For anyone that came to the awards night, you have already heard this, but we just loved it so much that we wanted to share it with everyone... Hi everyone, thank you all for coming tonight. I wanted to say a little something tonight but every time I wrote it, it always sounded like a pitch. So I scrapped the whole thing and re-wrote it. The Newsy Neighbour is the largest magazine of its kind. We have multiple ad sizes to meet your needs. Just call me…. Hahaha Anyways, my name is Denise Geremia and I am in charge of advertising at The Newsy Neighbour Magazine. Also, I want to be very clear that I am DENISE. Not Aleesha. People are continuously getting us mixed up. I am the good looking blonde one. Many of the people in the audience tonight are advertisers with The Newsy Neighbour. We wanted to thank you for your support of our magazine. It’s because of you that we get up every morning and do what we do. The Magazine is getting bigger and better every month. We get to do something we LOVE, which is put this magazine out for homes and businesses in Chestermere, Langdon, Strathmore and surrounding areas every month. It’s because of you we do the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival in downtown Strathmore every June. This year marks our 3rd year, and every year we seem to get bigger and better. It’s because of you we get to do these awards. You as a business work hard throughout the year every year, and these awards are how we can not only showcase you, but make sure our 46,000 readership sees you succeed as well. It’s because of you we got to start our own free soccer program in Strathmore. The first year of Munchkins Soccer, we had 65 kids. Last year, we had 155. This year will be even bigger and better, and an amazing way we can get kids involved in extra curricular sports from ages 3-6 for free. Throughout the last few years, we’ve continuously changed the business plan for The Newsy Neighbour Magazine. We went from our whole purpose being putting out a great read every month, to working every month to make a difference. We changed. Once we changed, once we changed the face of the magazine, once we stepped outside the box and brought our passion for the magazine and helping people, the Newsy Neighbour Magazine took on a new life. And it’s why we can do what we do for all of you. Just because you start a business, it doesn’t mean people will support you. For us, we know print advertising is expensive but integral to the survival of any business. So anyone who is willing to give us their hard-earned advertising dollars, we want to do everything we can to give them the same support from our readers that they gave to us. We are passionate about supporting local businesses because it’s the local businesses who are keeping the magazine going every single month. And what better way to thank them than by getting them more business? Again, thank you for your support.

the vast number of categories and nominees, Aleesha and Denise were able to keep the presentations light and fun, announcing the Gold Winners by including their businesses within an anecdotal skit, and deftly balancing an efficient pace of presentation while being sure to give each winning business a moment in the spotlight. Comedian Matt Billon took the stage following the awards presentations, and brought home some big chuckles as he joked about his opinions regarding Strathmore, married life, and the popularity of Truck Nutz on Alberta roads. The room roared with laughter during his generously long act, and he set the stage perfectly for New Soul Duo, who took to their instruments and played a series of fun, danceable tunes to carry the night to its conclusion.

The 2017 Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards Recognizing a Year’s Worth of Local Business Excellence

The stage was set; the honourees were in attendance, the crystal trophies glittered, all lined up and ready to be presented to deserving businesses and individuals – it was the 2017 Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards! Back for a second year in the wake of an incredibly successful event in 2016, the awards show had grown exponentially in size and ambition over the intervening 365 days. Moving from the Strathmore Travelodge over to the Civic Centre in order to accommodate the expanded guest list, it was immediately clear just how much bigger the Awards Show had gotten. There were over 80 categories of nominations, and more than 40 tables full of the brightest entrepreneurs and business owners from the Strathmore, Langdon, and Chestermere areas. Celebratory bunches of balloons were stylishly peppered throughout the banquet hall, contributing to the jubilant and congratulatory atmosphere. A silent auction was set up on one side of the room, with all items and prizes donated by local businesses. On the other end of the hall, Legends Kitchen and Bar was serving up refreshments, while also hard at work cooking up a buffet-style meal that looked like it stretched on for about a mile. While it seemed to take a good long while for our table’s number to get called to grab some food, we’ll chalk it up to the fact that the plates we saw returning from the buffet line were piled high with some of the best-smelling, tastiest-looking food we’d seen in a long while. Once we got there ourselves, we all heartily agreed: Legends had knocked it out of the park.

In all, the 2017 Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards Show was an unmitigated, absolute success. The performances were great, the food was top-notch, and everyone present was in high spirits. More than that, though, is what the Awards Show did for the community. Once again, it brought business owners and entrepreneurs together from all industries and walks of life to celebrate what makes Chestermere, Langdon, and Strathmore so great. It shone a bright spotlight on local commerce, and reminded everyone that the hard work and long hours they had put into their businesses had paid off, and that the community recognized them for their efforts and everything they’d worked hard at over the past year. Lastly – and perhaps, a little selfishly – it gave us at The Newsy Neighbour a chance to communicate, face-to-face, how much love and respect we have for each and every reader of our magazine, and to thank all of the people and businesses who make what we do possible. “This event is incredibly close to my heart,” Aleesha intimated to the gathered audience as the evening closed out, “[It] is only possible because of the amazing community we live in, and the incredible businesses that help make Langdon, Strathmore, and Chestermere the remarkable places that they are.” Truly, she spoke for all of us at the magazine when she delivered that message. On behalf of The Newsy Neighbour, we’d like to extend our deepest thanks to everyone in Chestermere, Langdon, and Strathmore for making the 2017 Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards a smashing success. We couldn’t have done it without you. Congratulations once more to all the award winners and nominees – we can’t wait to do it again next year! ~Kyle Penn

Following the meal was the entertainment, and it did not disappoint. Local Okotoks musician Samm Smith, kicked the evening off with three brilliantly-performed songs, including a stirring rendition of The Neighbourhood’s “Sweater Weather,” giving us all a preview of what we can expect when she appears on the upcoming season of The Voice. After Smith came the awards segment of the evening. Even with

none of this would ever have happened. Your love, support, and encouragement throughout all the late nights of planning and preparation for this event are truly appreciated, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will never be able to fully express my gratitude to you beautiful ladies.

I’d like to take a moment to recognize the unbelievable efforts of everyone who helped make the Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards such a success. This event is incredibly close to my heart, and represents the biggest night of the year for me, and for many members of our community. I’ve loved every second of working to make it a memorable evening, but I certainly didn’t do it alone.

Thank you to everyone who attended. The event is only possible because of the amazing community we live in, and the incredible businesses that help make Langdon, Strathmore, and Chestermere the remarkable places that they are. I truly can not wait until next year; the 3rd Annual Readers Choice best in Business Awards. Aleesha Gosling

To everyone at the Assist Business Centre: thank you for all of your hard work and dedication. The staff at Assist Business put in astonishing amounts of work – often well past their normal hours – to help make sure everything was ready for the awards, and I couldn’t be more grateful for their support. The folks at the Strathmore Chamber were also incredibly instrumental in helping to make the event a success. Bob Wells (VP), Barbara Armstrong (Secretary) and Doug Ryan stepped up in a big way whenever we needed a hand, and were an absolute joy to work alongside. Thank you so much. Of course, I couldn’t forget to acknowledge Greg Thompson: your friendship and support throughout the many ups and downs that come with planning something like the Business Awards was invaluable, and I’m so glad to have had you along for the ride. Logan Cox, Paul Gill & Greg Thompson of Legends. Your overall impact on the night deserves an award in itself. The catering you guys provided, is the most popular compliment we are getting on our event. We are beyond happy with the quality, the diversity and the taste. It is exactly what we wanted to serve to all our guests. Between that and service that you guys provided at the cash bar, we at The Newsy Neighbour Magazine, want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us make the Readers Choice Best in Business Awards such an incredible success. We will most definitely have you cater the event again next year! Kyle Penn, I am so honoured to have you part of the team. You will never know now much I appreciate you, your writing is impeccable and you continue to bail me out when I need the help at the last minute. I don’t know what I would do without you. There were so many incredible volunteers the night of the event as well that I need to thank: Amy Neufeld, Christa MacKenzie, Morgan Rose, Shayeka Legault, Reuben Wilms & Sim Grewal Gill, Britney McMahon & Lisa Grimes - Thank you. Lastly, but most definitely not least, I would like to thank Denise Geremia and Tifannie Hartwell, my best friends, family and colleagues from The Newsy Neighbour magazine, without whom facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Here’s a sneak peek into a typical day at the vet clinic from the perspective of an Animal Health Technician, and why we love our job to the point of exhaustion. The veterinary team gathers early in the morning at 7:30 am for a 10+ hour shift. Our team discusses the cases that are currently in the hospital, and the vet’s treatment plan for each patient. This is an opportune time to collaborate ideas and work together on difficult cases to provide the best possible care for each pet. In hospital this morning, there are multiple animals that have spent the night for various reasons, most of them being a spay procedure from the day before. Tech Kristin gets to work on these sweet girls while I tend to a Golden Retriever named “Riley,” who got into the garbage two days ago. Unfortunately for Riley, he now has a case of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (severe bloody diarrhea) and is on intravenous (IV) fluid therapy and medications to help heal his intestinal lining. As my tech assistant Lorraine and I perform his morning health check, administer medications, and check his IV fluid line, Riley gazes up at us with his tail wagging. We cannot help but fall in love with his sweet brown eyes; adorable.

For the Love of the Job

W

ith over ten years in the veterinary industry, I can say that the most common misconception I hear is that the job of a veterinary team is all puppies and kittens. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s TRUE!

We get to see puppies and kittens on a regular basis for health checks, vaccinations, and illnesses. But it’s also so much more.

Spirit Of Christmas

YOUR SUPPORT OF THE LOCAL STRATHMORE BUSINESSES IS INVALUABLE. thenewsyneighbour.com

I head over to discuss Riley’s morning parameters with his veterinarian, and quickly side step out of the way as tech Katrina gets ready to move her spay patient into surgery. The 6-month old Border Collie pup is prepped and ready to head in, belly bared and surgically clean. Cap, mask and gown on, I hear the surgeon snap on her sterile gloves and waltz into the surgery suite. This will be one of the best parts of her day, I’m sure! I catch Riley’s vet finishing up an appointment and show him Riley’s morning chart. He is happy with the improvement, and comes over for a follow up examination of the pooch. He then makes a quick phone call to the owner and confirms that Riley will be heading home this afternoon! I hear one of our receptionists, Carly, asking who is responsible for large animal calls this morning. Tech Jorieke and Dr. Becky are both summoned to a horse who is colicking and thrashing. Carly advises the owner to get the horse up and walking while the girls quickly load up the truck with supplies. It’s -25 degrees celcius today, but this is of no matter; they zip out of the clinic faster than you can say “angry orange cat.” Speaking of which, I turn around to see how our cute ball of orange fluff is doing. He is in recovery, with a urinary catheter tied into one end, an IV coming from the other end, and a cone of shame (e-collar) to prevent him from pulling out his catheters. He is actually looking quite happy, eyes half closed, and even purring if I dare say so. Dr. Kate was successful in unblocking him, and a stream of urine is trickling into his collection bag.

As we’re finishing up, I glance over at my fellow technician Erin, who is quickly running to grab a pair of cat gloves. A hissing and spitting orange ball of fluff has entered the room in a full rage, daring anyone to come near him. Veterinarian Kate suspects he is blocked and cannot urinate. He is in extreme pain and taking out his anger on the vet and tech. Once they get a firm hold of him, he bites down hard into Erin’s leather glove. A second technician steps in and quickly administers a sedative and pain control upon Dr. Kate’s orders. They allow him to cool down in a kennel with a blanket draped over the cage door. Erin turns to me with a smirk on her face. Pulling off the glove and showing me her finger she said, "It worked!

As I’m waiting for this cute Border Collie pup to wake up, I see that Dr. Rand has come back with a Rottweiler who has a distended abdomen. Tech Jenn is quick to help out, taking the big guy and her tech assistant Christine into x-ray for a full set of abdominal radiographs (X-rays). I remove my patient’s endotracheal tube as she swallows and sits up. I pat her on the head, talking quietly to her as we place her back in her kennel with a warm blanket. She is happy to be there and falls back asleep shortly after, likely dreaming of neutering the vet.

With Valentines day looming, we have been asked to give you some ideas on what we think the best gifts for diabetics are. We put our big toes together and this is a small list that we were able to come up with.

Edible Gifts For Diabetics

So what edible gifts can you safely give your favourite diabetic? In general, try to think QUALITY, not quantity. • NUTS are great. They contain no sugar or starch, they are full of fibre, plus they satisfy that urge to have something crunchy to snack on instead of potato chips. Good nuts tend to be expensive, so they are a welcome treat. • There are some pretty tasty, low or no-sugar chocolates available that are certified as safe for diabetics. • Some no-sugar candies are quite yummy, too. Do some research to see what's available. We know that Shoppers and Co-op have them for sure, as well as a local Shhugar shop! • Sweet baked goods made specifically for diabetics can be ok, although some are just plain ol’ yucky. • Many people who have their blood sugar under control can indulge in the occasional sugary treat, in moderation. If your favourite diabetic is in this position (ask first), get them a small, exquisite quantity of the best you can afford, such as a tiny box of the best handmade chocolate truffles or pralines available in your town, or one perfect home-baked cookie. For the decadent diabetic, the top end expensive stuff will bring much more joy in each precious mouthful. • While a big fruit basket is not a great idea, small quantities of really great fruit would be much appreciated, especially if it's something exotic and expensive. • 'Safe' savoury foods include things like sausage, cheeses, hams (try not to get the ones with sugar glaze) and beef jerky (look for the ones without a lot of sweet marinade/sauce). And of course, all diabetics love non-edible gifts! Chocolates and sweets aren't the only Valentine's Day gifts. Flowers are nice of course, and so is jewelry. Or how about a beautiful book, a lovely scarf, or taking us away on a great vacation? So many options out there! There you have it folks, plenty of ideas to make the big day special for us diabetics. We hope your day is as special as ours is going to be. We love to pamper each other on Valentine’s and every other day of the year, too. Remember, its not just a day for sweeties; it’s a day to remind others they are special. Until next month, Make your Footprints Count. Larry and Roger

On the first day, God created the dog and said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years." The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?" And God saw it was good. On the second day, God created the monkey and said, "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span." The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?" And God, again, saw it was good. On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years."

The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?" And God agreed it was good. On the fourth day, God created humans and said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years." But the human said, "Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?" "Okay," said God, "You asked for it." So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone. Life has now been explained to you.

rarely be without them, both conscious and unconsciously. BUT if we understand what the mind is comprised of, it will allow us to begin to CHOOSE the thoughts we allow to remain and to begin to CHANGE the thoughts we learn are unhealthy - into thoughts that support our happiness. The more we do that, the more positive our mind will naturally become, and therefore, the more positive our life experience.

The 3 Aspects of the Mind

3. Ahamkar: This is the part of the mind that makes this about ME. In other words, the ego, whose role is self-preservation and survival. “The bull is running at ME! I need to get out of its way!” The ego is a powerful part of the mind that is often a ruling influence in our decision-making. In it's healthiest state it keeps us alive and well. In it's unhealthy state it can deeply affect how we move through our lives.

For example, if a thought looks like this: “I am tired. I look awful. I don’t like the way I look, I am so ugly, no one loves me.” I can recognize the thought for being an aspect of my judging mind (who says I look tired, how do I know that? Feeling ugly is based upon something I believe I should look like from my past experiences) and my ego mind (which is trying to protect me from feeling self-conscious or risk being hurt, but in this instance, is limiting my happiness and keeping me isolated). Once I am able to notice the thought, I get to choose to bring a wave of more positive thought to counter the negative: “I am tired. There is nothing wrong with looking the way I feel, I do not need to look a certain way to feel and be loved.”. Even if I don’t believe myself right away, I have opened myself up to a much more positive experience in my life. I have begun the work that it takes to counter negative

One of the oldest self-help books ever written is called the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Within this very important yoga text, which is over 2000 years old at best guess (and possibly much older than that), is an outline to becoming the healthiest and happiest version of ourselves that we possibly can – written long before the self-help fad ever came along. This is an intense text that has been shared by many generations of gurus to students, and is found in almost all yoga lineages. I have read the book several times, as have most who study yoga history and philosophy. I have spent many hours in discussion about it in both formal and informal settings. Over the past 6 years, I have used this as a reference for how to develop my own well-being, and have been blessed to be able to share some of the wisdom it offers with my students over the years. One of my favourite pieces of information to share from these writings concerns the three aspects of which the mind is comprised. It has helped to free me (somewhat) from being ruled, mentally and emotionally, by the patterns and whims of my thoughts. Thoughts are part of being human – we shall thenewsyneighbour.com

2. Buddhi: This is the aspect that organizes the information to make sense in regards to our own experiences and understanding. “The bull looks angry. It is running in this direction”. I would know this because I have had previous interactions with a bull and/or I understand the idea of distance, direction, speed, momentum, etc.

What is empowering for us in this information, is it (a) empowers us to begin to notice the thoughts, (b) to understand a bit more about why they are arising, and (c) decide whether we want to accept the thoughts as they are or to replace them (consciously and on purpose) with a healthier thought.

(and how to free yourself from negative patterns).

the information provides. The example often used would be, “I see a bull. It is running.” This is our sense perceptions, perhaps one of our 5 senses but may also often apply to intuition, before we begin to judge the information.

Yoga teaches us that the mind is not WHO we are, it is simply part of our human experience. We are empowered to develop our mind the way we would develop the muscles of our body – one thought at a time, we can train our mind into optimum health. This is pretty deep information, but I hope that I have managed to present it simply and in a way that will help you to put it to work for yourself right away. If you have any questions, this is a conversation that I would love to carry on with you. This definitely isn’t an easy or pleasant thing to think about, but it’s important to keep in mind that there are people in our province – and in our community – who are struggling to afford basic necessities such as dental healthcare. Moreover, many of these same individuals also have families, and are equally unable to provide the finances to keep their children’s oral health in good standing. It’s heartbreaking to imagine a child struggling with the pain of a cavity, simply because her parents cannot afford to make the costly trip to the dentist.

Thankfully, we live in a truly incredible community, full of people and businesses who look out for one another, and Langdon Dental is stepping up to help in a big way. February 3 marks the very first Langdon Dental Cares 4 Kids Campaign, an amazing initiative that is their way of giving back. On this day, Langdon Dental will be offering basic oral care at no cost to children up to 18 years old who would not normally have access to these services. They will make a bevy of treatments available, including checkups, cleanings, fillings, extractions, fluoride, scaling, polishing, and oral hygiene education – all completely free.

It’s easy to get involved. Simply send an email to info@langdondental.com nominating a youth for the event, and include a bit of information on the challenges their family is facing accessing basic dental healthcare. The fantastic staff at Langdon Dental will work hard to accommodate everyone they’re able to. With turnout expected to be quite high, they will work to prioritize those individuals needing urgent care first.

Stepping Up to Bring Dental Care to Those Who Need It Going to the dentist isn’t most people’s idea of a great time, but we grin and bear it – pun intended – because of how important it is to maintain good oral health. Sure, it’s never fun getting a filling, but the alternative of letting a cavity go unchecked and untreated is more than enough encouragement to be sure to visit the dentist regularly – or, at least, whenever you get a toothache! Unfortunately, for many people, going to receive dental care isn’t an option. Times are tough – particularly in Alberta – and that means that some folks simply don’t have the financial means to attend regular, preventative dental appointments, or even enough money to take care of oral health problems as they crop up. Many individuals have found themselves recently unemployed with all the trouble the economy’s been going through over the past few years, and even those who have jobs may not have the benefits or insurance to cover a trip to the dentist – especially when the bill can often total in the thousands of dollars.

People are constantly looking for better ways to improve their health that doesn’t require too much time commitment, money, or effort. Although I’d argue that anyone who

Improved circulation – Hot water increases blood flow to the

surface of the body and cold water drives blood to the core of the body. This “accordion-like” effect increases blood flow and speeds up circulation, and brings fresh oxygenated blood and nutrients to organs and glands and takes away toxins and pathogens.

Reduces muscle pain – Hot and cold cause your muscles to

expand and contact, which can create a gentle detoxification as toxins are squeezed from your muscles.

Some health promoting activities that cost very little money and effort include sun bathing, grounding, and meditation. All three of these activities can have a profound effect on your health and none of them require too much effort or money (of course location and time of year will have an effect on your ability to do some of these things).

Improves lymphatic flow and reduces lymph nodes –

Hot and cold water stimulates the lymphatic system by causing it to relax and contract in response to hot and cold water, respectively. This creates a “pump” action which helps move lymphatic fluid which may have become stagnant in the system. This can reduce build up of fluids and ease inflammation, as well as allowing the immune system to attack any foreign pathogens in the fluid.

Another activity that doesn’t require anything more than a shower and hot and cold water, is hot and cold hydrotherapy. This age old practice is gathering acceptance by health enthusiasts as a significant way to increase livelihood, and it can take less than 15 minutes of your day.

Improves mood and focus – When you’re exposed to cold,

your body increases production of norepinephrine in the brain, which is involved in focus and attention. It also improves mood and alleviates pain, partly because it lowers inflammation.

Have You Ever Heard of Genmaicha? This is a new one for you; have you ever heard of “genmaicha”? No? Me neither until the other day. A friend of mine told

me about it, as I was one of those lucky people who caught the flu this year. I can truthfully tell you that I don’t think I have ever been that sick in my whole life and it lasted just about two full weeks. She said that “genmaicha” might help me. After a week of being that sick, truthfully, I was just about ready to try anything. So, you are asking yourself—what the heck is she talking about? Well the word “genmaicha” is a Japanese word that means “brown rice” but what it actually is, is “white roasted rice” and you use it to make tea. You combine organic white, green, oolong or herbal tea with the roasted rice. It is also known as “popcorn tea”. The tea’s flavour is strong and distinctly nutty, and is just as delicious cold as it is hot. Some internet sites say you cannot use any old rice, it must be either mochi rice or Japanese (uruchimai) rice, but others say rice is rice. Who knew there were so many different kinds of rice? The instructions sound quite simple and I must say I have never heard of making tea out of rice!

This is what you do:

Use organic brown/white rice (short or medium grains of rice). Spread a thin layer of brown rice into a medium-sized pan. The thin layer will ensure even toasting of the rice grains. Place the pan onto a stove-top burner and turn the heat to a low to medium setting. Toast the rice until it takes on a dark brown colour and emits a nutty, toasted aroma. Depending upon heat and pan, toasting time can vary, but it generally does not exceed much over five minutes. Do not leave the rice unattended because it can burn quickly. Cool the rice on a plate when it is done, then place the rice inside of a container for storage. Determine how much genmaicha you want to brew. One tablespoon of toasted brown rice will produce one strong cup of tea. Experiment with these amounts to suit your preference. Place the desired amount of rice inside of a tea sieve along with the tea leaves of your choice. One teaspoon of tea leaves will pro-

Genmaicha is a traditional Japanese green tea. The lovely vegetal green flavour, indicative of Japan's steaming process, is balanced by the nutty flavour imparted by the roasted rice. The combination becomes an earthy tea that is as soothing to the soul as chicken noodle soup—light smooth with sweet nutty undertones. My goodness gracious, I don’t know about you but I am always willing to try anything that could benefit my health and, quite frankly, how could drinking a cup or two of tea every day hurt you? Get out the frying pan, I’m on my way to brown a little rice. To your health! Kathryn Hartwell

duce one cup of tea. Boil water and pour into tea pot, add your genmaicha tea. However, if you are brewing just one cup, pour the hot water into cup then place the tea sieve into hot water & steep for approximately three minutes. They say that “Genmaicha Tea” benefits tea drinkers in many ways. It is also a great natural alternative to diet pills and other weight loss programs, which could bring harmful side-effects to the body. According to researchers at the University of Tokushima’s School of Medicine in Japan, drinking Genmaicha Tea on a regular basis can improve a person’s metabolism and boost energy levels. As we all know, having better metabolism is one of the secrets to staying fit because your body can successfully convert its stored fat into energy. Drinking this tea on a regular basis has a few health benefits. It can help reduce your chances of developing serious medical conditions, including cancer and heart problems, because genmaicha tea is rich in antioxidants that can improve the body’s defenses against diseases. These antioxidants can also improve skin conditions and mental function, as well as strengthen the bones and the teeth. Rice? Really? On a related website, I also found this information in regards to drinking genmaicha. The tea offers an array of antioxidants such as carotenoids and ascorbic acid. If drank on a regular basis, it can help boost your immune system and also helps drain the toxins from your body. Genmaicha with green tea has higher total antioxidants than black tea and even more than some vegetables. Wow! Catechins, a type of natural phenol and antioxidant within the Genmaicha Tea helps fight cancer causing cells and drinking this tea on a regular basis helps lower your risk of developing heart disease. Genmaicha has an active ingredient called theanine, which communicates with your brain and has a soothing relaxation feeling.

FIVE WAYS TO KEEP YOUR PET’S TEETH HEALTHY Here Are Some Tips For Your Pet’s Dental Health Nutrition

1) Feed your pet nutritious food that is species-appropriate — high in quality protein and low in carbohydrates. Two good choices are grain-free and raw. 2) Give your dog raw bones or high-quality dental chews to help keep plaque and tartar from forming on their teeth. Do not feed dogs cooked bones, as they may splinter and, if swallowed, may cause injury to their digestive tract. Always supervise your dog when they’re enjoying a raw bone or chew to prevent choking or tooth damage.

Regular Inspections

3) Get to know your pet’s mouth by doing regular inspections. Check for bad breath that’s not food related along with loose teeth, plaque and tartar build up and unusual lumps or bumps along the gum line or on or under the tongue. 4) As part of your pet’s annual check-up, make sure your vet checks their teeth for any problems. Remember, even if you are diligent about keeping your pet’s teeth clean, some may still require a professional cleaning by your veterinarian.

Daily Brushing

5) The gold standard for caring for your pet’s teeth is daily brushing. If, for whatever reason, daily brushing is not possible, there are several good oral health products on the market, in spray or gel form, that help keep plaque and tartar from building up on your pet’s teeth. Laura was fantastic with my pup Hana. Not only did she take her first thing in the morning - nice and early, but she had her done around lunch time. I can honestly say, it is one of the best grooms Hana has had so far. When I picked her up, she was happy, smelled wonderful and was incredibly soft. The first thing I noticed is how even her legs were. She isn't easy to groom since she doesn't like to have her feet touched. We found a regular groomer out of Laura. Thank you so much. First of all, the cleanliness of your water is of utmost importance when doing hot and cold showers, so ensure you have a filtration system in place to purify your water, if required. Secondly, to get more out of your hot and cold shower routine try skin brushing using a natural bristle skin brush. Do this right before you do your hot and cold shower routine for additional benefits. You can learn more about dry skin brushing and how to do it, here. Lastly, while hot and cold showers are generally safe, if you have any sort of medical condition, discuss it with your doctor beforehand. Since both hot and cold put stress on your heart and cardiovascular system, it may be contraindicated for those with serious heart conditions. Listen to your body, and go slowly with your hot and cold tolerance and build up to the full routine, if required.

In order to raise money online, it is imperative to explain exactly what you need. For example, you can announce that you are asking for assistance paying for the venue, entertainment, food or even your honeymoon. Any large wedding fundraiser should be split up into four phases to make it easier to hit your goal. For example, all successful businesses create quarterly goals to keep them on track for their annual revenue numbers. This is the same idea that wedding fundraisers need to follow. Music Feature of the Month:

Hurricane Lisa Get Ready to be Blown Away It was on a bitterly cold night in January that I first saw Hurricane Lisa.

Schroeder will be performing at Legends Kitchen and Bar in Strathmore on

February 18th.

Be sure to come out to this amazing show, and experience the brilliant musicianship of Hurricane Lisa firsthand – this is one you won’t want to miss!

Pulling up to Mugs – a tiny pub in downtown Calgary – I left the warmth of my car, jammed my hands into my pockets and made the dash across the slippery parking lot, my breath steaming in the frosty night air. Stepping out of the cold and through the doors, I was instantly transported to another world. The venue was a small, cozy corner pub, with a bar taking up most of the central real estate and an intimate stage set up to the right of the entrance, facing out towards several tables and booths. The atmosphere felt thick and heady, and there almost seemed to be a haze in the air, as though it was 1995 again and you could still enjoy a cigarette with your beer. Looking around, though, I realized that the bar was completely smoke-free, and that what was hanging in the air wasn’t exhaled smoke, but rather the vocal stylings of Hurricane Lisa, creating layer upon layer of sultry, bluesy ambiance and filling the room with nuance and emotion. If you haven’t yet encountered Lisa Schroeder onstage and in front of a mic, it’s hard to do justice to the unique timbre of her voice. Her take on it? “I sound like I just went and drank a bottle of whiskey…but I feel like I get away with it!” Think Melissa Etheridge or Janis Joplin: raspy, soulful, and enrapturing. I got the chance to chat with Schroeder about her music career and her time performing in Calgary following her show at Mugs. “I’ve been involved in music my whole life...anything that had acting, music, any of those kinds of hings I got involved in,” Schroeder told me, when I asked her how she came to find herself singing and performing. Then, while taking part in a jam session at The Blues Can about five years ago, Schroeder was confronted by a heckler. Rather than backing down or getting upset, she used the stage and her music to stand up for herself – and in that moment, she realized she had truly found her passion: “It was then that I knew,” she told me, “that I wanted to be on that stage, and that I wanted to a performer and not just a singer…I always thought that the stage was my alter ego, but really, it’s not. It’s where I’m actually myself.” Seeing Schroeder perform at Mugs that night, it’s clear that these words came from her heart. She exuded confidence and personality while singing and playing guitar, and was completely at ease joking with the crowd between songs and taking time to connect with individual members of the audience. Of course, it helped that backing her that evening were some incredibly gifted bandmates. On drums, the brilliant Gavin Sorochan – a staple in the Calgary music scene. Bass duty was handled by Murphy Martin, hailing

from Kimberly, BC and equally at home onstage in both Calgary and Seattle, where he’s a regular fixture at live music venues. Finally, Schroeder was joined by “Southpaw” Bob Kohl on guitar, a player whose name is well-known within the local blues scene and who has run guitar and jamming workshops at past Calgary Bluesfests. While Schroeder was accompanied by some pretty hard-hitting talent, it’s important to note that in true blues-fashion, Hurricane Lisa is a force unto herself – players come and go, and there are regular musicians that she makes a habit of working with, but ultimately, Schroeder’s aptitude and career stand on their own, making each show an interesting and entirely unique experience. What’s on the horizon for Hurricane Lisa? Well, quite frankly, a lot! “At the moment, I’m working on three separate projects,” Schroeder informed me. These involve a project with another local Calgary vocalist, an increased focus on bringing more to Hurricane Lisa’s live act, and excitingly, a studio album of original tracks. “I’m almost done writing,” she said. “[It will be ready] hopefully within six months, but no later than the next year.” While that sounds like a lot to take on all at once, Schroeder has recently found herself in the position to be able to fully commit to her music, for better or worse. “I was diagnosed last year with bumps in my head, and I was told by my doctor that I can’t work,” she confided in me. “They’re not cancer, I’m not going to die, it’s not a big sad ending, but I said ‘I’m still going to gig,’ because without gigging, my emotional state wouldn’t be any good.” Then, after a pregnant pause, Schroeder reflected: “Thank goodness I have music, or I’d have nothing.” The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

A little bit of everything

Gaylene Smith has been a waitress, tree planter, canoeing instructor, cemetery caretaker, fund development officer, communications officer, marketing coordinator, and currently is a career coach, and first aid instructor on the side. She still isn’t sure what she wants to be when she grows up other than healthy, wealthy and wise, although right now she is willing to take just one of the three. Gaylene can be reached by phone at 403-934-4305 or gsmith@mcbridecareergroup.

For better or worse, today (January 20, 2017) Donald J. Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America; and I, like millions of others, tuned in to watch the events of the day that were happening, not only on the balcony of the

White House, but around the word. Today was a day when most of the world took a little pause, perhaps said a little prayer, and wondered how the next four years would play out.

John Maxwell said, “Leaders become great not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.” That’s why leadership skills are such a valuable commodity to employers. A strong leader can take a ho-hum team and inspire and motivate them to become so much better. A great leader will empower others to learn more, do more, be more. Strong leaders don’t march

I didn’t plan to watch it, but much like a horrific car wreck that spread carnage across the highway, I was unable to advert my eyes. (Guess you know my opinion on the businessman, TV personality, and now politician.) Regardless, if you watched the inauguration as a Trump support or protester, the outcome remains the same. Donald Trump is now in a role that is often referred to as Leader of the Free World.

The good news for employees, job seekers and possibly the free world is leadership skills can be learned. Poor leaders can learn and change and become better leaders – perhaps even great leads. Old dogs can learn new tricks, and hopefully, so can presidents and if they are not able to lead there will always hopefully be someone to say you’re fired even if it might take four years.

OUR Leaders

thenewsyneighbour.com

It doesn’t matter if we are working at the till in a fast food franchise, on an assembly line, in a desk at school, in a corner office on the top floor of Trump Tower, or sweeping the floor in that same tower: our leaders will influence our day to day actions. I don’t mind working extra hours for someone that acknowledges and appreciates my effort but don’t expect a worker to do more than necessary for someone that they don’t respect or like. I once worked for someone that had a platform built for her desk so that when you were called into her office you were forced to look up to her. Yes, I had to tilt my head up to look her in the eyes but she was someone I could never look up to. She never once asked how can I help you succeed in your job? Never said good try or good effort. Never acknowledged her staff in a positive manner to other departments. No, she just said, “If you don’t like it leave – you are all replaceable”. She motivated with fear of loss of income. Guess what, her department had the lowest production rate and the highest number of days taken off by staff. She also had the highest rate of staff turnover. I don’t think there was one person in the department that was inspired to do more than the bare minimum to get the job done. We would have done better without a leader. On the other side of the coin I have been blessed to work for individuals that had fantastic leadership skills. These were the ones that took the time to ask how they could help me be better at my job. These were the ones that encouraged me to develop new skills and challenged me to grow in my career. They didn’t worry that I would one day be better than them - they strived to make that happen. From these leaders, you happily drank the corporate Kool-Aid and then asked for seconds.

in front of the crowd expecting cheers and accolades. Pomp and circumstance don’t matter to them. True leaders can be found in the crowd and behind the crowd. Encouraging, motivating and inspiring the best in each of us. We all know that we are more likely to put in effort and hours for someone we respect, like and believe in.

Doesn’t matter where I am, in the grocery store, cooking in my kitchen, just taking the dogs for a walk – I always seem to have something on my mind! I try not to waste my thinking time on trivial thoughts, so now I am trying to catch myself when the thousands of unconstructive thoughts are running through my mind and replace them with fabulous positive thoughts—you know, thoughts that will actually make a difference in my life. There is a blog I follow called “Cauldrons and Cupcakes”. Nicole, the creator of this blog, lives in Australia and her way of life is so different from mine in so many ways. Although she is a world away and we are so different, I feel a real connection to her and the things she writes about. The other day she was writing about affirmations, in which I am a true believer. I believe if you truly believe and practice affirmations, you can change anything you like in your life.

This second one, we have all heard before: “Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.” What a wonderful idea; now if we could all believe in that concept. Nicole says it unlocks her ability to expand and grow. It has attracted teachers, new directions, inspiration, breakthroughs, healing, and miracles. Hey, I would go for a miracle any day. I think we all could use a miracle or two now and then.

And this third one, I’m sure we can all identify with. Have you ever been around a negative person? Hello, if you have not, you must live on a deserted island all by yourself, and then it could still be true. I think sometimes we can all be negative and not even be aware that we are acting that way. The affirmation is, “I am stronger than this.” We all get in a rut sometimes or just feel a little down or wrung out or maybe something sad has happened in your life. You need something to pull you out of the blues. Just keep saying to yourself, “I am stronger than this”. I am stronger than negative people. I am stronger than trauma or tragedy. I am stronger than ignorance or whatever other crappy life circumstances I am currently dealing with. I am stronger than this. Try it! What could you possibly have to lose? I AM A... OREGANO Yia sou! That's "Hello" in Greek. Me lene or, "joy of the mountains", that's oregano in Greek and yes, I am oregano and, you guessed it, I am from Greece. Greece was the first country to grow and use me thousands of years ago. I became popular in North America when soldiers returning from World War II brought me back with them to use on their pizzas. Now, everybody loves me on just about everything—the Italians especially love me and use me in almost all their dishes! I am very popular! I'm not just used for culinary purposes; I am also used for medicinal and I was believed to hold magical properties as well. Ancient Greeks believed that I was a useful poison antidote and was used extensively both internally and externally to treat skin irritations and infections, dropsy, convulsions, and as an antidote for narcotic poisons. In Shakespearean times, I was used for just about everything. It is said I encourage good luck and good health. I was used in spells for happiness, tranquility, luck, health, protection and letting go of a loved one. I am always happy and I symbolizes joy. Growing oregano near your home is said to protect it from evil forces and if you spread me on the ground, I can repel snakes. I can ease a toothache and help you if you have a cough or asthma.

In the western culture, I'm generally associated with spaghetti and pizza, but I am so much more than just flavour for your food. The Romans would chew me as a cure for rheumatism, toothache, indigestion, and as a cough suppressant. Now you're not going to believe this, but I have a higher antioxidant activity than wellknown foods such as vegetables, berries and fruit. Three different types of my cousins -- Mexican, Italian and Greek -- scored the highest in antioxidant activity of different herbs. I had 3 to 20 times higher antioxidant activity than the other herbs studied. I'm pretty strong for just a little herb; I have 42 times more antioxidant activity than apples, 30 times more than potatoes, 12 times more than oranges and 4 times more than blueberries. Just one tablespoon of fresh me was found to contain the same antioxidant activity as a medium-sized apple. I even have a higher antioxidant potential than garlic! Chinese doctors use me for fever, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, and itchy skin. No wonder they call me "Joy of the Mountains". Researchers say that you should use me instead of salt and artificial additives. I am much better fresh; I can be used in so many different foods, in salads, casseroles, soups, sauces and poultry dishes. And, of course, pizzas! Think about it, in addition to adding flavourful nuance and zest to meals, I can provide significant health benefits when included in a balanced diet. I am so wonderful! OK enough about me, now I'm going to help you with some magnificent recipes so you can use me every single day. You know I love you and want you to be happy and healthy. Use me! It's ok, I don't mind.

MARINATED BEETS

I love pickled beets but have never made them with oregano— sounds good to me. Plus, what a healthy treat! I put them in all my sandwiches and a great little make-ahead side dish that goes well with roasts and veggie feasts. Not quite pickled but still sweet and also a little sour. About 5 good sized beets 2 cups white or red wine vinegar 8 cups water pinch of salt 2 garlic cloves, sliced 1 tbsp dried oregano 1 red chilli, finely chopped 1 cup olive oil Wash and scrub the beets under cold running water. VISITING LAS VEGAS

They say that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. While it's likely that many hope this rings true, considering how many things happen in the city of Las Vegas, the phrase is almost certainly wishful thinking. There is something for everybody both on and off The Strip, and despite its 'Sin City' nickname, not all of it is rated R. Along the Las Vegas Strip there are plenty of eye-catching landmarks that will delight visitors of all ages, from the famous dancing fountains at the Bellagio, to the gondola rides at the Venetian. In fact, most of the hotels have an attraction or two to lure in the casual passerby’s; the Mirage has a volcano show, New York, New York has a roller coaster that weaves its way in and out of the hotel, and Mandalay Bay Resort has a much-loved aquarium with an imposing shark tank. Dazzling concerts, breathtaking shows, musicals, magic and the ever-popular Cirque de Soleil performances are among the many spectacles on rotation along The Strip, offering visitors different delights depending on

the date. The lights and sounds on the street flood the senses and add to the exuberant atmosphere. Las Vegas is known to be a paradise for gamblers, and the excitement in the air in the many casinos can be contagious. The dining options along The Strip are plentiful and will accommodate every budget, while drinks flow freely on casino floors. For those looking to dance the night away, clubs often host internationally famous DJs, although the lines are usually long so early attendance is advised. If the Las Vegas Strip feels overwhelming, a day trip to see the Grand Canyon might be exactly what is needed, while any visitors with an interest in astronomy might enjoy stargazing in Death Valley National Park, one of only three International Dark Sky Parks in the US. Closer to The Strip, Downtown Las Vegas has really come into its own in recent years, with spaces such as Fremont Entertainment District and the Arts District giving the previously neglected historic center a renewed sense of character and purpose. The truth about Las Vegas is that whether you arrive seeking nonstop stimulation or much-needed rest and relaxation, your visit can be tailored to your specifications. It is certainly the perfect playground for adults, with high levels of energy buoyed by enthusiasm, opulence and reckless abandon, but it also has a gentler, softer side that enjoys much of the eye-catching wonder of The Strip without the neon-lit adrenaline rush. Exploring the wonders around Las Vegas - both natural and man-made - is an incredible experience. Drew Carey once said, "Everything and anything you want to do, you can do in Las Vegas" and he wasn't wrong. So, what would you like to do?

Happy, contented parents are the greatest assets children can possess as they develop their own relationship skills. But the truth is, if a marriage is in trouble, the children often suffer in pain and silence. If our relationships are in trouble, our life, our homes our happiness and our future is in trouble. Relationships are at the epicenter of civilization but they are also at the root of nearly every human-to-human problem we see in society today. Whether the problem is conflict, infidelity, divorce, abuse, addictions, bullying, abandonment, harassment, violence or even suicide and homicide, the problem can often be traced back to the home and family relationships. I do not say that to point fingers, to judge, criticize or blame you or anyone in particular. These are the facts. Relationship struggles combined with many other factors contribute significantly to societies’ struggles.

YOUR RELATIONSHIP DESERVES TO BE RENEWED, REVIVED & ENHANCED?

R

elationship stability is being eroded. Marriages and other types of partnering are crumbling at a rapid pace. Broken marriages and divorce are at an all-time high. This is often due to unresolved conflict, inability to communicate effectively, unmet needs and unreasonable expectations, all of which send relationships down the slippery slope of fractured love, trust and intimacy.

Of course, many relationships are happy and thriving, and we love hearing the success stories. Harmony, interest and closeness are essential for keeping a relationship alive and healthy. During the month of February, we think of Valentine’s Day, chocolates, hearts, flowers and romantic getaways. Those things can mean a lot in expressing sentiments that often go unsaid throughout the year. But if a relationship isn’t healthy, those syrupy, tasty tokens often do very little to change what is really going on inside a relationship.

Relationships are at the basis of everything we do. They create the foundation of our homes, schools, churches, worship facilities, the workplace, and in our communities and our world at large.

Through our experience, we’ve found there are no perfect relationships. Even the happiest relationship can benefit by: • Enhancing their communication skills. • Learning new ways to relate to each other and to resolve issues rather than sweep them under the carpet. • Finding ways to nurture fondness, admiration and support. • Taking responsibility for your own happiness, your own weaknesses and for your contributions in relationship difficulties. • Discovering the power of, “I’m sorry” or “I forgive you.”

More than anything, to resolve relationship issues takes courage, determination and a willingness to learn and make some changes. It may be something as simple as learning how to discuss issues without avoidance, anger or defensiveness. It may be finding time to focus on each other rather than all those other things that distract us. Most importantly, it requires a willingness to make things better, taking intentional steps to make time and space for each other so the relationship can not only survive, but can thrive, by investing in yourselves to find better and more effective ways of relating. I thought it would be fun to list some of the well-known signs that body language experts study and recognize. It is said that when talking to a person, the information that we receive can be broken down as: • 10% from what the person actually says • 40% from the tone and speed of voice • 50% is from their body language.

body language say about you?

As we all know, communication is essential in society. Advancements in technology have transformed the way that we correspond with others in the modern world, yet when conversing face-to-face, it's not only speech we verbalize that matters. Body language is truly a language of its own. We all have quirks and habits that are uniquely our own. What does your body language say about you? And what can you learn about others by becoming aware of what some of the signs mean?

HEAD

• Lowering one's head can signal a lack of confidence. If someone lowers their head when complimented, they may be shy or timid • Touching or tugging at one's ear can indicate indecisiveness • Sincere smiles encompass the whole face (noticeable in the eyes) • A false smile usually only engages the lips • Tilting one's head can symbolize interest in something or someone • Overly tilted heads can be a sign of sympathy • Closing of eyes or pinching at the bridge of one's nose is often done when making a negative evaluation • When a listener nods, this is usually a positive message and relays that they are interested and paying attention • However, excessive nodding can imply that the listener has lost interest but doesn't want to be rude • Touching/rubbing one's nose may indicate doubtfulness or rejection of an idea • Sticking out one's chin toward another may show defiance • Resting a hand on one's cheek is often done if they are thinking or pondering; and stroking the chin can mean the person is trying to make a decision

UPPER BODY

• Pushing back one's shoulders can demonstrate power and courage • Open arms means one is comfortable with being approached and willing to talk/communicate • Folded arms show that there is a sort of barricade between them and other people (or their surroundings) and indi-

What is also a good source of phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, riboflavin, vitamin C, B-12? What has an amino acid score of 106, which means it is a complete/high quality protein, essential for building and repairing muscles and tissue? What provides, in a single protein serving (3 ounces), 2/3 of the amount of iron you need in a day, plus the vitamin C that helps you better absorb the iron? (Iron is an integral part of oxygen transport in red blood cells and for the processes in your cells that make energy. Fatigue and anemia result from low iron diets). What has a high level of B12, which is a vitamin that is needed for making DNA and maintaining nerve function? CLAMS

The surprise answer is CLAMS!! Despite their salty taste and chewy texture, clams are one of the healthiest sea foods. A three-ounce serving, about eight to nine small clams, contains only around two grams of fat and 100 calories. Packed full of healthy omega 3 fatty acids, clams are a great way to relieve hunger and get an energy boost. While clams do contain cholesterol, this is present only in very small amounts. Clams are safe to eat because of their low levels of contaminants; however, it's important to always make sure to properly cook clams prior to consuming. Now, I’m with you if you have ever stopped and looked at the live clams at the grocery and thought – NO WAY!! But I have just discovered the tiny, cute clams in cans and even though they are not fresh, they contain all the same extremely healthy stuff as the fresh ones (maybe a little less, but still there). I have started adding them to a lot of different recipes. Add them to any soup. Clam chowder is always a popular choice or try a bisque or Manhattan-style chowder. They are lovely with your pasta in red or white sauce or pan-seared in olive oil for fresh vegetable pasta primavera. I have stuffed them in mushrooms and peppers. I have even added them to my rice! But my favourite way to eat clams is in clam dip. There are so many variations of clam dip, and you will never get tired of making it and, of course, eating it! Here are a few of my very favourite:

1 package (8-ounce size) cream cheese, softened 3 green onions, chopped fine (include green tops) 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 can minced clams, drained 2 tablespoons clam juice from drained clams Mix all ingredients together to a smooth consistency. Chill at least 1 hour or you can bake this for about 30 minutes. Serve with just about anything, on toast crisps, chips, tortillas, crackers even vegetables.

NEW ENGLAND CLAM DIP

1 pint sour cream 2 cans of chopped clams, with three tablespoons of their liquid 1 ½ tablespoons fresh lemon juice, or to taste ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, or to taste ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste ½ teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper, or to taste Spears of red bell pepper, celery and endive, or salted potato chips, for serving In a small bowl, combine the sour cream and clams and mix well. Add the lemon juice, Worcestershire, cayenne pepper, salt and white pepper. Adjust seasonings to taste. Cover and refrigerate until chilled, at least an hour. Serve with spears of red bell pepper, celery and endive, or use your imagination.

DELECTABLE CLAM DIP

8 ounces cream cheese 24 ounces cottage cheese 1 can minced clams Lemon juice Put the entire brick of cream cheese in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds at a time until the cream cheese is soft and spreadable. Dump all the other ingredients into the bowl. For the clams, you want the entire can, juice and all. Add the lemon juice - I sprinkle it in, probably no more than a tablespoon. With a spatula, stir the dip, making sure to scrape the sides so everything gets mixed in well. And that is all there is to it!

KIM CHEE CLAM DIP

½ jar Kim Chee, chopped fine 8 ounce cream cheese 1 small can baby clams, drained and chopped Optional: 1 to 2 spoonsfulls of Best Foods mayonnaise Bag of Maui potato chips Strain Kim Chee before chopping. Add all ingredients together

Taking Care of Business “In Huff we Trust!”

Calgary Stampeder fans know

exactly what I’m talking about. As the New England Patriots play in yet another Super Bowl, comparisons are being made between Bill Belichick and John Hufnagel.

Belichick took over the Patriots in 2000. During that time, they have only missed the playoffs twice: in 2002, after winning the Super Bowl with a kid named Tom Brady, and in 2008 when Brady missed the season with a torn ACL. 11 times in the AFC championship game and now 7 appearances in the Super Bowl. It really is a modern day (salary cap) dynasty. John Hufnagel took over the Calgary Stampeders in 2008. His team has never missed the playoffs. They have played in four Grey Cup Championship games (winning two) and they have been to the West Final in 8 of those 9 years. While the conversion rate is disappointing, in my opinion, it’s still a modern-day dynasty. The only difference between the Belichick dynasty and the Hufnagel dynasty is a quarterback. 39 year old Tom Brady has been the pillar for Belichick, while Hufnagel has employed Henry Burris, Drew Tate, Kevin Glenn and Bo Levi Mitchell. While you can debate whether or not the Stampeders are a dynasty, there is no debate the organization is the model franchise of the Canadian Football League. In most circles, February 14th is known as Valentine’s Day. In the CFL, it’s also the first day of free agency. There’s expected to be a record number of players hit free agency this season because of the league’s awful decision to allow one year contracts. While Calgary will not be immune, Hufnagel has led the way to keep his core in place. The kickers, Rene Pare-

des and Rob Maver were taken out of play early. The same can be said about sack masters Charleston Hughes and Cordarro Law on the defensive line. The biggest surprise came on January 24th when the club announced a new deal with former first overall pick Pierre Lavertu on the offensive line. The 2015 western all-star was rumoured to be home sick and wanted to play closer to home. The Stampeders did release defensive end Frank Beltre so he could sign a future deal with the New York Jets. Fellow DE Micah Johnson and the league’s outstanding offensive lineman Derek Dennis could follow Beltre to the NFL (contract status was up in the air at the time of printing this article) but the point is, Hufnagel has created a culture and environment where players do not want to move. He has a reputation as a tough, but fair negotiator. More importantly, the players know in Calgary you have a chance to win.

The Calgary Flames did not do a lot of

winning in January and that has the organization in a precarious position heading into the stretch drive of the NHL regular season. A playoff spot that looked very solid in December is now hanging by a thread. So what has gone wrong? Let’s reset the five burning questions I asked in this space last October: 1) Will the Flames be better than the Oilers this season? This question has already been answered. The Oilers swept the season series winning all four games. 1 out of 8 points could cost the Flames a coveted playoff spot. 2) Is Glen Gulutzan a better coach than Bob Hartley? The jury is still out on what I called one of the most baffling moves of the season. 3) Have the Flames solved their goaltending woes? Not even The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

close! We thought Jonas Hillar, Karri Ramo and Joni Ortio were erratic? Brain Elliot has been a bust while Chad Johnson has been good but is obviously not a number one goalie. 4) Can Johnny Gaudreau produce on the road? This has been a disappointing year for the Flames most electric player. A broken finger cost him 10 games but his lack of production at home and the road has been a mystery. 5) Did the Flames overpay for Troy Brouwer? While I won’t say he has been a bust, he is not a great bang for the buck! He may be great in the room but he’s an average skater that has a bad habit of taking bad penalties. As I wrote in December, it’s tough to give Brad Treliving a passing grade and obviously the organization agrees as they are not rushing to give their general manager a contract extension.

Sand said, “There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved.” However, the Happiness Experiment says otherwise. Before we get to the experiment, let’s look a bit closer at what ‘happiness’ is.

Happiness is NOT feeling good all the time and living in a blissful state, it is NOT a destination (I’ll be happy when…) nor is it about having everything you want. According to Sonja Lyubonirsky, author of The How of Happiness, it is “the experience of joy, contentment, or positive well-being, combined with a sense that one’s life is good, meaningful and worthwhile.” As human beings, we have a desire to be happy but how can we find and keep happiness in our lives? There are several ways and one of the most powerful is to have at least one close relationship in which we feel safe to share our personal feelings, in addition to having a social network of people to spend time with. Discovering a greater meaning in our lives can bring happiness, as can extending acts of kindness by caring for others. Another

road to happiness is to have an interest, activity or even a goal that challenges us but that we are internally motivated to pursue and we feel ‘in the flow’ when engaged in it. Exercise, healthy eating, meditating, getting adequate sleep, being outdoors, smiling, using our personal strengths and living our values also bring us feelings of happiness. At the end of 2016, a friend and I decided to practice another simple strategy for happiness: the practice of gratitude. Every evening, we share one thing from our day that we are grateful for and some days it is a challenge and it is not always something pleasant. We have shared a hard lesson learned, a loss that reminded us to not take things for granted, or a kindness of a stranger during a time of need. Studies show that regularly finding things to be grateful for makes people happier, less stressed and they have a stronger sense of belonging. This brings me to The Happiness Experiment in which people were given a quiz to determine their current level of happiness and then asked to write a letter to the person they were most grateful for in their lives. They were then surprised with the instruction to call that person and to read them the letter. These calls were emotional and heart-felt. Afterwards, they were given the same set of questions with a variation in wording, to once again measure their happiness factor. For people who made that call and expressed their gratitude, their Happiness Factor increased 4%-19% and the unhappiest person at the start of the experiment had the largest increase. So is love the only source of happiness? I don’t believe it is. Opportunities for happiness are all around us and one of those places is Women Talk in Strathmore where grateful women grow their social network, extend acts of kindness and honour the personal feelings of others. It’s a place where friendships are formed and strengthened amidst much frivolity, laughter and lively conversation. This month is the one-year anniversary of Women Talk in Strathmore and thus far, 24 wonderful and courageous women have

Private Members’ Motion M-108 Happy New Year and best wishes for a prosperous and healthy 2017! The past year has been an economic challenge for some, especially in the resource and ranching sector. Let’s hope for a better 2017. A big upcoming project that I am working on is a Private Members Motion that I expect to introduce later this year. The text of the Motion, called M-108, is as follows “That, in the opinion of the House, the government should recognize that the ongoing contribution of ranchers and farmers as stewards of the land and conservationists is part of our history, proudly shared by all Canadians, and should consider establishing policies which would support and encourage the development of private farm and ranch land conservation and restoration projects.” M-108 is an important way for the Parliament of Canada to recognize the role that our hard-working ranch and farm families work every day to ensure that environmental preservation is always a number 1 priority.

and ranches would simply disappear. It’s in the best interest of ranchers and farmers to ensure that they are doing their best to be good stewards of the land they depend on for their livelihoods. I have also been trying to emphasize this fact as a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development. Ranchers and farmers play an important role in environmental protection, and I believe that as we try and find better and more effective ways to protect our environment, we will need to rely on the expertise of ranch and farm families to help us find solutions. I will be working in the months ahead to seek support from MPs from all parties, as well as Canadians in every province and territory for this important motion. I invite you to share with your family and friends, and to contact my office with any questions or comments that you may have. My designated staff working on this project is my Legislative Assistant, Andrew Poncia. He can be reached at 613-992-0761 or martin.shields@parl.gc.ca. I will also be posting updates on my website regarding M-108, so feel free to check back in the future at www.martinshieldsbowriver. ca.

I believe it is important to share with all Canadians this important fact. Environmental stewardship is critical to our ranch and farm families. Without a healthy and strong environment, farms

Seriously, I wondered, who is this guy? After speaking for twenty-five minutes, not once mentioning the prop hanging around his neck, Coach Scolinos appeared to notice the snickering among some of the coaches. Even those who knew Coach Scolinos had to wonder exactly where he was going with this, or if he had simply forgotten about home plate since he’d got on stage. Then, finally:

“...You’re probably all wondering why I’m wearing home plate around my neck,” he said, his voice growing irascible. I laughed along with the others, acknowledging the possibility. “I may be old, but I’m not crazy. The reason I stand before you today is to share with you baseball people what I’ve learned in my life, what I’ve learned about home plate in my 78 years.” Several hands went up when Scolinos asked how many Little League coaches were in the room. “Do you know how wide home plate is in Little League?”

Ph: 403-888-9931

After a pause, someone offered, “Seventeen inches?”, more of a question than answer.

“That’s right,” he said. “How about in Babe Ruth’s day? Any Babe Ruth coaches in the house?” Another long pause.

ROOFING • RENOVATIONS

“Seventeen inches?” a guess from another reluctant coach.

Don't widen the plate!

“That’s right,” said Scolinos. “Now, how many high school coaches do we have in the room?” Hundreds of hands shot up, as the pattern began to appear. “How wide is home plate in high school baseball?” “Seventeen inches,” they said, sounding more confident. “You’re right!” Scolinos barked. “And you college coaches, how wide is home plate in college?” “Seventeen inches!” we said, in unison. “Any Minor League coaches here? How wide is home plate in pro ball?” ... “Seventeen inches!” “RIGHT! And in the Major Leagues, how wide home plate is in the Major Leagues?” ... “Seventeen inches!”

In Nashville, Tennessee, during the first week of January, 1996, more than 4,000 baseball coaches descended upon the Opryland Hotel for the 52nd annual ABCA's convention. While I waited in line to register with the hotel staff, I heard veteran coaches rumbling about the lineup of speakers scheduled to present during the weekend. One name, in particular, kept resurfacing, always with the same sentiment — “John Scolinos is here? Oh man, worth every penny of my airfare.” Who is John Scolinos, I wondered? No matter; I was just happy to be there. In 1996, Coach Scolinos was 78 years old and five years retired from a college coaching career that began in 1948. He

“SEV-EN-TEEN INCHES!” he confirmed, his voice bellowing off the walls. “And what do they do with a Big League pitcher who can’t throw the ball over seventeen inches?” Pause. “They send him to Pocatello!” he hollered, drawing raucous laughter. “What they don’t do is this: they don’t say, ‘Ah, that’s okay, Jimmy. You can’t hit a seventeen-inch target? We’ll make it eighteen inches or nineteen inches. We’ll make it twenty inches so you have a better chance of hitting it. If you can’t hit that, let us know so we can make it wider still, say twenty-five inches.'” Pause. “Coaches…” pause, "... what do we do when our best player shows up late to practice? When our team rules forbid facial hair and a guy shows up unshaven? What if he gets caught drinking? Do we hold him accountable? Or do we change the rules to fit him? Do we widen home plate?” The chuckles gradThe Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Pause. Then, to the point at the top of the house he added a small American flag. “This is the problem in our schools today. The quality of our education is going downhill fast and teachers have been stripped of the tools they need to be successful, and to educate and discipline our young people. We are allowing others to widen home plate! Where is that getting us?” Silence. He replaced the flag with a Cross. “And this is the problem in the Church, where powerful people in positions of authority have taken advantage of young children, only to have such an atrocity swept under the rug for years. Our church leaders are widening home plate for themselves! And we allow it.” “And the same is true with our government. Our so-called representatives make rules for us that don’t apply to themselves. They take bribes from lobbyists and foreign countries. They no longer serve us. And we allow them to widen home plate and we see our country falling into a dark abyss while we watch.” I was amazed. At a baseball convention where I expected to learn something about curveballs and bunting and how to run better practices, I had learned something far more valuable. From an old man with home plate strung around his neck, I had learned something about life, about myself, about my own weaknesses and about my responsibilities as a leader. I had to hold myself and others accountable to that which I knew to be right, lest our families, our faith, and our society continue down an undesirable path.

Coach Scolinos died in 2009 at the age of 91, but not before touching the lives of hundreds of players and coaches, including mine. Meeting him at my first ABCA convention kept me returning year after year, looking for similar wisdom and inspiration from other coaches. He is the best clinic speaker the ABCA has ever known because he was so much more than a baseball coach. His message was clear: “Coaches, keep your players—no matter how good they are—your own children, your churches, your government, and most of all, keep yourself at seventeen inches."

“If I am lucky,” Coach Scolinos concluded, “you will remember one thing from this old coach today. It is this: if we fail to hold ourselves to a higher standard, a standard of what we know to be right; if we fail to hold our spouses and our children to the same standards, if we are unwilling or unable to provide a consequence when they do not meet the standard; and if our schools and churches and our government fail to hold themselves accountable to those they serve, there is but one thing to look forward to ...” With that, he held home plate in front of his chest, turned it around, and revealed its dark black backside, “... dark days ahead!”

When he turned it toward the crowd, point up, a house was revealed, complete with a freshly drawn door and two windows. “This is the problem in our homes today. With our marriages, with the way we parent our kids. With our discipline. We don’t teach accountability to our kids, and there is no consequence for failing to meet standards. We widen the plate!”

I am thrilled to be part of the Newsy Neighbour family. While I do not have the honour of representing Strathmore residents, you are ably served by my Wildrose colleague Derek Fildebrandt. Please contact his office at: 403-934-4400 or Strathmore.brooks@assembly.ab.ca.

As you know, I am now the Wildrose Opposition Shadow Minister for Education and Status of Women. On the education front, there are several issues of concern. Many of you contacted me when the Government (with no notice) shut down the Trinity/ Wisdom home schooling board. Regardless of the merit of any financial issues, it was completely wrong to leave 3500 students in the lurch with no plan to have other boards take over. The Government, faced with court action, has finally seen fit to appoint an administrator to oversee the Trinity/Wisdom operations, which is what the Wildrose advocated from Day 1 of this fiasco. Think of the stress and lost instructional opportunities that this heavy handed action caused. I support parental choice in education, be it public, Catholic or other faith, private, charter, or home-based and you may be assured I will be keeping a close eye on the Government. We are also concerned by the apparent decline of interest in performance standards as shown by the Calgary Board Of Education’s decision to replace grades with a 1-4 metric and cut the reporting frequency. Parents need to know how their child is doing and there should be regular interaction with educators. Teachers tell us they are frustrated by this and the entire Inspiring Education program that confuses students, parents, and the teachers themselves.

Hello Newsy Neighbour readers! Looking out the window, there is a picture-perfect scene with snow covered fields and hoarfrost covering all the trees and bushes. We truly live in a beautiful

part of the world. I would like to begin with thanks to Aleesha, Denise, and the rest of the Newsy Neighbour team for all their hard work on the Second Annual Best in Business Awards. See this issue for a list of winners. We had the great pleasure of attending the Awards Gala. It was wonderful to meet so many of you and to see the huge variety of local businesses that we have. Please support them; we all win when you do. The entire evening was great fun with great food and entertainment. We’ll be there next year.

The Chestermere, SE Rocky View, and Veterans Food Banks have all seen a huge increase in demand for their services this past year. Please remember that the holiday season may be over but the need remains. We collect for all of them at the office. As always, we love to hear from you.

It has been a busy time as your MLA. On the same day as the Best in Business Awards Gala, I was a panelist for Ask Her, an organization dedicated to advancing the cause of having more women enter local politics. This was followed by Chestermere’s Go Girl event, attended by girls aged 10-16. Topics ranged from self-esteem to self-defence to face painting and Zumba. I was privileged to participate and contribute my perspective on what it means to be a woman in the political arena, a businesswoman, and a mother. These young ladies are our future and from what I can see, our future is in great hands. After the Best in Business Gala, it was off to Indus for a community fundraiser for a local fellow afflicted by Lyme Disease. The Indus Recreation Centre was packed and the generosity of so many of you was wonderful to behold. One of the organizers said: “It’s what we do.” And that says it all.

Toward A More Sustainable County As the years move along, almost every rural municipality is faced with the problem of how to sustain their social infrastructures. These include schools, churches and sports facilities. They also include social support people, like medical professionals, and social interactions, like 4H clubs and recreational sports teams.

Can we stop and reverse this trend?

Every year, more schools are shutting down or consolidating into regional schools. Kids need to be bussed for greater distances. Villages lose their grocery stores and gas stations. Everyone has to go to the “Big City” to get supplies.

What can we do to prevent the depopulation of our rural counties?

BUSINESS

Winner

First, we need to look at what is causing this attrition to happen. Simply put, the cause is a lack of kids living in the country. We no longer have a critical mass of kids in many of our rural communities. If you increase the number of kids in any geographical region, you will reverse these trends.

2016-2017

There are any number of reasons why we don’t have as many kids out in the rural counties as we use to, but the number one reason is corporate or large farms. In the past, when most farmers could survive with a number of quarters or maybe a section or two, it meant we had several families with kids on each six or eight sections of land. And this was reasonably evenly spread across the country landscape. A little higher density on the irrigated lands and a little lighter on the drylands, with a substantial reduction as we went into the special areas. This spread of kids throughout the county gave a reason for hamlets and villages to have general stores, schools, churches and recreation facilities. If there are enough of these hamlets, one or two of them will have some type of medical service. Maybe even a hospital. Kids are, of course, a product of the parents that raise them. So with enough kids come enough people to maintain voluntary fire departments and other volunteer positions that keep a county moving. Every summer, a few ball games are played because there are enough adults to make it worthwhile in each small urban center. There may be a curling rink and an arena.

Without the kids, some of these will survive. For a little while. Pretty soon you need three or four of these hamlets just to get a ball team together. Churches close or combine with adjacent churches and so it goes.

In this day and age, it is almost impossible for a farmer to make a living on a few acres unless they are into specialty products or into confined operations. Also, they have much bigger equipment so need fewer employees therefore fewer families are involved in agricultural pursuits.

These farmers are very good at producing food for the world, with some of the highest yields anywhere. Unfortunately, they just are not that good at raising kids. Anyone want to guess at their yield rate? Maybe only one kid per five thousand acres? Maybe only one per ten thousand? I don’t know what the exact yield is, but probably the long form census can tell us. If we can’t get the farmers to raise a large crop of kids, what can we do? We can look at ways of increasing other employment opportunities that will sustain families. We can develop hamlets, towns and acreages that act as bedrooms for the bigger centers. We can understand that many employment opportunities now include consultants and work from home situations, which would work well in hamlets or on acreages. We can look for ways to develop methodologies that make it easier for companies that provide employment, to relocate into the counties. For some counties that are blessed with good health care facilities nearby, it may also be worth looking at residences designed to allow aging in place. While this does not necessarily help county sustainability the way a good crop of kids will, it might be part of the solution. When designing this type of residence, it would be good to look a little further afield than your standard three-bedroom bungalow with five steps leading up to the front door. One or two bedroom, slab on grade, energy efficient homes would be more suitable for this type of resident. These would be smaller homes on smaller lots and therefore a bit more affordable. Grandparents could increase the size of our hamlets.

So how do we implement this? Really, there are only two main options. Increase the size of our hamlets and villages or develop more acreages. Designing and building larger self-standing town-sites may help in some ways but are also problematic in others. And with great care, sometimes developing lands suitable for commercial/business/employment centers and industrial parks will help. Some municipalities have bylaws in place to encourage the expansion of existing hamlets. The idea is to encourage growth nodes and to cluster population growth in these areas. This should prevent farmland fragmentation. Has this actually encouraged growth of these small urban centers? With the exception of some villages in close proximity to large urban areas, most villages are barely holding their own, many have dissolved and returned to County management. Either the Counties need to get more aggressive in finding ways to promote the growth of the hamlets and villages or we need to look at alternate growth patterns. In future articles, we will look at some of the possibilities to promote a consistent crop of kids and some other strategies that may make the counties more sustainable. IF HISTORY OR HERSTORY IS CALLING YOU – TAKE ACTION #ReadyForHer Winners write history. More accurately, history is about what stories are told and survive. Our province has great herstory (intentional spelling). Alberta’s “Famous Five” changed the law in the groundbreaking Persons Case. This resulted in a shift not only in Alberta and

Canada, but also globally throughout the British Empire. Studies prove diversity in decision-making brings greater success. The United Nations reports women should hold at least 30% of elected seats for a government to reflect women’s concerns. If you are interested in participating more fully in the democratic process, consider running for office on October 16, 2017. Alberta’s General Election takes place then and municipalities elect new councils.

History Saw Women Legally Recognized as Persons Canadian history documents that in mid-19th century, full citizenship was legally limited to men. By the end of the century, laws across the country mandated near-universal, white male citizenship at the federal and provincial level, explicitly excluding female voters. The reason women are able to vote today is due to the Suffrage Movement arising during this period. Women united and began to agitate for the vote as well as social reform. They changed herstory. Suffragettes boldly campaigned, marched and petitioned so todays women across this great land enjoy the privilege and have the right to make their own choices, share their opinions, vote, work, and more freely pursue their dreams. This law changed less than 100 years ago.

On October 18, 1929, a landmark legal decision for Canadian women took place. Women were legally recognized as “persons” under British common law. The decision was made necessary because The British North America Act, which governed Canada at the time, used the word “persons” when it referred to more than one person and the word “he” when it referred to one person. Those who wanted to keep women from being appointed as judges and senators claimed women were ineligible for these positions because they weren’t recognized as persons under the law. Five Canadian women did not agree and petitioned for change. The Supreme Court of Canada turned these Albertans down saying “persons” did not include women. They persisted and took their petition to the Privy Council of Britain, Canada’s highest court at the time. The Privy Council ruled, “The exclusion of women from all public offices is a relic of days more barbarous than ours”. Nellie McClung, one of the Famous Five, stated, “Women are going to form a chain, a greater sisterhood than the world has ever known.”

Herstory Still Goes On

People marched in the footsteps of others. They saw past privilege and beyond themselves. Participants respected and heard divergent voices. Common values, such as family and freedom, brought them together. The unique individuality existing in each was honoured and embraced. Some were uncomfortable and felt unsafe, yet participated as they recognized the significance of this moment in time. They left stronger, more confident and willing to let others feel uncomfortable with the fact these women are “on fire.” Henrietta Muir Edwards, another member of the Famous Five, was 78 years old when the petition was signed and forwarded to Ottawa. Your most important work is always ahead of you, whatever your age, never behind you. Some women are lost in the fire. Some are built from it. On January 21, 2017 millions of women gathered for the Women's March. This happened despite differences of location, nationality, faith, socio-economic status, age, and partisan affiliations. They marched for different reasons, yet were united in empathy and respect for women globally. Participation occurred on all seven continents. It is perhaps the largest activist march ever.

Is it how we feel about our partner? Is it how we feel about our children, siblings, parents, grandparents and other members of our family? Is it the feeling when you arrive home and your pet is waiting there for you as if you were the only person in the world and you feel unconditional love? Is it material things that we fall in love with: houses, cars, toys, shoes… and how they make us feel? Or is it that feeling when you give it your all? You help at the food bank, you volunteer at school, you help your community, you help someone in trouble… Is love a feeling of satisfaction? You give your time and effort and feel appreciated… Is that love? Or is it that all encompassing feeling when you know everything is right in your world, when everything is going right and everyone and everything is where they need to be? Is that love? Is it the pitter patter of little feet you hear around your house? Is it the joy of watching your children grow and succeed and knowing you helped? Is it your own success, your accomplishments, is it loving yourself?

What Is Love??

Or is it just a simple question being overthought? Is love what you make it???

When I was approached to write this month's article on love, I’m not going to lie: I panicked a bit! There are so many ways to approach this subject and love means so many different things to so many different people in so many different parts of the world and man - this is one BIG WORLD!

Unintended Consequences By Peter Tindall

My wife and I were sitting in the living room one -23°C Sunday morning and I had what I thought was a great idea. “Pat,” said I, “since it’s $@*&#% cold outside, let’s defrost the chest freezer in the basement. It’s been a couple of years and we can organize it and make more room.” I really shouldn’t have ideas.

And now the law of unintended consequences rears its ugly head. In order to fit all this stuff into the freezer in the first place, we have been shaping the unfrozen food to the shape of the space we’re sticking it into. Have you ever tried to reassemble 300 or so weirdly shaped frozen items into a 22-cubic foot rectangular block? It ain’t happening. 5 hours later, there’s less in the freezer, which is still full to the brim and still disorganized, and we have a couple of coolers worth of food out in the garage. If a chinook hits, we’re going to have to really start eating. Maybe I can lease a couple of teenagers. Not only that, in order to get rid of the saskatoons, there’s going to be some serious pie happening. I’m probably going to gain 10 pounds, plus we’ll need some ice cream. I think it’s on sale. I’m sure we can get it into the freezer.

Now is the time to book your land development and septic installation projects for spring!

We have a very large chest freezer and worse, we cannot resist a bargain. If 3 chickens are on sale, we buy 3 chickens, eat one, and 2 go into the basement freezer “for later”. Remarkably enough, we always manage to get them in there. Since there’s only 2 of us at home, we really don’t need to buy 3 chickens but what the heck, “they were cheap.” So, we pull everything out, carry it upstairs, and put it outside. As we get deeper into the freezer, the contents morph from food into archeological artifacts. Who knew we had a round roast from 2006? I think that was a good year for beef (is there ever a bad year for beef?). On the bright side, the Glenbow Museum has expressed an interest in displaying a cut of meat that didn’t cost more than my first car. We also found enough frozen Saskatoon berries to make pie for the entire Russian army. Time to stop picking them, perhaps?

PASSION… PRIDE… PURPOSE... With the holiday season behind us and the new year under way, and while historically this is the time we review our investment portfolio and get ready for tax time, it may also be a good opportunity to review your existing mortgage and see if any changes or restructuring are in order. While lowering your existing mortgage rate and payment, maybe some renovations, the purchase of a new vehicle or any number of other reasons or purposes would suggest this may be the right time to refinance your existing mortgage, perhaps the biggest reason to consider the restructuring process is to consolidate outstanding debt.

EQUITY LENDING

Keep Your Credit in Check During This Recession!

The Lowest Interest Rates,

According to a recent survey conducted by CIBC, 28% of Canadians consider paying down debt to be their top financial priority in 2017. Their biggest concerns are credit cards and lines of credit. On average, Canadians owe $1.67 in credit market debt for every dollar of disposable income. (Source: Business News Network)

· Over 15 years mortgage lending experience · Access to over 50 lenders · Including the chartered banks · 24/7 Availability · Evening and Weekend Calls Welcome · Unlimited Accessibility · A more relaxed qualifying criteria • Self Employed Applicants • Client Applications With Less Than Perfect Credit

For many Canadian homeowners, it can be overwhelming trying to pay down or pay off multiple credit lines and loan type products while balancing the other monthly household expenses. If sufficient equity exists in your home, you could benefit in a number of different ways.

GUARANTEED!!

First, you could save on interest charges and lower your monthly payment obligations by consolidating this debt with your existing mortgage. You could be saving thousands of dollars in unnecessary interest by securing a lower interest rate on your mortgage versus the high interest that most credit accounts carry. Secondly, this would allow you to or ensure that you maintain a good credit rating. Not only is paying one bill instead of multiple bills each month easier to manage, with the other credit accounts being paid off, your credit score will continue to rise, and therefore, no risk of any accounts going into default.

I WORK ON YOUR BEHALF to ensure that you receive the best interest rate possible.

PLUS, using a mortgage broker does NOT cost you any money!

Finally, become debt free faster. Since your new mortgage payment is likely smaller than the combined total of your previous monthly obligations, this will allow you the option of either saving and/or paying off your mortgage faster. It’s important to note the prepayment privileges that you have with your mortgage company as they are not all the same. You would be surprised what a difference it can make just putting a little extra each month towards your mortgage can make. These extra payments go straight towards the principal and not a penny goes to interest.

Save THOUSANDS THO USANDS in

unnecessary interest!

Cure a Tickling Throat

When you were 9, playing your armpit was a cool trick. Now, as an adult, you can still appreciate a good body-based feat, especially if it serves as a health remedy. Take that tickle in your throat: It's not worth gagging over. Here's a better way to scratch your itch: Scratch your ear. "When the nerves in the ear are stimulated, it creates a reflex in the throat that can cause a muscle spasm," says Scott Schaffer, M.D., president of an ear, nose, and throat specialty center in Gibbsboro, New Jersey. "This spasm relieves the tickle."

Experience Supersonic Hearing

If you're stuck chatting up a mumbler at a cocktail party, lean in with your right ear. It's better than your left at following the rapid rhythms of speech, according to researchers at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. If, on the other hand, you're trying to identify that song playing softly in the elevator, turn your left ear toward the sound. The left ear is better at picking up music tones.

Overcome Your Most Primal Urge

Need to pee? No bathroom nearby? Fantasize about Jessica Simpson. Thinking about sex preoccupies your brain, so you won't feel as much discomfort, says Larry Lipshultz, M.D., chief of male re-

German researchers have discovered that coughing during an injection can lessen the pain of the needle stick. According to Taras Usichenko, author of a study on the phenomenon, the trick causes a sudden, temporary rise in pressure in the chest and spinal canal, inhibiting the pain-conducting structures of the spinal cord.

Forget Sudafed. Here's an easier, quicker, and cheaper remedy to relieve sinus pressure: Alternate thrusting your tongue against the roof of your mouth, then pressing between your eyebrows with one finger. This causes the vomer bone, which runs through the nasal passages to the mouth, to rock back and forth, says Lisa DeStefano, D.O., an assistant professor at the Michigan State University college of osteopathic medicine. The motion loosens congestion; after 20 seconds, you'll feel your sinuses start to drain.

Fight Fire Without Water

Worried those wings will repeat on you tonight? Try this preventive remedy: "Sleep on your left side," says Anthony A. Starpoli, M.D., a New York City gastroenterologist and assistant professor of medicine at New York Medical College. Studies have shown that patients who sleep on their left sides are less likely to suffer from acid reflux. The esophagus and stomach connect at an angle. When you sleep on your right, the stomach is higher than the esophagus, allowing food and stomach acid to slide up your throat. When you're on your left, the stomach is lower than the esophagus, so gravity's in your favor.

Cure Your Toothache

Just rub ice on the back of your hand, on the V-shaped webbed area between your thumb and index finger. A Canadian study found that this technique reduces toothache pain by as much as 50 percent compared with using no ice. The nerve pathways at the base of that V stimulate an area of the brain that blocks pain signals from the face and hands.

Make Burns Disappear

When you accidentally singe your finger on the stove, clean the skin and apply light pressure with the finger pads of your unmarred hand. Ice will relieve your pain more quickly, Dr. DeStefano says, but since the natual method brings the burned skin back to a normal temperature, the skin is less likely to blister.

Stop the World from Spinning

One too many drinks left you dizzy? Ah, luckily there's a remedy. Put your hand on something stable. The part of your ear responsible for balance—the cupula—floats in a fluid of the same density as blood. "As alcohol dilutes blood in the cupula, the cupula becomes less dense and rises," says Dr. Schaffer. This confuses your brain. The tactile input from a stable object gives the brain a second opinion, and you feel more in balance. Because the nerves in the hand are so sensitive, this works better than the conventional foot-on-the-floor wisdom.

Unstitch Your Side

If you're like most people, when you run, you exhale as your right foot hits the ground. This puts downward pressure on your liver (which lives on your right side), which then tugs at the diaphragm and creates a side stitch, according to The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Men. The fix: Exhale as your left foot strikes the ground.

Pinching your nose and leaning back is a great way to stop a nosebleed—if you don't mind choking on your own O positive. A more civil approach: Put some cotton on your upper gums—just behind that small dent below your nose—and press against it, hard. "Most bleeds come from the front of the septum, the cartilage wall that divides the nose," says Peter Desmarais, M.D., an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Entabeni Hospital, in Durban, South Africa. "Pressing here helps stop them."

Thaw Your Brain

Too much Chipwich too fast will freeze the brains of lesser men. As for you, press your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth, covering as much as you can. "Since the nerves in the roof of your mouth get extremely cold, your body thinks your brain is freezing, too," says Abo. "In compensating, it overheats, causing an ice-cream headache." The more pressure you apply to the roof of your mouth, the faster your headache will subside.

Prevent Near-Sightedness

Poor distance vision is rarely caused by genetics, says Anne Barber, O.D., an optometrist in Tacoma, Washington. "It's usually caused by near-point stress." In other words, staring at your computer screen for too long. So flex your way to 20/20 vision. Every few hours during the day, close your eyes, tense your body, take a deep breath, and, after a few seconds, release your breath and muscles at the same time. Tightening and releasing muscles such as the biceps and glutes can trick involuntary muscles—like the eyes—into relaxing as well.

Wake the Dead

If your hand falls asleep while you're driving or sitting in an odd position, rock your head from side to side. It'll painlessly banish your pins and needles in less than a minute, says Dr. DeStefano. A tingly hand or arm is often the result of compression in the bundle of nerves in your neck; loosening your neck muscles releases the pressure. Compressed nerves lower in the body govern the feet, so don't let your sleeping dogs lie. Stand up and walk around.

langdonglass@gmail.com Breathe Underwater

If you're dying to retrieve that quarter from the bottom of the pool, take several short breaths first—essentially, hyperventilate. When you're underwater, it's not a lack of oxygen that makes you desperate for a breath; it's the buildup of carbon dioxide, which makes your blood acidic, which signals your brain that somethin' ain't right. "When you hyperventilate, the influx of oxygen lowers blood acidity," says Jonathan Armbruster, Ph.D., an associate professor of biology at Auburn University. "This tricks your brain into thinking it has more oxygen." It'll buy you up to 10 seconds.

Read Minds

Your own! "If you're giving a speech the next day, review it before falling asleep," says Candi Heimgartner, an instructor of biological sciences at the University of Idaho. Since most memory consolidation happens during sleep, anything you read right before bed is more likely to be encoded as long-term memory.

Next time you're at a party, try this trick: Have a person hold one arm straight out to the side, palm down, and instruct him to maintain this position. Then place two fingers on his wrist and push down. He'll resist. Now have him put one foot on a surface that's a half inch higher (a few magazines) and repeat. This time his arm will cave like the French. By misaligning his hips, you've offset his spine, says Rachel Cosgrove, C.S.C.S., co-owner of Results Fitness, in Santa Clarita, California. Within a few days, the brain had a terrible headache, the stomach was bloated, the legs got wobbly, the eyes got watery, and the blood was toxic. They all decided that the rectum should be the boss. The Moral of the story? Even though the others do all the work... The ________ is usually in charge!

Looking for a positive real estate experience? Choose an agent that really cares

When we are in the supermarket and someone rams our ankle with a shopping cart then apologizes for doing so, why do we say, "It's all right?"
