‘Why ex-militant’s allowances are delayed’

E

From: Dele Anofi, Abuja

X-MILITANTS sponsored for higher education in the United Kingdom under the Presidential Amnesty Programme, have not been neglected, said yesterday. The organisation Office said that contrary to media reports, the students have not been neglected. It admitted delay in paying their allowances but explained that this was caused by the non-passage of the 2014 national budget early. The head, Media and Communications of the agency, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, said that of the 653 students spread across 60 institutions in the UK, only about 150 of them were yet to get their intraining allowance at the time of media report. He said: “It is a known fact that the National Budget for 2014 was only passed by the two chambers of the National Assembly about 48 hours ago. This had resulted in some funding challenges for the programme and its beneficiaries; a situation that was communicated through an advertorial. “Regardless of this daunting challenge, the PAP Chairman and Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Kingsley Kuku, made effort to secure some funds, which enabled it commence payment of the stipends and allowances of the beneficiaries while the National Assembly was still considering the budget. “The delay in payment of the stipends and allowances of the beneficiaries and delegates did not affect only those in the UK. There are also delegates in 16 other countries whose in-training allowances were also delayed. “The process appears slow because of the large number and the fact that the banks handling it have to bid for foreign exchange before the remittances can be made to their individual bank accounts. But we have gone very far and that of the UK is almost done.”
