Add family meetings to weekly routine Submitted by Buchanan Co. ISU Extension

During August, families begin to think about “back to schoolâ€? routines. Cindy Thompson, an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach human sciences specialist, suggests making family meetings a routine all year long. Weekly family meetings can help busy families keep communication lines open, said Thompson, who specializes in family life issues. “As children get older, their schedules get more complicated. They juggle school, sports, afterschool activities and sometimes a part time job. Both children and parents beneďŹ t from family meetings where they can review all their schedules and reect on their school or work successes,â€? Thompson said. Schedule the family meeting at a time when all family members are available and not tired or otherwise distracted. Keep the meeting brief and begin with family compliments or praise for each and every member of the family. Celebrating family successes is important for building continued self-conďŹ dence, Thompson said. The family meeting also is a place to learn problem solving skills. According to Thompson, problem solving is a protective factor that can be an asset in school or work settings. Listening, taking turns talking and sharing, and hearing other family members’ opinions are additional beneďŹ ts of planned family meetings. “If your family members seem to be arguing or having trouble following household rules, your family meeting can be a time to review the rules and talk about how you all can hold each other accountable for complying,â€? Thompson said. Delegating household chores is an ongoing need for keeping a clean home, the extension specialist said. “During a family meeting, divide household chores among family members. Make a job chart so your children know they will have an opportunity to switch duties from time to time,â€? Thompson said. Family meetings also are a time to plan for fun, Thompson continued. “Spend some time discussing everyone’s ideas for spending quality time together. Take turns letting each person select an activity. If a suggested activity has a ďŹ nancial cost, discuss the family budget and make a group decision based on your family ďŹ nances,â€? Thompson said. “Use the month of August to schedule your weekly family meetings and begin this new school year with success and open communication.â€?

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey commented on the Iowa Crops and Weather report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistical Service. The report is released weekly from April through October. “We continue to see crops in good condition across the state, with 83 percent of corn and 82 percent soybeans rated in good or excellent condition,â€? Northey said. Frequent but scattered precipitation throughout the week allowed Iowa farmers 5.1 days suitable for ďŹ eldwork for the week ending August 7, 2016, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Activities for the week included cutting hay and fungicide and insecticide applications. Topsoil moisture levels rated 1 percent very short, 11 percent short, 83 percent adequate and 5 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 2 percent very short, 10 percent short, 83 percent adequate and 5 percent surplus. South central and southeast Iowa reported the lowest levels of subsoil moisture with over one-quarter short to very short. Ninety-eight percent of the corn crop reached the silking stage, 11 days ahead of normal. Sixty-one percent reached the dough stage, 5 days ahead of last year and 9 days ahead of the 5-year average. Seven percent of Iowa’s corn crop reached the dent stage. Corn condition rated 83 percent good to excellent. Soybeans blooming reached 94 percent, 6 days ahead of the previous year. Seventy-nine percent of soybeans were setting pods, one week ahead of normal. Soybean condition rated 82 percent good to excellent. Ninety percent of the oat crop for grain or seed has been harvested. The second cutting of alfalfa hay reached 97 percent, more than 2 weeks ahead of last year and 9 days ahead of normal. The third cutting of alfalfa hay was 42 percent complete, 6 days ahead of average. Hay condition rated 73 percent good to excellent, while pasture condition rated 62 percent good to excellent. Frequent rains have been good for pastures, but made it diďŹƒcult to cut and bale hay. Livestock were reported to be in good condition with very little stress.

USDA announces safety net assistance for milk producers due to tightening dairy margins

August 11, 2016 PAGE 9

Watch for signs of medical identity theft

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced approximately $11.2 million in financial assistance to dairy producers enrolled in the 2016 Margin Protection Program for Dairy (MPPDairy). The payment rate for May/June 2016 will be the largest since the program began in 2014. The narrowing margin between milk prices and the cost of feed triggered the payments, as provided for by the 2014 Farm Bill. “We understand the nation’s dairy producers are experiencing challenges due to market conditions,” said Vilsack. “Dairy operations enrolled in the 2016 MPP-Dairy program will receive approximately $11.2 million this month. I want to urge dairy producers to use this opportunity to evaluate their enrollment options for 2017, as the enrollment period is currently scheduled to end Sept. 30, 2016. By supporting a strong farm safety net, expanding credit options and growing domestic and foreign markets, USDA is committed to helping America’s dairy operations remain successful.” Dairy producers who enrolled at the $6 through $8 margin trigger coverage level will receive payments. MPP-Dairy payments are triggered when the national average margin (the difference between the price of milk and the cost of feed) falls below a level of coverage selected by the dairy producer, ranging from $4 to $8, for a specified consecutive two-month period. State specific payment amounts can be found at www.fsa.usda.gov/dairy

Health care is the number one target, nearly as much as retail, finance, and banking combined, for identity theft and fraud. Your health information is important to you and your health care provider. But in the wrong hands, it can be valuable to someone else. Would you know if someone stole your medical identity? Identity theft affects millions of people year. The Federal Trade Commission offers several steps to take to make sure health care information remains secure. First, read medical and insurance statements regularly and completely. They can show warning signs of identity theft. Look for services not received or providers not seen. This is like seeing charges on a credit card statement that were not yours. Next, read the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statement or Medicare Summary Notice that a health plan sends after each treatment. Again, check the name of the provider, the date of service, and the service provided. Do the claims paid match the care received? If a mistake is found, contact the health plan and report the problem. Also, watch for bills if you know part of the care received was not covered. If a bill doesn’t show up when expected, look into it.
