From the Publishers Hey hey! It’s finally May and OMGoodness I’m sure everyone is thrilled and all crossing are fingers that we will have No More Snow! Enough of winter already! With the anticipation of spring, we have added a new section to the magazine – make sure you check out “The Unique Boutique.” The idea came from the realization that there are so many people out there making really unique items and so many businesses and stores that carry products that they want to share with you, and we are always looking for new great ideas, so we thought we would have a section in which everyone could place their items so that YOU, the reader, can see what’s out there – what a great idea! Now, something else we have been thinking about is “Going Green.” With everything going on in the world, we feel we have a responsibility to think about the environment and we use a lot of trees to bring The Newsy Neighbour to you every month. Do our readers care about what is in the magazine more than the gloss we print it on? If we brought you the same great publication without the gloss and printed it on recycled paper would it matter to our readers? Please let us know what you think in our survey on page 36 You know, we love our magazine – our readers who support our advertisers and our advertisers who make it all possible – without them there would be no more Newsy Neighbour. “Let me suck your blood� are the unfathomable evil words spoken by Count Dracula (I’ve always wondered what his first name was), the centuries-old vampire, sorcerer and aristocratic Transylvanian nobleman, who claims to be a Szekely descended from Attila the Hun. My guess is he enjoyed all blood. What do I mean by “all blood�? Blood is categorized as one of four types: O, A, B, and AB and is either positive or negative. The river of life, blood is a fluid consisting of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets that are circulated by the heart through the arteries and veins, carrying oxygen and nutrients to the organs and carbon dioxide, ammonia and other waste materials away from the body tissues. Blood plays a vital role in our immune system and maintaining a constant body temperature and adults have between 4 and 5 quarts of it. Your white blood cells (leukocytes), (granulocytes), (macrophages) make up a very small part of blood’s volume – normally about 1% in healthy people. They are produced in our bone marrow and thymus gland from the same kind of stem cells that produce red blood cells. The white blood cells are the 1st responders for bacteria, viruses and fungi they surround and destroy alien cells. Red Blood cells (erythrocytes) are relatively large microscopic cells without nuclei and they make up from 40-50% of the total blood volume. The red blood cells are the ones that transport oxygen from the lungs to all of the living tissues of the body and carry away the carbon dioxide. The red cells are produced continuously in our bone marrow at an amazing rate of 2-3 million cells per second. Hemoglobin is the gas transporting protein molecule that makes up 95% of a red cell. Each red cell has about 270,000,000 iron-rich hemoglobin molecules. People who are anemic generally have a deficiency in red cells. Platelets (thrombocytes) are cell fragments without nuclei that work with blood clotting chemicals at the site of wounds. There are more than a dozen types of blood clotting factors and platelets that need to interact in the blood clotting process. Recent research has shown that platelets help fight infections by releasing proteins that kill invading bacteria and some other microorganisms. In addition, platelets stimulate the immune system. Individual platelets are about 1/3 the size of red cells. They have a lifespan of 9-10 days. Like the red and white blood cells, platelets are produced in bone marrow from stem cells. Plasma the relatively clear, yellow tinted water (92+%), sugar, fat, protein and salt solution which carries the red cells, white cells, platelets, and some other chemicals. blood to cells throughout the body, plasma brings nourishment to them and removes the waste products of metabolism. Plasma also contains over 4000 different chemicals, including blood clotting factors, sugars, lipids, vitamins, minerals, hormones, enzymes, antibodies, and proteins. We all know the most important day of the year is in May – MOTHERS DAY! Now, don’t get all upset, dads! FATHER'S DAY is the next most important day but that’s in June – we will do a page for you too! For your special mother on May 8th, why not make your mother a quick and easy mother’s day breakfast? The key to a fun, easy surprise is to keep it simple and pretty. This is a complete and easy guide to make a wonderful special breakfast for Mom or Grandma that isn't complicated, but will bring a happy smile, and maybe even a few tears of joy.

Hey Dad, this is something you could do together with your children, but allowing them to do most of the work! Take them to the store to buy the single rose or carnation, construction paper, doilies and pick out the sausages and waffles. By allowing the children to be a part of the whole process will give them a sense of accomplishment. Even if you are not able to do this on Mother’s Day, you could pick any weekend to have a special breakfast for MOM. Start with sausages - there are a lot of really good heat-and-serve sausages that can be warmed in the microwave or cooked on low heat in a skillet – just follow the directions on the package. Then buy Mom’s favourite flavour of waffles. Toast and serve with a generous amount of the following Berry Butter. You can also sprinkle lightly with confectioner’s sugar.
Berry Butter
Start with 1 stick of softened butter, cut into pieces, 1/3 Cup strawberry jam and ¼ Cup sliced fresh strawberries. Place butter, jam and strawberries in a medium bowl and mix together by hand with a wooden spoon. Transfer to a small bowl or container. Then: Buy a single rose or carnation and place in a pretty vase. Decorate Mom's breakfast tray with a doily or pretty napkin. Then place your homemade card on the tray. Create your own homemade card for Mom by using coloured paper, a white doily and markers. Glue a doily to one side of the coloured paper. Fold the paper in half with the doily side out. Use a marker to write your message or draw decorations on the card. You can also find a poem by visiting the local library. Ask the librarian to assist you in finding poetry that would be suitable for using on a Mother's Day or birthday card. The finishing touch to a perfect breakfast is the clean up! Be sure to wash the dishes, wipe down the kitchen and put everything away just as you found it. Also, be sure to give Mom your biggest hug and tell her that you love her. This in itself will be one of the best gifts she will receive.

GOLFING IS FUN AND SOMETHING THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN DO TOGETHER
If you're thinking that this is the summer for your son or daughter to learn the game of golf, it's time to get moving, because a million other parents have the same idea! No other sport or activity bridges the gap between age and ability as easily. On the golf course, every member of the family is on equal ground. You can be eight or eighty, male or female, a novice player or a low handicapper... and still enjoy playing the game together. The National Golf Foundation estimates that ninety percent of golfers learn from their family or friends, and if you play golf, you can understand what an advantage it is to start at an early age. Golf is probably the most difficult sport to master, and the later you begin the harder it is. Fortunately, children are not handicapped by all the thoughts adults have running through their heads during their backswing, and they are not trying in vain to hit the ball three hundred yards. They will have plenty of time for throwing tantrums and breaking clubs when they are grown up, so now is the best time for them to learn how to play, and more importantly, learn to enjoy the game. Here are some really good tips for you beginner golfers actually, for all golfers who have certain problems on the golf course – you know who you are! Haha! How to Stop “Looking Up”: Many beginning golfers have the “Look Up” problem. They are so anxious to see where the ball might go that they "look before they leap" and miss the ball completely. In some groups, if you do this you get charged with a stroke you have not made. Othe beginners will let you get away with it and give you a chance to really hit the ball. Why do beginners do this? Here are four important rules or techniques to keep in mind: - Make sure you rotate your hips properly when you make impact. - Keep your arms fully extended until you complete your shot. - Concentrate on a low follow-through, keeping your eye on the ball. - Make yourself wait until the ball has been hit and is far into the distance before you look to see where it has gone Are You a “Scooper”? Some beginning golfers sometimes have a "scooping" problem. Instead of hitting the ball cleanly, they "scoop" it up. They don't get the distance they want, and the ball may bound off completely away from the target. Essentially, this means the ball is hit high and behind, something that will ruin any shot and especially costly when you are chipping onto the green. Scoopers may not realize it at the time, but what they are doing is hitting up on the ball instead of down. In a strictly upward motion the club head passes the hands before impact, bottoming out the club before it reaches the ball. This problem can be corrected by keeping your hands ahead of the club head during address and impact. Keep good control of your wrist, avoiding the flip, hit the ball first and then follow-through. Use the Golf Practice Range. One good golf tip for beginners is to know that the golf practice range is the place to test out a golf tip or try improving your golf swing, not the golf course. Dedicate time to work on your faults; don't go there to smack golf balls around aimlessly. Golf is supposed to be an enjoyable game. We golf over and over again, because we love the game. So why do we beat ourselves up, just before we get off the first tee box? Have you ever heard yourself with a bunch of negative emotions before the golf round? “Another day out on the golf course and my back is killing me.” Why would you even consider golfing, if it were painful? Why did you even consider golfing with a bad back? I’ll tell you why All for the love of golf! “I have to get through this eighteen with the least amount of pain.” Why not play nine holes instead of eighteen? I’ll tell you why. All for the love of golf! “I am not too sure if the mental part of my game can take any more. It’s tough mentally when things just aren’t going right.” If you’re confused mentally, why even bother picking up a golf club? I’ll tell you why. Golfers Getting Ready to Swing? Self-Massage Can Help!
By Cynthia Barnesky It is time to pull out the shoes, gloves, balls and golf clubs. To help prevent injuries and to increase your swing, here are a few things every golfer should know, from pro to beginner or young to seasoned; it is important that your body, mind and soul are ready to give you all you need to play a great and pain-free game. Did know that self-massage is one of the key tools to help you become a better golfer? As a golfer, you already have the tool to perform self-massage: your golf club. This great tool can help you give your body a much-needed warm up and stretch before, during and even after the game. Here are just some quick tips: Take your golf club and start massaging your legs by holding both ends of your club between your hands and use your club like a stick, rubbing your calf muscles, hamstrings, thighs (IT band), then also use it on your ‘glutes’ and lower back muscles. The neck can also be massaged with your golf club. For your forearms, hold down the top of the club with one hand as you clench the club between your knees while sitting. Then, rub your free arm and forearm against the club. Just be careful not to press too hard! If it really hurts, stop! Playing your first round of golf can be intimidating. Will you know how to act on a golf course? Do you know the rules? Here’s a quick primer: 10 basic rules of etiquette, that can help make your first round of golf go easier. 1. Equipment - Taking the right equipment to the course involves both rules Ladies buy and etiquette. The rules place a limit of 14 clubs in each golfer’s bag. Golf shoes are usually not required, and golf gloves are always up to the golfer, but both are good things to have and use. 4. Teeing Off - On the teeing ground, you must place your ball between the tee markers, either even with them or up to two club lengths behind them. Never in front of them. 5. Honors, Away and Ready Play - The player who has “honors” plays first from the teeing ground. The exception is when all members of the group have agreed to play “ready golf,” meaning hit-when-ready. 6. Play It as it Lies - One of the most fundamental principles of golf - is “play it as it lies.” What that means is pretty simple - don’t move or touch the ball! Where it comes to rest, whatever state it is in, you most likely have to play it as is. Don’t move the ball, don’t touch it, don’t pick it up unless you are certain that you are allowed to do so under the Rules. 7. Out of Bounds & Lost Balls – Out of bounds should be clearly marked around the golf course, usually through the use of white stakes or white lines. The penalty for OB is stroke-plus-distance; that is, add one stroke to your score, then go back to where you hit the shot from and hit it again. Of course, that takes time. At busy golf courses you won’t have that time because there is likely to be a group behind yours waiting to play. So when you think you’ve hit a ball out of bounds, you’ll need to play a second ball (called a “provisional ball”) off the tee so you won’t have to retrace your steps if the first ball really is OB. Make sure to announce to your playing partners that you are hitting a provisional, then re-tee after everyone else has hit and play your provisional tee ball. If you find your first ball and it is actually in bounds, then you play the first ball. If you can’t find your first ball, or find it out of bounds, then play your provisional ball (in which case your provisional ball off the tee counts as your third stroke, so your next shot will be your fourth). The same applies to lost balls. If your shot goes deep into the woods, the penalty for a lost ball is stroke-plus-distance, so hit a provisional. 8. Keep Up the Pace - Slow play has always been an issue on golf courses, and it’s even more important as a beginner to be aware of your pace of play. You don’t want to keep golfers behind you waiting, just as you probably don’t want to be kept waiting yourself by slow groups ahead. Always be prepared to play when it is your turn to hit. If your group is slower than the group immediately behind yours - if your group is holding up another group - it’s good etiquette to allow the faster group to play through. Not all groups will want to do this, but many will, and all that do will be very grateful for your show of etiquette. 9. Water Hazards – Water hazards should be clearly marked on golf courses. Yellow stakes or lines indicate a water hazard. You can try to play a ball that is in the water, but that’s generally a bad idea. Instead, take a 1-stroke penalty and drop a ball at any point behind the spot where your original ball crossed into the water hazard, but on the same line of play. 10. Course Care and Safety – Golf courses are there to be enjoyed by all golfers, so part of your responsibility is taking care of the course while you are on it. If you are using a golf cart, always observe the posted cart rules. Even better, a good idea is to keep the cart on the cart paths at all times (carts damage the grass). Always repair your ballmarks (also called pitch marks) on the green. Always repair your divots in the fairway. Always rake sand bunkers after you’ve hit your shot to smooth out the sand so that ensuing golfers don’t have to play out of your footprints. And always be aware of other golfers on the course. Don’t play your shot until the group ahead is out of range.

Jocktalk - Golf Anyone? I have a confession to make! I am a golfaholic. Zinger, my Jack Russell Terrier is named after former PGA player Paul Azinger. If my wife didn’t shut me down 13 years ago, my son’s middle name would have been “Tee”. I own a pair of plus fours in memory of one of my favourite players Payne Stewart and if you see me on the links during the season you will likely see me wearing my Greg Norman shark straw hat. Yes, I am a golfaholic and that’s why I love this time of year! To me the first signs of spring are the PGA of Alberta golf show that took place at the end of March and the first major of the season on television “the Masters”. I love the Masters. I have never had the pleasure to go to Augusta but that experience is certainly high on my bucket list. I have been very fortunate to play some of the most historic golf courses in the world. Courses like St. Andrews in Scotland and Lahinch in Ireland but I must say we are very spoiled here in Southern Alberta as we really do have some of best courses in this country. This month I present my top ten list of my favourite golf courses in Calgary and surrounding area. 10. Inglewood - Hard to believe that this par 71 inner city track dates back to 1930’s. If I master the tough opening hole, I always seem to score well here. 9. Carstairs - Considering this course used to be a sheep pasture with 9 holes and sand greens, Carstairs has grown in to a 18 hole championship layout. 8. Maple Ridge - My favourite of the city courses in Calgary (I wanted one city course in my top 10). Nice layout in the SE off Fish Creek and it doesn’t cost you a bundle to play. 7. Valley Ridge - Some long time Calgarians may remember Valley Ridge as Happy Valley. Ski Hill and all! Over the past 15 years, Valley Ridge has transformed into a 7,026-yard, championship course with two distinct nines. 6. Stratmore - This links style course is well worth the 25 minute drive east on the Trans-Canada highway. Love the 5th hole with the island green. 5. Glencoe (Forest) - Yes this is a private track and you may need an invite from a member but you will not be disappointed. Head pro Judy Forschner is one of the nicest people in the business. 4. Calgary Country Club - A 100 year old traditional and very prestigious golf club. Yes the membership may be elite and pompous but if you ever get an invite to play don’t turn it down. It’s a great golf experience. 3. Kananaskis Country Golf Course - The best mountain golf experience in the Rockies in my opinion. Best bang for your buck too if you are an Alberta resident. 2. Water Valley Golf and Country Club - I didn’t even know this hidden jewel existed until a few years ago when my good friend Dennis Bradley became the head professional. It’s a family owned course with a great country feel and a beautiful backdrop. It’s well worth the 50 minute drive out of Calgary. 1. Heritage Pointe - Why go play in Scotland or Arizona when you can get a similar experience right here in Calgary? Score Magazine rated Heritage Pointe as the 18th best course in Canada for a reason. This course is always in meticulous shape and has the best practice facility in the area.

I am a LEMON I am the most beautiful, bright, little piece of sunshine on the planet. My name is Lucy and I am a Lemon. My ancestors came from China or India but that was over 2,500 years ago and there is great debate on which country we truly originated from – no one can remember the true story. I do know the Arabs brought us to Spain and Africa in the 11th century and the Crusaders, who found us in Palestine, brought us to other countries all across Europe. Like many other fruits and vegetables, Christopher Columbus brought us to the New World in 1493 and we have been growing in Florida and all over the United States ever since. We are so high in vitamin C, the miners and developers during the California Gold Rush in the mid-18th century ate us to protect themselves against scurvy. We were so important, people would pay $1.00 a piece for us – like buying gold, and that was back in 1849. We are so jam-packed with vitamin C, which is the most important antioxidant in nature. A mere tablespoon of my juice has 7 mg of vitamin C and a half-cup of my juice meets 100% of the RDA for the day. We also contain a unique flavonoid compound that fights off free radicals, which makes us an antioxidant and a cancer preventer. The ‘old wives’ would say having a cup of hot water with a squeeze of lemon juice would release toxins from your liver. LEMON BARS These are so easy to make and even easier to eat – make two batches or you may not get one. 1 ½ Cups flour 2/3 Cup confectioners sugar ¾ Cup butter, softened 3 Eggs 1 ½ Cups white sugar ¼ Cup fresh lemon juice 1/3 Cup confectioners sugar for decoration Preheat oven to 375 degrees then grease a 9x13” baking pan. Combine the flour, 2/3-cup conf. sugar and butter. Pat dough into prepared pan. Bake for 20 minutes until slightly brown. While the crust is baking, whisk the eggs, white sugar, flour and lemon juice until frothy. Pour this over the hot crust and return to the oven for 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack and then dust with conf. sugar. Cut into squares and share with your most favourite people. LIMONCELLO Now, I would never recommend drinking too much of my to-die-for liqueur, but what a wonderful little treat to sip on while spending time reading your favourite book. This is as easy as pie to make, too! Combine ½ Cup lemon rind strips with 4 cups vodka, cover and let stand for two weeks – strain and combine with simple syrup made from 3 cups water and 1 ½ cups sugar. Ta-daa! It’s done – it’s that simple.

LEMON
¾ Cups fresh lemon juice 1 Tbsp. grated lemon zest ¾ Cup sugar 3 Eggs ½ Cup butter, cubed
DELIGHT SALMON BALLS WITH LEMON MUSTARD SAUCE 1 (7 3/4 oz.) can salmon Juice of 1/2 fresh lemon 1/2 c. crushed cracker crumbs 2 tbsp. chopped green onions 1 egg, slightly beaten 1/4 tsp. pepper 3 tbsp. salad oil Spaghetti Lemon wedges & parsley for garnish
In a saucepan, combine lemon juice, lemon zest, sugar, eggs and butter. Cook and constantly stir over medium-low heat until thick and first bubble appears on surface, Drain and flake salmon, reserving about 6 minutes. liquid for sauce. Garnish with lemon 1 1/2 tsp. fresh dill 1/4 tsp. each onion powder and garlic wedges and parsley. powder LEMON MUSTARD SAUCE 2 lemons, halved 1/4 tsp. crushed peppercorns or black Water pepper 1 lb. white fish of your choice - about 1 tbsp. butter 1 tbsp. flour 1/2-inch thick 1/4 tsp. salt Heat butter and flour in sauceIn a Generous dash pepper blender or food processor, process 1/4 c. mayonnaise first 6 ingredients to make crumbs. Grated peel of 1/2 fresh lemon Line a shallow baking sheet with foil 1/2 tsp. prepared mustard and place fish. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle generously with Add water to reserved salmon the prepared crumb mixture. Slice liquid to equal 3/4 cup. Remove preheated 350°F oven until the fish from heat; blend in mayonnaise, flakes easily with a fork, about 15-20 lemon peel and mustard. Makes minutes depending upon thickness about 1 cup. of fillets.

This month’s luscious joys recipes are all about breakfast – the most important meal of the day. Studies have shown a healthy breakfast is important to lessen chronic disease, increased longevity and better health. Starting your day with a good breakfast boosts your energy, increases your attention span, and heightens your sense of well-being. You’ll be in better control of your emotions. A good breakfast is one that provides at least one third of the day’s calories and you don’t need to have the same old boring breakfast everyday.
Classic Waffles
2 Cups all-purpose flour 2 Eggs 1 tsp. salt 1 ½ Cups warm milk 4 tsp. baking powder 1/3 Cup butter, melted 2 Tbsp. white sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract In a large bowl, mix together flour, salt, baking soda and sugar – set aside. Preheat waffle iron. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs. Stir in the milk and vanilla. Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture and beat until blended. Ladle onto the preheated waffle iron and cook until golden and crisp. Yummy! Submitted by: Megan

8 Eggs 1 Cup diced cooked ham 1 Cup milk 1 Cup shredded Cheddar cheese 2 Cups shredded hash brown potatoes salt and pepper to taste 2 Cups shredded hash brown potatoes salt and pepper to taste Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease an 8x8 inch glass baking dish. Beat eggs in a large bowl and stir in the milk, potatoes, ham and cheese. Season to taste and pour into prepared pan. 2 Eggs 1 Cup milk 2/3 Cup all-purpose flour 1 pinch salt 1 ½ tsp. vegetable oil In a blender combine eggs, milk, flour, salt and oil. Process until smooth. Cover and refrigerate 1 hour. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and brush with oil. Pour ¼ Cup of crepe batter into pan, tilting to completely coat the surface of the pan. Cook 2 to 5 minutes, turning once, until golden. Repeat with remaining batter. Use your imagination and make the perfect crepe to create your very own taste sensation.
LEFTOVER Pancake Breakfast Sandwich
Cooking spray 2 leftover pancakes 1 egg 1 slice Cheddar cheese 1 slice ham 2 Tbsp. maple syrup Heat frying pan over medium heat and lightly spray with cooking spray. Crack the egg into the pan and beat the yolk. Cook the egg to desired firmness. Warm the sliced ham in the pan while assembling sandwich. Toast pancakes in toaster and place one pancake on plate. Place egg on top of pancake. Pour 1 Tbsp. of maple syrup over egg, place the cheese and ham on top. Place the second toasted pancake over all and another Tbsp. of maple syrup over the top of the sandwich. Three brothers in Ireland used to frequent a local pub. Then one moved to America and another to Australia. The lone brother left still went to the pub, but now he ordered three beers, taking a sip from each in turn. The patrons watched him go through this ritual for some time before one of them asked why. “One’s for my brother in America, one for my brother in Australia and one for me,” he replied. Understanding the Mother/Daughter Relationship
“Your hair really looked better short!” “Those pants don’t really flatter your figure.” Harmless comments made by a mother to her daughter or from a daughter to her mother. They were said with love from a caring heart but are heard as criticism and bring on an unexpected and harsh response. As we approach Mother’s Day, it is only fitting that we turn our hearts and minds to thinking about the institution of motherhood. Being a mother can be “the most wonderful, terrifying, fulfilling and confusing role that life has to offer,” providing one of life’s greatest joys, a pivotal moment in a Mother/Daughter workshops woman’s life where she knows something greater than herScrapbooking & Horses Workshop self. Many mother/daughter relationships are marred with turmoil that, in turn, produces acting out behaviours and the journey spirals downhill from there. Such behaviours are simply manifestations of these complex interactions. What it all comes down to is communication. Studies show that the number one communication problem in the mother/ daughter relationship is allowing anger and frustration to get in the way of understanding and respecting each other. Innocent comments meant to be caring are interpreted as critical and leave mothers wondering what they said wrong and daughters fuming. What can we do? First, accept that there is a problem and be willing to work together in discovery. One area to look at is changing conversational patterns and communications skills. It does not have to be adversarial and can actually be a lot of fun to experience together in the right setting. Interacting with our equestrian partners provides just such a shared learning environment. Horse’s behaviour is innate and instinctive and their survival is dependent on effectively communicating with their herd. They are powerful mirrors that verbally and non-verbally reflect our communication styles and our ability to effectively convey messages with respect and unconditional love. Being intuitive horses immediately show us when we are fooling ourselves and where we might want to make changes to the way we communicate with each other. Just like people, they seek understanding and act out when not getting the respect and understanding they need to feel safe. It is in these interactions that mother/daughter pairs can gain insight into their own communication styles and find strength and hope for an improved relationship. The Hypnotist
It was entertainment night at the Senior Center. Claude the hypnotist exclaimed, “I’m here to put you into a trance. I intend to hypnotize each and every member of the audience.” The excitement was almost electric as Claude withdrew a beautiful, antique pocket watch from his coat. “I want you each to keep your eye on this antique watch. It’s a very special watch. It’s been in my family for six generations.” He began to swing the watch gently back and forth, quietly chanting, “Watch the watch, watch the watch, watch the watch...” The crowd became mesmerized as the watch swayed back and forth, light gleaming off its polished surface. Hundreds of pairs eyes followed the swaying watch. Then, suddenly, the watch slipped from the hypnotist’s fingers and fell to the floor, breaking into a hundred pieces. “CRAP!” exclaimed the hypnotist. It took three days to clean up the Senior Center. Claude was never invited back to entertain.

We have been reading a lot of information about the paper we use to print the magazine. For every month when we print 17,200 issues it equates to: • 12 fully grown trees • 8,554 gallons of water • 1,082 pounds of solid waste • 2,811 pounds of greenhouse gases
These numbers were determined using the eco-calculator of the Cascades Fine Paper Group. According to the Worldwatch Institute, over 40 percent of the world’s industrial wood harvest is used for the manufacture of paper. This has resulted in the decimation of our old growth forest, which continue to be clear-cut to make paper. We honor paper and printing companies as well as retailers that are committed to introducing environmentally friendly paper at competitive prices to the magazine industry, while at the same time diverting waste from the landfills and addressing pollution issues. We know all our loyal readers do not throw The Newsy Neighbour in the garbage and share the magazine with friends and family, but for the few of you who slip and absent mindedly – by accident – throw it into the garbage – remember where the magazine came from – a big beautiful tree. MY FAVOURITE - FABULOUS - FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF I love herbs and spices and I have a whole cupboard full of them. I spice up everything I cook, and I’m constantly experimenting with new flavours. Recently, I have started using curries to flavour my dishes. Many herbs and spices have beneficial health properties and turmeric is one of them. It has been used for over 2,500 years in India for its powerful healing properties. It was frequently used in folklore medicine to treat conditions such as skin diseases, digestive issues, rheumatic pains, coughs, and even to increase breast milk production. However, here in Canada, it is not the first herb people reach for to spice up their everyday cooking. The active constituent of turmeric is known as curcumin, which is shown to have a wide range of therapeutic actions. First, it has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect, which has proven useful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. In several studies, curcumin’s antiinflammatory effects are shown to be comparable to the potent drugs hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone, as well as over-the-counter anti-inflammatory agents such as Motrin. Unlike the drugs, which are associated with toxic side effects, turmeric is generally a safe herb without any toxicity when used in the recommended amounts. Curcumin is also known for its antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. Research has shown that curcumin can reduce the invasion and subsequent metastasis of cancer cells by inhibiting transcription factor NF-kB (nuclear factor -light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells), which is known to play a role in angiogenesis (the forming of new blood vessels in order for a cancerous tumour to grow and metastasize). The relationship between antioxidants and cancer prevention has been extensively studied over the past decades. Curcumin’s role in cancer prevention is largely due to its antioxidant actions, which enable www.thenewsyneighbor.com
it to protect cells from free radical damage. Another benefit of turmeric is that it can help prevent oxidation of cholesterol in the body, which means it can protect against cardiovascular disease. The health benefits of turmeric are numerous. Even though most studies used standardized extracts of curcumin, turmeric as a spice is still very beneficial, and will add an exotic touch to your meals. Turmeric does not have to be used only in curries. Try adding it to some sautéed vegetables such as cauliflower, or mixing it into salad dressings to create a golden yellow hue. Keep in mind that turmeric is better absorbed when mixed with a little black pepper. Turmeric tea has been used for hundreds of years and is very easy to make. Just bring 4 cups of water to a boil, reduce heat, add a teaspoon of ground turmeric, and let simmer for about 10 minutes. Then strain mixture into a mug, add some honey and lemon, and enjoy Contraindications: Turmeric should not be used by people with gallstones or bile obstruction. During this time the unit will be inspected every 6 months to ensure proper operation. • A warning system alerts the customer if anything needs attention. • Systems are available for single unit, multiple unit, and for entire communities. • Over 2500 household size units and over 500 large units have been installed worldwide.

JUST BECAUSE THE SUN IS SHINING Frozen Yogurt is full of protein, calcium, and healthful lactobacillus bacteria. This is a great way to replace ice cream; each serving of frozen yogurt contains only half the calories present in an equal portion of ice cream. You also avoid the stabilizers, emulsifiers, preservatives and “imitation” ingredients contained in the commercial brands. Many of the frozen yogurt products on the market contain “dead” rather than viable bacteria, thus reducing the health benefits of the dessert. And because regulations for frozen yogurt have not been standardized, even the amount of yogurt present in commercial brands varies a lot. When you make your own frozen yogurt you’ll be able to prepare any flavour your little heart desires – use your imagination and you don’t need an ice-cream machine – just your lonely, rarely used blender. Here are a couple just to get you started and then go crazy with your own ideas. It’s very healthy!
OMGoodness FROZEN BLUEBERRY YOGURT
2 ½ Cups fresh or frozen blueberries, thawed 2 ½ Cups plain yogurt 1 Cup – Half and Half 1 Cup sugar Mash blueberries and combine with remaining ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes then transfer to an airtight container and put in freezer to harden up.
OMDoubleGoodness FROZEN STRAWBERRY YOGURT
Ice 1 Cup water 4 Cups plain yogurt 1 Cup Strawberry Syrup 2 Cups frozen strawberries Blender Put 1 cup of water, 2 cups of plain yogurt and 1 cup of frozen strawberries into your blender. Blend thoroughly on the highest setting. You may need to stop, unplug the blender and stir the ingredients to free the blades occasionally if the batch freezes up. Add 2 cups plain yogurt, 1 cup frozen strawberries and 1 cup of strawberry syrup to the blender. Blend thoroughly on the highest setting. Again, stop, unplug the blender and stir the ingredients to free the blades if the batch freezes up. Add more water to thin out the mix. When you have achieved a good blend, slowly add a few pieces of ice at a time until the blender is full and you have reached the desired consistency. Serve your frozen yogurt straight from the blender, or put it into an airtight container and store it in the freezer.

It has definitely been a long, cold winter, and now is the time when we are all slowly starting to come out of that winter hibernation mode and get ready for Spring and Summer time. In these modern days, the way beauty is perceived, has become so vast, so versatile, so unique. In just the past twenty years, our makeup fashion has changed drastically, from the pale matte faces with darker lips, to the bronzed skin, dewy look with neutral colored lips. My point here is that through the years, no matter what styles and looks that do come and go, one thing always remains the same ; having that flawless looking face. The number one thing to remember, is that under all great looking skin, lies nutrients, hydration, and a healthy balance of oils. You can paint on concealer and foundation as thick as you want, but if your skin isn’t healthy and moisturized, your makeup application will work against you, leaving you looking tired, dry, and aged. Proper skin health begins with the simplest, most obvious; hydration. Up to 70% of the human body is made up of water, so ensure you get your eight (8 oz.) glasses of water a day!. Also, taking a good multivitamin containing biotin, and a supplemental omega 3-6-9 helps to support healthy skin, hair, and nails. The first thing you want to do, is to use a gentle exfoliator, to slough off dead, dry skin on your face. Next, apply a light, non-oily moisturizer with an SPF. Just because the sun’s not out, doesn’t mean those dam-
aging UV rays aren’t either. Once the moisturizer is absorbed, apply a small amount of a silicone based foundation primer. This will help you to apply your foundation a lot more smoothly, and more even. It also helps your makeup stay put! (MAC Cosmetics and Smashbox both make fantastic primers) Next, cover any blemsihes or dark circles with a thick concealer in the same tone as your skin. Apply it with a light, dabbing motion using your ring finger, or a concelaer brush. Then , you’ll want to find a good, oil-free, liquid foundation that exact matches your skin tone. Dot the foundation along your forehead, cheekbones, chin, and bridge of your nose. You can apply and blend it in one of the two ways; by using a foundation brush, or by taking a dampened makeup sponge and smoothing the foundation over all areas of your face. Be sure to blend well into the jaw and neckline! Using a large, rounded, fluff brush, apply a translucent powder all over, to set the foundation. Once this is all complete, finish with a very light dusting of a bronzer (one with gold flecks or shimmer in it helps to illuminate your skin and give it that glowing, radiant look). Lastly, using a blush brush, or a medium, angled contour brush, apply a small amount of blush, in a warm, coral tone, as this is the most flattering on all skin tones. When you apply it, imagine a diagonal line from just under the apple of your cheek, extending up your cheekbone, to align no higher than your eye. Make sure it’s subtle, and well blended! There you have it!! Flawless and beautiful!

"Welcome To My Tragic End." —J.R. You know that strange urge to slow down and look that grips you when driving past the scene of an accident? That macabre pull to see what’s happened? Well, I had that experience with the latest book up for review: Runaway Devil: How Forbidden Love Drove a 12-Year-Old to Murder Her Family. Seeing the book, it rekindled my curiosity regarding the horrific stories I’d heard after the events of that 2006 spring in Medicine Hat. While I can usually fight off the temptation to slow down and ‘rubberneck’ at an accident site, I was intrigued by the book and thought I might be able to make more sense of the incident than I had from the news and television coverage that immediately followed it. Robert Remington and Sherri Zickefoose, the authors, have done a great deal of work and diligent research putting together a solid account of this tragic occurrence. They combined previously released information with unpublished details and produced a book that examines the history and circumstances of the major individuals involved. From J.R.—the book’s shorthand for the twelve-year-old subject of the novel—and Jeremy Steinke, her partner in crime, and their marginalized or cast-off peers, to the family who was brutally and coldly murdered and the central police figures who investigated the case. What’s presented is a detailed and thorough observation of all those who played a part, whatever their role. To the reader, it appears that a series of unfortunate and seemingly disconnected events conspired and, ultimately, led to this disastrous act. The writers traced the path of J.R.’s parents as they struggled to build successful, middle class careers from very humble and even troubled beginnings, moving from Ontario, to Okotoks and finally settling in Medicine Hat. We are introduced to the personalities of Marc and Debra and their hopes of making a better life for themselves and their children. Accounts are also provided of the lives of J.R. and her eight-year-old brother, Jacob, which help to round out the beginning, giving us a snapshot of what, by all appearances, should have been two happy children living in a stable and well-adjusted family. The remainder of the book, in addition to a disturbing version of the events that transpired on and immediately after the night of April 23, 2006, deals largely with the deteriorating relationship between J.R. and her parents or details about the friends and acquaintances who crossed paths with J.R. and Jeremy at various points and for various periods. These range from transient, mall-going ‘goths’ to estranged school friends. The book ends with a discussion of J.R.’s incarceration and pending release. Overall, the book is a progression of darkening and often bizarre scenes, each of which lends another piece to the overall puzzle that this deplorable event represents. Slowly and inescapably, the story unfolded, much to my discomfort and unease. Knowing the outcome in advance was no help in this instance. Through no fault of the writers’, I formed more questions than answers in reading Runaway Devil. It is a well written and solidly documented piece of writing. But, I can’t say I’m pleased to have thumbed through its pages and, needless to say, I’ll think twice before giving in to my morbid curiosity the next time—whether on the highway or the bookstore. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

I’m sure you all agree that May could not come soon enough this year. I cannot remember the last time we had so much snow in April – what on earth is going on?! But, we are in the weather pattern of La Nina, and that may not change for a few years, so next winter so expect the same kind of weather. Thank goodness for May! It is such a happy month! The birds are building their nests and the robin families have returned. People are thinking about gardening, camping and those long hot days of summer. If you were born between April 20th and May 20th you are a Taurus and between May 21st and June 20th you are a Gemini. May’s birthstone is the emerald (my very favourite stone), which means love and success and the Lily of the Valley is the May flower. The most important day of the year is in May – Mother’s Day, of course, which is celebrated the second Sunday of the month.
