Outstanding adventure holidays for the whole family

Welcome With the desire for family travel growing, so does our portfolio of destinations and family holidays. We now offer over 100 small group and tailor-made holidays around the world. I remember the first time I slid down a zipline. I was in Costa Rica, I was 44 and my nine year old daughters were screaming with hysterics as I emerged from a canopy of trees and ‘landed’ on the platform. Hearing them and seeing the thrill on their faces in disbelief that I too could do what they had just done will always be a strong memory. Experiences like this firmly instils my belief that travelling overseas 'en famille' enriches family life. We're committed to offering your family the opportunities to travel and share authentic and enriching experiences together. Grandparents are also wanting in on the action, with multi-generational family holidays increasing in popularity as they want to join their own children and family to share incredible adventures. In this brochure we're thrilled to reveal exciting new trips to Thailand, Ecuador and Morocco. We also include a special feature on a client trip to Egypt and our expert team share an insight to our holidays in Croatia, Thailand and Costa Rica. There's no doubt that the driving force behind families wishing to travel with us is the importance they also place on family values: to learn together, explore and discover together, to be amazed together and to laugh together (even if it does involve a zipline!). We look forward to welcoming you on your next family adventure. Nick Joynes, Director

Spotlight on Active Croatia

The Hodgson Family: Active Croatia, August 2023

With a wide choice of activities to suit all abilities, ages and adventure levels, Croatia makes an ideal short-haul family holiday destination. We posed some questions about our most popular trip, Active Croatia, to Families Worldwide Director, Nick Joynes ...

Q Why is Active Croatia our most popular trip?

Not only is the trip very well priced, Croatia is only a two and a half hours flight from various regional UK airports. It’s a popular destination with great weather, stunning Dalmatian coastline and warm, crystal-clear Adriatic Sea. The itinerary includes fun activities such as white-water rafting, ziplining, canyoning, canoeing, snorkelling and a speedboat cruise, but there’s also time to explore on your own. And we often have several families on the same trip, meaning that it’s a great opportunity for children and parents to make new friends!

Q Why did you base the trip in this area of Croatia?

Only 45 minutes from Split airport, Omiš town is the ‘adventure centre’ of Croatia’s coast. All of our activities operate in close proximity to the town, which has a great choice of eateries as well as a selection of beaches. With so much on the doorstep, it's a perfect base and you’re ideally located to add an extension to other parts of the country at the end of the trip.

Q What’s the accommodation like?

We use self-catering apartments, which are fully equipped for families. They’re functional but comfortable and vary in size: some accommodate eight or nine people, while others take a family of three or four, or even fewer (one parent plus one child). Some are in Omiš Old Town or just outside, while others are close to the beaches and have sea views. Self-catering offers independence, you can choose when to get up, have breakfast, enjoy evening drinks and make packed lunches. It’s the best style of accommodation for this trip, and is more flexible and costeffective than using hotels.

Q What kind of family is this trip suitable for?

Any family that enjoys activity, though most of the activities are designed for children from eight years upwards (but we appreciate not everyone may want to do all the activities). It makes no sense to book this trip if you're looking for a fly and flop beach holiday – this is about enjoying the local area and some active family excursions.

8

Q What are the options to extend the trip - where would you recommend? There are several options:

Dalmatian Island-hopping

We took a catamaran ferry from Split to Brač, and spent four nights in the town of Bol. Staying on an island was a great way to extend our trip, and showed us just how easy island-hopping can be.

Split

We arrived early and spent two nights in Split, which has an amazing Roman citadel, nice beaches, and some excellent hotels. Exploring the city squares and going for evening strolls to the late-opening shops provided my daughters some much desired retail therapy.

Dubrovnik

If you’re keen to explore further afield, head south to Dubrovnik - around two hours drive away. It’s a beautiful city and perfect for anyone who enjoys history and culture. You can fly from there back to the UK.

Montenegro

If you want to go even further, you could cross into Montenegro and explore the coastline, which makes a fabulous two-week holiday.

Q When is the best time to travel?

We offer a quick week away over the May half-term when the area is less busy, but the summer holidays are the most popular. May is a bit cooler; July and August are warmer, so rafting and canyoning are a bit more comfortable.

Q When should families book?

This is our most popular trip, so the spaces tend to book up early. The earlier you book, the better the availability of accommodation choices – especially if you want to extend for a few days. Typically, flights are cheapest when airlines release their schedules so we’d recommend booking as early as possible.

With both Caribbean and Pacific coasts, nearly 30% of this small, safe and peaceful country consists of national parks and wildlife reserves covering many different ecosystems. There’s a big focus on ecotourism, and any trip is a mix of city, beach, volcanoes, rainforest and jungle, with colourful tropical birds, monkeys prancing through the trees, prehistoric-looking crocodiles on the riverbanks, and the children’s favourite - the slow-moving sloth aka Flash from Zootopia! Getting to Tortuguero National Park is a fantastic adventure in itself. After exploring the capital’s museums, and surrounding volcanoes and coffee estates, we set off through the stunning cloud forest of Braulio Carrillo National Park and coastal banana plantations to a boat that took us along waterways to one of several family-friendly jungle lodges. These are simple but clean and comfortable with mesh-covered windows, and cooled by the evening air rather than air-conditioning. Boat trips and kayak tours take you to spot wildlife, and you can enjoy guided trail walks at night. And from June until October you can also see turtles! A two-week holiday can include many other amazing places to spot wildlife. Our favourites include La Fortuna, the gateway to Arenal Volcano National Park, Monteverde with its cloud forests, the Guanacaste region with Rincon de la Vieja National Park, and the ever-popular Manuel Antonio National Park, where beach meets rainforest.

No visit to Arenal is complete without a rainforest canopy adventure. After being woken by howler monkeys, ziplining offers a thrilling new natural perspective, as does the slower-paced - but just as much fun - trip to the hanging bridges. Cycling tours are a great way to explore, and there are beginner and intermediate level trails. A relaxing soak in the hot pools makes a great finish to the day - particularly with a cocktail in hand! At Rincon de la Vieja National Park you learn about the indigenous legend that gave it its name while exploring the steaming fumaroles - vents which emit volcanic gases - and bubbling mudpots; it’s a fascinating insight to volcanic power. Among the many activities here are horseriding, swimming in waterfalls, ziplining, bathing in natural hot springs and river tubing. From there, it’s only a couple of hours to the Pacific coast. We like Playa Hermosa in Guanacaste for its beautiful relaxed beach away from the crowds. Another great alternative further down the coast is Tamarindo, which is a good option for older teenagers as the town is more developed and it’s a great spot for surfing. There are so many great places in Costa Rica that it’s impossible to mention them all!

What else? We headed to Sarapiquí, where you can choose from white-water rafting on the river, or a gentler floating or tubing experience for younger visitors. You can also explore by hiking through the rainforest, and discovering how chocolate is made - a taste test is a must!

Thailand - ‘The Land of Smiles’

Thailand is one of the best destinations for a great family holiday. Families Worldwide team member Sam Buck uses his experience of leading trips in South-east Asia to extol the virtues of the kingdom formerly known as Siam and shares where to visit when.

When to visit Thailand is affectionately known as the ‘Land of Smiles’ for the warm and friendly hospitality of its people. It's also a country of great diversity, with each region and each season offering visitors something new, fresh and exciting to discover. Here, at Families Worldwide, we carefully plan our trips to take place during the ideal season to ensure that each visit is as unique as possible. Northern Thailand is best visited during the winter months when the rains have gone and the countryside is at its greenest. Our trips there run from October through until February and offer great new experiences such as visiting the villages of different hilltribes, a superb cycling tour around the stunning archaeological park at the ancient capital city of Sukhothai and even making and designing your own chocolate bar in a working chocolate factory. The central regions are less impacted by the summer rains than most of the country, so our summer itineraries focus on

20

this region. Our Discover Thailand trip introduces some of the country’s wonders: from exploring Bangkok’s hidden areas and backwater canals on a traditional long-tail boat and another ancient capital, the city of Ayutthaya. We also visit the beautiful jungle areas of Kanchanaburi and the historic River Kwai before seeing some of Thailand’s unique wildlife and relaxing on the beautiful beaches of Hua Hin’s Gulf of Thailand coastline. Venturing further south is best done during the spring, so over the Easter holidays we feature a superb trip to the tropical southern reaches, where we show off the lush jungles of Khao Sok which can be explored by both boat and on land. We also take in the beach towns of Phuket and Krabi with their unique histories and enjoy wonderful coastal adventures such as snorkelling amongst the reefs of the Andaman Sea and kayaking to discover prehistoric cave paintings.

Egypt’s Seven Wonders

We were delighted to recently arrange a tailor-made holiday for Tin Box Traveller blogger, Claire Hall. Claire travelled with her family on our tailor-made trip ‘Egypt’s Seven Wonders’ and here shares her family’s experience and gives an insight on what to expect.

A family holiday in Egypt is an adventure through time. More than once during our ten day tour I had to pause and remind myself of the centuries that had passed since the first stone was cut for the iconic tombs and temples we visited. But the most mind boggling thought was how many more years had rolled by as the desert sands consumed these architectural marvels that were once the seats of power for royal dynasties that experienced more twists and turns than a Hollywood blockbuster. Most of the ancient sites that draw visitors to Egypt today including the mighty temple at Edfu, Ramses II’s iconic Abu Simbel and the wonder that's the Pyramids of Giza - were only rediscovered in the past 250 years. It’s nothing less than magic and that’s why I think Egypt is such an incredible place to visit. It feels very special to set foot in locations that were lost for centuries and still have so much to reveal. Our Families Worldwide Seven Wonders holiday began with a visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum in modern Cairo where our guide gave us a crash course in decoding hieroglyphics - the language and symbology of ancient Egypt. This set the foundations for the rest of our trip with plenty of fun and suitably gruesome details to bring the experience alive for our ten and eight-year-old girls as we later walked between the massive columns of Karnak Temple and entered the Valley of the Kings. Everywhere we went they were keen to spot the first letters of their names in the hieroglyphics or use their newly acquired knowledge of Egyptian statues to pose as dead or alive pharaohs.

Handy fact: living pharaohs were depicted stepping forward with their left foot. As for the highlight of our trip, I couldn’t pick just one alone. Our kids instantly recognised the pyramids from school projects. But I know they were more excited to see the collection of mummified crocodiles at Kom Ombo. My husband and I were blown away by the labyrinth of extraordinarily decorated tombs in Valley of the Kings and the incredible stories about Egypt’s people and rulers that our guide shared with us at each location. But it wasn’t just the sightseeing that we enjoyed. We also loved the food, and I’m not talking about dining at our hotels, as delicious as it was. Our tour included eating in authentic Egyptian restaurants away from the tourist trail and, even more unique, at a Nubian family home in Aswan. A visit to Egypt is about much more than its built history. It’s about the people - past and present. Having a full-time Egyptian guide and being able to build a relationship with him over ten days is what made this trip so special. After a full on week of seeing Egypt’s wonders we welcomed the change of pace at a family-friendly resort on the Red Sea where we were able to relax and reflect on an incredible experience. The best advice I can give anyone thinking of taking a family holiday to Egypt is ‘buckle up’. You're in for one incredible ride through 5,000 years of history from the reign of the first pharaohs to the Greco-Roman period, all while immersed in the bustle of modern Egypt. It’s an experience we'll never forget.
