The national basketball analyst Family Husband Frank; three sons Company/Position I am a national basketball analyst for ESPN, CBS, Raycom Sports, Fox Sports and the Big Ten Network. This is my 26th year on the air covering men’s and women’s college basketball. Philanthropy/Volunteer work My husband (Frank) and I are putting together a foundation: “Frankie and Friends. This foundation is the platform for our son Frankie to speak against bullying. Frankie is a ninth grade student at Wando and has been all over the country spreading the word about why it’s important to make good choices, treat everyone with respect and not use the “R word. We pledge to stop the R word by supporting www.r-word.org. Frankie has spoken at assemblies in Kansas (1,500 peers), St. John’s University in New York City (500 college students), Cario Middle School (460 peers) East Cary Middle School (600 peers) and Moultrie Middle School (Women in Charge Club) I serve on the Board of Directors for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. We raise money for research thru the Kay Yow Cancer Fund ($8 million since 2007) and I assist in selecting the annual induction class into the womens’ basketball hall of fame.

“...Work hard, don’t assume anything and enjoy each moment. Education I attended North Carolina State University graduating with a double major in Business Management and Economics. I have a masters degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University. How did you get to where you are today? I knew basketball would always be a part of my life but wasn’t sure if that path would be thru Sports Administration as an Athletic Director, a coach or a broadcaster. I knew I would be in the game because of my passion for basketball. After 26 years of working in TV, I can’t imagine being involved in another way at this moment. I carved my own path. In beginning of my career, there were not many opportunities for women in college basketball. The only game on TV was the national championship in the 80s. I worked, marketed and sold advertising to create my own TV broadcasting schedule early in

my career. Today, I average 80 college basketball games the last 12 years and I don’t have any home games, all my games are on the road. What is your life philosophy? My philosophy is: to get what you want, you have to help others get what they want. What inspires you? I’m inspired by my three boys and my husband to do the best I can each day while balancing family and career. Who is your mentor? One of my mentors was my college basketball coach at NC State and Naismith Hall of Famer, Kay Yow. She fought a 28 year battle with breast cancer. She inspired me to build, serve and maintain the right attitude so I will make the right choices in family and career. Best advice youhave ever been given? Some of the best advice I have been given is to work hard, don’t assume anything and enjoy each moment. What do you do to relax, hobbies? There isn’t much down time raising a family. There isn’t much downtime because of the demands of my job. That’s perfectly okay with me because there is much I have yet to accomplish. I love to play golf when I can find the time. Honestly, I’m not looking for extra time for me at this point in my life.

The director of planning and development Family Bobby (husband), sons John (13) and Luke (9) Company/ Position Town of Mount Pleasant/ Director of Planning and Development Philanthropy/ Volunteer MUSC Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House through Trident United Way; Day of Caring with fellow Town of Mount Pleasant employees. This year, we helped deliver meals with East Cooper Meals on Wheels. Education Bachelor’s Degree, the College of Charleston; Master of Public Administration, the University of Charleston, inducted as a member of Pi Alpha Alpha, the National Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration. Did you see yourself being where you are today? Why? I’ve always had an interest in working with people, especially in public service and government. When I first began the public administration program at the College of Charleston, I was not sure where it would lead, but working for the Town of Mount Pleasant was always a goal. Following graduation, I was incredibly lucky to be hired by the Mount Pleasant Planning Department. The Planning Department had a reputation for great planning, and I was very excited to become a part of that momentum. This job has provided me with opportunities to work with many great people in our community, as well as help create great places and good planning for Mount Pleasant. How did you get where you are today? I am where I am today professionally because of the great people that I get to work with every day. Of course, hard work, loyalty and dedication are a must, but I believe that you are only as good

“... Some of the best advice can be found in the stories and words shared by great American writers... as the people around you. For me, this starts with the Planning Department. The folks in both the Planning and Building Divisions are dedicated, hardworking, creative and have tremendous institutional knowledge. Working together, we have accomplished much. Most recently, we became the first municipality in the state to have an accredited Building Division and one of a few communities in the nation to possess that designation. I’ve also had tremendous support from town council and from our current Town Administrator, Eric DeMoura. The combination of team work and core values propelled me to where I am today. What is your life philosophy? Work hard. Be gracious. Be grateful and always, always remember to say thank you. What inspires you? My greatest inspiration comes from the two most important women in my life - my mother and my grandmother. Both have inspired me in different ways with their unique qualities and strengths. When my father passed away at a very young age, my mother was left to raise my brother and me (ages 1 and 4) on her own. She remarried later to a wonder-

ful man, but for many years she was on her own working full time as a teacher, earning a master’s degree and raising two children. As a working mother now, I wonder how she did it. She is a compassionate person and genuinely kind to everyone. My mother inspires me with her quiet strength, commitment and kindness. My grandmother was a very strong woman. She was the daughter of Dutch immigrants and grew up in Brooklyn during the Great Depression. She was a nurse in the Navy in World Was II and later helped found the first recovery room for Conway Hospital. She was part of what is truly the Greatest Generation. She always spoke her mind and was a woman of great determination and willpower. Both women have had a tremendous impact on the person I am today and the type of person I aspire to be.

Christiane Farrell

Name Christiane M. Farrell

Who is your mentor and why? I consider former Planning Director Joel Ford and former Town Administrator Mac Burdette to be my professional mentors. I had the privilege of working with them for 10 years, during which time I benefited tremendously from their institutional knowledge and work experience. They were both extremely dedicated to the Town of Mount Pleasant. Joel Ford had much to do with how well the town developed over the last 30 years. From him, I learned good planning and effective communication with citizens and developers. Mac Burdette taught me about effective leadership. His continued support and guidance provided me the tools needed to be successful. Best advice you have ever been given? I enjoy reading and I think that some of the best advice can be found in the stories and words shared by great American writers such as Harper Lee and Mark Twain. “To Kill a Mockingbird, my favorite book, is a classic story about morals from which so much can be learned. Mark Twain has many brilliant quotes and words to live by. Two of my favorites are: “If you tell the truth, you don’t have

to remember anything and “Keep away from people who belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great. What do you do to relax, hobbies? I love spending time with my family

and especially enjoying outdoor activities with them such as grilling out, going to the beach or enjoying sporting events together. I particularly enjoy running. I’ve had the same running partner for over eight years and we are gearing up for our fourth half-marathon this winter. I also enjoy crafting and home decorating.

The founder of Charleston Girl Name Kelly Gaskins Family cat: Bella Company/Position President/Founder Charleston Girl Philanthropy/Volunteer work I always try to give back to the community that has supported me whenever I can. I have had the opportunity to sponsor local softball teams and that has been an amazing experience. These teams would not be possible if it were not for the support of local sponsors so it is gratifying to be able to help. I also think it is very important to help those interested in business through mentoring and speaking engagements. Starting a business from scratch is wonderful but it can also be intimidating, so I am always open to help anyone who needs advice whether it be students, to relatives to complete strangers. At the end of October I will be volunteering my time to speak at Charleston Southern University discussing the adventures and challenges of launching a small business and making it successful. Personally, I am a huge animal lover and supporter of no kill efforts and I always donate quarterly to the Charleston Animal Society. I also attend many of their fundraising events. I adopted my cat Bella from the organization. The C.A.S is currently working to become a nokill shelter so it is now more important than ever to financially support this wonderful organization. I am an avid supporter of different charitable organizations through participation in different 5k runs. My favorites are the Dirty Girl 5k which supports the Bright Pink Foundation and the Boone Hall Running Scared 5k which supports the MUSC Children’s Hospital. As president of the Cales Family Reunion Commitee, I also volunteer a lot of my time annually to organizing my family’s reunion. I know this is not a charity but it is certainly a worthy cause to me. I never knew my grandfather (Carlie Cales) because he died unexpectedly in a tragic accident in 1983. Organizing this event really is therapeutic for me because I have learned so much about my grandfather and family in general that I would have never discovered otherwise. It is really uplifting to bring my family together in the spirit of community and honor our past. This year’s reunion on Oct. 5 saw 85 attendees.

“Believe you deserve success in your life. You really do, you know.” try’s foundation built on the American Dream. You have the freedom to start your own business, work hard and experience the success of your efforts. I am a testament to that. I also want to leave a positive legacy for my family. Who knows? a hundred years from now, my greatgreat-great grandchildren could be wearing my fragrance, Charleston Girl. Who is your mentor and why? that is a tough one. I would not say I have an active and official mentor but I do have a friend who has believed in me from the start. When others discouraged me and questioned why I wanted to launch a fragrace, this person told me to go for it and confirmed my belief that is was a great idea. I will never forget that moment sitting at the bar at T-Bone’s on Market discussing my business idea and thinking of names for the fragrance. That is honestly where the name Charleston Girl Perfume was first spoken. At every step of the process, that particular friend was always there to support me. It is so important to surround yourself with positive people who support you.

Best advice you have ever been given? Believe you deserve success in your life. You really do, you know. Don’t give in to negative “self talk.” You may think you really don’t deserve to succeed in business. You just aren’t “that type.” It’s important that you believe you are deserving. What do you do to relax, hobbies? For relaxtion, I love to travel. I just returned from a roadtrip from Charleston to San Antonio. It was a great experience and I really enjoyed the pit stops along the way, especially in New Orleans. I love meeting unique characters on these trips because these people are really what make life interesting. A hobby of mine is also collecting pressed pennies; probably dorky but they are a fun reminder of where I’ve been. Another hobby of mine is Zumba Fitness. Did you know? The ratio of women to men decreases as the population ages. According to the book, “Gender Gap: The Biology of MaleFemale Differences” by David Barash and Judith Eve Lipton, worldwide there are approximately 107 baby boys born for every 100 baby girls. But all human embryos actually start out as females for the first six weeks of life. After that sixth week of development, if the embryo is male, a certain gene on the Y chromosome will begin to produce androgens that encourage the development of male characteristics. Men have a life expectancy of 64.52 years, as compared to a life expectancy of 68.76 for women, says information from The Harvard Medical School. Also, male babies are 25 percent more likely to die in infancy than female babies.

Exploring careers in philanthropy The growing number of nonprofit organizations and other philanthropic groups has made opportunities for careers in philanthropy more plentiful. Those with profes sional business experience or even students right out of col lege often find opportunities within organizations geared to giving back. According to Indiana Uni versityPurdue University Indianapolis, there are more than 1.4 million nonprofit organizations in the United States alone. These organi zations need dedicated staff to run their operations, and employees of such nonprofits often find there are several advantages to working for charitable organizations. !" #$%%&'(" )*(+" ',-&(*, ments: Working in philan thropy means improving other people’s lives. Address your money concerns and take control of your finances The roles played by women have changed dramatically over the years. Modern wom en now wear many hats, one of which is money manager. That’s true for women man aging their personal finances or those overseeing their fam ily’s finances. But managing finances can be intimidating for anyone, regardless of gender. Often times, a careful assessment of your attitude toward money is a great way to make the process of managing your finances a lot less stressful. A great first step when managing your finances is to identify any concerns you have about money. Being able to pinpoint the particulars will help you develop a plan of action. For example, if you want to invest in stocks but don’t know a bull from a bear market, acknowledging this shortcoming can help you learn the necessary facts to get started. Once such concerns have been addressed, you’re likely to feel more comfortable and confident about managing your money and can start tak ing steps to do just that. !"#$%&'"()*%+%,-./"0&1",0.2-" your strengths. Learn about the woman behind the ‘cure’ Thousands upon thousands of women have battled breast cancer. Some have pulled through the disease, while others succumbed to the dis ease after a brave fight. Few people who have waged war with breast cancer are better known than Susan Komen, a name many instantly as sociate with the organization Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the most widely known, larg est and wellfunded breast cancer organization in the United States. Susan G. Komen was born Susan Goodman in 1943 in Peoria, Ill. According to her sister, Nancy, Susan was the high school homecoming queen and a college beauty queen. After graduating from college, Goodman returned to her hometown and pursued modeling, eventually marry ing her high school sweet heart, Stan. Komen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1977 after finding a lump that subse quent testing revealed was cancerous. Komen under went a procedure called a subcutaneous mastectomy, in which the outside of the breast tissue was left intact, but the interior breast tissue

was removed. The doctor who did the procedure assured Komen that she was cured. Despite urging her sister to get a second opinion, Komen was convinced she was safe. But within six months Ko men found another lump under her arm, and, by this point, it was evident that the cancer had spread. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic soon deter mined the cancer had metas tasized to her lung and under her arm. Komen underwent several different treatments to slow the progression of the can cer, including radiation and intense chemotherapy. How ever, the cancer continued to spread and eventually her body developed a resistance to most of the medication. During treatment, Komen repeatedly spoke with her sister about her wish to make the entire breast cancer expe rience and treatments in the hospital more palatable for women, including improv ing the appearance of waiting rooms and treatment centers, and doing other things to help comfort those who would find themselves in similar situ ations in the future. Komen lost her battle with breast

cancer in 1980 at age 36. By the time of her death, Ko men had undergone nine op erations and three courses of chemotherapy and radiation. Nancy Goodman Brinker then made it her mission to do everything she could to help end breast cancer and increase awareness of this potentially deadly disease. In 1982, Brinker established the Susan G. Komen Breast Can cer Foundation in her sister’s memory. Since its inception, the organization, now called PHOTO BY METRO CREATIVE Susan G.
