Welcome To The New Art Gallery Walsall Designed by Caruso St John architects The New Art Gallery Walsall opened in February 2000 in the heart of Walsall town centre. Our renowned Garman Ryan Collection was gifted to the Borough in 1973 by Kathleen Garman, widow of the great 20th century sculptor Jacob Epstein. Kathleen was originally from nearby Wednesbury, and although she had spent much of her life in London, wanted to give something back to the Black Country where she had grown up. The Collection includes 365 important works by celebrated artists including Epstein, Van Gogh, Monet, Constable, Picasso, Degas, Matisse and Lucian Freud, alongside a wide range of artworks from across the world. Our Permanent Collection, formed in 1892, has over 3000 works, from Victorian genre paintings to contemporary installations. The changing exhibition programmes focus on the very best in international contemporary art and our Artists’ Studio and Artist Development programmes support artists from across the region. Our education and events programme provides a broad cultural experience for everyone.

CONTEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS

Elizabeth Magill Headland 17 October 2018 — 20 January 2019 Elizabeth Magill is one of her generation’s leading painters and this exhibition will present a body of new work. “A kind of concentrated ambiguity regarding the natural world…" characterises Magill’s paintings. Throughout her career Magill has been drawn to the language of painting using nature and landscape. She draws from them a gorgeous and engrossing multiplicity of visual and sensory 'description”, Declan Long.

Although predominately living and working in London, Magill’s work is redolent of place - and in particular, drawing from her early beginnings in the North of Ireland. Her approach to image making is always experimental, allowing for previous attempts to give way to newer ones to form an unfolding openness.

Preview: Tuesday 16 October, 6-8pm. All welcome.

In Conversation: Thursday 17 January, 6.30-8pm. Join the artist for a talk about her work. £3. Please book on 01922 654400.

Magill explains that “although my work refers to landscape it is more like an exterior view, an attempt to create a setting or space to place things a kind of deposit of thoughts and observations within the framework of a personal and painting practice."

Daniel Silver, Lilia, 2016, Marble, Plaster Scrim, Mannequin. Photo Stephen White. Courtesy the artist and Frith Street Gallery, London

Daniel Silver Opens 8 February 2019 This major solo exhibition by acclaimed contemporary sculptor Daniel Silver celebrates the Gallery's longstanding commitment to sculpture, and making links between historic and contemporary art, in the 60th anniversary year of Jacob Epstein's death. Silver is pushing the boundaries of sculpture in new and innovative ways, though clearly acknowledging the legacy of art history, and citing Epstein and Modernist sculpture, as well as classical art, amongst his influences. Preview: Thursday 7 February, 6-8pm. All welcome.

This presentation coincides with the Rodin Spotlight Tour from the British Museum in our Collections Galleries and will be Silver’s largest exhibition in a UK public gallery to date. Existing works such as Rock Formations, monumental sculptures collaging stone and bronze heads onto large sections of Carrara marble, will be displayed, alongside new works including a series of works using manipulated shop mannequins which draw out links between the classical and contemporary depictions of the human body.

EXHIBITIONS

Grace A Williams Intermission Until 11 November 2018 Intermission is a new two-screen projection focused on the gaze of two unknown men whose enigmatic portraits appear on nineteenth century photographic slides found by the artist. Hand tinting the images, Grace A Williams references the pivotal role that women played as colourists and ‘ink and paint girls’ in early commercial photography studios and animated film. A new limited edition print accompanies this exhibition, priced £75.

In Conversation Saturday 22 September, 2pm Join the artist for an introduction to her work with curator, Zoë Lippett.

Sarah Taylor Silverwood, Studio test, 2018. Courtesy of the artist.

Sarah Taylor Silverwood Daphne 19 January — 12 May 2019 Sarah Taylor Silverwood uses drawing and language as material to produce publications, animation and installation works. Daphne considers the relationship between women and language, taking the ancient Greek myth of Daphne and Apollo as a focus. This early story, which traces Apollo’s pursuit of Daphne and her transformation into a laurel tree, has been retold over centuries in many different art forms.

Through hand-drawn animation, objects and drawing, Taylor Silverwood interprets key motifs within the story and considers how we consume these narratives. In doing so, she highlights the ways in which early stories permeate contemporary popular culture and wider social narratives around women’s experiences. Through the work, Taylor Silverwood also draws attention to the form of animation itself, as a practice that exists between drawing and moving image and a record of the maker’s hand.

A full programme of events accompanies this exhibition this Spring. See website for advance details thenewartgallerywalsall.org.uk

Sculpture in Focus

Rodin: rethinking the fragment

From January 2019

Opens 2 February 2019

To coincide with the 60th anniversary year of Epstein's death, in 2019 we are celebrating sculpture in all forms throughout our Collections programme. The Sculpture in Focus trail will position a key piece of contemporary sculpture from our Permanent Collection within each of our ten themed rooms, featuring diverse artists including Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Henry Moore, Bob and Roberta Smith and Marcus Taylor, continuing our tradition of making links between historic and contemporary art.

Linked to the 2018 British Museum exhibition Rodin and the art of ancient Greece, this Spotlight tour from the British Museum brings key national works to three regional galleries across the UK, including The Thinker, from the Burrell Collection, Glasgow. This exhibition introduces Rodin's relationship with classical sculpture, demonstrating the inspiration he found visiting the British Museum and viewing the Parthenon friezes, and his adoption of the fragment as a central component of his oeuvre.

Lily Wales, Solway Sister, 2018, photomontage, Courtesy the artist

ARTISTS’ STUDIO

Lily Wales Blue Streak 17 September — 9 December 2018 Working with photomontage, Birmingham-based artist Lily Wales creates 2D and sculptural works that reference the language of military weaponry. During her residency, Lily will explore the history of ‘Blue Streak’, a ballistic missile developed in Britain in the late 1950s. The key that formed part of the firing mechanism was manufactured locally by Century Locks in Willenhall. Due to spiralling costs and political opposition the Blue Streak programme was cancelled in 1960 and the missile was re-appropriated to launch satellites as part of Europe’s bid to enter the Space Race. It was during this time that Blue Streak caught the public’s imagination when a photograph taken at the missile test site in Woomera, South Australia, captured a mysterious figure that has become known as the ‘Solway Spaceman’. Inspired by these incarnations of the Blue Streak missile, Lily will produce new work utilising photomontage, sculpture, coding and melted aluminium. Collage Party! Saturday 3 November, 2-4pm, free, drop-in Get creative in the studio with the artist making your own photomontages. Everyone welcome.

Mahtab Hussain, Mitti Ka Ghar. Photo: Jonathan Shaw. Courtesy of the artist.

EXHIBITIONS

Mahtab Hussain Mitti Ka Ghar Until 24 March 2019 In September 2016, Mahtab Hussain travelled to Kashmir; to the place where his parents had once called home. He was able to meet members of his family for the first time, including his great grandmother, and to witness the kind of life he may have lived, had history taken a different turn. Born and raised in Glasgow in the 1980s, Mahtab Hussain, like many others, experienced racism and discrimination. He was frequently made to feel like he did not belong in Britain yet he knew no other home. Inspired by traditional Kashmiri mud houses that can still be found in parts of the region, the artist is working with local communities to construct, furnish and decorate a house within the gallery and to explore ideas of home. Over the coming months, visitors can watch the house develop. For opportunities to participate, please visit our website.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated publication Going Back Home to Where I Came From, published by Ikon Gallery and supported by the British Council. It includes texts by Jonathan Watkins, Frank UekĂśtter, Josiah McNeil and Mahtab Hussain. It is available in the Gallery Shop for ÂŁ20
