Governor Adams Oshiomhole yesterday. Uriesi said: “We deeply regret the events of Tuesday and we will like to find out how we can prevent a recurrence. “It is neither in the interest of FAAN nor the Edo State Government for the airport to be closed. “I want to assure Your Excellency that FAAN is a good corporate citizen. I am convinced that there was a misunderstanding and I want to get to the bottom of this so that it does not happen again. “If we have any obligations, we will meet them, and I hope that in the future if there are issues of misunderstanding, we will be able to talk about them quickly without inconveniencing the public. “Sir, we are here to reassure you of our desire to be good corporate citizen and partner with the government.” Oshiomhole noted that tax law is a federal law, which the state is trying to implement.
Arik, Overland resume flights to Benin Airport From Olugbenga Adanikin, Abuja
LOCAL airline operators, except for Arik and Overland, at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, yesterday restricted flight operations to the Benin airport. This followed the closure of the administrative offices of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the National Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) by the Edo State Internal Revenue Services. Overland Airline began operation to the airport at 10am. Arik delayed its flight for one hour, resuming by 2pm. Aero, Associated Aviation Plc, Medview Airline, IRS and Dana were yet to fly. He noted that FAAN didnot pay the Pay As You Earn (PAYE), which even the president and governors pay. The governor said the State Board of Internal Revenue got a court order to seal off the FAAN Manager’s office, but that the manager decided to seal off the airport to gain public sympathy. He insisted that anybody who works and lives in Edo State must pay tax. The governor said to prevent a recurrence, FAAN must comply with the law. The Chairman of the State Internal Revenue Services, Oseni Elamah, said Federal Government ministries, de-
partments and agencies owed the state over N2billion. Of the amount, he said the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) owed N680million. The balance is owed by 33 agencies. The chairman said the taxes were for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. He said there were other agencies whose records they were yet to obtain. Elamah said the agencies failed to file returns to enable the board compute the taxes. The Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) was sealed off over N2.5million unremitted tax.

school at the age of two. “Nine per cent of the teachers have proper records. Ninety-one per cent have various deficiencies in their records. One thousand, three hundred and seventy nine representing 11.5 per cent claimed to have obtained primary school certificates after they were employed. “Some got their certificates in the schools where they have been teaching for the past 15 years. Others got their certificates two years ago. “That was why we were worried when the Ministry of Education was gutted by fire.” The governor promised that no teacher would be sacked or retired and said the problem was a system failure. He promised to invite the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) for a meeting.
Dead, retired teachers collect salaries in Edo
S
HOCKING facts emerged yesterday on why the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) was dissolved and former Commissioner for Education Ekpenisi Omorotiomwan was sacked. It was discovered that dead, retired, sacked or absent teachers were still “collecting” salaries. Governor Adams Oshiomhole said this at an education summit in the state, said he discovered that the wage bill for teachers was static. He said the money for the salaries of retired teachers and those who died was not accounted for. Oshiomhole, who caused an uproar in the hall when he announced that teachers were paid higher than their counterparts in the civil service, threatened to publish the
figures. The governor said there were serious challenges in the primary education sector. He blamed the abuse of the education process on officials of SUBEB and the Ministry of Education. Oshiomhole said the reforms in the education sector unearthed many rot, including the discovery that many teachers lacked the basic educational requisites. The governor said the recent verification carried out on primary school teachers showed that some teachers completed their primary education before they were born. He said: “Many of my comrades (teachers) completed primary education at the ages of seven, eight and nine. This means they started
HE Edo State House of Assembly has prescribed death penalty for kidnappers. This followed the passage and amendment to the law to prohibit kidnapping. The bill generated arguments among lawmakers. Friday Ogieriakhi (Orhionmwon II) said the death penalty was capable of inciting kidnappers to kill their victims. This view was, however, opposed by some lawmakers who voted in favour of death penalty in the amendment, which further strengthened other sections of the law, including Section 4. Section 4 states that any person who attempts to commit kidnapping is liable upon conviction to life imprisonment. Section 5 of the amended bill, which relates to the involvement of corporate bodies and individuals aiding or abetting abduction, states that in the case of individual(s), each of them shall upon conviction be sentenced to death while in the case of corporate body, forfeiture of all assets or property to the state. Sections 7, 8 and 9 of the principal law were amended to reflect death penalty.
