BUILDING BETTER COACHES

Pender High School coaches are nationally recognized for earning Level 3 Status through the NFHS Learning Center.

Through a wealth of continuing education and training, the coaches at Pender High School in Burgaw have earned national recognition for their dedication to their students and athletes. Pender High School in Burgaw is the seventh high school in the nation and the third in North Carolina to earn Level 3 status in the School Honor Roll program initiated by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). Jones Senior High School in Trenton and Rocky Mount High School in Rocky Mount are the other North Carolina schools to earn Level 3 status.

Right on time for spring, his Grow Your Own Food Academy stems from his farming knowledge and horticulture degree from NC State but was inspired by his own experiences with online learning. “I had taken online courses and saw how valuable it was,” he says. “It’s a powerful learning environment, more powerful than a classroom. You can watch the videos over and over and there are supplemental materials.”

Here’s a look at some teens who love living in a coastal community. Surf City is a day trip for some beach lovers and a summer destination for others, but it’s home to this group of island teens who love surfing and the laid-back vibe. John Utt, Preston Walker, Will and Anna Bigham, and sisters Caroline and Aubrey Solomon can’t imagine living anywhere else.
