By ERIK SCHELZIG Associated Press Writer NASHVILLE— A national group called the American Future Fund is spending up to $250,000 on television ads hammering Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Haslam for price gouging cases brought against a family-owned Pilot chain of truck stops. The Haslam campaign responded Tuesday that the outside group is mounting “last minute smears” about the candidate and the company. PIGEON FORGE — A Parkway swimwear and souvenir shop with a distinctive entryway through a shark’s mouth will soon be allowed more signage than city leaders say they intended thanks to a threat of litigation. Though the imposing 50-foot fish might give some hint, there’s not a single sign at the retailer to let passersby know its name — Jaws. However, that will likely soon change after owner Uzi Maman brought up the possibility of a lawsuit. When the shop was built a couple years ago, planning staffers and city officials agreed its options for advertising would be limited. That’s because they consider the fishy building element to be equivalent to a marquee sign such as those sometimes used at movie theaters. With a city ordinance that limits the square footage of signs at a business, the city leaders felt the business had used up most of its allotted advertising on the shark. That left only a few feet, which Maman used to put up a small lighted sign showing the wares available inside. Though at the time it seemed Maman at least accepted the arrangement, he has apparently been working since to renegotiate it. That has

PIGEON FORGE — Soaking up the sun is not a bad way to spend your summer — just ask Shareece White, a lifeguard at Pigeon Forge Community Center. “This is my third year at the pool,” said White, who recently graduated from Pigeon Forge High School. “I had a friend who had worked here and told me it was a good job.” Not that it’s an easy job — White, the daughter of Reece and Sharon White, had to go through training that involved CPR education and passing a swim test. Fortunately, the pool has remained catastrophefree so far this summer. “We try to prevent things before they happen,” White said. The teen is headed to East Tennessee State University this fall, where she’ll major in elementary education and cheer on the cheerleading squad. “I liked the teaching program they have there,” she said of her college selection. “My cousin also went to school there.” Before the summer is over, she’ll head to cheerleading camp at the school, where she’ll learn new routines and compete against other schools’ See neighbor, Page A4

PIGEON FORGE — Dollywood’s new Adventure Theater hosts The Passing Zone through Sunday, one element of the park’s annual KidsFest celebration. The Passing Zone features the juggling of Owen Morse and Jon Wee. The Passing Zone has five Guinness World Records and 18

Haslam’s rivals sharpen attacks in final TV debate NASHVILLE — Republican Bill Haslam’s rivals in Tennessee’s gubernatorial contest on Monday sharpened their attacks on the Knoxville mayor in the last televised debate before early voting starts. Haslam was joined at the debate at Belmont University by fellow Republicans Zach Wamp and Ron Ramsey, and by Mike McWherther, the only Democrat running this year. Early voting for the Aug. 5 primary begins Friday. Wamp, a congressman from Chattanooga, directly challenged the authenticity of Haslam’s campaign, which has posted the dominant fundraising totals of the race so far. “There’s so much propaganda with all of your money about creating a persona, a person, that is not the real Bill Haslam,� Wamp said. “And I’m going to stand on the truth, and you’re not the guy that all of your money says you are.� Ramsey, a Blountville auctioneer and speaker of the state Senate, agreed that Haslam has an unfair advantage. “Mayor Haslam is trying to buy the race,� Ramsey said. “He wouldn’t even be a legitimate candidate if it wasn’t for the money they were spending.� Haslam largely deflected the criticism of his bid and said the tough primary contest has made him better qualified for office. “Democracy is a long

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Negro Leagues take the baseball field again on Thursday as the Postal Service honors the organizations that gave black players a chance to show their talents before the major leagues were integrated. A pair of 44-cent commemorative stamps will be dedicated in ceremonies at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Mo. One stamp shows a close play at home plate, while the other commemorates Andrew “Rube� Foster, founder of the leagues that operated from 1920 to 1960. Legendary stars who played in the leagues included Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, James “Cool Papa� Bell, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks and Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball in 1945.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee revenue collections have fallen short of expectations, but the state’s sales tax rate has shown a third consecutive month of growth. General fund collections, which reflect economic activity in the previous month, missed projections by $9.3 million in June. Finance Commissioner Dave Goetz noted in a release Tuesday that sales taxes — which account for two out of every three tax dollars collected by the state — grew by 0.7 percent despite the record flooding that occurred in May. Corporate franchise and excise taxes, meanwhile, came in at $21 million more than projected. For the first eleven months of the budget year, the general fund fell $225 million short of original estimates. The new budget year began July 1.

GREENEVILLE (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a Bluff City couple pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice during an investigation into stolen military equipment that was sold overseas. A news release from the U.S. Attorney’s office in Eastern Tennessee says Ronald W. Abram and Carol Hurst Abram entered the plea Tuesday in federal court in Greeneville. According to prosecutors, the couple’s son, Ronald William Abram III, is a former Marine who recently pleaded guilty in federal court in Hawaii to conspiring to sell military technology and unlawful disposition of a firearm stolen from the U.S. Marine Corps. Investigators say Ronald and Carol Abram directed others to destroy and conceal the equipment, provided false and misleading information and concealed the location of the stolen equipment. Gathering, was also selected as a finalist in the Miss Tennessee Homecoming Queen Pageant, which recognizes young women for their academic achievement and community service. Before she takes on college life, she’ll make the most of her summer — and her lifeguarding job. “I like how cooperative and friendly the staff are here, and I like working with the public.”

Gas prices peaked at Pilot stations in Knoxville at $4.99 a gallon. Pilot was also fined in Georgia and Kentucky. Haslam was president of Pilot until he was elected Knoxville mayor in 2003. But he maintains an unspecified stake in the company. Ryan said his group is concerned over Haslam’s refusal to divulge how much he earns from his part ownership of Pilot. Haslam’s campaign has said releasing his Pilot earnings would reveal personal information about the income of family members not running for office, and proprietary information about the company with annual revenues of $16 billion. “We firmly believe Tennesseans have been harmed by Mr. Haslam’s

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration unveiled a new national HIV and AIDS strategy Tuesday that officials said reflects a nation at a turning point in its fight against the epidemic. While medical breakthroughs have greatly improved quality of life for the 1.1 million Americans living with HIV, the U.S. has struggled to lower the rate of new infections. The new strategy sets a goal of reducing new infections by 25 percent over the next five years. About 56,000 people in the U.S. become infected each year, a rate that has held steady for about a decade. “We’ve been keeping pace when we should be gaining ground,� said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius during a White House event announcing the strategy. President Barack Obama was to discuss the new plan at a reception honoring the work of the HIV and AIDS community Tuesday evening. The plan also calls for a renewed focus on increasing access to care, with the goal of getting treatment for 85 percent of patients

BP to begin slowly choking Gulf oil geyser NEW ORLEANS (AP) — In a potentially pivotal moment in the Gulf crisis, BP planned to begin closing valves Tuesday in a slow and methodical process that could finally choke off the geyser of crude at the bottom of the sea after three gloomy months and up to 180 million gallons spilled. A new, tighter-fitting cap was lowered over the blown-out well Monday night. The next phase was to shut the openings in the 75-ton metal stack of pipes and valves gradually, one at a time, while watching pressure gauges to see if the cap would hold or any new leaks erupted. The operation was expected to begin late Tuesday, and officials said it could last anywhere from six to 48 hours. BP and the government’s point man on the crisis — the biggest offshore oil spill in U.S. history and one of the nation’s worst environmental disasters — stressed there were no guarantees, and they urged patience from Gulf residents. “They ought to be interested and concerned, but if they hold their breath, they’ll run out of oxygen,� retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen told The Associated Press. If the cap works, it will enable BP to stop the oil from gushing into the sea, either by holding all the oil inside the well machinery like a stopper or, if the pressure is too great, channeling some though pipes to as many as four collection ships. Along the Gulf Coast, where the spill has heavily damaged the region’s vital tourism and fishing industries, people anxiously awaited the outcome of the painstakingly slow work. “I don’t know what’s taking them so long. I just hope they take care of it,� said Lanette Eder, a vacationing school nutritionist from Hoschton, Ga., who was walking on the white sand at Pensacola Beach, Fla. The cap is just a stopgap measure. The best hope for stopping the leak altogether rests with a relief well being drilled through the seafloor. BP hopes to use it by mid-August to plug up the broken well permanently with heavy drilling mud and cement. After that, the Gulf Coast faces a long cleanup.

President Barack Obama’s new strategy sets a goal of reducing new AIDS/HIV infections by 25 percent over the next five years. within three months of their diagnosis; concentrating HIV prevention efforts at the highestrisk populations, which include gay and bisexual men as well as black Americans; and increasing education about the virus, even in communities with low rates of infection. “The progress we’ve made in the past 30 years has come with an unintended side affect — Americans have become less fearful of HIV and AIDS,� Sebelius said. “We can’t afford that kind of complacency.� The report is the result of more than a year of discussions between the administration, state and local officials, advocacy groups and the private sector. The administration is

allocating $30 million from the massive health care overhaul Congress passed earlier this year toward implementation of the strategy. Some AIDS activists have criticized the plan for not setting more ambitous goals, and for not funding the benchmarks it does lay out. “The president’s plan is so flawed that it might actually represent a step backwards in combating HIV and AIDS in the United States,� said Charles King, president of Housing Works, a community-based AIDS organization. The strategy aims to copy some of the steps credited with spurring the success of a Bush-era policy to fight AIDS in hardhit developing countries. That includes setting spe-

cific targets and mandating coordination among different government agencies to guard against missteps and wasted, duplicated efforts. “We’ve never had that kind of coordinated, accountable effort to address AIDS in America, and that’s what we need,� said Chris Collins of the Foundation for AIDS Research, one of the groups that met with administration officials. There is a new HIV infection every 9 1/2 minutes in the U.S. But about one of every five people living with HIV doesn’t know it. Access to care plays a role in prevention, too, because the more virus in someone’s bloodstream, the easier it is for that person to spread infection through such things as unprotected sex. In one step toward reducing disparities in access to care, the Obama administration on Friday reallocated $25 million to states that have waiting lists for their AIDS Drug Assistance Programs, which provide treatment help for the uninsured and underinsured. The National Alliance of State & Territorial AIDS Directors reported that more than 2,200 people in 12 states were on waiting lists for ADAP help as of last week.

Midsize cars tweaked to boost gas mileage DETROIT (AP) — To improve gas mileage, automakers are tweaking cars and trucks between model years, especially in the cost-conscious and popular market for sedans. Honda Motor Co. recently announced changes in its Accord sedan that boosted highway mileage by almost 10 percent from the 2010 to 2011 model years. Haslam donates $400K to campaign By ERIK SCHELZIG Associated Press Writer NASHVILLE — Bill Haslam may be lapping the Republican gubernatorial field in fundraising, but that’s not stopping him from pouring in some of his own personal wealth. The Knoxville mayor’s campaign finance report Monday night showed he gave his campaign $400,000 in June. Early voting for the Aug. 5 primary is set to begin Friday. Haslam noted that both of his Republican rivals —

state Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey of Blountville and U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp of Chattanooga — had already made personal contributions to their campaigns earlier in the race. Haslam spent about $3.5 million in the quarter ending June 30, and raised $1.7 million from outside sources. West Virginia governor knows history lesson After the hateful Third Reich of Adolf Hitler was crushed and World War II was won, the 16 American owners of Major League Baseball teams voted 15 to one against desegregating America’s pastime, against allowing blacks to play on the same field with whites. The commissioner of baseball at that time, A.B. “Happy” Chandler courageously overturned the owners’ vote, which enabled Jackie Robinson to break baseball’s color line in the 1947 season. Years later, Democrat Chandler, a former Kentucky governor and U.S. senator, explained his decision: “I thought someday I’d have to meet my Maker, and He’d say, ‘What did you do with those black boys?’’’ “Happy” Chandler also made U.S. history. In the 97 years since the ratification of the 17th amendment to the Constitution establishing the direct election of U.S. senators by popular vote, nine state governors have resigned their governorships to accept appointment — from the man who just succeeded him as governor — to a vacant U.S. Senate seat. Not surprisingly, voters dislike this too-cute procedure that amounts to a governor “appointing “ himself to the Senate. Of the nine governors who did just that, eight of them were punished at the polls and denied election to the Senate. Only Happy Chandler — who resigned the Kentucky governor’s office on Oct. 9, 1939, and accepted appointment to the Senate the next day — was able to keep his Senate seat by winning the 1940 election. Chandler won a full six-year term in 1942, which he left to accept the baseball commissioner’s job in November 1945. The other eight governors who tried — John Erickson of Montana (1933), Charles Gossett of Idaho (1945), Edward Carville of Nevada (1945), John Hickey of Wyoming (1961), Edwin Mechem of New Mexico (1962), J. Howard Edmondson of Oklahoma (1963), Donald Russell of South Carolina (1965) and Wendell Anderson of Minnesota (1976) — all were defeated the next time they faced the voters. It may or may not be relevant, but of the nine, New Mexico’s Mechem was the only Republican. All the other “self-appointees” were Democrats. Because of the recent death of West Virginia’s senior senator, 92-yearold Robert C. Byrd, the Mountaineer State’s current governor, Democrat Joe Manchin, has the power to fill the Senate vacancy. As a tribute to Manchin’s broad appeal (or, maybe, to his deliberate ambiguity), both the West Virginia AFL-CIO and state Chamber of Commerce have urged him to appoint himself to Byrd’s seat. While admitting to a strong interest in running for the Senate seat, Manchin has, wisely, refused to appoint himself — and rather than having an appointed successor serve until 2012, has instead pushed to hold a special election for the Senate seat this Nov. 2 One advantage to Manchin of holding the special Senate election on the regularly scheduled Nov. 2 Election Day is that he would not have to give up the governor’s chair (he’s now in the middle of his second four-year term), but any West Virginia member of Congress — read, Republican Shelley Moore Capito — who wants to be senator would have to surrender that House seat to run. If a special Senate election were to be held in 2011, the House members could keep their seats while taking a free shot at the Senate race. Whatever happens in the West Virginia Senate contest, Joe Manchin appears to have learned what too many governors have failed to grasp: When it comes to making themselves into senators, for governors the Power of Appointment has been Historically Hazardous. — Mark Shields is a veteran political campaign manager and frequent television talk show commentator. From China with love Special group of children, adoptive American parents make trek to Sevier Seven days a week, 365 days a year, we extend our warmest welcome to thousands of visitors. They come from all over the United States because of our unique attractions and special brand of hospitality. Our casa, their casa. All of our visitors are special, but over the weekend, thanks to Smoky Mountain Palace, an extraordinary group of about 800 people came to our community. The theater on Collier Drive held its second annual Chinese Children Reunion for kids from that faraway land who had been adopted into American families. It was an appropriate setting because, as most in the community know, the theater features elite Chinese acrobats. It was a day that tugged at the heartstrings as a story and the pictures that appeared in Monday’s Mountain Press showed. It was a chance for parents from all over the country to share

stories about how they came to adopt children from such a different culture. And it was a chance for those children to interact with, as one child told his American mom last year, “Kids who look just like me.” The stories were so much different but, in many ways, so much alike. The common thread was the bringing together of parents who wanted these children, and children who needed to be loved. “We had been on the domestic list for a year when we felt led to China,” said South Carolinian Beth Brock who, with husband David, has two adopted Chinese daughters, 6 and 3. “The experience has been such a wonderful blessing. They have fit in with our family so well.” Another heartwarming story was that of a Kodak couple, Roger and Jill Allen, who two years ago adopted an infant girl with a hole in her heart.

Surgery to fix the problem was successful and today Alyssa is 3 and living a healthy, happy life. Smoky Mountain Palace made sure the kids were entertained with a variety of games and festivities. There was a staging of “Soul of Shaolin” for the families, a buffet, and Bluebell even donated 500 ice cream cups. Many of the children were just infants when they were adopted and knew little about their heritage. The gathering gave them a chance to become more familiar with their culture in an informal and fun setting. Topping it all off was a pen pal matchup so these children can stay in touch with their new friends. Memories are made every day by thousands of visitors to Sevier County. None, however, may be as special as the ones made by those who gathered last weekend at Smoky Mountain Palace. They are welcome anytime.

Public forum ‘Multitude’ of fools gave us Barack Obama as president

Editor: The following paragraph, by an unknown author, was circulated earlier this year on the internet: “The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the presidency. It would be easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr.

Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails us. Blaming the prince of fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.” One part of the paragraph that I disagree with is that Obama is a fool. He is far from it — he is an evil, egotistical, conniving narcissist with an agenda who is determined to destroy our way of life. He is attempting to destroy capitalism and have the government take over as many functions of our every day life as possible.

His spending has the government on the verge of bankruptcy. His abominable health care plan, opposed by 62 percent of the population, will result in rationing of services, especially to the elderly. Adolph Hitler once referred to the elderly as “useless eaters”; I wonder what euphemism Obama would use. The last sentence of the paragraph is correct: It was a multitude of fools who made him president. Here was a man with no more experience that being a “community organizer” and having glib tongue, and the fools were enthralled. God help the United States. Dick Dierenbach Sevierville

Seymour hoping to regain status as county golf power By JASON DAVIS Sports Editor SEYMOUR — The one-time powerhouse Seymour Eagles golf program is going through some growing pains. A move up from A-AA to AAA high school golf last season without the 2008 county golf champion Andrew Ramsey proved difficult for the boys team, which had always been a constant fixture near the top of District 3-A/AA. The 2009 cast of Eagles were very young and struggled for the most part, as none of their players qualified for the region. “We’ve moved into a very, very tough district in golf,” Seymour coach Gary Householder said. “Jefferson County, Cocke County and both the Morristown schools are very, very good. In fact in the three 18-hole tournaments last year that we were in Morristown West won the IMAC Tournament, Jefferson County won the district tournament and then Cocke County won the regional tournament. They’re all three very, very good teams and got most of their players back.” But this year Householder is expecting his Eagles to be a little more competitive, mostly due to the growing games of rising junior Micheal Bennett and sophomore Justice Murphy. “A lot of kids really love (golf) and start playing when they’re 9 or 10-years-old,” Householder said. “We’ve got two like that — Michael Bennett and Justice Murphy. They both love the game, and they’ve been out here (at Creekside Plantation Golf Course)

all summer long. “They both averaged low 40s last year, and I expect them to both be 36-37 this year more consistently,” the coach said. Joining the pair will be junior Connor Simmons and sophomores Parker Rutter, Andrew Boling and Lance Galyon. On the girls side, Seymour has enough players to field a team, but no more. GATLINBURG — During a national recession, there’s nothing like some free football. For the third consecutive year, the GatlinburgPittman Highlanders gridiron program this week provided some instruction in fundamentals of the sport at no charge for area youth. “Of course, I’ve been around this sport for so long that I’m old school, so to speak,” said 39th-year G-P head football coach Benny Hammonds. “But I just think that if kids want to get out and enjoy some athletics and sports, they ought to have the opportunity to do that without maybe financially being held back a little bit. “You can’t put your finger on it, so you don’t know exactly how many kids who wanted the opportunity to come to a camp that don’t because of finances. “So I just think this is the way it ought to be, and we’re lucky enough to be in a situation here with assistant coaches and senior football players willing to give of their time and just supporting the whole idea to let these kids have a good time and teach them the fundamentals of football without worrying about having to pay for it.” The roughly 40 kids who

reported for the G-P football camp first got a tour of the field house and locker room before taking a seat in the Highlanders’ film room to listen to coach Hammond — who is just two wins shy of 300 for his career — and his philosophies on the sport. But after a few minutes of sitting in the air-conditioned facility, the group of youngsters, seniors and coaches hit the heat of the practice field to imitate how the high school team warms up before breaking up into position-specific stations to run through high schoolstyle drills. “We’re trying to specialize in the fundamentals of their particular positions,” said Hammonds. “And we’ll spend about a third of camp time going on offensive fundamentals and about a third of the time going with the defensive fundamentals.” And because kids are kids, the other third of the time was all about fun ... although fun in football helps promote the competitive side of the sport while allowing the youth to apply their newly learned fundamentals in the process. “They love to play that Air Force Football,” said Hammonds, referring to a passing league-type football game. “They love that competition.” mpsports@themountainpress.com

in 1997 and has never suited up for another NBA team, expects to sign a two-year contract with the Heat later this week, agent Herb Rudoy said Tuesday. The two-year deal would come with a player option for the second season, Rudoy said.

“We’ve agreed to agree,” Rudoy said. The Heat had no immediate comment. They had talks about acquiring Ilgauskas when he was available this past season after being dealt in a three-team trade to Washington. The Wizards

subsequently bought out his contract and made him a free agent. Ilgauskas is the Cavs’ career leader in games played, blocked shots and rebounds. The 7-foot-3 Lithuanian was drafted by the club in 1996 and over-

came serious foot injuries that nearly ended his career. He’s just the latest name to join what shapes up as a serious title contender in Miami, joining not only James but Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller, who agreed

Arguing with ‘The King’ not a great move for Allmendinger When I first heard that A.J. Allmendinger and Richard Petty had a heated exchange last week in the Daytona garage area my initial thought was, ‘Who has a heated exchange with Richard Petty?’ Days after the incident I am still wondering the same thing. Of all people I would suspect not to have a heated exchange, Richard Petty would be near the top of my list. Of course, everyone has moments in which they say or do things they

wish had not been said or done. However, there are some things that even in the ‘heat of the moment’ can cause devastating backlash. It would seem that arguing with one of the sport’s all time legends and a recent Hall of Fame inductee would be one of those things. This may have been one of those moments for Allmendinger. Richard Petty Motorsports official Robbie Loomis has put out the ‘heat of the moment’ statement on

behalf of Allmendinger, but this could be one of those things that may well go down as unforgivable in the eyes of many fans. Even after years having passed since he last sat behind the wheel of a race car, Petty commands tremendous respect

among those who follow the sport of NASCAR. For that matter, he is one of the most recognized and respected figures in all of sports, not just racing. Allmendinger has shown flashes of talent and skill. And with that, he has built up a bit of a fan base. Sevierville racer Blake Jones doubles up on wins at Lonesome Pine Raceway SEVIERVILLE — One day, two races and two wins was just all in a days work for Blake Jones as he made his way to Lonesome Pine Raceway in Coeburn, Va., to race in both the Late Model and Charger divisions. First on the docket for Jones was competing in the Charger division, a Limited Late Model division competing with a crate engine, in his #80 Mountain Dew Chevy. Jones secured his spot on the pole with a blistering fast qualifying time. With the prime starting position, Jones was able to keep the lead for the entire race with only one caution flag slowing him down in the process. With the win Jones felt a wave of momentum and confidence hit him, a wave that was muchneeded heading into the 50 lap Late Model feature. While Jones had been able to place his Mountain Dew ride fifth on the board after qualifying there was a need for the team to work on the car between qualifying and the race, causing Jones to be placed at the rear of the field for the start. Although the daunting task of making his way from the rear of the field in order to be able to even contend for the win would stifle many drivers, Jones saw it as a challenge he was ready and willing to tackle

off challenges from the rest of the field in order to protect his lead and take home his second checkered flag. But each time that his pace would get slowed by that yellow flag Jones would get back up on his horse and ride on. Yankees owner George Steinbrenner dies at 80 By RONALD BLUM AP Sports Writer NEW YORK — George Steinbrenner, whose big wallet and win-at-all-cost attitude whipped the New York Yankees into a billiondollar sports empire, died Tuesday. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday July 4. Steinbrenner had a heart attack, was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and died at about 6:30 a.m, a person close to the owner told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed those details. “George was ’The Boss,’ make no mistake,� Hall of Famer Yogi Berra said. “He built the Yankees into champions, and that’s something nobody can ever deny. He was a very generous, caring, passionate man. George and I had our differences, but who didn’t? We became great friends over the last decade and I will miss him very much.� In 37-plus seasons as owner, Steinbrenner led the

Yankees to seven World Series championships, 11 American League pennants and George Steinbrenner 16 AL East titles. “He was and always will be as much of a New York Yankee as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford and all of the other Yankee legends,� baseball commissioner Bud Selig said. “Although we would have disagreements over the years, they never interfered with our friendship and commitment to each other. Our friendship was built on loyalty and trust and it never wavered.� Steinbrenner’s death on the day of the All-Star game was the second in three days to rock the Yankees. Bob Sheppard, the team’s revered public address announcer from 1951-07, died Sunday at 99. New York was 11 years removed from its last championship when

Steinbrenner headed a group that bought the team from CBS Inc. on Jan. 3, 1973, for about $10 million. He revolutionized the franchise — and sports — by starting his own television network and ballpark food company. Forbes now values the Yankees at $1.6 billion, trailing only Manchester United ($1.8 billion) and the Dallas Cowboys ($1.65 billion). “He was an incredible and charitable man,� his family said in a statement. “He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again.� He ruled with obsessive dedication to detail, overseeing everything from trades to the airblowers that kept his ballparks spotless. He admittedly was overbearing, screaming at all from commissioners to managers to secretaries. His reign was interrupted for suspensions, including a 15-month ban in 1974 after his guilty plea to conspiring to make illegal contribu-

tions to President Richard Nixon’s re-election campaign. He was pardoned 15 years later by President Ronald Reagan. The son of a shipping magnate, Steinbrenner lived up to his billing as “the Boss,� a nickname he earned and clearly enjoyed as he ruled with an iron fist. While he lived in Tampa he was a staple on the front pages of New York newspapers. “He was truly the most influential and innovative owner in all of sports,� former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said. “He made the Yankees a source of great pride in being a New Yorker.� Steinbrenner’s mansion, on a leafy street in an older neighborhood of south Tampa, was quiet Tuesday. He fined Gilbert on Monday, calling the letter and comments Gilbert later made in an interview with The Associated Press that he felt James quit in the playoffs the past two seasons “a little extreme.� On Tuesday, some Cleveland fans offered to pitch in to help Gilbert pay the penalty. Dear Annie: My girlfriend got pregnant during our senior year, so I married her to do the right thing. At first, it was great living together, even with the baby. But now, five years later, we have two kids and she’s pregnant again. I know it takes both of us to make a baby, but she is the one responsible for birth control, and I didn’t want any more kids. The only fun I have is playing league baseball, and once in a while, I get out with the guys. Annie, I’m only 23 and want more out of life. We both work, but after paying the bills, we don’t have a dime left. Sex is rare. I work around hot women all the time. My wife is going to take two months off of work before the baby is born, and life at home will be miserable. With another child, she will be grumpier than ever. I feel trapped. My friends, single and married, have a lot more fun than I do. Sometimes after a few drinks, I feel a rage inside and have to walk away to calm down. Don’t you think my wife has some responsibility to be more loving to me? I don’t even know what my question is, but I know something has to change. -- Tired of It All Dear Tired: We commend you for being responsible, but one problem with marrying young and for obligatory reasons is that you feel you’ve missed out.
