Now, it might sound like I’m looking back on the weeks and months leading up to my wedding with a slight resentment, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. I cherished the time I got to spend with my wife and our friends during all those busy mornings, afternoons and evenings. I count myself lucky to have had the means to plan a celebration on the scale that our wedding was, and to have people in my life who were there to share in our love, even if it meant that they found themselves playing with glitter and hot glue a bit more often than anybody could have anticipated. Our wedding day really was the happiest day of my life, and I wouldn’t go back and change a single thing about it. One piece of advice I will give, though, is a pearl of wisdom my dad passed on to me during the thick of the preparation: keep things simple. It’s so easy to get caught up in a hundred different Pintrest boards and Martha Stewart apps when you’re planning your wedding. Mason jars become must-have items, and suddenly it seems like the entire ceremony will be a failure if the wedding party doesn’t get the choreography just right for that entrance dance down the aisle. Before you know it, you’re driving down country roads at 3AM looking for reclaimed barn wood to make a sign in the shape of an arrow that says “This way to Happily Ever After,” eyes bleary from sleep, while different renditions of The Wedding March play on repeat over the car stereo. Okay, that might have gotten a little extreme, but I’m coming up on my point! I loved our wedding, and there were lots of special little touches that made it feel truly unique and special. As I look

back on that day, though, what stands out most vividly in my mind isn’t the cake, or the wedding favours, or even the venue. Instead, I remember the way my wife looked at me as she came down the aisle; high-fiving our ring-bearer after the ceremony; hearing the kind and loving words that were delivered by our friends and family; and being surrounded by the warmth and support of those people who are dear to me. I guess what I’m trying to say is this: enjoy planning your wedding. Make it special, and spend the time doing too much research on candles and creating special name tags for each individual place setting. While you’re at it, be sure to check out the other great wedding articles in this issue of The Newsy Neighbour, which are full of fantastic advice for planning a beautiful event. It’s not every day that you get married, so dive in headfirst and make it a celebration to remember. When push comes to shove, though, keep in mind that all these little details are simply window dressing, and that the true star of the show is the love and commitment between two people that everybody is there to celebrate – so take a step back, enjoy the ride, and don’t be afraid to keep it simple. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour
