course of the evening’s program, so it’ll truly be an event that you won’t want to miss. Tickets aren’t available just yet for the January 23rd 2019 Gala, but keep an ear to the ground – it won’t be long now until they go on sale, and they’re sure to move quickly!

Have Your Say Above all else, the annual Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards are meant to be just that: representative of our readers! To that end, we’re happy to inform all the Newsy Neighbours out there that NOW is your chance to support your favourite local business and shine a spotlight on all the great work they’re doing by nominating them for an award. Just visit www.readerschoicebestinbusiness.com to submit a nominee (it’s a quick and easy process) and then keep an eye out to see if they end up making the short list! Be sure to get your nominees in soon, though – you’ve only got until December 5th to get those names submitted before the nomination period ends and voting begins!

The Reader’s Choice Business Awards are Back! Recognizing our Best and Brightest Businesses

It’s that time again – the Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards are back! We’re gearing up for our biggest and best Awards Gala ever this January 23rd, and with good reason – the upcoming 2018-19 show marks the exciting fourth anniversary of the Business Awards! It seems like it was only yesterday that we were scrambling to prepare for the first ever Newsy Neighbour Business Awards, all the way back in 2016. Since then, the venues have gotten bigger, the guest lists have continued to expand, and for the first time this year, we’ve partnered with the Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce for a unique segment of the program. Despite all this growth and change, though, we’ve worked hard to ensure that the spirit of the show remains just as it’s always been: focused on celebrating the towering heights of business and entrepreneurship that have been displayed throughout our communities this past year.

Always a Great Time If you haven’t had the chance to attend any of the past Best in Business Awards Galas, it can be hard to describe the feeling that’s in the air on these special evenings. The celebratory atmosphere, the radiating pride of our communities’ most driven businessowners, and the shining, entrepreneurial spirit that fills the room is almost palpable. Throw in some delicious food provided by the talented cooks at the Langdon Firehouse and some top-notch, show-stealing entertainment (to be announced – so stay tuned!), and you’ve got a recipe for a night to remember. Plus, this year, the Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce will have its own dedicated segment within the larger

After nominations come to a close, voting begins. You’ll be able to make your voice heard once again as both a Newsy Neighbour reader and a stalwart supporter of local business by casting a ballot for your very favourite shops, services, and entrepreneurs to take home an award at our Business Awards Gala event on January 23rd. Take this opportunity to stand up and recognize those hardworking, devoted pillars of our communities by logging on to www.readerschoicebestinbusiness.com and casting your vote. Many of the categories are hotly-contested, meaning your ballot could be the one to tip the scales in favour of the business of your choice, so don’t miss this chance! Voting starts on December 6th and carries through until January 6th, so mark your calendars today! Additionally, it’s important to note that for this fourth edition of the Best in Business Awards, we’ve significantly scaled back the number of awards categories recognized in an effort to increase both the relevance and prestige behind each award presented, so the competition for Gold has never been more fierce – all the more reason to be sure to participate in both the nomination and voting processes if you want to be sure your local entrepreneurial hero is recognized for his or her hard work and inspirational devotion.

An Exciting Few Months Ahead Between nominations, voting, and the actual Awards Gala itself, we’re in for an incredibly exciting couple of months to come. Hosting the annual Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards is a privilege we look forward to each and every year here at The Newsy Neighbour, and we can’t wait to celebrate our fourth anniversary at the helm of this prestigious event. We encourage every single one of our readers to take the time to nominate at least a handful of local businesses for their dedication to serving all of us here in Langdon, Chestermere, Strathmore, and the surrounding communities, and hope that you find a moment to vote for the finalists as well, when the time comes. Finally, we look forward to seeing you all at the 4th Annual Best in Business Awards Night Gala this coming January 23rd – it really is one of our favourite evenings of the year, not to mention a brilliant opportunity to spend a moment honouring the commitment to excellence that our local entrepreneurs go out of their way to showcase throughout our communities, each and every day. January 23rd might seem like it’s still ages away, but it’ll be here before we know it – we can’t wait! The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

A Note From The Team... There’s nothing quite like fall on the Prairies – and aside from winter crashing the party for a short while in the early days of October, we actually got to enjoy a fairly mild autumn this year! Even as I write this, a cool fall breeze is drifting in through the open window, carrying on it a crisp autumnal scent and the gentle sound of skittering, rustling leaves blowing around on the grass outside, underscored by the steady, distant drone of enormous machines crawling across the nearby farmlands. I don’t mean to wax poetic, but we so rarely get to experience this golden time of year that it’s hard not to. Normally, summer comes to a jarring halt as sunshine and warmth are unceremoniously shoved aside by a cold, indifferent snowstorm, not to be seen again for another five to six months – or, at least until a chinook sweeps through town! As such, we’ve been prepping November’s issue while enjoying these temperate autumnal mornings and afternoons, crunching through the leaves to chronicle and highlight everything going on within the communities that we call home. We hope that whatever the weather’s like as you’re flipping through these pages that you had the opportunity to enjoy this rare fall season as much as we did – and that if winter finally has decided to settle in for good, that you’re bundled up somewhere warm and cozy with a nice, hot drink by your side. Thank you once again for taking the time this month to catch up with your community, support your fellow neighbours and local businesses, and read this magazine. We couldn’t be more grateful for your support, and we hope you enjoy everything we’ve got in store for you this issue. See you next month! A Voicemail Greeting From A Person Who Hates Voicemails Can You Just Text, Please?? Hello, you have reached Ben Hampton's voicemail. Please do NOT leave me a message here, as I will NOT check it. I never check my voicemail. Ever. Just put whatever you were going to say into a text message, and send that to me. Text messages are efficient and good, unlike voicemails, which are inefficient and horrible and never contain even one picture of a cat. I like cats because they are incapable of leaving voicemails. Also, because they are cute. Voicemails waste time—time that should be spent thinking about how to convince everyone to stop leaving voicemails. It takes less than five seconds to read the average text message, while it takes more than 13 hours to listen to the average voicemail. I think. I confess it is difficult for me to keep up with the latest voicemail statistics, as the last time I listened to a voicemail was in 2002. It was from my friend Michael informing me that he was unable to get us opening night tickets to The Two Towers, a movie I was very excited to see because it is about a utopian society where nobody leaves each other voicemails. Michael also wanted to know what was up. I vowed then and there that I would never listen to a voicemail again, and my hatred of them has only grown in the years since. It is now boundless and all-consuming and causes me to spend the majority of my days pondering how to best rid our planet of this wretched technology. This frequently gets me into trouble at work, as solving this problem is not technically part of my job description. I am a c-train operator. I have likely cost the city of Calgary thousands of dollars by think-

ing about how much I hate voicemails instead of paying attention to whether the customers on my train had paying their tolls, but this lost revenue pales in comparison to the benefits the province and country will reap when I am finally able to free them from the voicemail industry’s oppressive shackles. Deep down, my supervisors understand this, which is why they have kept me on staff despite numerous warnings to stop stopping the train on the Bow River bridge to yell at the customers about voicemails. Also, my uncle is commissioner of the Calgary Department of Transportation. He was the commissioner, at least. I have not seen or heard from him in 17 days. No one has. He left me a voicemail 18 days ago and then vanished the next morning. I have not listened to his voicemail. I will never listen to it, no matter what my cousins and the police and the governor say. Voicemails are bad and annoying and a much worse way to communicate than text messages. He should have just texted me. Or sent me a picture of a cat holding a sign that explained what was happening to him. That would have been ideal. I miss my uncle. I miss him very much. I just do not miss him as much as I hate voicemails. So please, when you reach the end of this greeting, instead of blathering on about how you just wanted to check in or were wondering what time dinner was or recently saw my uncle at an Edmonton gas station looking scared and confused, send me the information in some type of written format, and congratulate yourself for bringing the world slightly closer to being the paradise we all know it can be, where voicemails have gone the way of smallpox, Furbies, and the majority of toll booth operators, except for the ones who have figured out how to do their jobs in a unique way that a machine could never replicate. Anyway, leave it at the beep! Please don’t, actually. I just still kind of like saying that. Eddie Small

Marijuana Toxicity in Pets Little is currently known about the safe and therapeutic uses of marijuana in companion animals and there are no legal or approved products containing Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) for pets. What we do know is that marijuana can be toxic to your pet. Even more concerning, is that the cocoa and xylitol contained in many ‘marijuana edibles’ can also be hazardous to the health of your pet. The

summary below highlights the symptoms of marijuana toxicity in your pet and safeguards we can take to reduce the risk to your pet. Why are we concerned for your pet? We have learned from research performed in Colorado state, showing a four-fold increase in veterinary emergency visits due to marijuana toxicities in pets following marijuana legalization in that state (1).

With increased accessibility to marijuana through legalization, safeguards need to be taken to limit your pet’s exposure: • Safe containment of products in sealed containers • Proper disposal of residue • Observation when walking your pet in public places for products on the ground • Avoid having a pet in a room where marijuana is being inhaled Marijuana can interact with other medications so if you plan to use any of marijuana products in your pet, be sure your veterinarian is aware that you are doing so. Scientific research is now underway for safe and therapeutic uses of marijuana in companion animals. Targeted uses include pain, inflammation, anxiety and epilepsy. In the meantime, until we know more, please consider the risk to your pet when handling marijuana and ask your veterinarian if you have further questions regarding your pets. Animal Care Centre

A pet toxicity case often involves a pet that has either inadvertently eaten marijuana in the form of a joint, discarded joint, ashes or edibles, or the dog has secondarily inhaled marijuana. In pets, clinical signs typically begin 30 to 90 minutes after ingestion or inhalation and because THC is stored in the body’s fat deposits, the effects of marijuana ingestion can last for several days.

Symptoms of ingestion of marijuana:

Incoordination, listlessness/lethargy, dilated pupils, slow heart rate, urinary incontinence, startle reaction or light/sound sensitivity, drooling, tremors, vomiting.

November 2nd was my 11th birthday. And what did I get for it? NOTHING.

Only $12 + gst, s/h

I didn’t even get a walk until after supper. Mom kept saying it’s because it was windy and snowy and freezing cold, but I don’t care for her lame excuses. I don’t ask for much in this world: just a nice, comfy couch to lay on, treats, for you to clean up my little poop nuggets that sneak out when I’m jumping up or down from said couch, for everyone to leave me alone, for you to keep Stella away from me, treats, cheese, Yampa, and WALKS!!! That’s not too much to ask for! Last year I got a big bone that said “Happy Birthday” on it. At least that’s what I was told it said… I can’t read. This year, I didn’t even get that. No trip to the local pet store, not even Yampa hugs. I mean, what’s a birthday without Yampa hugs? NOT A BIRTHDAY AT ALL!!!!

We're riders too,

so we understand what you need.

Horse Bitz

I’m 11 years old now, which means, as a senior dog, I should be treated with respect and dignity. Maybe, just maybe, dressing me up like a spider for Halloween isn’t the BEST idea for a dog who deserve the best, like me. Senior dogs have different needs than our younger brethren. Maybe I am half blind, maybe I struggle with a little form of dementia (in that I snarl and bare my teeth at my mom, dad and siblings, but NEVER at Yampa, so really I’m just fine. Maybe it’s just you.).

Human seniors demand respect, and I do as well. I mean, they’re dedicating this entire November issue to seniors. It’s not too much to ask for an issue to be dedicated to ME, is it?? A Moment of Silence Taking Time to Remember November is always a busy month. It seems like it shouldn’t be, but it somehow sneaks up on us every year. Thanksgiving and Halloween are behind us, but Christmas is on the horizon, which means that November kicks off the start of the holiday shopping season for many folks as they try to get ahead of the game. Black Friday continues to make

its way into Canadian stores and shopping malls, creating another “holiday” to plan for and work around. If you’re a student, chances are you’re spending November buried in books – wrapping up midterms, preparing for finals, and pushing to get all those end-of-semester assignments ready for submission. If you’re a parent, this month means helping your kids excel in their studies as their homework piles higher and deeper around them with each passing week. Even work seems somewhat frantic as everyone races towards the close of the year, eager to finalize projects, reports, and submissions before the fast-approaching holiday break.

As busy as November (not to mention our lives in general) can often be, it’s important to take some time this month to put on the brakes for a second, stop, and reflect on a few things – namely, the notion of remembrance. It’s an easy thing to forget and

brush off in all the chaos that everyday life brings, but here at The Newsy Neighbour, we’ll be taking some time on the eleventh

hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month to pause…

…and reflect on those brave men and women who gave so much in order that we might enjoy our beautiful nation of Canada in unfettered freedom as we do today. This Remembrance Day, as with all Remembrance Days past and future, we’ll stop what we’re doing, and for one brief moment out of the whole 365-day-long year, we’ll focus on what it means to sacrifice and to stand on guard for the True North, strong and free. We could spend time in this article talking about the brave Canadians whose heroic acts during the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the Normandy Invasion, and countless other pivotal engagements helped to turn the tide during WWI and WWII. We could write a lengthy essay lamenting the unfathomable tragedy of 104,944 Canadian lives lost in service to their country between World Wars I and II, not to mention the thousands who have died in conflicts around the globe since. We could pen an entire issue of this magazine dedicated to those who have died in the name of freedom – of Canada – in the 151 years since Confederation…but the thing is, no matter how many words we devote to the cause, it will never be enough. It’ll never even come close. And so, we pause for a moment of silence. We pause to dwell on the pain, the heartbreak, and the horror that war brings. We pause to reflect on hope, freedom, and independence. We pause to be thankful for everything we have, and for our great, wondrous nation. We pause to look back on the past, and to gaze ahead to the future. We pause to consider the political division and strife that’s running at a fever pitch right now, and to contemplate a better, more peaceful way forward. We pause to remember – because if we don’t take the time to consider the mistakes we’ve made, we’re bound to repeat them again. This Remembrance Day, take the time to remember. Wherever you are at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month – whether you’re shopping, studying, or working – pause for a moment of silence, and take the time to truly, earnestly reflect on our nation’s past, present, and future. Be grateful for all that we have, and honour those who paid the ultimate price for us to enjoy our lives, our freedoms, and our country. Remember what it means to be Canadian – we know we will. Military Remembrance Days Around the World Memorial Day in the United States. Anzac Day in Australia. Remembrance Day in Britain, Canada, South Africa, Australia and other Commonwealth countries. Many countries hold a special day

of remembrance each year to commemorate their soldiers who died in service, as well as non-service men and women who died as a result of military conflict.

Anzac Day

Australian and New Zealand

April 25th marks the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli, the first major military action of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) in World War I. More than 8,000 Australian soldiers died in the Gallipoli campaign. The national Anzac Day holiday was established in 1920 as a national day of commemoration for the more than 60,000 Australians who had died during World War I, and since has expanded to include World War II, as well as all other military and peacekeeping operations in which Australia has been involved.

Armistice Day

France and Belgium

November 11th is a national holiday in both Belgium and France, held to commemorate the end of World War One hostilities “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” in 1918. In France, each municipality places a wreath its War Memorial to remember those who died in service, most including blue cornflowers as a flower of remembrance. The country also observes two minutes of silence at 11:00 a.m. local time; the first minute dedicated to the nearly 20 million people who lost their life during WWI, and the second minute for the loved ones they left behind. A large memorial service is also held northwest of Flanders, Belgium, where hundreds of thousands of American, English and Canadian soldiers lost their lives in the trenches of ‘Flanders Fields.’

Dodenherdenking

Dutch Remembrance of the Dead

Dodenherdenking, held annually each May 4th in the Netherlands, commemorates all civilians and members of the armed forces of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who have died in wars or peacekeeping Source:https://www.thoughtco.com/military-remembrance-days-around-the-world-4048265

Canadians recognize Remembrance Day, originally called Armistice Day, every 11 November at 11 a.m. It marks the end of hostilities during the First World War and an opportunity to recall all those who have served in the nation's defense. Here are some quotes to help you pause and remember...

"In war, there are no unwounded soldiers."- Jose Narosky "The dead soldier's silence sings our national anthem." - Aaron Kilbourn "But the freedom that they fought for, and the country grand they wrought for, is their monument today, and for aye." - Thomas Dunn English "And they who for their country die shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the soldier's tomb, and beauty weeps the brave." - Joseph Drake "Patriotism is not dying for one's country, it is living for one's country. And for humanity. Perhaps that is not as romantic, but it's better." - Agnes Macphail "I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, or free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind." - John Diefenbaker "Whether we live together in confidence and cohesion; with more faith and pride in ourselves and less self-doubt and hesitation; strong in the conviction that the destiny of Canada is to unite, not divide; sharing in cooperation, not in separation or in conflict; respecting our past and welcoming our future." - Lester Pearson "Canadian nationalism is a subtle, easily misunderstood but powerful reality, expressed in a way that is not state-directed—something like a beer commercial or the death of a significant Canadian figure." - Lester Pearson "We only need to look at what we are really doing in the world and at home and we'll know what it is to be Canadian." - Adrienne Clarkson

OLD AGE IS A GIFT I HAVE DECIDED I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometimes despair over my body - the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror, but I don't agonize over those things for long. I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, and my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so avant-garde on my patio. I am entitled to overeat, to be messy, to be extravagant. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging. Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 am, and sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love... I will. I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the bikini set. They, too, will get old! I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten, and I eventually remember the important things. Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when a beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect. I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so

You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong. So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. Living with Fibromyalgia Fibromyalgia is a chronic and painful condition that is extremely hard to diagnose. The main symptoms are constant pain and stiffness in the musculoskeletal parts of the body, soft tissue tenderness and sleep disturbances leading to extreme tiredness. The pain is mostly felt in the neck, back, pelvic girdle and hands, though any other parts of the body may be affected. This disease is very hard to diagnose because so many of the symptoms are similar to other problems like chronic fatigue, rheumatism and arthritis. Doctors must rely a great deal on their patients’ description of symptoms. There is a manual standardized test that can be given to discover if there is pain at specified points of the body. If 11 out of 18 of these specified points are tender, and the patient has had pain in all four quadrants of the body for at least three months, then Fibromyalgia is certainly suspected. A compounding problem is that these symptoms can come and go from week to week. Numbness, tingling and burning may also be present and the pain can be affected by emotional stress, trauma and also by weather conditions, such as humidity and cold. Too little or too much activity can also play a part in the amount

Sometimes FM can be triggered by an illness or injury, but it is also thought to be genetic. New research has shown that it may be caused by an interpretive defect of the central nervous system that causes abnormal pain perception. Once the condition has been diagnosed, there is much the patient can do to relieve the symptoms. Certainly the advice of a medical health-care provider should be sought and followed, but there are many alternative treatments that offer relief from the symptoms and most doctors agree that sufferers of FM should put into place a multi-faceted treatment regimen that includes nutrition, exercise, dietary supplements, acupuncture, aroma-therapy, relaxation techniques and even the use of hot-cold therapies and humor to aid in pain relief. Over the counter pain relief medication such as ibuprofen can be used, while low doses of anti-depressants from the doctor can cer-

tainly help the sufferer to get better sleep. Lidocaine injections into tender pain points may also be needed for relief. Gentle exercise and stretching will prevent the muscles from wasting away and is also beneficial in reducing pain and stiffness Because living with a chronic illness such as FM can be so debilitating, sufferers need emotional support as well as physical. Joining an FM support group can provide helpful insights into the disease, while counseling sessions with a trained professional can open communication with friends and family who often cannot understand the extensive disabilities caused by FM. If you are an FM sufferer, it is important to keep a hopeful attitude even in the face of debilitating pain, because this disease does tend to improve over time and there are always new and different treatments being discovered. 3 “Must Do”

Steps to A Happier & Healthier Day Losing weight and maintaining the weight loss for an extended period of time requires some simple lifestyle adjustments. As long as you keep your adjustments within a sustainable reach, you should be able to lose weight and keep it off without much shock and interruption to your daily life. Not surprisingly, losing weight does not have to require extended trips to the gym or engagement in some fad diet. Here are three steps to a healthier day that can help you slim down on weight without slimming down on your free time.

Exercise Daily

Daily exercise can make a difference in your body shape and in the way your body processes calories. When you exercise, you work your heart, mind and body. Make sure you sweat at least once a day! You are building your muscle mass, which in turn will increase the effectiveness of your metabolism. Additionally, you encourage your heart to pump blood throughout your body more effectively, which means that you will have healthier blood and a reduced risk of heart disease. You reduce fatty deposits, which in turn helps reduce your risk of many health problems, such as diabetes. You also increase the number of endorphins that flow through your body, which means that you will note an increase in your positive attitude. It does not require a large amount of time exercising to receive all of the above benefit. You simply need to workout regularly for a minimum of half an hour. Working out means taking a twomile walk at a fast pace, throwing a Frisbee or riding a bicycle.

West of shoppers and beside ATB Whatever the workout is, keep in mind that it should elevate your heart above it standing heart rate and it should make you breathe slightly heavier than normal. It is also good if you can break a sweat or feel your muscles challenged.

Eat All Things in Moderation

When you are trying to lose weight or sustain lost weight, it is vital that you allow yourself to eat all foods, but eat the unhealthy ones in moderation. The primary reason for many diets to fail is that people reduce the foods that they allow themselves to eat so drastically that they feel anxious after awhile eating the same things time and time again. When you allow yourself to give into simple cravings, you are rewarding your body and making it less tempted to crave larger portions of the bad foods. You should also eat small portions of every food, regardless of its nutritional content. Eating smaller portions will help your stomach adjust to consuming less food. You can also drink water to help you feel full. American’s especially have a habit of eating more than one portion of food per meal – so be aware of your food portions!

Call a Buddy

Studies prove that having a buddy help you work out and staying motivated increases your chances of maintaining a diet, exercise routine, or long-term weight loss. Buddies are fabulous motivators. They will keep you attuned to your habits and help you feel accountable throughout the day. If you must, enlist the help of a partner to be an appointed weight loss guardian. He or she will be tasked with ensuring that you stick to your weight loss goals by encouraging you to report your progress several times a week. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

"The Social Killer" Scared to go out to a meeting to speak to a client? Need to deliver a speech but feel like fainting at the thought of going in front of the class to present? Scared to attend a social gathering for no apparent reason? You might be suffering from social anxiety disorder. Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is a kind of mental disorder where the sufferer experiences a severe or unreasonable fear of social gatherings where there is a possibility that one may get embarrassed or ridiculed. Most of the time, these anxieties arise from an intense fear of being closely

watched or scrutinized - from the simple things like the way they dress, talk or act; to important job functions like performing in front of a crowd, giving a presentation, or finishing an interview for a job application. This kind of phobia gives sufferers a feeling of being trapped or shut away from the world. They say social anxiety disorder is closely related to shyness. However social phobia differs in the sense that this disrupts normal socializing functions. It is true that everyone goes through a stage of shyness in their life, overcoming it is a different thing. When it becomes too much that it interrupts your daily life and relationships to the point where you are sick with worry, it is time to seek counsel. It is good to know the signs and symptoms of social anxiety disorder to be able to determine and treat this said condition before it worsens. People with social phobia manifest 2 basic kinds of symptoms: emotional and physical. The emotional symptoms include: an intense fear of being in situations in which you don't know people, fear of situations in which you may be judged, worrying about embarrassing or humiliating yourself, fear that others will notice

that you look anxious, anxiety that disrupts your daily routine, work, school or other activities, avoiding doing things or speaking to people out of fear of embarrassment, avoiding situations where you might be the center of attention. The physical symptoms include: Blushing, profuse sweating, trembling or shaking, nausea, stomach upset, difficulty talking, shaky voice, muscle tension, confusion, palpitations, diarrhea, cold and clammy hands, and difficulty making eye contact. Basically, this phobia manifests a symptom of being overly anxious around other people. Sufferers think that other people are more confident that they are, that other people are better them. They feel uncomfortable being around people that it makes it difficult for them to eat, drink, work, asking questions, asking for dates, even going to the toilet, when other people are around. The good news is that there is a cure for this condition. For the past 20 years, a combination of talk therapy and medications has proven most helpful to limit the effects, if not cure, this mental condition. Certain anti-depressants (Paroxetine, Sertraline and Venlafaxine), anti-anxiety medications, and beta blockers are used to help Socio-phobic people to balance certain chemicals in the brain and minimize panic attacks during periods of heightened anxiety. Talk therapy teaches people with social anxiety disorder to react differently to situations that trigger their anxiety. The therapist helps the patient confront the negative feelings about social situations and the fear about being judged by others. Patients learn how their thinking patterns add to the symptoms of social anxiety disorder and how to change their thinking so the symptoms begin to lessen. To be shy is quite normal, everybody has gone through a similar phase. Getting past that stage is the difficult part. Ultimately, it ends up to building your confidence to a certain level for you to be comfortable enough to move normally. In case you’ve been diagnosed as a socio-phobic, it is nothing to be ashamed of. With a little bit of therapy, proper medication, and enough support from people who believe in you, you’ll slowly be able to do socialize and function normally within a group without being too anxious.

ratory illness and contribute to low and premature birth weight – and the underlying influence is systemic inflammation caused by high levels of oral bateria. Can Dental Cleanings Help Reduce Inflammation? What happens to oral tissues and systemic tissues when there is a build-up of plaque and oral bacteria? Bacteria are always present in the mouth, helping to keep a healthy pH balance. But when bacterial levels become imbalanced, there is a significant increase in the release of toxins that cause gum tissue to become irritated and inflamed. Progression of inflammation includes bone and ligaments that support teeth – making them susceptible to premature tooth loss. How Does Removing Oral Plaque Keep You Healthy? Bacteria that lives in plaque doesn’t just remain in the mouth – but enters the blood stream via cuts in the gum and travels around the body – causing inflammation in all systemic tissues including organs. Controlling levels of plaque in the mouth can have a direct benefit on the health of your heart and body as a whole – while preventing dental decay, gingivitis, bad breath and stained teeth.

At the office, take a walk to see your coworkers gives you energy and a positive outlook. So, here instead of always using email. Face-to-face conversation is often are a few tips to get you thinking about staying better anyway, as it avoids misunderstandings and leads to better active all year long! bonding and teamwork. Find exercise videos you love, and carve out a space indoors with the equipment you need. I exercise in my basement all year long, and add outdoor activities when weather permits. The great thing about having an exercise video collection, and the right space, is that you have absolutely no excuses! If you don’t have room in your home for a home gym, get a portable DVD player and bring it to your gym! You can use their equipment and still watch your video! The new fall television lineup will be here soon. Use TV commercial breaks! Many people ignore strength training because they feel cardio burns more calories. But adding muscle to your body will raise your metabolism, allowing you to burn more calories all day long. Resistance training also strengthens your bones, and just getting stronger can help you with a multitude of daily activities. So, find a book, magazine article, wall chart or other resource showing exercises to work all major muscle groups, and do a set of repetitions during each commercial. You’ll get a 20-minute workout during one 60-minute show! Join a walking club at a local school, or walk inside a shopping mall. You can window-shop before the stores open so you go right to the store that has the best sales or the styles you love when they are open. Park farther away from the door and walk. At work, at the grocery store, at the mall; any place where you’re stuck walking outside anyway, just bundle up and get a few extra steps. When indoors, take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. You’ll burn lots more calories. You can even try using restrooms, copy machines, etc. on a different floor just to get more exercise. Consider wearing a pedometer and challenging yourself to keep increasing your steps per day. Use your lunch break if you work in an office. If your company has a gym, use it. Walk outside when the weather permits. If it’s raining or snowing, walk laps around the parking garage or laps around each floor perimeter plus the steps between floors. Be less efficient! If you live in a multi-story house, take as many

Consider winter sports. Skiing (downhill or cross-country), ice skating, and snow-shoeing can all burn lots of calories. Also, just play in the snow! Go sledding or build a snowman, and make some snow angels! And make sure you check out your local gyms! They often have evening and weekend classes to help you stay fit. And don’t forget, after a stressful day at the office, yoga is a great way to decompress and help you sleep without the stresses of the day fluttering through your head. I hope these tips help you to stay active this winter! Remember, the key to weight loss is to burn more calories than you consume (and weight maintenance is balancing the intake and the burn equally over time.) If you don’t burn calories with exercise, you’ll need to cut your food intake, and that will be especially difficult during the holidays. I personally would rather exercise more and enjoy a few holiday cookies! So get in the habit of exercising consistently now! Dale Reynolds

THE CHRONICLES OF LARRY AND ROGER: A Pair of Diabetic Feet Written by: Vicki L Myhre CPOD (I) CMP PFRP. Enlightened Soles. Internationally Certified Podologist. Registered through the Canadian Examining. Board of Health Practitioners

Hello!! HAPPY NOVEMBER! November brings many exciting things for most of us. Larry here. Roger and I are still on the 10,000 steps/day program. How about you? Were you able to find some indoor walking venues that suit your needs? The new SMP Sports Centre is beginning to take final form, and it comes with a great walking track! There’s also daily walking at the Strathmore Civic Centre for those of us who don’t like to walk outside in the cold. We are still hearing that this is going to be a long, cold winter; I would think the skiers and other snow sport peeps are pretty excited about this. Us, on the other hand, we look forward to indoor walking and the social aspect that that brings for us and our friends. It is all good! November is also Diabetes Awareness Month! “T1D Looks Like Me” is an online movement showcasing that Diabetes affects people of all shapes, sizes, ages and sexes where you post a photo of yourself with the hashtag #T1DLooksLikeMe on your social media throughout the month of November. It is a simple, powerful, interactive away to highlight how Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) affects millions of people around the world. Enlightened Soles/Vicki Myhre is donating $5 for each pedicure/ foot care session done in November in support of Diabetes Awareness. You can do your part by booking your Wellness Footcare Session today!

Pumpkin “Spice” I don’t know if I have written about this before, but if I have it is well worth repeating. We have a problem, Canada. Every fall, although it seems to be coming earlier and earlier each year, hardworking Canadians are spending horrific amounts of money on an addiction that has quickly spread from coast to coast to coast.

From Tofino to Toronto, Tickle Cove to Tuktoyaktuk – it is everywhere! Five years ago, the only ones impacted by this addiction seemed to be yoga-pant wearing, Starbucks sipping, double x chromosome twenty-somethings. However, this insidious addiction quickly spread outside the borders of colleges and universities and has found its way to every hockey rink, curling rink, Wal-Mart, PTA meeting and home in the True North Strong and Free. But we aren’t free. Oh no, my fellow Canadians, we are being held captive by our nation’s addiction to pumpkin “spice”. What started with an innocent enough latte quickly became a gateway for more and more and more use. Reddit streams began to pop up offering advice on where to get the best price per gram. Pinterest became the go-to place for recipes on making edibles. Everywhere Canadian’s gather, from the rink to the local Timmie’s, it’s there. My son, my sweet son, who should have known to just say no! had a wrapper in his room. When I went to put his clothes away – there it was, right on his desk. He didn’t even try to hide it. It was just there – the wrapper of a “spiced” pumpkin pie Cliff Bar. When his dad and I set him down to talk about it, he didn’t even try to deny it was his. The worst part – his coach gave it to him. Apparently all the kids on the team “do it” after a hard game. Corporate Canada has seen this addiction for the cash cow it is. Lindor has developed a pumpkin “spice” truffle, the wholesome tastes of nuts and honey now comes in pumpkin “spice” Cheerios. From beer to bread, to pop tarts and brownies, everything is infused with pumpkin “spice.” How bad has it gotten? Three words – pumpkin “spice” condoms. I wish I was kidding. I’m not. The family pets aren’t even safe. My dogs can now clean their teeth with pumpkin “spice”

Dr. Ashkan Hamzehi DDS; Dr. Sharif Faizi DDS; Dr. Arzy Kafrouny DDS Greenies and my cat, oh heaven help us, my cat can now crap in Tidy Cats scoopable multi-cat pumpkin “spiced” litter. There needs to be some sort of safeguards in place. I mean “spiced” Skittles, M&M’s, Peeps and Little Debbie “spiced” rolls. You can’t tell me that this isn’t targeting kids. Are you willing to risk it? It might just take one Hershey’s Pumpkin Spice “Kiss” and bam before you know it, your child will be sneaking bites of “spiced” Oreos in class while their teacher sips, oblivious to what your child is doing, a triple venti, half sweet, non-fat, no foam pumpkin “spiced” latte with caramel drizzle. I guess I should be thankful, I mean after all, it was a power bar wrapper and not a condom wrapper in our kid’s room, but I worry about what is next. Pumpkin spiced pie?

Pumpkin Recipes Pumpkin Soup

Tomato paste and Parmesan cheese are the secret ingredients of this luscious pumpkin soup. They add an extra element of sweet and savory that tastes delicious with velvety pumpkin.

1 Tbsp (15 mL) butter 1 medium onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 pound pumpkin, peeled, seeded, cut into 1-inch cubes 3 Cups (710 mL) chicken stock 1 Tbsp (15 mL) tomato paste 1 Tbsp (15 mL) grated parmesan cheese ¼ tsp (1.25 mL) salt ¼ tsp (1.25 mL) pepper Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and garlic and cook until translucent, 3 to 4 minutes, stirring. Add pumpkin and cook 3 minutes, until lightly softened. Add stock and paste and stir to mix. Add cheese, salt, and pepper; mix and serve warm.

Pumpkin Chili

Chili can be made in endless ways, but the best chilies are rich, chunky, spicy, and just a tad sweet. This recipe is all those things, plus a little more. Pumpkin makes for an unexpectedly creamy chili base, which creates an especially delicious dish. Perfect served with cornbread and sautéed greens.

What’s Your Mantra?

“My mantra is: Let there be happiness in my soul, and let me share it with the world.” ~Alexandra Stoddard Oxford Dictionaries defines a Mantra as ‘a statement or slogan repeated frequently.’ When many people think of a Mantra, meditating comes to mind. Mantras are used extensively in meditation to assist with quieting one’s mind. Silently repeating a word such as love, joy or the popular ‘ohm’ can help to slow down the steady stream of thoughts that we all have, and thus allowing peace, calm or clarity to settle in. There is also another powerful way to use Mantras and that is to motivate or inspire you to be your best self. Often referred to a personal mantra, it could be a big-picture phrase or statement that reflects how you want to live your life or it could be a focused mantra that you use in specific circumstances. For example, one of my personal mantras is, “Serve self through service to others” and this guides me in the decisions I make, how I show up for family and friends, and the way I work with clients. There are also mantras that people call upon when they need extra courage, strength, conviction or faith. One of my favorite children’s books is The Little Engine That Could. How many of you remember this fairy tale about optimism and hard work? For those of you who are unfamiliar with the story, let me share a quick overview. There is a long train whose engine stops at the bottom of a large mountain and it must be pulled over by another engine. Several large engines in the station yard are asked if they would pull the train but one by one, each of the large engines gives an excuse as to why they cannot do the job. The only one left to ask is the small little engine whose job it is to move a few cars at a time. The little engine agrees to do his best and he hooks up to the train and begins to chant his mantra, “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can…” as he slowly begins to move the large train. “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can…” he continues to chant as he pulls the train up and over the mountain. On the way down, his mantra changes to, “I thought I could. I thought I could. I thought I could.” We all have times when we are faced with situations we do not believe we can get through, tasks we do not believe we can

A Statement Or Slogan Repeated Frequently complete and challenges we do not believe we can resolve. Using a personal Mantra during these times can turn our disbelief into faith and our fears into determination. Mantras can help us override our limiting beliefs long enough to create new empowering beliefs, and they can give us the motivation we need to keep moving. Through the life stories told at Women Talk in Strathmore, we are reminded that each of us is capable of so much than we think when we approach life like the Little Engine That Could and we leave the excuses behind. There is a message in each experience shared that gifts us with a Mantra to embrace. Consider the woman who was traumatized at an early age and spent years as an adult living in constant fear. She has learned to, “Embrace the Journey”. The woman who felt disconnected from life itself until she realized how important is was to “Honour HER Within.” The woman who encouraged us to feel the fear and, “Do it Anyway!” The millennial woman who determined that allowing the judgement of others to get in our way only keeps us small, so to always remind ourselves, “I am enough.” And let’s not forget the empowered woman who seeks to empower others. She reminded us that, as strong women, we have the ability to make a difference in the world and can, “Lead with kindness and grace.” Join us at Women Talk where you may find a powerful Mantra for your life waiting to be discovered in the stories that are shared. Women Talk Strathmore is on the third Thursday of the month at The Station. A Message from Martin Shields... Each year, from November 5 to 11, Canadians from coast to coast to coast mark Veterans’ Week. On November 11th, Canadians across the country gather together to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies. This year’s Remembrance Day marks the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the First World War. We know the final days of that conflict as “Canada’s Hundred Days,” a stretch of significant Canadian victories that helped end the war. In three months, the Canadian Corps advanced roughly 130 kilometres and took some 32,000 prisoners. By the conclusion of Canada’s Hundred Days, 30 Canadians and Newfoundlanders had earned the Victoria Cross. During these last hundred days, Canadians rarely suffered less than 100 casualties a day. In total, the First World War cost approximately 61,000 brave young Canadians their lives, and 172,000 were wounded. We must never forget the sacrifices of First World War Veterans, and of all Canadian Veterans. Whether during war or peacetime, Canadian soldiers have always stood ready to defend freedom, democracy and justice. Many have paid the ultimate price. Canadian cemeteries on many a foreign field are an eternal reminder of the risks they take and of the immense gratitude we owe them. This Veterans’ Week and Remembrance Day, let us reflect on our freedoms and renew our determination to never forget the legacy and tremendous sacrifices of Canada’s Veterans. Lest we forget. I can be reached in Ottawa at martin. shields@parl.gc.ca. Strathmore Fire & Friends Movember Team Monday, November 19th 2018 marks the second annual Strathmore Fire & Friends Movember Fundraiser. In follow-up to last year’s sold out “Sign and Wine” night, this year’s event will be in a new location, allowing us to include more people in this truly beneficial evening. As most are aware, the Movember Foundation is a leading charity aimed at changing the face of men’s health: “…We’re addressing some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. We know what works for men, and how to find and fund the most innovative research to have both a global and local impact. We continuously challenge the status quo, and invest quickly in what works. In 15 years, we’ve funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects around the world. By 2030, we’ll reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%.” - http://ca.movember.com/about/foundation Our team is pleased to announce that Humpty’s Strathmore will be our venue this year. All are invited to join us for a fun filled evening, featuring a silent auction, door prizes and your custom created sign project lead by our friends from Necias Notables. Food and beverages will be available for purchase and the price per ticket this year is $45.00. Tickets are available for all ages, however anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a ticket holding adult and the event is recommended for those 13 and above. To purchase your ticket, you can visit our Facebook event via the team link (@movemberStrathmore) or by calling one of our event hosts at 403-901-86843 Tickets will be available until November 14th, 2018 or until sold out. The Strathmore Fire & Friends Movember team is a small but courageous group of individuals invested in sharing the heartfelt message of the Movember Foundation. Putting their money where their ‘stache is each year, they come together to celebrate the mighty face monument and raise funds for Men’s health. Founded within the membership of the Strathmore Fire Department, this team has a long-standing connection to our community and our cause. Ryan Parkins The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

A German Shepherd, a Doberman and a cat all died. All three are faced with God, who wants to know what they believe in. The German Shepherd says, “I believe in discipline, training, and loyalty to my master.” “Good,” says God. “You may sit on my right side.” The Doberman responds, “I believe in love, care and protection of my master.” “Ahh,” says God. “You may sit to my left.” Then, He looks at the cat, and asks, “And what do you believe in?” The cat answers, “I believe you’re sitting in my seat.”

MOTORIZED WINDOW SHADES Imagine a world where your window treatments adjust themselves automatically, creating the perfect room ambiance morning, noon and night. That’s the beauty of Motorization. Just program your window treatments to the exact position you want and then control and schedule them using an App. You can also operate your shades with a remote control, or with voice commands using devices such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home. Using the App, you can control your shades with a swipe of a finger. Or, create customized scenes that move your shades to positions you set. Then you can automate those scenes to operate on their own throughout the day. Use the Automations feature to set your scenes to operate independently, whether you are at home or away. You can even schedule scenes to operate with the sunrise or sunset based on your location. Remote controls now offer a modern alternative to a traditional remote control, allowing you to preset and easily operate up to six different groupings of window treatments—individually or together—with just a press of a button. Along with the added convenience of cordless operation, motorization creates a safer environment for homes with young children and pets. Old Time Cooking Tips and Hints

These old-fashioned cooking tips and hints are taken from a number of vintage publications, including "Buckeye Cookery and Practical Housekeeping," "The Perry Home Cook Book," "The White House Cook Book," and "Young's Demonstrative Translation of Scientific Secrets."

Slicing Pineapples

The knife used for peeling a pineapple should not be used for slicing it, as the rind contains an acid that is apt to cause a swollen mouth and sore lips. The Cubans use salt as an antidote for the ill effects of the peel.

To Scald Milk

Put in top of double boiler, having water boiling in under part. Cover, and let stand on top of range until milk around edge of double boiler has a bead-like appearance.

To Prevent Milk Curdling

A pinch of soda stirred into milk that is to be boiled will prevent curdling.

Using Bread Crumbs for Pastry

This old cooking tip makes a tasty dessert. Many puddings that are commonly baked in a crust, such as coconut, potato, apple, and lemon, are equally as good and more wholesome, made by strewing grated bread crumbs over a buttered pie plate or pudding dish to the usual depth of crust; pour in the pudding filling, strew another layer of bread crumbs over the top, and bake.

When Baking Pies, Cakes, Cookies, Etc.

A bowl containing two quarts of water, set in an oven when baking, will prevent pies, cakes, cookies, etc., from being scorched.

Cake Icing Tip

A pinch of soda in your icing will keep it moist and prevent its cracking on the cake.

To Peel Oranges

This old-time cooking tip can be used with a microwave oven, but only heat for a few seconds. Heat oranges a few minutes in oven before peeling, then the white inner skin will come off with the rind.

To Make Tough Meat Tender For a few minutes, lay it in a strong vinegar water.

When Squeezing Lemons

Heat lemons well before squeezing and there will be double the quantity of juice.

When Baking Fruit Pies

To keep juice from running out of fruit pies, insert a small cornucopia of white note paper into the center of the pie so that it is about twice the height of the pie.

To Separate Eggs

When separating eggs, if you drop a portion of egg yolk into the whites, moisten a cloth with cold water, touch to the yolk, and it will adhere to it.

high school to be built in Langdon. As you know, we have been asking about this since my election in 2015, and though Langdon is prioritized as number one by Rocky View Schools and is on the Government’s “unfunded” list, we have not been able to get any clear answers as to why this critical build has been overlooked and less critical builds have gone forward. Surely the Government is not playing politics with our children’s education? Please make sure you are writing to me, to the government and to your school and municipal leaders to have your voice heard. According to the Government’s own rosy forecast, we will have a $54 billion debt by next year and the government should be transparent and honest about what they can or cannot fund. The families in Langdon deserve at the very least honesty as to where they fit into the picture. We have to know where we are in order to know where we are going, and understanding where our finite dollars are being spent is an integral piece of the puzzle to understand how to adapt to the circumstances of the day. We will continue to try and get the answers you seek even if the answers are not what we want to hear. I would like to point out an interesting article done by Erica Alini with Global news ( https://globalnews.ca/news/3434447/overhalf-of-canadians-are-200-or-less-away-from-not-being-ableto-pay-bills/ ) She speaks about how “more that half of Canadians are living within $200/month of not being able to pay their bills” and many more are not able to make their payments at all. The question we need to ask ourselves is, “Do we know how the interest rates affect our debt repayments?” As you may have heard, the Bank of Canada has just raised interest rates. Also, they are suggesting that more hikes are on the way in the near future. A 1% rise in the interest rate is a 33% increase in a variable mortgage rate if it goes from 3-4% as is the example used in the article. On a $400,000 mortgage, that is close to an extra $4000 dollars per year. We have to be ready for these increases, and many of us are not. Please read this article. It is well written and provides some tools for understanding these complexities that create great anxiety, and sometimes seem out of our grasp. One person that should have seen this coming is the Alberta Finance Minister ( https:// globalnews.ca/news/3593541/interest-rate-hike-not-good-foralberta-right-now-ceci/ ). He is about to learn that taking on massive amounts of debt means interest rate hikes will cost the Government a lot more in interest. Of course, he doesn’t have to live with the extra costs and reduced services this will result in; you do. One in four kids attend Catholic School and school choice is a pillar of our education system here in Alberta. Many things may need fixing in our education system, but choice is not one of those issues. The separate school system in Alberta is protected by the Constitution and it would require a Constitutional Amendment to remove that right. These rights were guaranteed in section 93 of our country’s founding documents, which transferred into the Alberta Act of 1905 when the province of Alberta was created. I will fight any move to restrict your right to choose how your child is educated: public, Catholic, private, faith based or home schooling, it’s your right to choose. Perhaps those who want to fight this battle could instead spend their energy asking the Federal Government to get our pipelines built. We are currently losing about $100 million a day as I write this. That’s a lot of schools, hospitals, and roads. So, let’s talk about academic standards, and I know this is a touchy subject. We have seen that class marks do not match with marks on standardized tests, and this discrepancy is growing. Is it that we just want everyone to be happy, and so we just don’t celebrate academic achievement anymore? What would happen if we stopped having band concerts, and the opportunity to play a solo because you worked hard no longer exists so that others do not feel bad? Should everyone make it onto the football team or the badminton team? No, there are tryouts and there is an expectation to practice and to win. We celebrate artists, and drama through shows, and lead roles in plays, and we celebrate incredible musicians who practice hard and deserve these accolades, but why are we not pushing for academic excellence where we can? We support kids with cognitive and physical disabilities by learning their strengths and applying education in the way that suits complex needs and elevate the child and their accomplishments. But that doesn’t mean abandoning standards. The Government calls this desire to make everyone happy “Championing Kids”, which seems to translate in their minds to: “Just pass them”. Championing kids certainly should mean working with kids where they are at and as classrooms become more complex, and grow in size, what do we do to support our teachers that deal with all that, plus all of the emotional, and parental expectations that are put on them? How do we work together as communities to raise well-rounded kids who care about their academics and what that means in the real world to them and the path they choose as they grow into adults? Let’s look at the curric-

It’s not about having necessarily the best marks in any particular subject, we all have our strengths and weaknesses, but feeling the desire to try and have the best marks you can have…personal bests, in whatever capacity that is, but first we must lead by example and inspire those who are in our care. Our teachers foster that inspiration, and we thank you for all you do for our kids. This is about recognizing reality, working hard, teaching to lead, and pushing our children to do their best in all matters and all subjects, from compassion to calculus, athletics to algebra. That is how we champion our children. As always, we love to hear from you.

We all know THAT person, every time you talk to them they go on and on about themselves, rarely asking how you are doing, not much for back and forth conversation. Well that is how a lot of businesses are with their Facebook page. It is a one-sided feed of pushing products or services usually resulting in complaints that Facebook doesn’t work for them. Albertans like Facebook and are active on it. With the proper attention and regular posts, whether you are a home-based business or brick and mortar, it can work for you. First, there are two questions to ask so you can shape your Facebook narrative: What are your expectations for your business page? Who is your target customer/client? Next, businesses forget just how much of Facebook works out to be free advertising. So, with this in mind, make sure your page is set-up properly. The ABOUT, BUSINESS INFO, CONTACT INFO, BUSINESS HOURS should be current and accurate. The STORY area needs to be interesting and well thought out. Is your profile image properly formatted? Is the cover photo well designed and easily viewed in all formats? Especially for smartphones, which is where most people will interact with your page. Now it is time to fill your business page with engaging content that isn’t all about you. January 2018, Facebook announced major changes to its newsfeed algorithm. With this change, they now give priority to connections and engagement. Your posts won't be seen unless there is dialogue; you also need to be following compatible or complementary businesses and sharing their posts. Facebook also emphasizes the importance of posting on a regular basis. Share tips, resources and information related to your business. Respond to comments and questions. If you're having conversations with your followers, they are likely to become customers.

Set up Facebook Messenger; it is a great customer service tool. Messaging is convenient and many people are more comfortable with live chatting than calling. Finally, be creative through ads, videos, events, contests and giveaways. You will have to outlay some money here but ideally, these campaigns are included in the marketing budget. At this point, you are now ‘selling’ to an audience who knows you, they are familiar with your company culture, have benefitted from your tips, smiled at a few harmless jokes in your feed, seen photos of you and your staff and are now much more comfortable about doing business with you. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Junior Achievement celebrates Financial Literacy Month

Financial Literacy Month is an opportunity for Canadians to participate in many of the financial literacy activities and events throughout our communities. Programs, services and tools are made available to help Canadians improve their knowledge, skills and confidence in making informed financial choices for themselves.

November is Financial Literacy Month. During the month of November, Junior Achievement’s Southeast Prairie Region, along with our regional volunteers from Chinook Financial, Community Futures Wild Rose, Co-operators Insurance, RBC, REPs Group, Swagar's Insurance, & TD Bank will be participating in Financial Literacy month by bringing JA’s popular financial based programs to students at the schools in your community. A Business of our Own, Our Business World, Dollars with Sense, Economics for Success and Investment Strategies provide increased knowledge and awareness of personal financial literacy skills for students from grade 5 – 10. The largest delivery of the year will take place at Crowther Memorial Junior High in Strathmore, AB on November 14th, 2018 with all grade 7 classes participating in the popular Dollars with Sense program. Dollars with Sense encourages students to develop the financial literacy knowledge necessary to make informed decisions about their financial future. “Participating in Junior Achievement programs at an early age really provides students with an amazing opportunity to get them thinking and planning about their own financial futures. They learn about goal setting and seizing opportunities to help them achieve their personal and professional aspirations. Aligning some of our program deliveries with Financial Literacy Month is a great opportunity to create further awareness of financial literacy with our youth.” Says Lindsay Pollon, JA’s Regional Program Coordinator. Lindsay added, “JA’s programs are delivered by volunteers in the community who share similar values in ensuring our youth are financially educated. We will reach over 500 students in November in the region. We have 21 JA programs registered with schools in Chestermere, Strathmore, and Beiseker.” Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta is a non-profit organization providing programs to students in grades 5–12 to educate and enhance their skills in business, financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship. What to Do When Your Home Isn't Selling When you sell your home, the process is almost like going to a job interview. Selling a home involves presentation, which is one of the key factors that determine the outcome. Although this may sound a bit weird, presentation is a way of life in the world of real estate. Buyers in today’s market look for good presentation – many basing their final decisions on it. If the property you are selling comes with a garage, you’ll need to go through your garage before you sell your home. Chances are that you store things in your garage that can easily pile up over time before you realize it. If your garage is in a messy condition, you’ll obviously want to clean it up. Buyers look for homes that are in perfect condition, and anything less than perfect will look bad in the eyes of the buyer.

Most homes have some truly outstanding features inside of them. You should always do your best to highlight the best features of your home, instead of just hoping that the buyer understands what they are. The ideal way to bring out the best features of your home is to use proper lighting. If your home is clean, you can use lighting to bring out the best features in your home, and ensure that they stand out to the buyer. When a potential buyer first pulls up to your home; the first thing he will see is your lawn. If your lawn is trimmed and well taken care of, he will get a good impression right off the bat. If your lawn is a wreck, your potential buyer may immediately pull away. To give the best impression to the buyer, you should put some thought into how things look. You can always plant flowers around the walkway and throughout the yard, which will look great to a potential buyer. You should also make sure that the entrance into your home is a positive as well. The front door should be in great shape, as well as the entry area into the home. You can add some plants, paintings, and rugs to ensure that your buyer gets a good impression. When the buyer walks through the entry way into your home, you should make sure that the view he or she takes in is a good on. Your biggest goal when showing your home is to ensure that the buyer is pleased. Keep in mind that it may take some time to sell your home. These days, homes can sit on the market for months at a time before they actually sell. If you are having trouble selling your home, you can always reduce the price or simply go back to the basics. Eventually you will sell your home – although it may take more time than you think.
