really an average of its daily treks, which are driven by fluctuations in solar radiation. The first readings of the north magnetic pole date to 1831, when Sir John Ross and his ship searching for the Northwest Passage became ice-bound. To pass the time he sent out a team with a compass to take readings, and the team soon found a dipole—an area with compass readings pointing both north and south—in what is now Nunavut. It was the north magnetic pole. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Brilliant Green Solutions HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR TREES GET THROUGH THIS WINTER ACTIONS TO TAKE: Don’t role up the hose! Trees are desperate for a drink of water.

S

ince the 2010 September full moon that told the deciduous leaf trees to drop off their leaves there has been a drought for lack of water. Leaf trees need to be watered in, in order to hold in place the soil and roots. Each tree need many pounds of water to anchor the plant from wind blow down. Water only when the temperature is above freezing for a least 20 minutes in the root zone. Evergreens, our coniferous trees are desperate for a drink of water – right now as soon as possible – in order to keep them healthy and alive. Healthy watered trees have up to 3 years of needles. Stressed tree have only one to two years of needles. On a day above freezing use a sprinkler to water lightly the whole area under the branches to watering more heavily 2-3 feet out side the branch ends. Water first for 20 minutes, wait 20 minutes and then water the area just outside the end of the branches for 30 - 40 minutes. Water less in heavy soil and more in sandy soil. As winter progresses “Snow Farm” with light dry snow

in and around the trees. Place the snow from one foot from the trunk to just past under the ends of the branches. Snow Farm as often as you can to slow down early growth in the spring by keeping the tree roots cool and to ensure needed water latter. Wrap dark and red barked tree trunks especially facing south with corrugated card board to prevent Sun Scald. Sun Scald will split the trunk on the east, south and west sides. Damage occurs most often in the early to late spring. The reflection of the snow with the direct sun on the trunk causes the bark to split. Once spring is finally here and the trees are past frost, the feed for new trees (3 to 5 years old) is 10-50-10 by Shultz or Plant Prod - half strength. Apply at the Drip Line. The Drip Line is the ground under the ends of the tree’s branches or otherwise known as the edge of the tree’s canopy. Older established trees (6yrs or older) feed half strength 30-10-10 fertilizer by Shultz or Plants Prod. After, the Full Moon of July feed half strength no nitrogen 0-10-10 fertilizer by Pacific Fish. Reminder, do not feed nitrogen after the full moon in July on trees and shrubs. Apply fertilizer at the drip line. Remember to water and feed at the Drip Line that is directly under the ends of the branches. Do not water close to the trunk unless the tree is just newly planted. Could Vitamin D save 37,000 lives a year? A Canadian study estimates that increased vitamin D blood levels would reduce incidence of a variety of conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, multiple sclerosis, pneumonia and cancer. The researchers also say increasing levels of the vitamin among Canadians would save Canada’s health system about $14.4 billion. The study notes that most Canadians don’t have anywhere near enough vitamin D stored in their bodies. Statistics Canada reports that 10% of Canadians have “inadequate” levels of the vitamin. The study estimates that the benefits of increased vitamin D levels would include:

• decreased cancer rates of 25% by increasing national vitamin D levels • lowered risk of cardiovascular disease • 60% improvement in insulin sensitivity • reduced risk of Cesarean section by 50% • improved fetal development • reduced risk of developing multiple sclerosis and reduced symptoms in those already diagnosed • reduced risk of pneumonia by 30% The result of this study strongly suggests the personal and economic burden of disease in Canada could be significantly reduced if optimal vitamin D levels are increased,” said William B. Grant, the primary author of the study. The sun is the best source for vitamin D, but because of the climate, most Canadians can’t produce vitamin D from the sun for as long as six months of the year. Because diet alone cannot provide enough vitamin D, most experts now recommend supplements and sensible sun exposure when possible. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

MORE JUICING Last month I wrote an article all about how good juicing was for you. Hopefully, some of you have started using your juicer again! The best time to drink your fresh juices is on an empty stomach—at least half an hour before a meal. This is when your stomach hungers for food and would pounce on anything you consume. As a general rule, drink fruit juices mostly in the morning or at the start of your day as it provides the complex carbohydrates to fuel energy. If you are new to juicing, try to start with the fruits you enjoy eating. Start with the more common fruits first which are easier on your stomach, like apples, oranges or watermelons. After juicing these fruits a few times and you feel ready to add something new to your menu, try adding carrot juice, celery, cucumber or beet. On lazy days, I like to juice one carrot, one apple, one tomato and one orange altogether. These have all the best ingredients that when combined, provide a synergy of the nutrients which are powerful in keeping me at my peak. And they taste delicious. The combination of fresh carrot and spinach is an excellent help in cleansing the blood of impurities, with their superb anti-oxidant virtues. Juice a medium-sized carrot with a bunch of spinach. Drink regularly. Below are some recipes of the fruits and vegetables that are very effective for eliminating toxins from the liver. You can also try juicing or eating combinations of parsley, alfalfa sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, strawberries and wheatgrass. Beets are an extremely efficient liver cleaner, but because it is also very potent, drink juice from one medium sized beetroot once a week.

Cucumber is great for removing toxins but is also very cooling; so do not drink too much cucumber juice, especially if you are a woman. Once a week, juice one medium-sized beet and one small or half a medium-sized cucumber. This combination is highly detoxifying and cleansing on the liver. Carrots effectively eliminate toxins from the liver, with healing properties to heal damaged cells in the liver from toxicity. Kale (or collards) and celery have high content of chlorophyll, vitamins A, C and E that are necessary for liver problems. Juice and drink regularly, one-medium sized carrot, a small bunch of kale and one rib of celery. The superior content of vitamins A, B complex and C in apples and oranges make these fruits essential in promoting the normal function of liver. Spinach is rich in its chlorophyll content and is a great blood cleanser. Juice and drink one medium sized apple and orange, and a small bunch of spinach. Until next time – drink your juice – and remember the greatest wealth in health. By: Kathryn Hartwell www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Health & Beauty Price in the cosmetic industry is an indication of nothing. Just because you pay more money for something doesn’t guarantee that it works any better than the next product. Every product is unique.

Green Tea is one of those ingredients that has credible research backing its effectiveness as an antioxidant on your skin. So you want a product that gives you the best results for the money you pay. Check to see how far down on the ingredients list it appears. The higher on the list, the higher the percentage the product contains “I was introduced to Youth Juice about five weeks before training camp with the Calgary Flames. I can't tell you how much YJ helped me and how amazing I felt the moment I started taking it. Youth Juice helped me to take my fitness to the next level, I lost 10lbs which helped me at the age of 41, finish 11th overall in fitness testing at the opening of training camp, beating out guys half my age. My life is hectic and I need the energy to sustain me through the day. Youth Juice gives me the boost that I need. This is an amazing product! So amazing that both my wife Jennifer and daughter Skylah are also taking it. Get on the program and remember "Don't Quit Before The Miracle.”

Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais My name is Derek Donais. I live in a small town outside of Calgary, Alberta, Canada with my wife of eleven wonderful years, Connie, and our two beautiful children, Kieran—age six, and Maia-Lynn—age four. I’ve been a teacher for nearly a decade and before that I was a police officer for two years. I’ve always been a fan of fantasy and science-fiction and I started writing my own stories seriously about ten years ago. I’ve written two fantasy novels so far, and after encouragement from a mentoring author, among others, I decided to self-publish the second work. After some careful research into self-publishers, I opted to go with my present publisher, Wheatmark Books. It’s been a great experience and MetalMagic, the first in the planned trilogy, has received excellent support and feedback so far. I’m working on a sequel, and time will tell which route it takes to publication.

MetalMagic: Talisman

Derek Donais Wheatmark Books, September 2010 Fiction/Fantasy, 272 Pages ISBN: 9781604943542 (print version) ASIN: B0045Y2686 (Kindle ebook version)

“This month, Derek has invited fellow author Tod Langley to provide a review of MetalMagic: Talisman. Next month, Derek reviews Outliers: The Story of Success, by Malcolm Gladwell. Thanks for reading!”

Derek Donais’ initial entry into Fantasy Fiction is a heartfelt, adrenaline-laced adventure that gives readers what they want while providing keen insights. The book’s first chapter introduces readers to the main character, an inquisitive boy who wants to understand Metanduil and its link to those that are gifted enough to use the alloy to perform magic. Jaren’s sister, Morgaine, has the ability to use the magic metal but Jaren does not, despite the increasing connection he feels to the magic. An immediate conflict emerges between Jaren, Morgaine, and another gifted village girl. It is a conflict that forces the brother and sister to leave everything behind in search of refuge. However, the pair is chased across the land by sinister agents, as they have determined that Morgaine has the potential to become a truly powerful Valir (someone who wields Metanduil and acts as an advisor to the land’s various kings). The agents are desperate to reach Morgaine and deliver her to a corrupted Valir who has developed a weapon with the potential to destroy kingdoms in a single blow. The Warwitch has already killed one king and her army threatens to overrun the rest of the world. What none of them, including Jaren, realize is that the boy is the most powerful of them all. Jaren can use magic without the use of magic metal, but his first attempt at controlling the power is an utter failure...and without control, Jaren knows that he could destroy everything around him, including those he loves. Donais’ writing style is fluid, while providing outstanding descriptive narrative; it is the kind of writing style that readers of any age should enjoy because the author understands all of the creative elements of a great story: plot, tempo, theme, and mood. Most importantly, MetalMagic has a message for all of us that live in the modern, technically driven world: science and technology are tools, they are neither good nor evil. It is how we, as individuals, decide to use these tools that determine if we are good. The climactic finish kept me on edge for the last hour of reading as I fought beside Donais’ heroes. I could see the instant flashes of magic in a multitude of colors. I could feel the power of the spells. I felt the emotions of Jaren and his sister as they struggled to survive against the Warwitch... This was an outstanding first book for a new voice in Fantasy Fiction. I highly recommend reading this novel and watching Derek Donais over the coming years. I am hoping for many more novels from this writer. Tod Langley

Author, Prince Kristian’s Honor About the guest reviewer: Tod Langley was in the U.S. Army for many years and served on three combat tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He was awarded two bronze stars for his service in Iraq. His love for Fantasy fiction started when he first read Robert E. Howard’s Conan as a boy. He never lost interest in tales of epic adventure and the authors he admires most include Stephen R. Donaldson, George R. R. Martin, and Terry Brooks. He married after graduating from Purdue University and moved across the country while he was in the Army. They now live in Indiana with their three children. Tod is the author of Prince Kristian’s Honor, Book One of the Erinia Saga, released in 2009. The next book in the series, Ferral’s Deathmarch Army, is scheduled for release this December. quoise. December is the month with the shortest daylight hours and the 21st is the 1st official day of winter. Yuk! But in my books it is by far the happiest month of the year. Are you kidding me?! Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Eve – all in one month! Christmas music, presents and lights. Yes, by far the happiest month. But, December over the years has not always been the “happy month” – on December 7th, 1941, before many were even awake, the Japanese Navy struck the United States naval base at Pearl Harbour with a surprising and deadly attack. The very next day the United States became a part of World War II, almost a full year after the 1st Canadian Infantry Division had arrived in Britain on January 1st, 1940 and on May 4th, 1945 World War II was finally ended. John Lennon was shot and killed in New York City on December 8th, 1980 – but Walt Disney was born December 5th, 1901. The first human heart transplant was performed by Chris tiaan Barnard, a South African surgeon on December 3rd, 1967 and Isaac Newton - the English scientist who discovered the law of gravitation was born December 25th, 1642. Sir Mackenzie Bowell, prime minister of Canada from 1894 to 1896 was born December 27th, 1823. And, my number one most favourite Christmas program was shown December 18th, 1966 – How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It is absolutely tradition in our house to watch this show every single December. I love it. On Christmas Day in 1758, Halley’s comet was first sighted by Johann Georg Palitzsch; the most famous of all com ets, having been observed in 1531, 1607, 1682, 1758, 1834, 1910 and 1986. Edmond Halley entered the picture in 1705, realizing that the appearance of the comet in 1682 was the same comet as those observed on the previous two dates listed above. Surmising that the comet was following the same laws, which governed planetary orbits, he calculated the orbit corresponding to a 76-year period and predicted its return in 1758. Though he did not live to see it, the return of the comet in 1758 was a triumph for orbit calculations based on Newton’s laws and led to the naming of the comet after Halley. Subsequent to Halley’s analysis, historical research showed that Halley’s comet had been observed at every passage since 240 BC. Well, December 2010 marks the end of another incredible year in the world, the 10th year of the 3rd millennium of the 21st century. The year of major oil spills, devastating earthquakes and tsunami’s, this can only mean 2011 will be a much better year for the world. Take a moment to look back over your 2010 year and say good-bye; then say hello to 2011 and make the best of each and every day this year!

A small town prosecuting attorney called his first witness to the stand in a trial - a grandmotherly, elderly woman. He approached her and asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know me?” She responded, “Yes, I do know you Mr. Williams. I’ve known you since you were a young boy. And frankly, you’ve been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. “You think you’re a rising big shot when you haven’t the brains to real ize you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.” The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, “Mrs. Williams, do you know the defence attorney?” She again replied, “Why, yes I do. I’ve known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. I used to baby-sit him for his parents. And he, too, has been a real disappointment to me. He’s lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. The man can’t build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the shoddiest in the entire state. Yes, I know him.” At this point, the judge rapped the courtroom to silence and called both counsellors to the bench. In a very quiet voice, he said with menace, “If either of you asks her if she knows me, you’ll be in jail within 3 minutes!”

Dear Family & Friends, Our orphanage - Children for Children’s Future, is in trouble and we need your help. We are volunteering at an orphanage just outside of Arusha, Tanzania. The orphanage was set up in 1994 for street children to come and live and be able to go to school. When the founder of the orphanage passed away, the center went through a series of corrupt managers. Once again we feel that the management at CCF is not looking out for the children’s best interests. Volunteers will no longer be allowed to work with CCF due to the lack of cooperation over money on the management’s part. This means that the children at CCF are going to suffer. A wonderful person has donated funds for all of the kids at CCF to be able to go to school so that basic need has been met. Before the last 2 volunteers leave on September 3, 2010 we want to make sure that their other basic need of food will also be met. The average cost of 1 month of food, including some fruit, vegetables, soap, firewood, etc. is approximately $400USD. The children at CCF have all lived on the street for 1-2yrs at some point in their life. They all say that they are afraid for when volunteers leave because they do not want things to go back to the way they were at CCF where they went days without food, and had to burn bunk beds for firewood to cook. That is an example of how things were at CCF 8 months ago before volunteers were working there. We want these wonderful kids to be able to stay at CCF and finish school but we need your help for money for food to be able to do that. Any donation that you can afford to make will go a long way at CCF. Kate & Tom will directly control and distribute any donations made. We plan to buy one month of food at a time. Reasons for this are to avoid wasting food due to rotting etc. We plan to transfer the money raised for food through the cook, a very trust worthy women. The cooks best interests are for the kids and you can be assured that your donation will go towards food for the kids. If you are able to donate we are asking that you visit our blog at http://helpuus.blogspot.com. Please help us if you are able. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email us ccfdonations@gmail.com. Thank you to all of you for your support over the last few months. Katie Nord & Tom Kuperus

Dear Lifelines, My friend’s mother passed away during the Christmas season a couple years ago. After all this time she still seems to hate the holidays and doesn’t seem over her mother’s death. How can I help? Signed, Hopeful for the holidays Dear Hopeful, Grieving is such an individual experience, but the belief is that we all go through the process of healing in our own time. The experience of grief isn’t limited to only death either, we grieve relationship losses, job losses, and anything that is meaningful to us such as graduation and retirement. The belief that time heals hurt is simply untrue – healing is an active process that requires involvement regardless of the amount of time that has passed. It’s like having a sliver that you can’t get out. In time your skin heals over it, yet it’s still there and can resurface and become a problem again when that particular area is disturbed. If you don’t engage in healing, that pain will remain in you regardless of the amount of time. It will then undoubtedly reveal itself in some form in the future catching you off guard because you had assumed that you were ‘over it’. It’s important to remember that we need to actually choose recovery in order to move beyond any painful rut that we might be stalling out in, no matter how eagerly those around want us to go through the motions and return to ‘normal’. The best way you can respond to your friend is to be supportive by behaving in a very non-judgmental way. I will never forget losing my grandfather in junior high and after returning to school having a little weep in the hallway. I was called into the office by the principal who suggested that after 2 weeks since his passing, I shouldn’t be emotional anymore. Well I guess you can’t get any less supportive than that! Assuming that someone should be ‘healed’ by a certain point considering the time that has passed is just not a supportive approach to take. Just remember grief and healing is all individual and there shouldn’t be any unrealistic expectations. Having associations between painful (or joyful) events and certain seasons, holidays or times of the year is very normal. Those associations can last for years unless you actively engage in promoting some change in that area. One book that you might recommend to your friend if she is open to it is The Grief Recovery Handbook by John W. James and Russell Friedman. There are wonderful tips and suggestions for active learning when dealing with grief. It’s a book we could all benefit from in reviewing in order to be more responsive to others and better prepared for our own future coping. Lifelines

OAS Clawback? You’re better off than you think The financial planning media devote a significant amount of time and space to the subject of the Old Age Security (OAS) clawback. The truth, however, is that it doesn’t affect the vast majority of seniors. In fact, if you’re subject to the clawback, congratulations may be in order — you’re among Canada’s elite in terms of retirement income! Consider the facts. The maximum monthly OAS benefit is $516.96 for 2010. The OAS clawback doesn’t begin to kick in until individual net income hits $66,733. For each dollar of income above this limit, OAS is reduced by 15 cents. You’d have to earn individual income of more than $108,090 before losing the entire benefit. A couple could have joint income of $200,000 and still keep a bit of OAS. (The upper and lower thresholds are inflation-indexed every year.) If the OAS clawback applies to you, there are strategies to help reduce the impact. These may include splitting eligible pension income with your spouse, using a Tax-Free Savings Account to generate non-taxable income, deferring income from a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) by basing mandatory withdrawals on the age of the younger spouse, or drawing on an annuity here a portion of each payment is tax-free return of capital. We can figure out how much OAS and other government benefits will contribute to your retirement income and, if applicable, suggest appropriate strategies to keep you out of the clawback zone. hristmas season is highlighted with decorations and blinking lights. It heightens the atmosphere of festivities. Decorating your home can become expensive if you are really going to go into details and extravagance. However, if budget is of concerns then you might consider alternatives that can save you money but create an equal effect. Here are the following tips that you can use in decorating your house without costing too much. Christmas lights come in different sparkling colors that improve the look and ambience of your home. There are several places where you can put them strategically to create a magical atmosphere. It can be placed around your windows and doors, hanged by the porch and put around the railings of the stairs. Those are not expensive but twinkling lights brings a great deal of excitement to the children. Christmas balls come in different sizes and colors. Filling some glass bowls and vases can make an attractive display. Putting them in several places can extend the look of Christmas in every corner of your house. Making your personalized Christmas balls is also a good idea. You just need some ordinary balls, glue and glitters, then you are off to a good start in creating a nice set of décor. Wrapping boxes is also a good idea. It comes with varying sizes and you just have to buy different wrappers and ribbons to create a different look on each. This is most probably the easiest on the pocket when it comes to adding decoration for your home. It does not cost too much and it does

While you are trying to do all these things, get your children to have a break in writing their individual letter to Santa. Tell them that Santa would be more willing to grant their wish, knowing that they help their mom preparing the house for Santa’s coming. This is one way of getting your children involve in decorating your house.

not take long to wrap boxes, so this is definitely a good idea. You can also surprise your children by putting on top of these boxes the letter Santa has sent for each one of them. During Christmas Eve, you can have a little game in finding their respective letters from Santa. Presence of Christmas cards around the house is also promoting the spirit of Christmas further. It gives warmth knowing that people are remembering us also, during this season. Place them by the Christmas trees and corner tables. Christmas candles are also part of the decors that should not be missed. Light it on early evenings and let the smell linger in the air. It is one way of getting the good feeling for Christmas.

Decorating for Christmas need not be expensive. It is already expensive as it is, with all the buying of presents for everyone. Taking inventory on what art materials you have in stock can be a good start. Think of objects that can be used before making a shopping list for your decoration project. You just have to let that creative juices flow in order to make interesting display for Christmas.

“Making your personalized Christmas balls is also a good idea. You just need some ordinary balls, glue and glitters, then you are off to a good start in creating a nice set of décor.”

Entertaining friends, family members and trying to find that perfect gift can make the Holiday seasons very stressful. Given that, let’s be proactive this season, making entertainment a delight. Stand back for a moment and take a look at your lovely home: • Does the gathering room provide sociable seating areas for your guest? • Is the gathering room spacious and functional for the occasion? First off, Guests should be greeted with a welcoming entry. Once the guests enter the gathering room, they should be able to navigate around the room freely. longest wall, but not against the wall, will generate a traffic lane and bring life into the room. Engaging conversation seating areas are imperative. Place the sofa and side chairs across from each other with a coffee table in the center. A side table should be positioned by each chair. The face to face seating arrangement allows relatives and friends the opportunity to engage in a “1-on-1” conversation and/or group discussion. One way to ensure proper lighting is to place a lamps through the room. Candlelight is also another means of lighting and serves as double duty - enhances the lighting and sets a festive mood for the room. Now, step back and take another look at your space. It is now guest- friendly. Your guests definitely won’t be in a rush to leave such an inviting home. Enjoy the HOLIDAYS!

$40,000 RING

An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store this past Friday evening with a beautiful, much younger gal at his side. He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend. The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring. The old man said, ‘No, I’d like to see something more special.’ At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over. ‘Here’s a stunning ring at only $40,000,’ the jeweler said. The lady’s eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man, seeing this said, ‘We’ll take it.’ The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, ‘By cheque. I know you need to make sure my cheque is good, so I’ll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I’ll pick the ring up Monday afternoon.’ On Monday morning, the jeweler angrily phoned the old man and said, ‘There’s no money in that account.’ ‘I know’, said the old man, ‘But let me tell you about my GREAT WEEKEND!’

Instead of being a time of unusual behavior, Christmas is perhaps the only time in the year when people can obey their natural impulses and express their true sentiments without feeling self-conscious and, perhaps, foolish. Christmas, in short, is about the only chance a man has to be himself. ~Francis C. Farley In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it ‘Christmas’ and went to church; the Jews called it ‘Hanukkah’ and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say ‘Merry Christmas!’ or ‘Happy Hanukkah!’ or (to the atheists) ‘Look out for the wall!’ ~Dave Barry www.thenewsyneighbor.com

GIVING An old holiday tradition is to take my small children to either a dollar store or a kid’s only store and give them a token amount of

money to buy presents for whomever they like. They usually come away with some real gems for everyone in the family. They are so proud to buy something for each other and parents and grandparents and are so excited about wrapping and hiding it until the big day. GINGERBREAD Making gingerbread cookies and gingerbread houses is a popular activity during the Christmas season. Gingerbread cookies

were used to decorate the tree in the early days. It is called gingerbread because of the “ginger spice that is used in making the cookies. Gingerbread houses were first made in Germany. The gingerbread house was popular after the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel became well-known.
