Thank you for a fabulous read, week after week. It's amazing how you keep coming up with such interesting new topics. I'm responding to Sara Goldstein's column regarding hosting children for yom tov! She is a riot with how she hits the nail on its head. I found the article hysterical, and I really related to what she wrote. I'd like to share an idea that my mother-in-law uses for any items left behind... U.S. Postal Service does a great job returning items to their rightful owners. Be it a sock or bib, whatever it may be, usually by Tuesday following a Shabbos stay, it's to be expected in my mailbox. So whoever would like to have the clutter out of the way, perhaps this suggestion may work well for you, unless it's a suit — or an entire suitcase — that stayed behind. S.M.

DEAR RORIE, I am one of the woman who attended the event this last Sunday. I have struggled with my weight most of my life and I have tried every diet known to mankind. I always lose weight but when I reach or get close to my goal I always end up gaining it back and usually more. I heard you speak this past Sunday at the Supreme Health event. When you shared about a way of making peace with your food and body, as you called it, and actually stop dieting, I was blown away. I was listening in on that group of woman you were speaking to after your talk and one woman said she doesn't have an “off button,” and you M&S SHOE REPAIR

I came home and told my sister about you. We both want to learn how to stop dieting and learn how to tune inward, like you said. Please let me know how I can set up an appointment with you or join one of your groups you mentioned. Thank you very for giving me hope. S.B RORIE WEISBERG RESPONDS: Thank you for reaching out. It was really nice meeting you at the symposium and I greatly enjoyed the event and the appointment with the doctor! Unfortunately, due to heavy traffic I ended up missing your speech. (Quite disappointing! I am still really interested in hearing it... Is there a recording of the event?) It was unbelievable and heart-wrenching to see how many people are suffering and the severity of their situations. Had I not known the info you shared with me, I am shuddering to think if my son wouldn't look the same a few years down the road.. Thank you so much again! It's truly a huge zechus you have! May we only hear besuros tovos. A Mother of Child with TSW

Thank you so much for organizing this whole event! It was so comforting for the doctor to tell me that my son does not have such bad TSW and my husband, who does have it badly, will take a while — but we will get there one day! Thanks again. P.S. if the recording went as planned I would like a copy as I was out when the last two speakers presented while I was waiting for the doctor! C.S. RUCHY REESE RESPONDS: We hope that the recording will be available shortly. There are some technical difficulties, but I hope the backup device worked! Please contact me in a week to see if it worked out.

EDITOR’S BULLETIN: Last week’s article about the incidents that Chaverim handled during Pesach mistakenly mentioned that they occurred on Chol Hamoed. Incidents occurred during Yom Tov, as well as on Chol Hamoed.

OWN WORDS

#34

Every week, we share a sliver of many of the appreciative messages we receive. This week, we share with you the story in its entirety, per protagonist’s request – so that the impact of his yeshua can inspire others. Read on, and hear his story in his own words…

Hi. It was only last week that I called in my request to Kollel Chatzos, and I'm already a 'geholfener'. It was about a week ago that I gave up my office job for several reasons, including certain ruchniyus problems. Although I was confident in my decision to leave the job because I felt it is the ratzon haBorei, I also called up the Kollel Chatzos office that very day and was menadev a

substantial donation l’zchus that I should find a good 'ehrliche' job. It was only two days afterwards that that someone called me up and offered me a great position in a very busy office. It was a wellpaying business and a very ehrliche environment as well. So, I would like to ask you to please publicize my story, so that people should know the koach of supporting a talmid chacham learning in the holy hours of fartugs.

JACKETS ARE COMING OFF, spring is in the air, and health and weight loss are on the mind. Study after study has proven that the only way to achieve long-term health is through the combination of diet and exercise. While dieting alone will help you shed most of your unwanted pounds, the benefits of exercise are even more far-reaching. In addition to burning calories, exercise boosts the metabolism, elevates your mood, keeps you in shape, and is proven to extend your life. The two main types of exercise are cardio (also known as aerobic exercise), and strength training. Cardio is short for cardiovascular exercise, which refers to endurance exercise that strengthens your body's circulatory system, i.e. the heart and blood vessels. Not only does strength training aid in shedding pounds, it helps maintain that weight loss as well. A recent study found that women who followed a weight-training routine three times a week increased the amount of calories burned in normal daily activity (in addition to those burned during exercise), helping them to maintain their current weight. Imagine : Free calorie burning — even after you finish your workout!

Strength training makes you stronger and fitter. Strength training is also called resistance training because it involves strengthening and toning your muscles by contracting them against a resisting force. When strength training, your muscles need time to recover, so it should only be done on alternate days. Bit by bit you will find that you can add more weight or resisting force. Strength training plays a role in disease prevention. Studies have documented the many wellness benefits of strength training. If you have arthritis, strength training can be as effective as medication in decreasing arthritis pain. Strength training can help women increase their bone density and reduce the risk of bone fractures. And for the 14 million Americans with Type 2 diabetes, strength training along with other healthy lifestyle changes can help improve glucose control. Strength training boosts energy levels and improves your mood. Strength training will elevate your level of endorphins (natural opiates produced by the brain), which will make you feel great. As if that isn't enough to convince you, strength training has also been shown to be a great antidepressant, to help you sleep better, and to improve your overall quality of life. Cardio exercises and strength training have different advantages. Finding the proper balance between the two is the best thing you can do for your body. Cardio burns fat, while lifting weights builds and tones muscle; the combination of the two is what is going to help you reach your health and weight-loss goals. Now that yom tov is over and the weather is nice, there is no better to time to start a new exercise routine. The key to success with any new exercise program is to do something you enjoy and to do it consistently. Join a gym, buy some sneakers, call a friend, or do whatever it takes to make your health and weight loss a priority!

38 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 26, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

If you are overweight or have medical conditions, it is a good idea to have a checkup before starting a new workout routine. Here are some tips to stay safe and injury-free: 1. Be aware of your body. Think about how the particular exercise is making you feel. If something doesn’t feel right, stop immediately and seek medical advice. 2. Warm up and cool down. Try slow stretches and go through the motions of your sport or activity before starting. Cool down with slow stretching. 3. Pace yourself. Have at least one recovery day each week to rest. If you are experiencing pain, rest until the pain has gone. 4. Stay hydrated. Drink water before, during and after a session. 5. Be aware of the weather. Take it easier in hot weather so you don’t overheat. 6. Do it right. Try to get the technique right from the beginning, to ensure you are using your muscles correctly. A few sessions with a personal trainer might be worth your while, to make sure you are working out correctly and getting the most out of each workout. 7. Check your gear. Make sure your shoes and equipment fit properly and are right for the activity. 8. Be safe. Take a friend, stick to well-lit areas and wear bright or light-reflective clothing so drivers can see you.

Now a new study has found you can do exactly that simply by taking a hot bath or sitting in a sauna. In fact, a soak in the tub burns an average 126 calories an hour — the equivalent to taking a 25- to 30-minute walk. While the calorie burn is not significant, the study is exciting as it opens the door to more studies about “passive heating.” It is believed passive heating, such as a bath, increases the rate people burn calories. Dr. Steve Faulkner, and the team at Loughborough and Leicester Universities, made the surprising discovery when they were investigating alternatives to exercise for controlling Type 2 diabetes. In the study, they compared having a hot bath to the same period of time spent cycling and discovered the less strenuous activity had some surprising benefits. They found spending an hour in the bath was more effective at lowering blood sugar levels than cycling. The amount our blood sugar rises after a meal is one of the risk markers for things like developing Type 2 diabetes, so keeping it down can be good for our health. While more studies are needed to prove the efficacy of passive heating, the combination of burning calories and lowering glucose levels makes taking a long soak in the tub or sitting in the sauna a no-brainer!

East Ramapo Budget Rescinded by State Schools Commissioner (The Journal News) JUST TWO DAYS after the 2017–2018 East Ramapo school budget was approved by the state, Education Commissioner Maryellen Elia has reversed that decision after discovering that five additional days of transportation for private school students had been included in the budget. The proposed $231 million budget included $135,000 in transportation costs to the district for five days when public schools were closed but private schools were still in session. Elia said that the budget she approved on April 19th did not include the non-mandated transportation costs that appeared in the final version of the budget, but in a letter written to Elia, school board president Yehuda Weissmandl noted that

the five days of transportation were included in the budget, but without specific details explaining the transportation costs. Weissmandl said that he had received commitments from schools superintendent Deborah Wortham about finding ways to restore at least some of the 14 days of non-mandated transportation which were cut from the East Ramapo budget in 2011. That cut in funding “has caused a great health and safety concern,” reported Weissmandl. The East Ramapo School Board has until April 28th to resubmit a budget plan for Elia’s approval.

Bear Season Arrives in Ramapo (Ramapo Police Department) AH, SPRING. The crocuses are gone, the daffodils are in full bloom and the tulips have just begun poking their leaves through the soil. And with the warmer weather and the gorgeous foliage come the bears, waking up from their winterlong slumber and looking for your leftovers to eat. The Ramapo Police Department is advising all area residents to be on the alert for furry foragers, one of whom has

already been spotted in the Village of Montebello picking through a garbage can and trapping the terrified homeowners inside their house. Bear sightings have become far more common in Ramapo in recent years and residents are advised never to leave any food outside and to keep garbage cans tightly closed, preferably in a sturdy building such as a garage or a shed whenever possible.

Chaverim Enlists New Hikers (Monsey.com) FOURTEEN NEW HIKERS have joined Chaverim of Rockland’s hiking group, starting their first weekly training session at Kakiat Park with a two mile pre-Pesach hike. Chaverim of Rockland were pressed into service last Pesach when a group of six young men from New Square got lost in Kakiat Park. With its abundance of parkland and forests, Rockland County draws hikers from all around, and those unfamiliar with the territory can find themselves get-

ting lost, making search and rescue groups an essential part of Chaverim’s operations. The new recruits will participate in several three-hour long hikes, be trained in the use of various equipment and will also take part in classroom instruction that will address challenges including map reading, fluctuating temperatures, uneven and steep terrain, rain and darkness.

Many emotions played in Bianca’s heart, most of them running like scurrying mice across her mind so fast she couldn’t catch them with words, almost doubting they were there. But they were there, of course they were. Still no sign of offspring, and the silence in her house had gotten so unbearable she was afraid of what might break it. Henya knew nothing of how lucky she was, to have a home, a husband and a child — and a future so unknown it could be filled with the best of fantasies. Henya’s news about the new house, and her confidences thereafter, left Bianca feeling both protective and included, and not about to give up their special bond. Her own husband, who had given Yosef Yitzchok his first job as diamond polisher — without Yosef Yitzchok ever finding out who’d pulled strings for him — had no reason or need to move from the city. But wasn’t it sweet that Henya’s husband did, and that he was begging her to join? Always, the one who Then again, Henya was a young mother with nobody by her side. And without her clear need, Bianca would be nothing, a mannequin, dress wants it sees it in the pinched behind her in pins, wavering at near topple above everyone else. Even though Bianca gave her friend her blessings, she still would have hoped that Henya would listen to her advice, put down her foot, and just stay. Henya didn’t want to go, that much Bianca knew and understood at a level that made her feel afraid for Henya, and angry, too. Like a mother watching her child run into the gutter, Bianca imagined for herself, though she told herself with self-crimination that she had no way of knowing this, having never experienced it. “With the husband across seas and oceans,” Blima, a mutual friend, defended Henya. Blima’s husband muttered only monosyllables in the best of conversations and she often wished he’d tell her what to do, take charge

a bit, release her from her perpetual loneliness. Of course she’d heed his direction. It wasn’t to be. Blima did the talking, even the deciding, in her home, so she could afford to defend Henya. Even in the face of Bianca’s loving disparagement. “It’s far. Very far.” Disapproval and wistfulness, two very different vapors, mingled, then mixed in the air. “Yes. We’ll never see her. She’ll say she’ll visit, but in reality, a different life.” Blima picked up a white rattle from the ground and handed it back to Sura’s baby. “I hope she gets used to it.” “I hope she doesn’t,” Bianca said. There was kindness in there, too, amid the evilness, the evil a cloak she was forced to wear when… oh, but it was better not to return to the memories of the camp, and she shuddered back to the present, but could only see it through a faraway glaze. She would have enjoyed moving. In her mind, she would have been up every day at dawn, catching the neon sky before it mellowed. She would have donned her sunhat and untied her boat, pushing it away from the dock. In the nothingness of her surroundings, she would have relaxed, allowed her shoes to get wet, maybe, or even muddied. Maybe... the world would fill her up, maybe. But it wasn’t to be. Always, the one who wants it sees it in the hands of a person who wants to throw it away. “I HATE THIS PLACE,” Henya said. The room echoed back at her, large and cavernous, with too many rooms and big leaves like webbed duck feet swiping against the windows — so many windows — in the pronounced wind. Yosef Yitzchok’s eyes were wounded for a split second, that slap she gave all his work. But he quickly recovered, blinked, wiped it away, braced his wide shoulders upright. “I can make you happy here,” he said. The way his voice was low, the effort he made in covering up his hurt — it made her swirl around and look at him. Really. For the first time. She saw… she couldn’t tell afterward what it was she had seen. But in that moment she experienced it

Energy Bars

By Leah Stern

Energy bars have stormed the kosher food market in many flavors and varieties. They are great to have at hand in our fast-paced lifestyle, which doesn’t always allow for organized meals. Although I strongly encourage and try to enforce wholesome breakfast habits, it doesn’t always happen, especially with teenagers around. These homemade bars have all the nutritious benefits of the storebought ones without added preservatives and other unidentifiable ingredients which don’t belong in our pantries. They are simple to make and can easily be adjusted and customized according to preferences; just substitute any dry ingredient with another dry ingredient of the same quantity. Sweeteners can be interchanged, using the listed amount of honey, simple syrup or corn syrup. April 26, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 55 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

PERPLEXED??? By : Kriendy Cohen FAIGY WAS COUNTING the days to her siddur play. She just couldn’t wait! Finally, she will be that BIG girl. Mommy and the rest of the family shared in her excitement. As the day drew closer, Faigy started to experience some pain in her chest. She was coughing non-stop. Her pediatrician diagnosed her with pneumonia and prescribed some antibiotic. It didn’t help. Her cough was very persistent and worsened with each passing day. Then she spiked a fever. Meds were administered, antibiotics changed, but little Faigy didn’t feel any better. As she grew more pale and weak, Faigy was rushed to the Emergency Room by some devoted Hatzalah men. The speedy ride with lights and sirens that would interest any six-year-old, only made her feel nauseous and miserable. In the hospital, after a battery of tests, the unthinkable was determined: poor little Faigy was diagnosed with ALL. She was a cancer patient! Her parents were beside themselves. They couldn’t possibly comprehend what was going on. Grown up adults, successful people were just standing by their child’s bedside in tears. Soon they were transferred to the pediatric ICU where the medical team was trying their best for a course of healing. Amidst all of that, a sweet, warmlooking woman appeared. Laden with bags of yummy food, toys and her signature smile, Frumy Horowitz introduced herself. She assured the distraught parents that indeed this is a tough journey, but they will b’ezras Hashem emerge from it triumphantly. She offered Mommy a warm hug along with some much-

needed chizuk. Her presence immediately put the family at ease. That was the beginning of a relationship that spanned many months and a couple of states where Faigy traveled for optimal medical care. The Bein Ish family would somehow always know to arrive in the most crucial times offering advice,

gifts a n d anything that was needed. They provided hotel accommodations during extended hospital stays, Shabbos retreats when needed, took the family for shopping therapy and so much more! When the day of the siddur play arrived, a hook-up was set up in the ICU room, with a huge screen where Faigy and her family could partake in the celebration. Frumy came with a huge, beautifully wrapped gift, a full musical band with entertainment, and they threw the most magnificent party ever to take place on hospital premises. When bald, sick little Faigy was finally discharged after three long months being inpatient, she had a pleasant surprise. The house was

decorated with posters and balloons. A huge cake and her favorite treats were set at the table. The house was sparkling clean and smelling, oh, so fresh. All arranged by the wonderful Frumy and her Bein Ish staff. The siblings were all happy and content. They had not abandoned during this time. Bein Ish made sure that all their needs were met. Bein Ish provides emotional and financial assistance to families stricken with life-threatening illness. They provide support in the most significant times and appear like angels from Heaven. Frumy is there to hold hands and hearts. She is a rock of support to patients and their families. With her resourceful and giving personality Frumy will turn any dire situation from bleak to blossoming! Dear friends, there is only one way Bein Ish can continue with their awesome projects: with “your” financial support. Your donation enables them to continue to bring smiles and giggles to those who have forgotten the sound of laughter. It brings a breath of fresh air to those suffocating beneath the load of disease. Your help enables Bein Ish to extend so much to those in need, far greater than the text of this description. Money cannot buy life; yet it can enhance the quality of life in innumerable angles. May the Almighty bless you and your loved ones with continued health and prosperity. May you never witness the sheer pain that Bein Ish recipients deal with daily. May only good and sweet sounds fill your home and heart!

Malkie Knopfler

Malkie leads a women’s group for Zumba-style exercise.

What is Zumba?

The concept of Zumba is to move to music. It’s not relaxing like yoga or slower-paced forms of exercise; it is 100% fun, and gives you an amazing cardio workout. Does one need specific talent, training or coordination to be able to participate in a Zumba-like group?

What resonates with you? Rapid tempo in an air charged with energy? Graceful calisthenics and a soothing jingle? Rhythmic and circuitous steps? Deft maneuvers in a focused atmosphere? No matter, as long as you’re moving! Join Monsey fitness, gymnastics and dance instructors in exploring the tones and beats of kosher exercise options.

Not at all! In high school, I was known as the biggest klutz. I was always the funny one who nobody would expect to be doing physical exercise or participate in dances or the like. Laughter has great benefits and it’s extremely important for healthy living, but let’s face it: It doesn’t burn enough calories! Zumba does have physical benefits and doing it regularly adds to quality of life. It is enjoyable, fun, and it gives the participants the positive energy and the adrenaline boost that any type of cardio exercise provides. So does one need talent? Training? Coordination? Absolutely not; nobody would have dreamed that I would derive such enjoyment from a good Zumba workout. How long have you been in the line?

I’ve been teaching Zumba for around two years, and I’ve been doing Zumba for close to seven years. Before I moved to Monsey, I ran what we called the Savta Simcha Dance Club in Boro Park. It was our own private chesed organization where we would go to senior homes and practice Zumba therapy with the women who were, for the most part, immobile. It was all about getting them to move. We tried to incorporate whichever movements were possible according to their abilities. Often it was hand move-

ments, swaying, and using different props to make them excited and motivated. The energy was great and we all had a good time. Which age group is Zumba geared for?

The concept of Zumba is amazing for almost anyone. I have a two-year-old niece who follows along with our weekly groups in her own way! Any young kid who grasps directions can participate in Zumba, and there’s no age limit, as proven by our Savta Simcha Dance Club, where it was beneficial for even wheelchair-bound seniors.

customize your Zumba moves according to the areas in your body that need tightening. Zumba gives you a rush of energy — you’re really moving! — and a fun outlet. What classes do you run?

Currently, there’s one adult group running once a week, but since I’ve received a lot of interest from teenagers, I would love to work on a class in the future customized for teens. Is there anything you’d like to add?

I’d like to thank my sister for allowing us to use her basement for our Zumba group.

What are the benefits of Zumba?

Perry Samuel Dance Instructor at Confidance

What made you go into this line?

What services do you offer?

I’m passionate about dancing and music, and I wanted to use my talent to help girls shine. And shine they do. Girls really gain confidence and selfassurance in our classes. It builds them in every way; aiding coordination, balance and posture, while also giving them an enjoyable heimishe outlet, which gives them a sense of accomplishment that spills over to all areas of their lives. Running these classes puts me in a position to spread simcha to so many girls, while providing them with a way to keep them fit without the strenuous exercise.

We offer a variety of classes in different settings. We cater to groups in schools, camps and bungalow colonies, private classes in our facilities, and one-onone sessions. We offer dance classes, ballet, gymnastics and other areas of creativity with experienced teachers. We specialize in all things musical and dance-related. Families even arrange their private groups before weddings to practice and learn the latest dance steps.

So all your services serve the same goal?

Exactly — build the girls’ self-esteem and give them a chance to grow in a positive, heimishe environment. This is something that they take along with them for life. In addition to the skills they gain, they have the pride of belonging, in succeeding. Confidance members are proud of their identity with their bags, sports bottles boasting the logo of this unique group. And as is the happy nature of music, it brings a simcha to everyone!

How many people are on your staff?

Between six and eight at a given time. They each bring dedication to their work and form a personal connection with our members. Can you share with us about some of your unique programs?

I had the privilege to run the dance for Chesed 24/7’s annual performance, Night of the Stars, and it was an amazing experience. The girls’ satisfaction and pride as they blossomed and shone in their roles was very rewarding.

THE MONSEY VIEW / 63

How many years have you been in this field?

I’ve actively instructed dance for the past decade, but I’ve been into dancing practically all my life. What is your favorite part of your job?

I love to see people happy. Out of all the jobs and professions out there, I feel fortunate that mine is one that puts smiles on peoples’ faces. Who is your program geared to?

Just about anyone from ages five and up. We organize individual groups for each age, and original dances customized according to their age level and group level. There are 250 children enrolled per year, and they tell us that they feel like each gets her individual attention. Can you tell us about the performance with which you culminate the year?

At the end of the season we organize a recital, in which the girls perform the skills they learned: ballet, gymnastics and dancing. The girls invite their family and friends, who come to enjoy the skills and professionalism and to tap into the joy. The mothers are blown away at the skills and synchronization that their girls show. It’s a huge project to coordinate, but seeing the families bask in the nachas of our members makes it all worth it. We work with their preferences so that each girl gets to shine where she’s most confident in. After all, it’s all about...Confidance!

Chaim Moore

Boxing/Fitness/Wellness Coach, Kosher Boxing

Do you use boxing as a sport or an exercise?

Unlike typical self-defense classes — which are usually very technique focused, leaving little time for actual calorie burn — we’re using the sport in the form of fast-paced exercise with a focus on fitness and muscle toning; a 1-hour class can burn more than 800 calories, one of the highest forms of training in terms of calories burned. Does one need special training or skills to join your boxing classes?

We have people joining on every level. We focus on one or two techniques per class, and then incorporate it into that day’s workout. This structure encourages each participant to apply the new technique on his own level. The classes are small, so I can guide each person according to his pace. What made you establish the first kosher boxing club?

When I moved to Monsey, I was encouraged by a prominent rav that endorses my work, to bring this service to the frum community. With my training, I was in the unique position to provide frum men with a good kosher workout environment with appropriate music, and only male instructors and participants. Our group takes on a sense of community and great friendships have been formed in our classes. What benefits does boxing have?

As a teenager, boxing helped me with motivation, focus and discipline. In addition to obvious benefits like fitness, weight loss and self-defense, teaching boxing also puts me in a position to connect with participants and coach them on matters outside the gym. It doesn’t end at the techniques or the workout; I develop personal relationships, especially with my younger students, and they feel comfortable approaching me for guidance. I find boxing effective on so many fronts; it starts with the commitment to boxing that comes with a sense of responsibility, and along with a growth-oriented environment it builds confidence, releases stress, and it’s only upward from there. A wife reported to me how her husband is much less

Which classes do you offer?

Since scheduling is difficult around the full-time job I hold, classes are currently limited to men and teenage boys only. The youngest member is 15 years old, but most of our members are 18 years or older. In the future, I hope to organize groups for women, and children. I also do some private sessions where I teach self-defense to younger students, and work with older clients who require a slower pace than the group classes. What gear do you use in your gym?

We use full boxing gear; such as hand wraps and boxing gloves. During the class we hit punch bags, handheld focus mitts, and even a speed bag. We also

I trained in England for two years in kickboxing, and then in Israel for an additional five years in boxing. Once in the USA I received certification from the Boxing Fitness Institute, combining my knowledge of fitness and boxing. My combined experience in boxing and kickboxing allow me to incorporate kickboxing into the regular boxing program for a lower body workout. This includes kicks, knees and elbows which are also very effective in self-defense situations. How long have you been teaching boxing?

It’s been just over three years now that I’ve been teaching boxing in the Monsey area.

Faigy Wasserman Kangoo Jumps Instructor at Fun-n-Fit

What is Kangoo?

Kangoo Jumps — rebound shoes — were originally developed to reduce impact stress on joggers’ joints. It was redesigned in the 1990s to improve comfort and optimize performance, and a little while later became popular in the fitness world. It is considered the world's lowest impact athletic shoe today. It reduces 80% of the impact on joints, making it easier to jump and work out than in conventional shoes. What are some benefits of Kangoo jumps?

As mentioned above, it reduces impact on joints. This exercise is great for weight loss, burning 25–50% more calories than a typical aerobics class. It improves posture, balance and coordination. It reduces mental stress, enhances the mood and stimulates lymphatic drainage. Its numerous benefits aside, what makes this workout so attractive, and makes people come back again and again is that it’s fun! When doing Kangoo, participants feel that they are exercising for free, not realizing how many calories are being burned while having such a good time. What made you go into this line?

Five years ago, when I was living in Brooklyn, I researched different exercise classes. That was when I discovered Kango, and decided to try it. I was hooked from the first class; I loved the experience! It was really different than any other aerobics class I’d taken before. I’ve always been a gym girl, and over the years, I’ve joined a variety of exercise classes, as I knew it was important for my mind and body. I can’t say I enjoyed them all, but I loved

the results. It was when I tried Kangoo that realized that, “Hey, this can really be fun!” Suddenly, I wasn’t looking at my watch to see when the class would be over; I only wanted another song, another round. Besides for being such fun, it was so easy on my joints. It really put me on a high and gave me energy all day long. Later, I moved to Monsey and I was disappointed that there were no Kangoo classes offered here. I really missed it, so I decided to create my own classes, enabling me to enjoy the experience in Monsey, too. I formed my own company, called Fun-n-Fit. I became certified as a Group Fitness Trainer, as well as licensed Kangoo Dance Instructor. Today, I’m happy to share this amazing and enjoyable experience with others. From the start, the feedback was great. People loved it; they found Kangoo addictive and therapeutic and it’s an exercise they look forward to. What age group is Kangoo gear toward?

Kangoo is geared for all ages and fitness levels. I even jump with bubbies — I recently did Kangoo with an 80-year-old woman, on her birthday! What kind of classes do you offer?

I offer weekly morning and evening classes for women and weekly evening classes for high school girls. During the winter, I run a popular Sunday program for girls in 5th through 8th grade. I love

seeing the young kids working up a sweat. They really move! It is a great exercise for kids who need to lose a little weight whose mothers want to give them the opportunity in a fun, stress-free way. I also do specialized groups and adapt and modify the program accordingly. People call me for private groups and events, for family, birthdays, for stress relief or just because. I frequently travel to do large events, such as in schools and camps, at Shabbatons and women's retreats and overnights, and there, I accommodate groups of about a hundred people at a time. The energy is electrifying, with so many people at once. At women’s retreats, women often come into the room and after seeing the intimidating shoes, insist that they will not participate; they’re “only here to watch.” The music turns on, and suddenly they’re looking for a pair of Kangoo Shoes, and before you know it, they’re in the air. I see time and again: Women who wouldn't consider joining Kangoo classes, try it once on occasion and then join me privately for more. Your job seems to be loads of fun! What do you enjoy the most?

I love what I’m doing. I’ve been doing it for three years now, and I never get bored. I have immense pleasure watching people doing Kangoo for the first time, seeing their smiles and asking for just one more song, not wanting it to end. What do I like most about my job? I get to see people in the best of spirits!

Malky Blum Director of GymPros

Can you a tell us a little about GymPros?

GymPros is a gymnastics program for kids in our community. Here, kids learn a wide range of skills beginning with the more common handstands, cartwheels and backbends, and then they advance to more exciting and daring skills like roundoff back handsprings, kips on bars, etc., which require dedication, training and lots of practice. Gymnastics increase strength, flexibility and balance. We have classes for children as young as preschool age, as well as recreational classes for children of all ages. We also have a highly successful competitive team

that is part of the JGL (Jewish Gymnastics League). How long have you been providing gymnastics training?

It's hard to believe but we are currently finishing our fifth year B”H. We started out in my parents’ dining room and slowly built our way up to where we are today. We didn’t really have any other frum program to emulate, so we had to build it brick by brick. It has been a wonderful ride.

What does a child gain by learning gymnastics?

In my experience, gymnastics is the most fun form of exercise for kids, since it's viewed and practiced as a “sport” and a “hobby” as opposed to a “workout regimen” or “exercise class,” — even though they're working just as hard (or harder!) than in an average exercise program. They also enhance their strength, agility and coordination. Emotionally, too, children gain tremendously from the dedication gymnastics requires, and the satisfaction they gain from the sport. A gymnast needs to be dedicated, and eat right, sleep right, practice and learn to not give up. Only then can she realize the true benefits of this amazing sport. (Shout-out to all our amazing GymPros who work hard and practice every single week, refusing to give up even when it's hard. Your coaches and I are impressed by your effort and proud of your accomplishments!) How did you started with gymnastics?

Growing up, I enjoyed gymnastics, contortion and similar activities. I wanted to get professional training but there were no professional frum training programs. I had to train by myself with one-on-one coaching. I told myself that if I ever have the opportunity, I will provide frum girls the opportunity I didn't have. When I started out, I had no idea that the demand would be so high, but I had a hunch that people would be excited to join. Who is GymPros for?

GymPros is for any child who is willing to put in the time and effort needed for this wonderful sport. Some kids might never be able to reach a very high level but I've yet to meet anyone doesn’t enjoy them-

selves and grow if they are committed to gymnastics. I will also add that I've been surprised many times by kids who seemed, at first, as if they have very little potential, but turned out to vastly exceed all expectations. Some have even gone on to join our competitive team! What classes and services does GymPros offer?

We have programs for each age and ability, whether for a beginner hobbyist or for professional training. Our instructors are USA Gymnastics certified instructors, and we modify the curriculum according to what people are looking for in a program. What type of equipment is needed for gymnastics?

Well, there are three types of training: Floor, bars and beams. For floor gymnastics (often referred to as tumbling) which includes cartwheels, handsprings and similar skills, we have a Tumble Trak which is best described as a tight trampoline, and a spring floor, which is a floor that has some bounce to it for added safety. For bars we have multiple bars at different heights, and we also have a variety of balance beams where kids can work on their beam gymnastics. Baruch Hashem, our current facility and equipment has been maxed out and we are looking forward to next season when we hope to move to a larger space with additional equipment so that we can service the demand of customers looking for professional gymnastics in a frum and kosher setting. Pinny Weiss Trainer and Manager at Power Up Fitness

How is Power Up Fitness different from a typical gym workout?

When a person wants to work on his fitness, whether his goal is weight-loss, health, strength or muscle building, he generally has two options. He can sign up at a gym, pay their monthly membership fee, and either attend gym or not, with no specific direction or goals. The vast majority of people who sign up, end up paying the fee and not showing up. Alternatively, he can hire a personal trainer who will customize a plan for his specific goals and train him, but each time he wants to work out he needs to pay the full price of a session, or get a gym membership on the side. At our personal training studio, you get trained with a customized program, you can show up when you don’t have a scheduled session, and still get motivation and guidance. What made you go into this line?

I was earning a degree in psychology. I was not interested in it, but I couldn’t think of what I wanted to do with my future. I was slowly gaining weight. Every so often, I’d go to buy a suit in the next size, and I always chose one that was just a little smaller than I needed, so it’ll give me a motivation to lose weight. After doing this for the fifth time, and saying to my wife, “I’ll just get one that’s a little tight so I’ll have the motivation to lose weight,” my wife suddenly said to me. “I think you should just get a suit that fits.” This was a wakeup call and I suddenly felt that I had to prove myself, to actually go and lose that weight. Then there was also the fact that I was feeling lethargic throughout the day: I’d get home after work at four and I’d collapse on the couch. I also had knee pain and every time I’d go to the doctor he’d prod me to lose weight. My weight and poor eating habits were really affecting my mood and functioning. Then began my journey with yo-yo dieting, I tried all diet fads; I’d see short-term results, but the weight would just come back. It was then that I hired a personal trainer; I wasn’t yet ready for food changes. I started exercising religiously three times a week, and then, when I realized that food changes must go along with it, I went onto a strict diet from which I didn’t budge for a full year. And I started seeing results; I slept less, yet I had more energy and the pounds were slowly yet steadily dropping. I began feeling confident and purposeful. I lost about 90 pounds, and kept it off since 2011. I was still studying psychology at that point, when people inquired why I don’t become a personal trainer. In 2012 I became a personal trainer at Better Health Studios in Brooklyn, in 2013, I received certification. I now manage

72 / THE MONSEY VIEW

and train at Power Up Fitness in Monsey. What kind of EDUCATION do you have?

I am an ACE certified personal trainer. I have a certification in the Functional Movement System (FMS), and I’m a Certified Functional Strength Coach (CFSC.) I am certified as a nutrition coach so I can give my clients the full coaching and support. What I do is called functional training, which is training the body for the activities performed in daily life. It involves training for strength and for a healthier life. It’s taking your goal and working with it by setting up a program that’ll get you healthier, fitter and stronger. What do you find makes people more successful at getting in shape than others?

There are the clients who come in and say, “I want to lose 30 pounds in the next month.” Obviously, I’ll work with the client to help him reach his goal, but that’s not the recipe for a consistent, lasting plan. There are three tools you have to losing weight: the exercise, the food plan and also just being active outside the gym, whether it’s by doing housework, doing errands on your own, or walking to a shul that’s farther than around the corner. Slower, more focused healthier lifestyle changes will give you the constant — maybe slower — progress that can be maintained. And the automatic benefits are many: Once you're focused on health and functionality, you’ll be looking better, feeling better, and reaching your personal goals along with bettering your quality of life. That’s what functional training is all about. And really, every single client that shows up — even after they’ve been lax, even after they binged on food that isn’t good for them — and sticks with just a bit of consistent exercise will see results. Whatever effort you put in really shows. How do you encourage clients to exercise?

We send out reminders, we make phone calls, we reach out to our clients, doing everything except for actually going into their homes to pick them up.They know they’re expected to do their steady workouts. In most gyms, they expect you not to show up — if everyone who’s actually signed up would be showing up, they wouldn’t be able to run. At Power Up, we count on you to show up, for business to run.

FOR MY FORTIETH BIRTHDAY I gave myself an interesting present: a visit to the doctor to make sure I was healthy. I am a fit, slim woman, and after my doctor gave me a clean bill of health he made a suggestion. “At your age, it would be wise to begin exercising regularly to make sure you maintain your health.” I discussed various options with him and he recommended that I purchase a treadmill and walk three times a week for about forty minutes. “If you do that, you will feel energized and enjoy the health benefits, too.” My doctor smiled at me. “Go for it!” And with that he was gone. I listened to his advice and got myself a treadmill and a new pair of sneakers. My new walking routine began at the end of that week. Being a stickler for following the rules, I wore shock-absorbing sneakers, warmed up before I began walking in earnest, made sure to use appropriate settings and then cooled off slowly during the last five minutes. The gratification was instant. Walking the treadmill energized me and gave me a tremendous amount of satisfaction. It felt good to be taking care of myself. That’s until one day, as I got off the treadmill, I felt pain in my knee. I didn’t make much of it until the next morning when the pain be-

treadmill so he could exercise each day. Naturally, they agreed and even got him the best pair of running shoes they could find in a size 13. Yaakov Shlome was over six feet tall, otherwise healthy and eager to get his feet off the ground. (Sorry, an eyeball roll is in place here. Couldn’t resist the pun.) As part of his new equipment, he purchased a new iPod and got it loaded with the best music he could. He ran on the treadmill in his parents’ basement every night for forty minutes. He started slowly and built up speed. He even tried a bit of an incline for a few minutes each time. By the time he got off the treadmill, he was sweating. But he wouldn’t give it up. The energy he got from that routine was worth all the hard work. And he was losing weight beautifully! About three months later, the trouble began. About fifteen minutes into his music, to the beat of some of the finest tunes, his knee began throbbing. He tried to ignore it and was determined to just get on with the show. After thirty minutes he was in agony and got off the treadmill. He wracked his brain for some clues. Maybe he had bumped his knee at his friend’s wedding the previous night? He couldn’t remember anything. About an hour after he got off the treadmill, the pain subsided. Logically, he assumed that he would feel better the next day and waited to try again. As soon as he got home from Maariv, he donned his sneakers, put the earbuds into his ear and got ready to run. But after ten minutes this time, his knee gave out. Now, he was seriously worried. The next morning found Yaakov Shlome at his local doctor. After hearing his story and examining his leg, and after some head-shaking and tongue-clucking, the doctor explained that he had entirely worn out his knee cap from the constant shock absorbing of running the treadmill. His feet just couldn’t handle the stress. So at age 23, Yaakov Shlome gave up walking the treadmill forever. He reached his weight-loss goal, losing 110 pounds, and got married. Since his injury, he learned to exercise through brisk walking in the areas surrounding his home. The fact that the terrain he walks is varied, prevents repeated motion, stress and injury to the knees. It is now a decade later. He still cannot use treadmills or do any vigorous exercise involving his knees; even dancing at a simcha is painful after a few minutes. He still uses his trusty earbuds and still walks for hours, but his knee injury prevents him from engaging in the workouts he had previously enjoyed.

This stat will disappoint you if you are hoping that your scale is faulty and you didn’t really gain those pounds over yom tov: A home-use bathroom scale has a margin of error of a ¼ pound. The time your weight is the lowest is the morning (unless you tend to wake up for midnight snacks).

Some families have the minhag to weigh a child’s hair at his upsherin and donate the equivalent value in gold or silver to tzedakah, as a zechus that he should have success in Torah.

If you’re checking in at the airport, just one pound above the baggage weight limit can you set you back a pretty penny. But are the airports’ scales fair? Are they calibrated often enough to ensure accuracy? Not always, studies show. So what should you do if your carefully weighed baggage is now over the limit? Politely request to have your baggage weighed at a nearby desk, and you may save on an undeserved fee.

For international flights from the U.S., baggage weight limit is usually 50 pounds. Luggage scale: a handheld scale which your suitcase is hooked or strapped onto, and when lifted shows the baggage weight. Gold and other precious metals are generally weighed on very precise jewelry scales in troy ounces. 1 troy ounce = 1.0971 ounces 20 pennyweights = 1 troy ounce

The first known measuring device was the Roman balance, used about 2,000 years ago: an equal beam scale, shaped like the letter T, with a metal pan attached to each arm. A known measurement was placed in one pan, and the other pan was filled until it was as balanced as possible.

Since the moon’s gravitational pull is a sixth of the strength of Earth’s, you will weigh one-sixth of your weight on the moon. 88 / THE MONSEY VIEW

The largest gold nugget ever found was the Welcome Stranger nugget, mined in Australia in 1869. It weighed over 173 pounds and measured 24 by 12 inches. Since at the time of the discovery there were no scales capable of weighing a nugget this large, it was broken into three pieces to be weighed. A replica of Welcome Stranger based on drawings: The federal weight limit for the longest trucks are 80,000 pounds. (A weight-to-length ratio was developed, the “Federal Bridge Formula” for truck weight regulations, as shorter trucks’ weight concentration causes more damage on roads, as illustrated.)

Trucks are weighed at special weigh stations often located at the borders between states or on the outskirts of major cities.

Bridges and tunnels across the U.S. have their customized weight limits to prevent bridge collapse.

The beam balance is one of the traditional symbols of justice.

The first known unit of weight was the wheat seed, against which other crops were weighed on balances. THE MONSEY VIEW / 89

HEN A DOG BITES A CHILD, it doesn’t just tear skin and flesh; it tears apart the hearts of the parents, the siblings, the witnesses. It tears the faith of children that the outdoors is safe, that animals can be trusted. It tears the peace in the attacked child’s own life — if the child has even survived. News of last week’s horrific dog attack on a neighborhood child went viral, spreading around the world at super speed. For me, though, the story was at my door in seconds. “Mommy, a dog just jumped on Eli,” My daughter breathlessly related. Just down the block, my neighbor’s child was being ravaged by a savage beast. My children had been standing right there, watching the tragic scene unfold. In fact, my son had been standing in that same spot only moments prior. It had seemed like a regular day as the little boy played with his brothers and friends, until the moment when the neighbor across the street opened a door and released an agitated, angry animal. Like a speeding bullet, he ran straight for the threeyear-old boy, knocked him down with the force of a truck, and repeatedly bit the child. Baruch Hashem, Eli survived a type of attack that many have not walked away from. May Hashem grant him a complete refuah b’karov. DOGS. WHETHER YOU love them or hate them, you have to admit that there is incredible nifloas haborei in their creation. Personally, I’m fascinated by dogs, and animals in general. They are such complex creations, guided both by instinct and manly manipulation. They can be full of personality and be used for vital purposes to aid humankind, such as by serving as guide dogs, in bomb/survivor searches, or by being used in therapy for special needs or trauma victims. Yes, the dog — though many may not realize it — has been a valuable contribution to the world in its own way. But a dog in the wrong hands can wreak havok. Without proper care and training — and most importantly — respect for the animal’s natural instincts and needs, a dog can be turned into a vicious weapon. In last week’s attack, nothing could have been done by anyone on the street to prevent the dog from mauling the child, but there are times when attacks can be prevented. Here’s what you need to know about safety around potentially aggressive dogs:

92 / THE MONSEY VIEW / April 26, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS OF AN AGGRESSIVE DOG While most people associate tail-wagging as a sign of a happy, friendly dog, experts say otherwise. In fact, the security footage from last week’s attack shows the dog wagging his tail before, during and after viciously accosting the toddler. In general, dog body language has its own subtleties, and while a tail wagging in a circular movement combined with a relaxed body signals a content animal, a dog with a tense posture, tail wagging and hard stare should never be approached. These are signs of over-arousal and frustration which can turn into aggression. Signs of aggression can include: • Ears laid fully back or held erect with a stiff tail-wagging motion • Teeth-baring • Intense staring • Stiff body posture • Vocalizations through barking, growling, snarling and/or snapping • Raised hackles (the hairs on the ridge of the back)

PREVENTING AN ATTACK Unlike last week in which the dog attack was completely unavoidable, certain attacks are preventable. If you are near a dog displaying aggression signals: • DO NOT RUN. This can activate the dog’s natural instinct to chase and attack. • DO NOT MAKE EYE CONTACT with a staring dog. Dogs consider this a threat. Ignore the dog completely. • STAY CALM. Nervous, jittery or sudden movements feel threatening to a dog. • TURN YOUR BODY SLOWLY TO THE SIDE. (Not the back!) Cross your arms. • DO NOT SMILE at the dog! Smiles resemble teeth-baring to a dog, making it believe you are looking for a fight. • BACK AWAY SLOWLY only after the dog begins to lose interest in you. • If the dog does not lose interest, a deep-throated command like, “NO! GO AWAY!” may work. This will only work if the dog believes you are stronger than him and not afraid. • DO NOT TURN YOUR BACK to a circling dog. He may be looking for the best angle to attack. • COMMAND THE DOG TO “SIT!” Some dogs are well-trained and will surprisingly obey this command instead of attacking.

IF AN ATTACK HAPPENS Sometimes, a dog attack is inevitable. Sometimes, one can fight back, other times, perhaps a tree is nearby and can be climbed to safety, but sometimes — such as when the animal outweighs the victim — the only thing to be done is to curl up into a tight ball with the fingers laced around the back of the neck, and the elbows and outer arms protecting the front of the neck.

TO FIGHT BACK • If there is an object you can PUT BETWEEN YOU AND THE DOG’S MOUTH, do so! This can be a stick or pocketbook, or anything that can absorb the bite instead of a person. If there is a stick available, you can also try to shove it into the dog’s throat, but aiming may be understandably difficult. • If the dog is charging, BAIT IT with your non-dominant arm and when the dog lunges, pivot away and try to kick the ribs or groin with force. If the dog returns, try the same technique. After the third try, most dogs can be scared away with an aggressive shout. • If bitten, DO NOT PULL AWAY the body part. PUSH THE BODY PART INTO THE DOG’S MOUTH, breaking the hold. Pulling away shreds the skin, making the injuries worse than they’d otherwise be. • COVER the dog’s head with a jacket if possible, blinding him and blocking his mouth. • The EYES AND NOSE of a dog are most sensitive. These are your main areas to focus on if you are in a position to fight back. This does not usually work in the case of pit bulls and rottweilers. • If possible, tightly grip the dog’s neck and SQUEEZE until it passes out. • WHEN PIT BULLS AND ROTTWEILERS ATTACK: These breeds specifically have high pain thresholds, and even losing ears, limbs or suffering serious injury may not cause them to let go of their victim. These dogs would often rather die than release their hold. For these breeds of dogs, DISTRACTION is often the best way to loosen their grip. When in a rage, their mentality is “kill or be killed.” Blasting a fire extinguisher on the dog can usually stop an attack. A sudden loud noise can sometimes stop an attack, and sometimes even a pan of cold water thrown on the dog can stop an attack. Pain does not stop a pit bull or rottweiler attack in most cases. • When all else fails, LET THE DOG BITE you in a less-important body part, like the forearm, so that it will not bite a more vital area, such as the upper arms or neck. Hopefully, help will arrive soon or the dog will lose interest.

MOST AGGRESSIVE BREEDS With over recognized 400 breeds on this planet, dogs come in varying sizes, shapes and colors which are uniquely suited to the task for which they were created. Sled dogs, for instance, are equipped with not one, but two layers of fur for the cold winter locales in which they work. During the summer when insulation is not needed, the soft, fluffy layer of undercoat is shed, leaving the dog able to handle the warmer weather. Breeds used throughout the ages for forest and water hunting have a soft bite to prevent damage to the game they bring their masters, and desert hunting dogs are equipped with barrel chests, extra large lungs and long legs to help them run quickly in the open desert. Temperaments, too, vary drastically from one type of dog to another. While the super-sized Great Dane, for instance — which can stand at over six feet tall on its rear legs — looks awfully intimidating, its personality is one of the most relaxed among all dogs. Tiny terriers, though, can often be high-anxiety animals with unbridled energy, making them less trustworthy around children than other breeds. And then there are fighting dogs, raised solely throughout history for participation in horrific blood sports glorified among the goyim. These dogs were typically abused, starved and then released to fight to the death with other dogs, bears, or bulls. Bets were — and though illegal, still are — placed on which dog would survive, turning the dance of death into “entertainment” for a blood-thirsty crowd. The fiercest dogs were chosen to parent the next generation, leading to aggressiveness becoming an inborn trait of the bulldog family of breeds. Within the bully breeds, pit bulls are specifically known as the most naturally aggressive, though it should be noted that with the right care, even pit bulls can be gentle animals in most situations. Statistically, American dog society is made up of roughly only 5–6% of pit bull-like breeds, but around a third of all attacks and Dog Bite Related Fatalities (DBRF) are made by this type of dog. Pit bulls are able to inflict especially serious injuries due to their super-strong jaws, the tendency to bite deeper than other dogs while grinding their teeth, and their catch-and-shake instincts. Following behind the bully breeds in DBRF are breeds like rottweilers and Doberman.

Here’s how to recognize the most inherently dangerous breeds of dogs.

THE BULLY BREEDS The bulldog category of dogs is host to many different official breeds and bulldog mixes which can all be easily recognized by the characteristic square-ish body, large head, and short muzzle (mouth). The ears of a bulldog can be either naturally floppy or stand straight up — the latter achieved through a surgical procedure. Compare the differences between bully breeds and non-bully breeds.

BULLY BREEDS Note the square-shaped muscular build. These types of dogs are still frequently (and illegally) raised for fighting.

PIT BULL

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER

COLLIE

OTHER BREEDS MOST COMMONLY RESPONSIBLE FOR DBRF ROTTWEILER Also has a squareshaped, muscular build, has black and brown (or tan) markings, and is known for being the #2 runner-up in DBRFs.

NON-BULLY BREEDS

AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER

Here is a sampling of some of the less aggressively-inclined breeds. Note the distinct differences in build when compared to bully breeds.

DACHSHUND

SALUKI

DOBERMAN Created specifically for security, Dobermans have high intelligence and a unique psychology. The European versions are known for being high-strung and having extremely aggressive tendencies, while their American counterparts are generally tamer.

CaIl Us Today !! 1. It takes more then one cycle to dry your clothes

3. Your dryer feels hot to the touch while in use

2. There are any signs of a birds nest on the exterior your dryer vent

4. Lint is building up on or around the dryer

Real Estate Monsey’s Exercise Opportunities IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS, we have discussed space. We discussed space for guests, for family members, older generations and the younger generations, too; space for storage and also, how to choose a new house based on the required space. But buying a home in Monsey is more than just about spacious homes. For some, it is a lifestyle change from the city, urban life to suburbia. Even the most congested areas of our community are less developed than the city. There are quieter streets, place for children to play and an overall quality of life that is unique. Monsey has much that the city has to offer in regards to shopping, conveniences, mosdos and shuls without the high prices, small living quarters and necessity to go to the country in the summer. In recent years, as housing in the city has gotten more and more pricey, there has been a migration to communities outside of the city, and we are fortunate that Monsey is one such community. We have an influx of new neighbors moving to Monsey, Spring Valley, Wesley Hills, Chestnut Ridge, Pomona, New Hempstead, New City, Airmont, Montebello, Garnerville, Thiells, Haverstraw and Suffern. (Did I forget a community?) These new neighbors bring about a diverse population, with great talent and culture which enhances our communities and creates new opportunity for our growing families to purchase affordable housing. As more families move in, and since healthy living is at the forefront today, I am pleased to share that Monsey has many options for the ones who crave physical exercise. The obvious are the gyms. We have a few local gyms, even those that have swimming pools. We are surrounded by beautiful parks that have walking, running and biking trails. We have many hiking trails, ones that have stunning views of the Hudson River, NYC and just gorgeous nature. Our side roads are quiet, leaving the possibility for outdoor walking and jogging in the neighborhood. And of course, most homes have

Monsey has many options for the ones who crave physical exercise.

basements and/or family rooms, creating the space for exercise equipment that can be purchased so that one can exercise at home. Our properties are large. Some buyers want a pool. Homes with pools are available. Recently, a local realtor had a client who only wanted to purchase a home with a pool. She had been on the losing end of a bidding war. Her innovative realtor went to Town Hall, looked up every home with a pool in the area and wrote a letter to the homeowners asking if they or their neighbors wanted to sell since she had a qualified buyer who wanted a home with a pool. It worked and this buyer is closing next week, in time for the summer! Some homes have basketball courts and/or tennis courts on them. A neighbor of mine has a fenced-in tennis court in the back of her property. Her family does not play tennis. She keeps her children’s bikes there and the children can ride on the even surface in a fencedin area. She can be in her home, keeping an eye on the backyard while her children safely play outside. Local realtors, when selling homes, work with new clients to make sure that they find a home that suits their location needs and their space needs, and is a home that they can afford according to their mortgage preapproval. The enjoyment of the outdoors is just a free bonus thrown in with the overall package.
