Are you game to help? By Lachlan Ellis
Mentees from the ages of 12 to 24 are needed to help increase female participation in sport, and a range of incentives are on offer, including free training. The She’s Game Program is recruiting mentees who live or play sport in Moorabool, teaming them up with mentors to uncover what role they can play in community leadership. The program is being delivered by Western Health, with Moorabool Shire Council partnering up to promote the program. The Mentorship Programs aim to highlight the importance of local sporting clubs in broadening opportunities for women and girls, recognising their contributions, and increasing their participation. Trinity Gathercole is a Health Promotion Officer at Western Health, and said after the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on local sport, now was a crucial time to support female sport. “This Program has been on hold for 12 months due to the various impacts COVID-19 has had on local sport. I believe now, more than ever, getting active and giving back to our local sporting club communities is paramount,” she told the Moorabool News. “In addition to the training involved in the mentor programs, the mentees will be interviewed and featured on a poster campaign to highlight their success stories, and influence others in sport. All Mentor Groups will be invited to a formal graduation ceremony later in the year to launch this campaign, and share their experiences throughout the program.” Ms Gathercole said the Mentor Programs will go beyond promoting sport participation based on gender alone, but also for other specific groups that may be reluctant to take part in sport. “The Mentor Programs will be individually designed with each mentor and their mentees to determine what they can do as individuals to help empower and encourage women and girls in sport. We will work together to identify any current barriers within local sporting clubs in regards to female participation, or highlight what could be improved,” she said. The Mentor Groups will work towards a collective end goal where everyone feels safe and confident to play, regardless of their age, race, gender or ability. Applications close on Sunday 10 July.
