THE GREENEST APPAREL COMPANY IN THE USA From day one we have always used the highest quality natural materials to create our apparel. We start with a white garment made from 100% natural USA cotton (down to the thread holding it together). To color our garments, we use fiber reactive organic dyes to create over 800 colors that are inspired by nature.

Next our garments are printed with environmentally friendly water-based inks. Most screen printers use solvent based inks made primarily of plastic (petroleum) that have a rough feel and contain toxic Phthalates. While many printers are trying to kick the chemical habit and learn how to use water based inks, we are light years ahead of them. We are the pioneers of using water based discharge ink and have perfected its use to create photo-realistic imagery that is not attainable by other screen printers. For many years, the founders have been involved with Green Causes. One of them has been a longtime advocate of local, national and worldwide conservation organizations dedicated to keeping land preserved so that ecosystems can remain intact for future generations. Another has had his personal land certified as an organic farm, making it possible for local farmers to use this land to grow organic food.

Our Dye Oxidation System (DOS), purifies our manufacturing process waste water by removing color and additives without the addition of chemicals.

Being “green” to us means being mindful of our choices which have a direct impact on the environment and future generations.

GREEN INITIATIVES • Since 1992 we have used 100% cotton, grown and woven in the USA. • Since 1993 we have used water-based ink. • Since 1994 we have used organic reactive dyes. • In 1999 we began the digital edition of our catalog to save on waste and save trees. • In 2000 we began conversion of our lighting, company-wide to save our natural resources. • In 2004 The Mountain’s Apparel was Oekotex 100% certified (one of the highest qualifications worldwide). This guarantees our shirts are free of chemicals harmful to your body. • In 2006 we converted to DTS (Direct to Screen) for printing our separations eliminating thousands of pounds of plastic film per year. • In 2010 we “closed the loop” on all our cardboard waste, and now use boxes to ship your orders that are made of 100% recycled cardboard. • In 2011 our Dye Oxidation System (DOS) went on line (see above)* • In 2012 we installed filtered water fountains company wide to reduce plastic bottle waste. • Since June 2013 we have been able to reuse 3,000,000 gallons of water that was purified by our DOS system. • From 2014 to 2015 we extensively upgraded our facilities lighting by replacing old, inefficient lights with state-of-the-art LED lights reducing energy use for lighting by 30%. • In 2015 we installed an automated screen washing system that recycles 50% of it’s process water.

A Fresh Perspective on Artwear It’s hard to believe that we’re already preparing to ring in a New Year. Ready or not, 2017 is coming and we’re getting ready to roll out an exceptional compilation of new and awe inspiring artwear. This year, we’ve made some big changes to the way we’re showcasing our gallery of wearable masterpieces. We’re excited to introduce a new design concept for our product pages that we think you’ll find much more user friendly and just as stunning to behold. Not to mention that by going with this new layout, we’ve reduced our page count by over 100 pages! That’s a pretty big deal, as far as we’re concerned.

Here are some of the big changes you’ll notice as you peruse this year’s catalog: • Each artwear collection begins with rich photography, showcasing our best-selling designs within that collection • Art is presented in block format, keeping attention on the art and eliminating overlap that prevents you from seeing the entire image • Item numbers for each body style available are clearly listed beneath each image, eliminating the need for distracting icons You’ll also notice that we spread the Artist Spotlights out a bit. Last year we included profiles for many of our artists. This year we’ve focused on new artists, with a few of our veteran artist partners sprinkled in. This is by no means a comprehensive representation of the vast pool of talented artists that we are privileged to work with. We encourage you to visit us online to read more about our artists. You’ll find all of last year’s Spotlights, along with some new ones, at wholesale.themountain.com/pages/artist-bio. The big news, besides the new layout, is of course the new art! We are very proud of the new additions, and are sure you’ll be pleased as you look through these pages. Notable new collections include the Selfies line, by Howard Robinson. An adorable collection of images, portraying animals mimicking this often comical, and very human, trend that seems to be growing daily. We’re also thrilled to welcome artist Jody Bergsma, whose dreamy illustrations remind us of the interconnectedness of all things in nature. A strong message that we can certainly relate to. Then there’s a collection of new designs by renowned British fantasy artist Anne Stokes, whose work is celebrated by fans around the world. Her art depicts a wide range of subjects and often includes portraits of strong women characters, conquering the odds and creating their own destinies. It’s implied… This year we’ve also decided to dedicate a little space to the various non-profit organizations that The Mountain has partnered with. We are so very proud to work with these groups and to support their thoughtful and ambitious initiatives, all aimed at making our world a better place. Each segment is followed immediately by a collection of tee shirt designs that we’ve created specifically for each charity. Dot Sheehan, Founder/CEO of Operation Hat Trick, talks with us about the OHT mission and impact on wounded service members and veterans. The Mountain: For people who are just meeting your organization for the first time, what is Operation Hat Trick? DOT: Operation Hat Trick is a non-profit organization that generates awareness and support for the recovery of wounded service members and Veterans through the sale of OHT branded merchandise, proceeds of which are distributed to selected organizations that support the OHT mission, with a portion of every sale coming back to OHT. M: Where did the idea for Operation Hat Trick come from? D: In 2007 I was listening to a Boston radio station. The contest of the day asked this question: ”What is the one thing head wounded soldiers coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan want the most?” The answer was a baseball cap that would cover wounds, swelling, burns, treatment, and bandages. I was so taken by it that I knew I had to do something. I was working at the University of New Hampshire at the time in Athletics, and at UNH we lived and died by hockey, so in the middle of the night I came up with the name Operation Hat Trick. A few months after I had this idea, the son of a UNH Professor and his wife, Nate Hardy, was killed in Iraq along with fellow Navy SEAL, Mike Koch. Both were Navy SEALS. We dedicated OHT to them. OHT went National in 2012 and today we have 269 colleges and universities, 100 high schools, 70 Minor League Baseball teams, 21 NHL teams, NASCAR and over 50 companies that have adopted OHT.

M: What kind of support does OHT provide for service members? D: OHT fills some white space. By that I mean there is a huge gap between what is covered by benefits/insurance and the great need that wounded service members and veterans have. We fill some of that need. Things like home heating oil for a Veteran who has PTSD and cannot work; shoes for prosthetics legs; the cost of service dogs; staff that manages retreats for Veterans who need help acclimating back into their communities; adaptive equipment, etc.

M: What’s been one of the highlights so far in the Operation Hat Trick community? D: Seeing service members and Veterans progress in their recovery thanks to our donations. Seeing High Schools celebrate Awareness Week, where students learn about the sacrifices of the military and gain an understanding of the support the military needs. Watching colleges, universities, and major league teams celebrate OHT during their Military Days, and certainly hearing first-hand from recovering service members and Veterans just what a profound impact OHT has had on them.

M: Was there a particular moment when you realized just how big of an impact OHT was making? D: I actually underestimated the power of what had been created. OHT combines the love of one’s school/university/team/ company with the love of one’s country, and that is a very powerful combination. Sometimes I still underestimate exactly what has happened with OHT, but when I saw colleges and universities make such a commitment to the program, I knew we had something very special. It’s been the easiest conversation to have with anyone. Everyone can relate on some level. Also when we started to generate money and saw just what good we were doing to help fill so many needs, I knew that this was going to be a success I never, ever, imagined.

M: Is there anything students/alumni from schools that haven’t adopted Operation Hat Trick can do to make their school aware of your organization, and help advocate for it? D: We are very proactive trying to get those schools that have not adopted OHT to do so. The sky is the limit here so getting everyone on board is the goal, but a very lofty one. It’s why we have partnerships with the Mountain and other licensees. They help in getting the word out, and every time a supporter buys and wears OHT gear, and uses OHT products we are increasing visibility and exposure. M: At the end of the day, what is the one thing you hope sticks with people after learning about OHT? D: That Operation Hat Trick is an organization that knows where every dollar goes; that we select organizations to whom we make donations very carefully; and that at the end of the day we fill even just a little bit of the growing need among the wounded military community.

Best Friends Animal Society® Best Friends Animal Society is the only national animal welfare organization focused exclusively on ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. An authority and leader in the no-kill movement, Best Friends runs the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals, as well as lifesaving programs in partnership with rescue groups and shelters across the country. HOW DRESSING WILD CAN HELP HIV+ MOTHERS AND THEIR CHILDREN IN KENYA: An Interview With Verdayle’s Baby Wild® Artist, Verdayle Forget, and Susanne Garrison, founder of the Wana Duma Children’s Project.

The Mountain has been working with artist Verdayle Forget for 10+ blissful years. Her soft, yet realistic, illustration style has become a Mountain staple; Her love for all animals is obvious in the delicate rendering of her subjects, but what you don’t see behind those soulful strokes is Verdayle’s profound dedication for those in need. This year we wanted to help her express that unyielding compassion, so we approached her with this question: “Would you like a portion of proceeds from your new collection to go to a charity of your choice?” Without hesitation, she named the Wana Duma Children’s Project. Verdayle and Wana Duma founder, Susanne Garrison, have been friends for years, and are a mutual support system for each other. We sat down with each of them to talk about what drives them, their life’s work, and how fate tends to bring people together to do extraordinary things.

Q + A WITH VERDAYLE FORGET, THE ARTIST BEHIND VERDAYLE’S BABY WILD® COLLECTION The Mountain: Hi, Verdayle. Let’s start with the basics. Where did your inspiration come for Verdayle’s Baby Wild®? Verdayle Forget: I have been working with The Mountain for ten years. Michael McGloin, the Art Director, and I were in a telephone discussion one day and he asked me, “How would you like your own Brand?” We were talking about having a theme of baby animals, and I said, “Baby Wild”. I applied for a Trademark and in that process I added my name to the front to make it unique, and Verdayle’s Baby Wild® was born. I put aside all commitments and began photographing and painting baby animals and horses. TM: How did you first find out about Wana Duma? How did you meet Susanne Garrison? Verdayle: I first found out about Susanne Garrison years before Wana Duma. I was introduced to her by a mutual friend. I had seen a documentary about The Cheetah Conservation Fund. I told my friend about it, and she said, “I know a lady that goes to Africa and volunteers there.” My comment was , “Sure you do.” I was given Susanne’s telephone number and she came to my studio to see my work. Come to find out she lives five minutes away from me. I was commissioned to do a painting of Cheetahs for a fund raiser poster. That was 19 years ago. Meeting Susanne has been a true blessing, she has many of my paintings and we are a great support system for each other. Susanne founded Wana Duma in 2002 when she witnessed the need of AIDS orphaned children and the elderly grandmothers that care for them. I was introduced by proxy to a young girl that was a budding artist. When Susanne went back to Africa I would send art supplies with her for Elizabeth and Elizabeth would send drawings and letters back to me when Susanne came back to The States. TM: What is it about the Wana Duma Children’s Project that made you want to dedicate your collection to their mission? Verdayle: When I was seven years old my 3-month-old baby sister passed away. In my will I have donated all of my original paintings to Seattle Children’s Hospital to be sold at auction for the greatest need of the kids. They have right of first refusal for the original paintings in Verdayle’s Baby Wild®. When I see the incredible work, sacrifice, and dedication Wana Duma does for those kids, that is where my heart is. If one child can be saved it will have been worth it. I will continue to paint for the children for the rest of my life. Q+A WITH WANA DUMA CHILDREN’S PROJECT FOUNDER, SUSANNE GARRISON When Susanne Garrison volunteered to go to Africa with the Cheetah Conservation Fund in 1997, she had no idea that it would lead to a life dedicated to helping children affected by the AIDS epidemic in Africa, but to quote her long-time friend, and Wana Duma contributor, Verdayle Forget, “There are no accidents”.

The Mountain: What compelled you to start Wana Duma? Your background seems to be in Wildlife protection, so what made you begin an organization dedicated to helping school Children in Kenya? Susanne Garrison: In 1994 on the morning of my 40th birthday I found myself sailing over the Serengeti in a Hot Air Balloon....my life was never the same again. I fell madly in love with Africa. I was a sprinter in High School and College and trained for the 1980 Olympics . My Totem animal was, and still is, the Cheetah, the fastest animal on Earth. In 1997 I went to Namibia on an Earthwatch trip to Volunteer with CCF (Cheetah Conservation Fund), upon my return I became the NW Chapter Head for CCF and did Fund raisers and promoted Education Programs for endangered species. In 2001, a friend I met in Namibia was starting a Cheetah Project in Kenya. I had friends there and offered to help get her started. In 2002, at a meeting with some of the local Elders, I was asked if I could assist 30 AIDS Orphans with school (uniforms and fees). At $70 a child, I saw it as a “simple act of kindness”, one that I personally could afford. But I quickly saw that more support was needed for these children left with their aging Cu-cu’s (grandmothers). They had no food, health care, or emotional support. So every year I spent more time caring for these children and less with the Cheetah Project. By 2006 I was spending 2-3 months in Kenya twice a year. In 2008 we went non-profit in the US and officially became Wana Duma Children’s Project. I was alternating 3 months in Kenya and 3 months in the US. For the last 3 years I have split that into 3 trips to Kenya as I need to be there more. We have added mothers who are HIV+ and their children to the Project, realizing that by keeping these mothers healthy, they can live to raise their children, and there will be fewer orphans. This is really a positive and exciting addition and has changed /saved lives. TM: How exactly does Wana Duma help school children and their families? What kind of outreach do you do? Susanne: Wana Duma is an Outreach. We go to each home and access the individual needs of the Cu-cu’s, HIV+ mothers, and children. They are usually added to our feeding program, vitamins, medical as directed, rent so that the sick mothers aren’t forced to work in the fields to feed their children. We pay for the children’s school fees (and often desks and books), uniforms, shoes, backpacks, and extra clothes for all as needed. Each household is different. They may need mosquito nets, blankets, mattresses, extra food or special food. Continued on next page...

TM: Does Wana Duma just operate in Kenya or have you branched out to other locations? Susanne: Our Project’s main focus is in Kenya. In 3 different parts of the Country. GILGIL, two hours North of Nairobi, is our Base where I rent a house and have two pieces of land. On the land we grow food and some staff live there. One piece in particular (7 acres) is called Eco-Village. We are working hard to create a self sustainable “village”. Currently planted with maize, beans, peas, bananas, avocados, mango, orange, lemon and pineapple. We’ve planted 500 endangered trees in honor of Wangari Maathai the first African Woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate for her work saving the trees. In September of 2016, we start a solar /water project with Rotary of Idaho to bring water up the hill to the “village”. The next phase will then be creating fish ponds to feed everyone, and after that, a Nursery school is in the plan.

In the Northern Frontier of Kenya (Samburu land) we’ve helped build two small schools and have started a Medical Fund. This is a very remote area, and I work with in conjunction with the Milgis Trust. I have been going there since 2001 and go twice a year to check on Projects. The third part is an HIV+ mother with 5 children in the Korogocho slums of Nairobi. We’ve been helping her since 2008. By assisting these HIV+ mothers with all needs it keeps their stress levels down and they don’t get sick as often and can be there for their families. 4 years ago we started assisting in our own Community (US). We give out 2 scholarships to High School Grads, and we’re slowly working our way into helping others in need through the local Resource Center (and in the near future, our new YMCA and their food programs). This is very important. If for whatever reason we get shut out of Kenya we can continue to help others in need and what better place than our own Community....and the need is great!!

TM: What’s been one of the biggest accomplishments for Wana Duma and what’s been one of your hardest obstacles? Susanne: This is a hard question...our biggest accomplishments and obstacles are just being able to do what we do in a third world country; To try and understand their cultures (many different tribes and traditions in Kenya). We’ve fed and educated many children that would not have had that chance. We are proud to say we have kids graduated from vocational schools (auto mechanics, bicycle mech, motor cycle mech, carpenters, electrician , seamstress, hairdressing to name a few), and 4 College Grads….When you take on one child you often end up feeding the whole family. TM: How did you meet Verdayle Forget? What’s it been like working with her? Susanne: Verdayle and I met in 1997, right after my return from Namibia; A chance meeting that was meant to be. First her love and support of endangered species and how the Cheetah pulled us together for a reason and a strong friendship bloomed. She was an avid supporter of CCF, and an advocate for the Cheetah work I was doing, and that support continued as the children took over my life. Verdayle and I share a passion for helping others and making this world a better place for all. It is, after all, the “Circle of Life”. We need one another. TM: What is one of your fondest memories so far of your time working with the people of Kenya? Susanne: My fondest memories are the smiles from the children when they get a new pair of shoes, or warm coat, a backpack full of school supplies, and food; The extremely grateful Cu-cu’s and HIV+ mothers when you assist with food and medical needs; To know they go to sleep with a full stomach and warm blanket. Oh, and we never forget the dogs!! ARTIST SPOTLIGHT SCOTT IAN BARRY Scott Ian Barry has worked firsthand with 40 wolves, lived with 10, and observed the behavior of over 100. He has personally performed in excess of 2,500 lectures at schools, universities and museums, and is the only human being in the history of New York City’s Carnegie Hall, to present a live wolf on-stage, who howled with a sold-out audience of 2,200 people. Mr. Barry has aided the states of New York, New Jersey, and Maryland in forming legislation on the ownership of wolves and wolf-dog hybrids. He has lobbied in Congress to support The Federal Airborne Hunting Act, to halt the shooting of wolves in Alaska, from aircraft, and has met with President Carter on behalf of wolves and protection of the environment.

TAMI ALBA As the only daughter of military parents, Tami and her brothers grew up in Italy and Japan as well as several different states in the US. Exposed to exotic cultures, people and wildlife from an early age, Tami became acutely aware of the beauty and importance of the natural world.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT HOWARD ROBINSON Born in the north east of England in 1959, Howard graduated with a BA with honors in 1980 and started out airbrushing images for advertisements, science fiction and various pop stars of the time. Gradually, his love of wildlife began to influence his work and he transitioned into digital art, although his unique style never altered. Howard enjoys all wildlife, although his main interest is birds. Described as the artistic master of adorable animals both wild and tame, that brim with personality and make a person smile. A unique affinity to the creatures Howard creates is evident in his charming paintings which capture the very essence of his subject matter. In 2006 he was commissioned by the First Lady to paint the dogs, “Barney” and “Miss Beazley,” which was presented to President George W. Bush at his 60th birthday.

“After many years of hard work and study, I seem to be living the dream at the moment. From childhood I have always been fascinated by nature and this has become the main feature of my art. I am never short of inspiration, as my work and hobbies have just become one and the same. I count myself very fortunate that I seem to have been born with a natural gift when it comes to interacting with animals. I’m sure my children thought I was some kind of Dr. Doolittle. Having been successful in breeding many rare birds I now get invited to give presentations as far as Africa and Australia, where I am able to explore the wilds with the world’s experts. I visit so many amazing places, I often have to pinch myself. Bursting with inspiration and reference, I return home to paint my images. These images are frequently licensed by Zoos and Aquariums. Inspiration is all around me even as I work. At the end of my studio I have a glass wall enclosing my own piece of rain forest, complete with waterfall and tropical plants in which poison dart frogs live and breed. I really do work far too hard, but if I was to retire today what would I do? Exactly what I am doing now.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT JODY BERGSMA Jody Bergsma has always felt a strong connection with nature. When she began having vivid dreams of animals as a child, her mother encouraged her to illustrate these visions. “This,” said Bergsma, “Was my first step toward life as a nature artist.” With her degree in Engineering and a self-proclaimed love for mathematics, Bergsma often views the world through a very unique lens that heavily influences her creative process. “I see geometry in everything,” she explained. “Mathematical forms are always swimming in my head and often find their way into my compositions.” Bergsma translates her personal worldview into beautiful illustrations of nature using watercolor as her primary medium, although she also enjoys painting with oils. According to Bergsma, her artwork delivers a core message of connectivity with the spirit of life present in all things, a deep appreciation for the beauty that exists in nature, and the desire to emphasize the power of the animal kingdom. Ultimately, Bergsma hopes that through her artistic expressions of nature, she can create order in an otherwise disorderly world. Bergsma currently resides in Bellingham, WA and enjoys many different activities in her spare time, including horseback riding, paddle boarding, skiing, running, and cooking. “Of course, I also enjoy painting my hobby art,” she added.

“Art is a tradition that helps us define who we are and also a vision of who we can become. My paintings are my personal expression and request for a more inclusive and peaceful world; A place where nature and humanity live in balance and harmony.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT MARK FREDRICKSON Mark Fredrickson is a thought provoking digital artist who began his career as a professional illustrator over 30 years ago, although his creative calling came at a very young age. “I knew at age 4 that I wanted to be an artist,” said Fredrickson. “I would draw and paint regularly and eventually pursued art into college.” His formal instruction led him to the world of graphic design where he worked while honing his painting skills with the goal of becoming a fine artist. While working as an illustrator and graphic artist for the Arizona Star Daily, Fredrickson realized his true passion was in illustration. Before discovering the digital realm, Fredrickson created his art with the airbrush. Before that, acrylics were his medium of choice. Now, Fredrickson creates his award-winning illustrations using Photoshop. “I literally paint with Photoshop as I would using an airbrush,” he explained. “Of course there are shortcuts with any digital medium that are impossible with an airbrush, and I take advantage of those, but the end result is very similar.” Fredrickson draws inspiration from many different aspects of his environment. He is influenced by other artists, particularly children’s book illustrators. “Some of the most beautiful art created today is found in children’s books,” said Fredrickson. He also gathers new! inspirations from family members whom have acted as models for many of Fredrickson’s original characters. Currently, Fredrickson resides in a log home near Lake Superior and enjoys the year round activities available to him as a result of living by the lake. “In my free time, I like to hike, kayak, and ski in the winter.” He joked, “And much of my time is spent doing a lot of yard work to keep the forest at bay.

ANNE STOKES Anne Stokes is a British fantasy artist who loves to use symbolism in her images to express emotion or sentiment. “Fantasy art,” she explains, “provides a great platform for depicting a wide range of subjects and themes.” A common motif in many of her pictures is strong female characters who are in control of their own destiny. This is familiar to Stokes, who as a little girl always loved to draw and make things, and was encouraged by her mother to explore her creativity. In her early career, Stokes created designs and commissions for merchandise and publishing companies, but as her career progressed she has been able to develop and license her own designs and concepts. “This amount of creative freedom is very rewarding,” said Stokes, who likes to sketch her ideas out in pencil before putting them onto a graphics tablet to achieve the intricacy of detail present in her art.

She added, “With art you can communicate without words. I feed an emotion into a picture and then someone looking at it gets one out. That is a really special thing to do.” For Stokes, creative inspiration comes in many forms. “England has a rich history, with wonderful medieval and gothic architecture that inspire my designs,” she said, “but I also find inspiration in nature and fantasy stories and film.” When Stokes is not creating, she enjoys spending time with her young son and two dogs. She is also an avid traveler who enjoys experiencing new cultures and exploring different environments.

DAVID PENFOUND David Penfound originates from Hampshire in the UK, and from an early age discovered a talent for art. Operation Hat Trick generates awareness and support for the recovery of wounded service members and veterans through the sale of OHT branded merchandise and donates to those organizations that fulfill OHT’s mission. These include Walter Reed National Medical Military Center, the Mission Continues, the Wounded Warrior Bonfire Project, The Travis Mills Foundation, Navy SEAL Foundation, Semper Fi Fund, Special Operations Warrior Foundation, VA Medical Center in Washington DC, Ironstone Farm, Project Sanctuary and UNH’s Northeast Passage. Founded at the University of New Hampshire, OHT is dedicated to Nate Hardy and Mike Koch, two Navy SEALS who were killed in Iraq in 2008. Through a partnership with The Mountain and participating collegiate institutions, pro and minor league teams, retailers and corporations, OHT is able to help those recovering from unthinkable injuries. To date 240 colleges, along with 70 Minor League Baseball teams, 16 NHL teams, and over 35 companies, have adopted OHT and actively support their mission.

The Mountain has a long history of giving back and acting locally to help build a stronger community. Both The Mountain and OHT have roots in New Hampshire and as such are a natural partnership. As pioneers of such a noble cause, OHT is an organization The Mountain is proud to support.
