NO ALTERNATIVE TIME TOSLEEPSLEEP! CYCLES Around the globe, among different nations and cultures, it seems there’s one thing that all of humanity agrees upon — that we go to sleep at night and stay awake by day… But not everyone. The vast majority of the world is MONOPHASIC, sleeping once in a 24-hour cycle. But there are individuals and groups who find who find that a POLYPHASIC sleeping pattern, those involving multiple sleeping phases in a 24-hour period, work best for their lifestyle and schedule.

FREE-RUNNING SLEEP If you simply recharge your phone when it’s low on juice, why can’t you do the same? think people who believe in free-running sleep. Basically, they keep going until they feel tired, and then take a nap or turn in for the night when they feel they need to sleep. This is not recommended, as our body is naturally inclined to a 24-hour cycle and not a workand-recharge system.

BIPHASIC CYCLE

ingly, many who’ve tried it reverted to monophasic sleeping patterns after reporting boredom (what really should they be doing 22 hours a day?), being out of sync with their family’s schedule, and of course, crushing tiredness that caused them to do things like crashing cars and totally not living in the moment. Each of these cycles have a period of adaptation, where the person undergoes a “zombie mode” where normal cognitive function is severely impaired, until his body adapts to minimal sleeping times. It is unsure if and how it affects the health of people adapted to that lifestyle, but it can’t be too beneficial! FYI: When did Thomas Edison invent the 1,093 patents attributed to his genius? While his contemporaries slept! Edison was a polyphasic sleeper, relying on naps throughout the day to increase his waking time.

EVERYMAN CYCLE This cycle consists of four sleeps in a 24hour cycle: a 3.5-hour spell of core sleep and three 20-minute naps across the day.

This cycle, common in Israel, other Mediterranean countries and in Latin America, consists of a split sleeping pattern: 5-6 hours of sleep at night and a 1.5-hour nap after midday. It is not proper to ring the doorbell or call on the phone after lunch in those regions.

DYMAXION CYCLE

POLYPHASIC CYCLES

UBERMAN CYCLE

In this class are Everyman, Dymaxion and Uberman cycles, the Everyman being the least sleep-depriving of the three, but nothing that you’d want to try! Polyphasic cycles are tried by people who feel sleep is a waste of time, and there’s so much to be done instead of recharging. Not surpris-

This cycle consists of 6 to 8 equidistant naps across the day, each lasting 20 minutes.

This cycle consists of 4 half-hour-naps throughout the day, one every 6 hours.

FYI: Leonardo da Vinci followed the Uberman sleep cycle.
