Top End Birding

✓ See rare birdlife with South Australia specialist Peter Waanders ✓ Overnight on the iconic and beautiful Kangaroo Island ✓ Search for endemics such as koalas and short-beaked echidnas

✓ Discover the region’s spectacular and colourful birdlife ✓ See an incredible array of mammals, colourful insects and reptiles ✓ Cruise the Mary River Wetlands in search of saltwater crocodile

With a diversity of habitats from the dry red interior of the outback, to the wetlands, mangroves and estuaries of Coorong National Park, we visit the best birding locations South Australia has to offer. We begin in Adelaide, where we follow the Samphire Coast to the Eyre Peninsula, before visiting the Flinders Ranges and Murray River, finishing at Gluepot Reserve and Kangaroo Island.

The ‘Top End’ of the Northern Territory is a haven for birdlife and hosts some truly spectacular species such as rainbow bee-eater, Gouldian finch, and the emblematic black-necked stork, as well as numerous mammals and an incredible array of reptiles.

We can expect to see over 200 species of birds, including five species of parrot, three species of cockatoo, little penguin, blackeared miner, malleefowl, western whipbird, freckled duck, Cape Barren goose and a variety of grasswrens, eagles, rails and crakes. Aside from the rich birdlife, we will also look for endemic mammals such as short-beaked echidna, koala, three species of kangaroo, the endangered yellow-footed rock wallaby, seals, sealions and cetaceans.
