Some Things Just Can’t Be Learned from a Math Book It’s September, which means everybody’s gearing up for the new school year: buying binders and supplies, seeing old friends again for the first time in months, and getting ready for another year of learning, growth, and fun. Regardless of how much your kids might have spent these last few weeks moaning and groaning about the end of summer and the prospect of another year of learning, the start of September is always an exciting time. The beginning of the new school year means so much more than just the start of a new semester, or the commencement of a new grade – it represents the start of a new chapter in life, all the potential of the months ahead, and the chance to learn some very important

lessons that you won’t find in any sort of trigonometry class. Be Flexible… One of the first things any student learns – whether she’s starting pre-school or grad school – is that in order to succeed, she’s going to need to be able to go with the flow. Whether it means picking a different colour of fingerpaint because all the green’s gone, being open to the notion of following a group member’s lead on a team project, or staying home to take catch up on some studying even though Jenna Stewart is throwing the craziest party and everybody is going to be there and it’s going to be INSANE – flexibility is key to finding success in the new school year. Teachers aren’t going to check in to make sure everyone’s free to do some homework each and every night, and there are going to be plenty of social situations that require the ability to roll with the punches. It’s up to each individual student to learn how best to accept that sometimes, plans don’t always go the way they’re supposed to, and things don’t work out exactly the way we’d like, but you know what? At the end of the day, maybe that’s not so bad. …But Take a Stand When It Matters… Usually, being flexible and agreeable is the way to be, but sometimes in life, there comes a point where the right thing to do isn’t to acquiesce and go along with things, but to stand up for what’s important and what’s right. Now, I don’t want to get in hot water here for encouraging anyone to get into trouble or earn themselves detention, but if you take a moment to think back to the time you spent on schoolyards and campuses, I’m sure you can recall some pivotal moments where you took a stand – even though it might have meant breaking the rules – that you still feel good about today. Maybe it was the day you finally stood up to that bully, or the time you jumped into the middle of that fight to break it up, or even just that one afternoon that you stepped in to defend the kid that everyone was always picking on. Whatever your unique story might be, these are the moments that really leave a mark and end up truly defining who we are as people – both to ourselves, and to those around us. …And Above All Else, Always Be Honest… We learn from a very young age that “honesty is always the best policy,” and this seems like a pretty easy lesson to follow. Just tell the truth – can’t be too tough, right? On paper, this one sounds easy, but in reality, it’s one of the toughest lessons a person can learn, and one that still gives plenty of adults a run for their money.

Hopefully, they can take that knowledge and share it with all of us, too, because no matter how old you are – whether you’re going back to school this September or not – we could all stand to be reminded that no matter what someone looks like or happens to believe in, they’re a person, no different from you or I, and are deserving of the same sort of respect and kindness that you’d expect to receive yourself

LOST TREASURES TIPS FROM THE PAST • Add one grated raw potato with each pound of ground beef for luscious, juicy hamburgers. • To keep lettuce fresh longer, keep in paper bags. • For a new bacon treat: dip bacon slices in beaten egg, then in crushed cracker crumbs, and then broil. • Boil an onion in the water with your potatoes for onion flavoured mashed potatoes. • Cook carrots with potatoes and then mash together. This makes the potatoes a slight orange in colour and produces an entirely new flavour. • Before opening a package of bacon, roll it. This helps separate the slices for easy removal of individual slices. • Thaw fish in milk for a fresher flavour. • You can correct greasy gravy by adding a little baking soda to it. • To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes. • The best way to store fresh celery is to wrap it in aluminum foil and put it in the refrigerator – it will keep for weeks. • Fresh egg shells are rough and chalky; old eggs are smooth and shiny. • No “curly” bacon for breakfast when you dip it into cold water before frying. • When mincing garlic, sprinkle on a little salt so the pieces won’t stick to your knife or cutting board. • To keep cauliflower white while cooking, add a little milk to the water. • Microwave a lemon for 15 seconds and double the juice you get before squeezing. • Noodles, spaghetti and other starches won’t boil over if you rub the inside of the pot with vegetable oil.

I have a new best friend. I call him, “Fence.” It is a large wooden wall in my back yard and sometimes it snarls and Only barks at me. I could run along my BFF all day. When I’m $12 + gst, s/h inside, I dream of Fence. When I’m outside, I lay on the green grass staring at Fence. Fence and I are inseparable. One day, my mom introduced me to these two weird dogs who live next door to me. They seemed mildly familiar, but I did not want to meet them. I am far too old for making new dog friends. Mom was laughing with the dogs’ owner, saying things like, “they only want to meet each other with the Fence between them.” I don’t understand what they were saying. But I heard them mention my best friend and I instantly wanted to run to the backyard to see him. Poor Fence, I wonder what you are up to right now! Sometimes my annoying little sister Stella likes to sniff Fence. I don’t let her. I snarl at her and put my butt in her face to move her along. He’s MY best friend. Not yours. It was raining last night and when I came outside, Fence was wet. I didn’t let that deter me from snuggling with him though. This diary post is too long. I have to go outside and check on Fence. ‘Til next month! Bauer

ASK THE VET These days, most of us enjoy communicating with one another on the internet. Just a few days ago, my internet provider went on a walkabout and for nearly 3 days I was without web access or email. A few times, I wondered aloud: "How did the world survive without access to on-demand information and communications? How did we ask and answer questions? How did we share knowledge?” Fortunately, we as veterinarians and you as pet owners don’t often have to do without some form of connectivity. That is wonderful, but it's not without a downside. A search of Google for “Pet Health” turned up nearly 350 million hits in just 2.5 seconds. Now I don’t want to propose that all of these mentions should be vetted for relevance or accuracy, but you should always remember that relatively few of them are. There is a vast amount of information on all things pets. Much of which has been developed by organizations that are experts in every area of veterinary medicine imaginable or are manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and products that have been thoroughly evaluated and approved or are even veterinary teaching hospitals and veterinarians who have demonstrated and proven expertise in areas of medicine. Unfortunately, many online sources have not been vetted at all. Remember, the internet gives people a blank page to bring you their perspective, often with little more than opinion to support what they say. So how do you pick a resource for information? Where can you go to be sure you come away with accurate and useful information? How do you decide what sites to follow and listen to? First, find a veterinarian you can trust and communicate with. Veterinarians know you go to the web. They go to the web, too! But NEVER let the internet be a substitute for a visit to the veterinarian. They are your trusted advisors and they are committed to providing the

best care and advice they can. So, before you do anything else, ask your veterinarian for help. We know that 40% of people who go to the veterinarian have gone online before even calling. Fortunately, many pet owners have used the web as a source of information but not as a substitute for veterinary care; although, 25% of them go back online to make sure what they were told makes sense. Second, and related to the first point, remember that the web can be a great complement (but never a substitute) for veterinary care because it can help you to gather information, prioritize concerns and verify your understanding. I wish more pet owners would do this. Being armed with knowledge and accurate information makes for better experiences, better outcomes, and most importantly: higher levels of pet owner satisfaction. So always remember much of the web and most of its content has not been

well vetted and confirmed. Anyone can express their ideas on the web. There is great information but there is also an ocean of inaccuracy and concern. When in doubt, visit websites developed by professional associations and organizations. As a rule, they have been well founded, and are reviewed and amended regularly so you can be confident that the information you get is accurate. If you read something on a site, especially a site whose authors are not skilled in animal medicine, please look further. Check what was said by going to a reputable site. When you have a concern about your pet’s health or recognize an abnormality in their behavior, always seek the advice of your veterinarian. Only a veterinarian is trained to evaluate your observations, conduct a thorough physical examination, interpret diagnostic tests and advocate for the best recommendations. So, while consulting the internet is fine, be sure that your veterinarian is always involved and consulted. He or she is the ultimate expert on your pet’s health. If you have any questions or concerns, you should always visit or call your veterinarian – they are your best resource to ensure the health and well-being of your pets. Goodbye, Summer – and Good Riddance!

Make Way for the Best Season of the Year: Winter Can you feel that – there, in the air? That delightfully brisk breeze, the autumnal scent on the wind? The days are getting shorter, the leaves are starting to turn, and the combines are out, crawling across acres of farmland, busily getting the harvest ready for another year. Summer is on the wane, its warm, sunny days making way for the wintery months ahead. And do you know what? I couldn’t be happier to see it go. So long, summer – don’t let the door hit you on the way out! When it comes right down to it, winter is where it’s at. Now, before I get an angry mob showing up at my door, allow me to explain myself! Don’t get me wrong, I like summer just fine – and realistically, if you were to approach me in early-to-mid-March of any Albertan winter and ask how I was feeling about the weather, I’d tell you that I couldn’t wait for the sun and warmth, just the same way any sane Canadian would. If you take a step back, though, and look at the entire year and all of its seasons objectively, I bet there’d be more people who find themselves on the (correct) wintery side of things than the warm, summery side than you might expect – especially if we’re talking about the summer of 2018, specifically. This summer has been a tough one to get through, for a lot of

different reasons. Chief among them has been the weather. It’s been a hot one this year – and when I say hot, I mean HAWT, in all-capital letters, with an A and a W thrown in there for good measure. I know there are plenty of places around the globe that experience temperatures far greater than anything we’ve seen over these past few months, but for southern Alberta? It’s been a scorcher. We were breaking daily heat records left, right, and center, and there were a few days that we hit temperatures close to as hot as it’s EVER been here in our neck of the woods. Now, I know plenty of people out there will be saying “It’s summer – it’s supposed to be hot! We get so few warm days each year, stop complaining and get out there and enjoy them!” Well, that’s precisely my beef with Summer 2018. When the mercury rises past the 30-degree mark, it starts to get pretty tough to be outside and enjoy anything at all. I don’t know about you, but all I can think of at that point is finding some A/C and gulping down a big glass of cool water before I spontaneously combust from the heat. And that’s not even taking into consideration all the smoke. This summer has been an absolute nightmare with regards to wildfires – both here in Canada, and across the globe. At the time of writing, 2018 is officially on record as being the second-worst year in history for forest fires in BC – behind only 2017. Nearly 10,000 square km of land has been torched in our neighbouring province to the west, resulting in week after week of burning, stinging, smoke-filled air here in Alberta. If this trend continues as it’s expected to, we could well be looking at the last two years of fiery, haze-filled summers becoming the new norm – a depressing outlook, to be sure, but one that could be our new reality. Winter, though! Just try and tell me you’re not looking forward to the welcome reprieve from these sweltering temperatures that winter is sure to bring. Now, sure, it can get just as cold during the Albertan winter as it is hot during the summer, but all signs point to this upcoming season being a mild, relatively mellow affair, which is just what the doctor ordered, in my opinion. Plus, let’s face it: we’re Canadian. Snow, ice, and cold is part of our makeup – it’s engrained in our DNA and runs through our blood, and I’m always proud to embrace our nation’s heartiness in the face of the blowing cold each and every time the temperature dips into the negatives.

We can get some gorgeous summer days here, but for my money, there’s nothing quite so peaceful or beautiful as snow falling gently on the Prairies on a quiet winter’s eve. The way the farmscape sparkles like a million diamonds when the sun hits those rolling, undulating drifts in the early hours of the morning is a sight to see, and nothing in the world compares to the stunning majesty of the snow-capped peaks and treetops of the Rocky Mountains just out to the west. when it comes to thrilling outdoor activities, too. You’ll have a hard time finding hitting the slopes on your skis or snowboard in the summer months, and sledding is likewise a no-go. Hot cocoa just tastes weird when it’s warm outside, and honestly? I look better in a parka than shorts and flipflops, anyway. Plus, Christmas! You don’t see us celebrating the happiest, most-exciting holiday of the year in the summertime – all those twinkling lights, candy canes, and brightly-wrapped gifts wouldn’t be nearly as special if it weren’t for the snowy scenery and rosyred cheeks that accompanied them. I don’t mean to give summer too tough of a time – obviously, I have plenty of fond memories of sunny road trips, hot afternoons spent at the lake, and warm evenings beside the campfire. All I am saying is: give winter a chance?

Sharing Within A Marriage...

An elderly couple walked into a fast-food restaurant. The old man placed an order for one hamburger, French fries and an ice cold Pepsi. He unwrapped the plain burger and carefully cut it in half, placing one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the Pepsi, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, people around them were looking over and whispering. Obviously, they were thinking, "That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them." As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said, they were just fine - they were used to sharing everything. People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn't eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and they occasionally took turns sipping the Pepsi.

“A Week at the Gym”

Dear Diary ... For my fiftieth birthday this year, my husband – the dear – purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me. Although I am still in great shape since playing on my high school softball team, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try. I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Bruce, who identified himself as a 26 year old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. My husband seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started. The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress.

Monday:

Started my day at 6:00am. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Bruce waiting for me. He is something of a Greek god - with blond hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling white smile. Woo hoo! Bruce gave me a tour and showed me the machines. He took my pulse after five minutes on the treadmill. He was alarmed that my pulse was so fast, but I attribute it to standing next to him in his Lycra aerobic outfit. I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which he conducted his aerobics class after my workout today. Very inspiring. Bruce was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time he was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week!

His voice is a little too perky for early in the morning and when he scolds, he gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying. My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Bruce put me on the Stair Monster. Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators? Bruce told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. He said some other BS too.

Thursday:

Bruce was waiting for me with his vampire-like teeth exposed as his thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn’t help being a half hour late; it took me that long to tie my shoes. Bruce took me to work out with dumbbells. When he was not looking, I ran and hid in the women’s room. He sent Lars to find me, then, as punishment, put me on the rowing machine, which I rowed to the exit right after stopping at my purse for a snack.

I began to shut out everything that deep down I knew was important, I began to take myself far too seriously, and my mind seemed to be perpetually set one day ahead. I thought that I had everything figured out. I thought that I could tackle it with relative ease. This was, quite frankly, rather immature of me to think. There are times I still do and I think that we can all say that, but the realization that not everything will always go perfectly has inspired me to put forth a greater, more serious, and purposeful effort: one that has challenged me to pursue not what society wants, but what I truly want. That is why it is so important to have the car you drive checked out at least once a year, and not just at the annual inspection. Here are a few critical things that should be checked at least once a year.

• The condition of the engine oil - Hopefully

you are checking your oil level at least once a month, but it is also important to look at the oil itself. Dissolved particles in the oil or a burnt smell could be early warning signs of engine damage.

• The transmission fluid

- The colour and smell of the transmission fluid should be checked at least once a year. If the fluid is brown or black, the transmission could be in need of repair. A failing transmission could also cause the transmission fluid to smell burnt.

• Wear and tear on the tires

- Your mechanic will check the depth of the tire tread during the annual safety inspection, but it is just as important to see how the tires are wearing. All four tires should show even wear - uneven wear could mean you need a front end alignment.

• The wiper blades - It is easy to overlook seemingly simple things like the wiper blades, but these vital pieces of equipment should be inspected at least once a year. Changing A Life with a Backpack Mackenzie Alderson* is passionate about giving back to her community, not just because she believes in contributing, but also because she knows what it’s like to need a helping hand. “We all do our best to raise our families and sometimes things spiral and you cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel,” she says. Mackenzie had heard about the Family and Community Resource Centre but didn’t think she was going to need it. But when she felt like she had hit rock bottom in 2017, she decided to go.

“The team at the Resource Centre really made you feel like it’s ok – [hard times] happen to many, many people. My resource worker was wonderful – she made me feel welcome and worthy. When she brought two backpacks full of supplies home, her kids were delighted. “They were grateful and excited. They didn’t ask any questions, they just embraced me, which warmed my heart since it had been a rough month.” In addition to the backpacks, the Resource Centre provided Mackenzie with gift cards to get the rest of the school supplies her kids would need. “They love school so they knew what they would need. Although it made me laugh when my oldest picked out a geometry set and then my youngest wanted one too when she just needs crayons right now.” Now one year later, things are looking up for Mackenzie and she’s made it her mantra to give back whenever she can. The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the Doctor a better idea about her hearing loss. ‘Here’s what you do,’ said the Doctor, ‘stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. Doctors Are Sharing Their Stupidest And Funniest Patient Stories, And It’s Hilarious

Guy comes into the emergency department via Ambulance with burns on his lower extremities. His shoes are charred and the bottoms of his pants are definitely burned away but his skin isn't so bad. He had been trying to use a propane-powered weed burner in his yard (think flame thrower) and things got a little out of control. I smelled alcohol on his breath so I asked the guy if he had been drinking and he looked me directly in the eye and said, "Nooooo". I got drunk just standing next to him. It was a once in a lifetime set up and I couldn't help myself. As straight faced and professionally as possible I said, "Sir...liar, liar, pants on fire". The paramedics all turned at once and ran out of the room they were laughing so hard! The patient just stared at me. He was so drunk it went totally over his head. When I went to the ER to have a painful ingrown toenail removed, I was sobbing, gagging, petrified … the works. But my doctor knew how to calm me down. “Don’t worry about a thing,” he assured me. “I just looked up how to perform this operation on YouTube.” “Here,” says the nurse, handing the patient a urine specimen container. “The bathroom’s over there.” A few minutes later, the patient comes out of the bathroom. “Thanks,” he says, returning the empty container. “But there was a toilet in there, so I didn’t need this after all.” Was at a urologist in a hospital and there were a couple of power cuts. Lights dipped out, generators kicked in. As he's finishing the examination, mid-sentence, the lights go out again. He gets up and walks out to check on things. Fifteen minutes later I'm still sat on the bed with my old chap out and pants around my ankles. A nurse walks past the open door and does one of those comedy double-takes. "....do you...do you have an appointment?" Turns out the doc had actually finished the examination, and returned to the ward some 15 minutes ago. To the nurse I was just some guy who had walked in and pulled his pants down and left the door open. My patient announced she had good news … and bad. “The medicine for my earache worked,” she said. “What’s the bad news?” I asked. “It tasted awful.” Since she was feeling better, I didn’t have the heart to tell her they’re called eardrops for a reason. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

I think it is just fantastic when you can find uses for things other than what they are initially intended for. I remember I did an article on Vaseline a few years back and could not believe the response I got from our wonderful readers (I am going to have to look for that article and re-publish it). For now, I have found a few other uses for Club Soda; not only is it wonderful with Gin, but did you know it can protect your hair? Rinse your hair with Club Soda after a dip in the pool. The fizz helps combat the damage caused by chlorine. It is great to soothe a troubled tummy – Club Soda contains sodium bicarbonate, which is an antacid used to treat heartburn, indigestion and upset stomach. It makes fluffier pancakes – nix the salt and substitute club soda for half the milk in your favourite recipe. The carbonation gives the batter extra lift. You can even clean cast-iron pans – simplify scrubbing by pouring some soda in a still-warm skillet. The bubbles will help keep food particles from sticking.

6 Habits to Add More Compassion to Your Life Contrary to what many may believe, compassion is considered to be like a muscle that, as any other, can be strengthened with relevant exercises. Would you describe yourself as a compassionate person? Even if you don’t necessarily see yourself that way, I bet you’re compassionate at least some of the time (e.g., when you’re well-rested and not in a hurry), or with certain people in your life (e.g., with your closest friends). Compassion can be thought of as a mental state or an orientation toward suffering (your own or others’) that includes four components: • Bringing attention or awareness to recognizing that there is suffering (cognitive) • Feeling emotionally moved by that suffering (affective) • Wishing there to be relief from that suffering (intentional) • A readiness to take action to relieve that suffering (motivational) Contrary to what many may believe, compassion is considered to be like a muscle that, as any other, can be strengthened with relevant exercises—or can deteriorate and atrophy. In other words, your capacity for compassion can expand, if you choose. You likely never learned in school that you can intentionally strengthen inner skills such as compassion. The good news is that there are specific habits that you can practice in order to begin honing your abilities to expand compassion for yourself and for others.

Habit 1: Try the research-tested compassion practices Preliminary research from a variety of randomized controlled trials suggests that compassion can in fact be enhanced through systematic training programs. For example, the eight-week compassion cultivation training course that was developed by Thupten Jinpa, Ph.D., and colleagues at Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education suggests that adults can indeed improve compassion for themselves, and reduce fear of compassion for themselves and for others. Even if you don’t or can’t take a research-validated training program, there are numerous ways to build your compassion muscle—many of which are described on Greater Good in Action, the GGSC’s library of science-based practices. Some of these practices involve meditation, such as loving-kindness. Others are writing exercises, such as one that asks you to describe a time when you felt a strong bond with another person.

This could be an opportunity to acknowledge the interdependence that surrounds us.

Perhaps you could take a moment of appreciation for each of them. If you choose, this could be an opportunity to acknowledge the interdependence that surrounds us. Our lives, even simple trips to the grocery store, are supported by countless others.

Students in my compassion training classes receive a workbook, which contains a daily practice log and space for comments. Since the practice is different every day, it’s important that we spend time, even if just a few minutes, reflecting on what the practice was like for us: what came up, where did our attention wander to during the practice, how did our intention guide our practice, and so on. Without reflection, these practices can become another thing on a lengthy daily to-do list. It is only with reflection that we can get a sense of whether these practices are actually benefitting us (immediately or in the longer term). Additionally, I invite students even when they do not practice to still log a “0” for practice time for the day and also to write down what they did instead of doing the practice (e.g., caught up on emails, slept in, went to the gym, watched TV, etc.). This allows us to continue the routine of logging and reflecting and also allows us to examine patterns to the days where we are not practicing— perhaps what we are choosing to do instead of meditating is a higher priority, or perhaps what we are doing instead is not actually adding value to our lives. Running this experiment does not require a workbook, purchasing a fancy meditation cushion, or buying trendy new yoga clothes. These practices, which are thousands of years old, can be done right in the comfort of your own home, at the office, in your car, or really anywhere, just as you are. Afterward, reflection can take many forms—and you should adopt one that works for you.

Habit 5: Get support In my experience as a meditation student and as a meditation teacher, the practices are initially helpful when done with the guidance of an instructor. The instructor can answer questions, help troubleshoot and problem-solve, and, most importantly, help you stick with and come back to your practice. One of my favourite things about teaching compassion courses is the supportive environment that gets created within the group— it’s a unique opportunity to participate in community-based practice. I find it also helps renew one’s optimism as it reminds us that we are not alone in these practices. Many others are choosing to acknowledge suffering (their own and others’) and wish to see the relief of suffering. This notion can get lost at times when doing these practices in solitude. If you don’t have the time or money for a class, don’t despair. You might find support at a religious community or center in your area, if you have one. If you don’t, enlist a friend or relative to support your effort to make compassion more of a habit—someone who can encourage and remind you to stay on track and help you (nonjudgmentally) troubleshoot the times when you just don’t feel very compassionate in the midst of suffering.

There are lots of good reasons why sometimes we intend to do compassion meditation practices, and yet, for whatever reason, we drop the ball. Often, what people do when this happens is engage in negative self-talk by implicitly or explicitly saying things to themselves, such as “I never stick with anything”; “I’m a failure”; or “I can’t do this.” Interestingly, there’s no empirical evidence to suggest that beating ourselves up will actually help us change our behavior; in fact, some data suggest that this type of criticism can move us away from our goals rather than toward them. Additionally, one of the interesting opportunities that arises when we do not do our compassion meditation practices is to see if, in that moment, we can practice compassion for ourselves. While a bit meta (compassion for missing the compassion practice), this is essentially one of the “tests” of our practice. When we’re tempted to be harsh, critical, and judgmental with ourselves, can we instead choose to have compassion: acknowledging our suffering, noting how this makes us human and that we are not alone, and trying to be gentle or kind with ourselves (or at least refrain from beating ourselves up—“if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”)?

Establishing new habits takes time. Be patient and keep trying. Often the story that gets told about meditation is that it will be “relaxing,” “stress-relieving,” and “blissful.” While all of these experiences are possible, for many people the experience with meditation or compassion practices is the exact opposite of peaceful, relaxing, and positive. For some, depending on the practice, just focusing on one’s breath can bring about extreme anxiety or worry thoughts, bringing to mind a loved one can bring about grief and loss, imagining oneself as a young child can bring about sadness or pain, considering the suffering of all beings may bring about guilt or overwhelm. It is important to notice whether we are bringing any expectations to the compassion practice. Often people will say that the compassion practices are not “working.” When we investigate what they mean by this, they are often referring to the experience of not feeling relaxed after the meditation. While relaxation and stress relief can be the goal of some meditations, in general this is not the case with compassion meditation. Compassion is ultimately about suffering, which can at times feel difficult to sit with. Finally, people often bring the expectation that because a compassion practice generated a certain feeling or experience before (e.g., yesterday or last week), it “should” or will generate a similar feeling or experience today. As I often tell my students, reality is constantly changing (time is passing and the Earth is rotating as you read this), and thus it is a bit of a fallacy to expect that we, and the practice, will be the same day in and day out. Because the practice is different every day, we have something “new” to reflect on after each practice. It may simply be the case that the activities aren’t right for you. If loving-kindness doesn’t seem to be increasing your compassion, try something else, like writing about a time when you felt like someone showed compassion toward you, or a time when you felt spontaneous compassion for another. It is important to be open to another possibility: Perhaps compassion practices aren’t what you need right now. The good news is that there are many varieties of different contemplative practices available that can help you to become more present and nonjudgmental. Establishing new habits takes time. Be patient and keep trying. One day, you might find yourself more open to suffering—and more capable of addressing it—than you’ve ever been before. COLD AND FLU SEASON

Hello Everyone, Larry here. Fall is once again settling around us. What a beautiful season it is. It is refreshing to both Roger and I after a hot and smoky summer, and after a cold snowy winter last year. The one great thing about living in Alberta is that one never has time to get tired or bored of the season…truly. We are looking ahead to what we hope will be one of the most amazing Indian Summers ever! The colours, the cool/crisp air, the harvesting, the prep of hibernation, the last appreciative walks outside before we make our plans for indoor walking and diabetic wellness. It is a happening time in our world and probably yours, also. Roger brought me a book that he found the other day in a pile of books that he was going through. It is from 2010, but has some terrific info in it. It is the Mayo Clinic Home Remedies. As we were leafing through it, it brought to mind that very shortly COLD AND FLU SEASON will be upon us. We found a great writeup on Flu Home Remedies and thought a reminder would be good for all of us. We were reminded that the flu is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system, including nose, throat, bronchial tubes and lungs. We know that if you are generally healthy and catch the flu, you are likely to feel rotten for a few days, and then start to feel better. BUT, if you have a weakened immune system (i.e., Diabetes or any other chronic illness) the

flu can be fatal. So, this is a good time to review symptoms and remedies so that we can all be aware moving forward. Initially, the flu may seem like a cold with a runny nose, sneezing and sore throat. But colds usually develop slowly, while the flu tends to strike suddenly. While a cold feels like a nuisance, you usually feel much worse with the flu. As per the Mayo Clinic Book, signs and symptoms of the flu include: Fever, chills and sweats, headache, dry cough, muscular aches and pains (especially in your back, arms and legs), fatigue and weakness, nasal congestion, loss of appetite, diarrhea and vomiting in children.

MAY HELP EASE YOUR SYMPTOMS: • Drink plenty of liquids. Water, juice, warm soups (to prevent dehydration) • Rest. More sleep will help your immune system fight the infection. • Chicken Soup. Is good for the soul and helps to break up sinus congestion. • Pain Relievers (cautiously as needed) If you don’t know what to use, and your system is compromised, it is not a bad idea to talk to your doctor or pharmacist BEFORE a crisis occurs so that you can be prepared.

PREVENTION • Get your ANNUAL Flu Vaccination (the best time to get it is October/November). Remember, it takes up to two weeks to build immunity following a flu shot. • Wash your hands. Thorough and frequent washing of hands is the best way to prevent many common infections. Scrub them vigorously for 15 seconds at least, and then remember to turn off the taps with a paper towel (and remember to throw that paper towel into a garbage). • Eat right, sleep tight. Poor diet and/or sleep can lower your immunity and make you more vulnerable to infections. A balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, grains and protein, along with sufficient sleep is needed for a healthy immune system. In general, adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep, older children and teens need more rest, between 9 and 10 every night. The Mayo Clinic says seek medical help: If you have flu symptoms and are at risk of complications, see your doctor right away. Taking antiviral drugs within the first 48 hours after you first notice symptoms may reduce the length of your illness by a day or two and may help prevent more serious problems. Seek immediate medical care if you have signs and symptoms of pneumonia. These include a severe cough that brings up phlegm, a high fever and sharp pain when you breathe deeply. If you have bacterial pneumonia, you will need treatment with antibiotics. Now, we are armed and ready with good information to take into this season. It will help us to look after ourselves through this, always, challenging time. On that note, Roger and I wish you all a wonderful and sunny September. 10 Tips for Back-to-School Success for Your Child Going back to school carries a mixed bag of feelings. You've enjoyed the relaxed schedule of summer, but you're ready to get back into a routine. Your child is refreshed and now looks forward to seeing school pals again. One thing that still hovers over you and your child is the anxiety over whether or not the school year will be successful or a dud. Here are some tips to help your child get off on the right foot:

1. Meet the teachers. Most schools have an orientation

that enables students and their parents to meet the teachers and administrative staff. Don't miss out on this opportunity to see the people who will be responsible for the majority of your child's weekdays.

2. Have a set bedtime. One of the most important things you can do is to make sure your child gets enough sleep to stay sharp throughout the day. If your child enjoys reading or listening to music before she goes to sleep, start the routine a half hour before you turn off the lights. 3. Assign a space for everything. Your child will need a

Truthfully, French fries really aren’t that bad for you, actually the plain old potato is an exceptionally healthy low calorie, high fiber food that offers significant protection against cardiovascular disease and cancer. Potatoes are a very good source of vitamin B6 and a good source of potassium, copper, vitamin C, manganese, phosphorus, niacin, dietary fiber, and pantothenic acid. Most people, however, eat potatoes in the form of greasy French fries or potato chips; even baked potatoes are typically loaded down with fats such as butter, sour cream, melted cheese and bacon bits. But take away the extra fat and deep frying and a baked potato can be good for you as it also contains a variety of phytonutrients that have antioxidant activity. Among these important health-promoting compounds are carotenoids, flavonoids, and caffeic acid, as well as unique tuber storage proteins, such as patatin, which exhibit activity against free radicals. I’m going to feel a little less guilty the next time I indulge myself with a treat of McDonalds’ French fries. But that is not the point I want to make in this article. Let’s talk about all the new “healthy” other baked fruits and vegetables people are making these days in the form of fries or chips. Things like sweet potato and carrot fries, and beet and apple chips. Roasted Carrot Fries – Slice up some carrots French fry style, toss with some olive oil, salt and your choice of herbs, bake in a 350-degree oven until you obtain your desired crispness and serve with Ranch, French or any other dipping sauce you like. O.K. this is not rocket science, this same recipe works for any and all vegetables your little heart desires, parsnips, beets, turnips, sweet potato, pretty much all the root vegetables not forgetting the lowly potato. What an easy snack for after school. When it comes to baked fruit chips, the same method applies. Mix sugar and cinnamon or any other spice you desire, slice your desired fruit (apples work the best), bake on baking sheet at 225 degrees long and low until you have your desired crispness, and your home is going to smell amazing. Delicious for an after school snack or perfect for lunches.

“Every great warrior must learn to endure and overcome the adversities of life.” ~ Lailah Gifty Akita A word I have been hearing and talking about a lot lately is ‘Warrior’. Many people think of warrior as being a brave and fierce man with a stern expression and a large weapon in his hand; a brave soul who is prepared for battle. The Marriam-Webster dictionary defines a warrior as ‘a person engaged or experienced in warfare’. I asked friends what they thought a Warrior was and interestingly, not one of their descriptions involved a weapon or physical fighting. Instead, they described a warrior as someone who draws upon their inner strength and never gives up. A person of character who lives with integrity and honour, who is self-disciplined, who works towards being their best self. A person who believes so strongly in something that they risk personal loss in order to protect what they believe in. A person who finds their courage by stepping into and through their fear. Even Sitting Bull, the great Sioux chief, is quoted as saying that, “Warriors are not what you think of as a warrior. The Warrior is not someone who fights.” So, what then IS a warrior? Author, HeatherAsh Amara, writes that warriors are “confident, clear and bring 100% of themselves to each action” while another author, Dan Millman, says that “a warrior does not give up what he loves, he finds the love in what he does.” I believe that a modern-day warrior takes brave action, even when feeling afraid. They stay strong in their beliefs of what is right, even in the face of great challenge. They take responsibility for their life and do not see themselves as a victim. They use their inner strength to serve and protect what they honour and cherish. They live from a place of integrity. They are aligned with their truth. They want to make a difference.

Warriors exist among us in our families, places of work and our communities, and they look just like you and me. They are the people who are making a difference in the lives of others, some in big ways that gain much attention and some in smaller ways that have a positive impact on those closest to them. They are the ones forging new trails, creating opportunities in adversity and bringing forth positive change. They are overcoming their fears, owning their greatness and serving others. They are also the women who share their stories at Women Talk in Strathmore. Last month, one woman shared her story of vulnerability and her decision to bravely take an introspective journey of healing and self-discovery. She learned along the way how important is was to let go of shame and to replace it with love. Another woman spoke about a new movement started by her daughter who has Down Syndrome and who wants the world to see the uniqueness in other people by viewing the world through the eyes of magic, to be strong enough to see beyond what our beliefs tell us. The third Talker of the evening expressed her warrior spirit by reminding everyone to remember that we are all resilient, strong, and can work through anything life brings us. And finally, in our motivational moment, the value of focusing on the important things in life was highlighted along with encouragement to be clear about what those things are in order to live a life aligned with our truths. All of these women are Warriors in their own way. They do not carry swords, nor do they set out to wound others. These Warrior Women have faced challenges and are using their experiences to facilitate healing in others. They are making a difference in the world by sharing their stories of courage and are inspiring others to find their inner strength and step past their fears. For the past 12 years and along with her husband, two sons and menagerie of pets, Gaylene has been calling Strathmore home. Gaylene suffers annual bouts of spring fever, which she treats with seed catalogues, flip flops in the snow and the occasional gopher killing road trip.

Just NO There are many things that I admit in full honesty to not being good at. I am grown up enough to admit that when forced to parallel park in a tight spot, I drive around the block looking for another spot to open up. I have yet to master making bread, but do turn out

a pretty good 12-pound loaf. My ability to run in high heels has a direct correlation to my ability to fall on my ass. This same correlation comes into effect when I attach skis, skates or snowshoes to my feet. I fully am aware of my lack of skill in this area, so I spend the vast majority of my life in flip-flops or bare feet. Yes, I do wear flip-flops in December. I know that if I attempt any balances poses in yoga, I once again will end up on my butt and that the only yoga pose I have truly mastered is shavasana; the corpse pose. I know when I attempt eagle or tree pose people better be ready to yell timber! With school having just started, I worry about the one thing that I suck at most of all because I know I am going to have to try to do it and I fear the results of not being able to. This is not something I have recently discovered, oh no, this has been my arch nemesis, my Achilles high heel, my kryptonite for as long as I can remember. I, Gaylene Smith, suck at saying NO! Proof in point I spent 12 years volunteering as a Girl Guide leader and was only able to say no after giving birth to only male children. I am on the board of directors for a sports team no one in my family plays on. I agreed to make bread for a church dinner, when I fully knew that by agreeing to do so I could be putting lives at risk. (Honestly, you could build a survival shelter that no zombie could eat through out of my whole grain!) I find myself overwhelmed at times trying to keep all the balls in the air. My calendar triples in size by end of year with the countless post-it-notes jammed into it to remind me to bake cookies, supervise a field trip, sell the neighbour raffle tickets, work the bingo, attend the meeting, water the neighbour’s plants, walk the neighbour’s dog and feed the neighbour’s cat oh, and buy raffle tickets from the neighbour. I don’t know what it is about the word no, that I struggle with. I understand and empathize with people when they say no to me – I mean I have two teenagers in my house, I hear the word no a great deal. Hearing it isn’t the problem, saying it is. My momma told me I need to take care of myself and say no more often. Next time she called and asked me to go into the city and pick something up for her, I said no. She told me that she didn’t mean I should say no to her. I ended up driving into the city. So, with the influx of requests that come with the start of each school year (can you be on parent council… we need help with fundraising… the band just needs someone to coordinate the bottle drive...can you drop my child off at piano lessons on the way to your kids’ water polo… the grade twos need a craft mom!) “Maybe?” See, therein lays my problem. I don’t want to disappoint. I don’t want to be the mean person that says No and as a result the neighbour’s plants die, their dog gets fat and their cat goes hungry. It’s too much. Alongside of what makes the location of living East of Calgary so fabulous, is what is right in our communities and our very own homes. I love the fact that our communities are continually working hard to add to our parks and pathways each year, really encouraging us to get out and get active as well as increasing the safety aspect of biking, walking and running. The increase of parks, pathways and trees is bringing in more birds and other wildlife - it is so much fun to see a gaggle of geese or a deer on the canal. Most importantly, enjoy what is in your back yard and your home - winters in Alberta can be long. Take the time to add little things to your outdoor and indoor space that increase liveability. As my kids get older, I feel this is more important; not only do I want our home to be a place for fun for our family and friends, but also our kids’ friends. The door is always open and I love nothing better than hearing the laughter of my kids and their friends. Whether it is a crazy game of ping-pong, floor hockey, a baseball game or a good old dance party in my kitchen, I will welcome it all - these are what memories are made of. On top of all of these extras to make your home more lovable, don’t overlook the spaces that you spend the most time in, like the kitchen - make sure you have a functional space that allows you to prepare meals with ease and enjoyment. Isn’t it nice to see the blue sky and the stars? I was starting to wonder if we would ever see the sky again. This time of year is always so stressful for families, as you prepare to get the kiddos back to school, make lunches (ugh), detail your schedule as to how you are going to get to the swimming pool, and back to hockey, with gear on in time for practice, as well as all the other tiny things that add up in your typical day. For those of you who know me, I am not just a “type A” personality, I’m triple A—just ask Peter or Vicki, my wonderful assistants who keep this girl on track and organized. (I never micro-manage either—nope, not me). I tend to sweat the small stuff, and I realize year after year, that no matter how hard I try to be organized, there is always going to some chaos to fill in the gaps that I cannot control. Well, let’s raise a glass, tea cup, or in my case an extra-large latte, heavy on the caffeine to another school year. As always, our teachers have been hard at work prepping for the school year. We as parents have such an awesome opportunity to get involved in our child’s education by reading to and with our kids everyday, practicing fundamental math with them at home like (and this totally dates me) the times table chart. Do you remember that? It is the cube that helps you to memorize and have quick recall on your times tables. I used to make my kids write this out once a week, or play cards so that they have to add up the scores of Rummy or do the math in Monopoly. We used to play this great game in French called “Fizz Bong” (I have no idea where the name came from), but you had to know your 5 and 7 times tables. Any number containing the numbers 5 or 7 or multiples of those numbers required the person to yell out “Fizz Bong”. The 5’s were pretty straight forward (5, 10, 15, 20 etc.), but multiples of 7s took practice and some understanding of a different pattern (7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84, 91, 98, 105, 112, 119), you can see where the pattern starts again with the underlined numbers right? It takes some practice, but it was truly one of the most entertaining games we played in Mrs. MacIntyre’s French class on a Friday afternoon. Those kinds of simple things really instilled some of the fundamentals into our young minds, and though I am no math wiz, believe me, I had a decent understanding of the math that would get me through my life. All of my dearest friends were math geniuses, and I would remember being so proud as they received their honour roll calls for the incredible work they put into their classes, and it would inspire me to work harder as well. I was only on the honour roll a couple of times, but let me tell you, I worked for it. Alana Mikkelson, Julie Schniedmiller, Trevor Rueger, Patty Kemble, Wayne Grozko, Marla Muri, and Marnie Muri were my academic super heroes in my mind, and I still to this day remember them receiving their awards and their scholarships, and when I went into university it pushed me to work harder and earn those marks. Democracy's place in history is not long running. Most societies swung between anarchy and various forms of tyranny until a few hundred years ago. Demagogues, like Donald Trump in the US, gradually undermine established checks and balances. This resulted in America's ranking being reduced to a "flawed democracy" according to the Economist Intelligence Unit. In the EIU’s Democracy Index of 2017, Canada ranked sixth with a global ranking of 9.15 out of 10 – marked on five categories: electoral process and pluralism, civil liberties, the functioning of government, political participation and political culture. Thus, Canada was ranked a "full democracy".

Post-Truth Politics

Post-truth politics are not new. Historically, they were a harbinger for an illiberal democracy, empty democracy, and hybrid regimes. Although elections take place, citizens lack knowledge of the activities of those in power due to the absence of civil liberties. They led to the rise of fascism prior to the World Wars. Further, they incubate and breed social polarization. With an emphasis on ideological purity and little interest in compromise, they increase voter cynicism regarding government.

In addition, the current political disruption in the United States and the collapse of their moral leadership, provides Canadians with a warning to be aware of similar attacks on our democracy. For a long time, democratic governments (all parties) consistently reneged on promises and distanced themselves from the electorate. As a result, people lost trust in political leaders and their integrity. In addition, the decision to adopt a persistent, continual campaigning mode rather than fulfilling the role of governing, the job they were elected for, wearies the populace and fails to serve them.

Who Influences Your Thoughts on Democracy?

Today's digital communications revolution extends the reach of lies, nonsense, and shenanigans produced by a variety of influencers. The willingness of people to accept "alternate facts" vs "actual facts" and an increasing dependency on technology to provide connection and information puts humanity at risk. The answer, in part, lies in learning to ask better questions.

Democratic government was instituted for the common good. Further, responsibility asks it to create an environment where its people experience protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness. Democracies are remarkably effective at curbing the more sinister instincts of governments, despite their limitations. They provide a better alternative to theocracy, the divine right of kings, colonial paternalism, or authoritarian rule. The happiest people in the world live in full democracies. If happiness is one of our life goals, this provides substantial reasons to fight for free and fair elections, the rights of minorities, freedom of the press, and the rule of law.
