a message from leadership

Driving the evolution of musical theatre. That’s our vision.

To find ways to bring the ineffable magic that happens when a story and a song both hit exactly the right note, at the right time, for the right audience. This season, we challenged what we knew musical theatre to be, we took leaps toward an exciting new future, and we broke ground locally and nationally. To say “it’s been quite a year” would be an understatement, but to say it was unprecedented would be false.

This year, our mainstage productions bucked the status quo of musical theatre. A STRANGE LOOP made its raucous, unapologetic Canadian premiere, showcasing an unflinching look at the Black, queer experience.

AFTER THE RAIN played with conventional musical structures by handing the story to a rock and roll band to let the concerts tell us everything that went unsaid for women facing moments of profound change at different phases of life. Thoughtful, honest stories, each with a voice unique and revolutionary to its predecessors.

This is why we do it - To bring you these stories that others won’t; to make space for artists to play, explore, grow and create; to shepherd and champion new Canadian musicals onto stages worldwide. Because Canadian artists have stories that deserve to be heard and stories that need to be told.

Thank you to our Board of Directors, our incredible team who pours so much joy and love into the work that they do every day, the donors and supporters who take a leap of faith with us every time we invest in the unknown, and to the artists who trust us with their work. We do not take that lightly.

As we enter a new phase and a bold new chapter with Michael Rubinoff at the helm, we reflect on a year that brought us so much long-awaited joy and so many wins along the way. Thank you for joining us- it’s been quite a ride.

a message from our chair

This marks my last year as Board Chair and I’m amazed when I look back and realize what we’ve accomplished since I joined almost ten years ago. We’ve seen huge organizational changes and the theatre landscape is nearly unrecognizable to what it was when I started. I have always admired Musical Stage’s ability to evolve and reinvent itself anew; to stay current and respond to what its community needs while simultaneously forging a new path for Canadian musical theatre and the artists who make it.

This past year, we broke ground with a Canadian premiere and historic partnership for A STRANGE LOOP, and we redefined musical theatre with a show that’s propulsive and exciting, leaving a lasting impact. I’m consistently inspired by the artists that we work with and the community we’ve built.

Thank you to our community who so steadfastly and generously shows up for us. The donors, sponsors, patrons and long-time fans- you make our work not only possible, but endlessly rewarding. And thank you to the artists who believe in our ability to support them and, in turn, provide us with the most exciting work happening in Canadian musical theatre.

I’d like to express my gratitude to the individuals who have served and those who are currently serving on the Board of Directors. This extraordinary group of volunteers offer up tireless energy and inspiration and I’m grateful for and proud of what we’ve accomplished together.

As we move into a new era under the Artistic leadership of Michael Rubinoff, I can only imagine the huge strides and artistic leaps we’re about to make.

It’s truly exciting to imagine the next bold reinvention that awaits.

For today, though, I invite you to reflect on what was a truly unforgettable year– on stage and off.

Warm regards,

Our 2024/25 season came with an iconic rock UnCovered concert series at Koerner Hall, the Canadian Premiere of a Tony and Pulitzer prize winning musical, and the world premiere of a beloved new work that has been years in the making across our development streams.

UNCOVERED:

U2 & THE ROLLING STONES productions

Pushing boundaries and bringing heartfelt, exhilerating and epic works to stages across Toronto, The Musical Stage Company continues to show up as one of the leading institutions at the forefront of the Canadian musical theatre movement.

Our 18th annual UNCOVERED concert returned last October with Kevin Wong in his second year as creative visionary, spotlighting the music of two of the most iconic rock bands in music history, U2 & The Rolling Stones.

For four nights, Koerner Hall was transformed with the beautiful, rebellious, and soulful rearrangements of these two incredible songbooks, created and performed by Canadian legends.

A STRANGE LOOP

It took 4 companies to produce this larger-than-life show: The Musical Stage Company, Soulpepper Theatre, Crow’s Theatre and TO Live.

Created by Michael R. Jackson, A STRANGE LOOP’s main character Usher dreams of having a full-time career as a successful playwright. As he navigates the challenges of society’s expectations, internalized racism, body image issues, self-doubt, and the complexities of his own thoughts and family expectations (played by a hilarious chorus), Usher confronts the “strange loop” of his existence all the while

In October 2022, Ray (Hogg), Kate (Supleve) and I went to see A STRANGE LOOP on Broadway. We talked about it for three hours over late-night burgers and knew it needed to come to Toronto but didn’t know how. We had different programming lined up, but couldn’t let go of the dream. Exactly one year later, Kate and I were at a talk about the need to present daring, bold art. Afterwards, I looked at Kate and said ‘We have to do A STRANGE LOOP’ - I had been chasing the rights for a year at that point.”

trying to write the very musical the audience is watching. The Globe and Mail’s Critic’s Pick, A STRANGE LOOP was dubbed ‘Truly remarkable’ (My Gay Toronto), ‘F*cking awesome’ (NEXT Magazine), and ‘an expansively resonant and entertaining experience’ (Intermission Magazine).

Among the many rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, the joy and affirmation felt onstage and off was what made this enormous endeavor the fulfilling experience that keeps us determined to bring more big, bold, and beautiful productions to the Toronto stage.

AFTER THE RAIN

Her parents are famous. Her boyfriend is stupid. And Suzie is a mess.

Bookwriter Rose Napoli and Composer/Lyricist

Suzy Wilde first met through our Noteworthy program years ago, and we were thrilled to see this new genre-defying musical take to the stage in a co-production with Tarragon Theatre after multiple stages of workshopping and development.

Based around the Canadian-famous family band Evans Stone, the heart of AFTER THE RAIN is Suzie and her journey to discover her own artistic voice. Critics and audiences fell in love with this real, raw and resonant show and we couldn’t have asked for a more exciting world premiere.

new work in development

The Musical Stage Company is one of the only organizations in Canada committed to developing new musicals, with multiple initiatives designed to support the growth of Canadian writers, composers, and bookwriters.

The 2024/25 season was full of wonderful workshops from multiple development streams:

The Post-Premiere Development Program

is our commitment to the continued growth of artists and their new musicals after their world premiere. In its inaugural year, we supported the continued refining and evolution of the critically acclaimed KELLY V. KELLY.

The Aubrey & Marla Dan Fund for New Musicals

is Canada’s first-ever fund dedicated exclusively to the commissioning of new Canadian musical works. The fund offers financial and dramaturgical support to creators in creating and developing a first draft of a new musical.

This year we produced workshops for Dan Fund Commisions SOFT MAGICAL TOFU BOY(S), AFTER THE RAIN, JOHANNES, and CYGNUS.

The Recommender Grants for Theatre Creators

is a body of funding for new musical theatre development allocated through the Ontario Arts Council.

after the rain

Book & Lyrics by Rose

Music & Lyrics by Suzy Wilde

When she accepts a mature piano student obsessed with mastering only one song, Erik Satie’s “Gymnopedie No. 1”, struggling songwriter Suzie’s life takes an unforeseen turn. Full of family turmoil, life’s complexities, and centred around a devastating discovery, AFTER THE RAIN is a musical based on a true story about the healing power of music.

AFTER THE RAIN received 3 weeklong workshops (September, February, & March) leading up to its world premiere in our coproduction with Tarragon Theatre.

chew

CHEW is a wild, heartfelt new musical about chasing your passion—even when the world tells you it’s ridiculous.

Set in the eccentric world of competitive eating, it follows Sarah, a disillusioned 30-year-old playwright, who gives up on theatre just as a viral rant unexpectedly launches her into a strange new world of food athletes, fringe fame, and radical sincerity.

CHEW received a workshop in partnership with Crow’s Theatre, concluding in a public presentation.

cygnus

Book by Steven Gallagher Music & Lyrics by Anton Lipovetsky

On August 14th, 2003, Toronto was sent into chaos when the largest blackout in Canadian history left millions stranded in the dark and unable to reach or connect with their loved ones.

Set amidst the chaos and opportunity for strangers to band together and find the light in this once-in-a-generation event, CYGNUS is a story of hope, resilience, and community.

CYGNUS received a week-long workshop, including an invited presentation.

johannes

by

Music & Lyrics by Ryan deSouza & Darryn deSouza

The story follows the early life of Brahms from his teenage years playing in a Hamburg brothel, to his rise to fame with the help of friend and mentor, Robert Schumann, and more importantly the friendship he develops with Schumann’s wife Clara while the older composer is going mad. The musical is an expression of Brahms’ deep inner life and his complex relationships not only with friends and family but with himself and a dark and secret past.

JOHANNES received a week-long workshop, including an invited presentation.

kelly v. kelly

by

Music & Lyrics by Britta Johnson

Inspired by true events from 1915 in New York, KELLY v. KELLY reveals the story of a mother and daughter divided by passion, money and what it means to be a woman at a time of huge societal change.

When a 19-year-old heiress becomes tangled in an affair with a seductive tango dancer, her distraught mother has her arrested and charged with incorrigibility, sparking a court case that scandalizes the nation.

KELLY V. KELLY received a weeklong post-premiere workshop, including an invited presentation.

soft magical tofu boy(s)

Book, Music & Lyrics by Kevin Wong

Three brothers have a magical ability: to conjure images and sounds into the air. But what good is that in a hard, unmagical world?

SOFT MAGICAL TOFU BOY(S) is a colorful journey through a queer Asian fantasia brimming with pop divas, anime princesses, disapproving ancestral spirits and more.

SOFT MAGICAL TOFU BOY(S) received a week-long workshop, including an invited presentation.

one song glory marquee ensemble

Our flagship youth education program One Song Glory engaged 40 teens aged 13-18 in a free four week in-person training intensive culminating in an exciting showcase.

With the average age at 15-16 years old, the vast majority of participants identified as belonging to a minority group:

9% of participants identify as Indigenous

14% of participants identify as having a disability

18% of participants identify as trans, nonbinary, or gender-fluid

A significant majority (77%) of participants in the 2025 iteration of One Song Glory indicated they would be less likely to participate if there was a cost to the program. Financial concerns are a clear access barrier for this demographic, and our commitment to maintaining a fully subsidized program is justified by this data.

Participants identified their strengths and weaknesses before the program start, and used this self-reflection to set goals for themselves within the program. We were extremely pleased to see clear growth not only in artistic skills (including singing, dancing, acting, an understanding of the preparatory work for different roles including stage management, acting, producing, and marketing) but also in broadly transferable skills (including time management, collaborative teamwork, problem solving, leadership, and adaptability).

OSG in the Classrooms returned for a fourth year, providing young people in schools across the GTA with free workshops in their classrooms and studios from local, high-achieving, professional artists.

Our free Marquee Ensemble program returned for an eighth year. This year’s cohort of 11 artists and arts lovers identified as Black, Queer and male folks aged 18+, participating in performing workshops together and engaging with the themes and story of A STRANGE LOOP.

This year, the Marquee Ensemble cohort’s first session included a free ticket to a matinee performance of A STRANGE LOOP, with a pre-show symposium in partnership with the Black Gay Men’s Network (BGMN): BLACK, QUEER & CENTRE STAGE.

The symposium featured a panel discussion with artists Kwaku Okyere and Tsholo Khalema moderated by Robert Ball from the BGMN, with refreshments and a gathering space for pre-and-post show processing.

The symposium was open to the public, and included the participation of Obsidian Theatre ’s staff and participants of their Young, Gifted and Black program.
