Exchange these Solar Eclipse Glasses! If you were at the Solar Eclipse Program at the Independence Public Library with David Voigts on August 7, you probably received some solar eclipse glasses. According to Library Director Laura Blaker, “We cannot guarantee those glasses are safe, even though they were advertised to be so and have all the right safety codes and certifications on them. Please come to the library and exchange them for glasses that we know are approved, certified, and verified.” The glasses that the library is now giving out are safe according to NASA and American Astronomical Society (AAS) standards. They are yellow, red, blue, and green and not pre-folded. “We don't want anyone to damage their eyes. If you know of somebody who was at the presentation, please let them know about exchanging their glasses.” The library has a limited number of safe solar eclipse glasses to give away, up to four per person while supplies last. These are ISO 12312-2 compliant and CE certified to safely protect eyes.

A major buzz term heard by many recently has been “opioid epidemic. Misused, overused, over-prescribed, over-dosed results have led to increased need, dependency and even death. Researchers recently released data from a 2015 survey that showed 37% of American adults (91.8 million) were prescribed opioid pain medication. Of that number, 11.5 million misused the medication while 1.9 million had a use disorder. Those numbers are startling, especially when the research has found that improvement from opioid medications is limited. Consistently, particularly with long-duration pain, exercise therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) have been found to be the most beneficial. The use of prescribed opioids also opens the door for the significant increase in heroin use, as it is in the same medication “family. Helping yourself, a friend, family member, or someone else you know that suffers from an addiction can be a life saver, not only from the potential fatality that can be involved with opioid medication, but also with allowing them to get their lives back. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released guidelines on prescribing opioids with recommendations to utilize movement activities, CBT and weight loss, along with other alternatives to have greater results versus medication. Learning where to start from an exercise therapy standpoint, particularly when a person is dealing with pain, is where physical therapy can help. If improving function and pain is desired, talk to your physician about physical therapy. A great resource on the above information and to learn more, visit: www.MoveForwardPT.com/ChoosePT
